Stakeholders worried about the environmetal issues of ICT

The Australian Computer Society delivered Australia’s first ICT carbon emissions audit, revealing that ICT used by Australian businesses 

generated 7 94 million tons(Mt) of carbon dioxide in 2005 which is thegenerated 7.94 million tons(Mt) of carbon dioxide in 2005, which is the close equivalent to the civil aviation and the metal production Industries

ICT usage by Australian businesses represents 2.84% of the emissions g y p fattributed to the stationary energy component (energy consumed excluding transportation), and 1.52% of the total national emissions, which totals  522.2 Mt CO2.  

’ b i i bl i i h i d i hICT’s carbon emissions are comparable in size to other industries such as :•civil aviation  ‐ which is estimated to generate 0.97% of total carbon emissions

• the cement industry ‐ at around 1%.

The amo nt of electronicThe amount of electronicproducts discarded globally has skyrocketed recently, with 20‐50 million tonswith 20‐50 million tons generated every year.

The e waste problem – some figuresThe e‐waste problem – some figures

• Continued, rapid technological progress in the IT industry has contributed to short lifespans that are well below the functional limits of computers. A short lifespan exacerbatesfunctional limits of computers. A short lifespan exacerbates environmental  impact, requiring production of more new machines and increasing the numbers heading for landfills or recycling centersrecycling centers 

• E‐waste is now the fastest growing component of the i i l lid bil h dmunicipal solid waste stream:  mobile phones and computers 

are causing the biggest problem because they are replaced most often

• In Europe e‐waste is increasing at 3%‐5% a year, almost three times faster than the total waste streamtimes faster than the total waste stream

• Developing countries are also expected to triple their e‐waste production over the next five years

• The average lifespan of computers in developed countries has dropped from six years in 1997 to just two years in 2005

• 183 million computers were sold worldwide in 2004 ‐11.6 % more than in 2003more than in 2003

• By 2010, there will be 716 million new computers in use. There will be 178 million new computer users in China, 80 million new users in India

• When a computer no longer satisfies the needs of its user, she or he can sell or donate it to another user who has lower demands on performance
