You may remember reading in December's Newsletter about the bombshell dropped by Oldham Council. They are proposing to cease funding the arena which is a major element of our showground. In the current economic climate where local authorities are having to cut their budgets severely it's perhaps not too surprising that our precious arena should have come under the microscope as a possible source of savings. We don't yet know whether the Council will definitely cut the funding, but even if they don't, they will be looking for greater contributions to the running costs from those who enjoy the benefits of the facility. So if all of us can do our bit then we might be able to secure the long term future of the arena. You will find details on page 29 of the 2011 Show Schedule of how you can become a member of the "Friends of Friezland" which will make a small donation to the maintenance cost of the arena. We would also encourage you to support the fund-raising shows run each year by the Friezland User Group, the proceeds of which are used for maintenance of the arena. These events include the Family Horse Show (Saturday 20 August), the TREC and the Superhorse competition (dates to be confirmed shortly) and the Annual Horsemen's Carol Service (Saturday 10 December). If we all do what we can in a small way perhaps we can guarantee the future of our fantastic showground. Oldham Council are also seeking to promote the Friezland area for general recreation and would welcome any photographs you may have of horse activities, dog walking etc either on the arena, on the field or on the bridleway passing through the area. Any or all of these would be welcome. If you can help, please e-mail pics to [email protected].

"&./)'$,.%& by Michael Wigley, Website Manager

The ODRC website has been given a major overhaul and the relaunched version is now available at www.ODRC.co.uk. Just think of it as the club notice board, so keep an eye on it from time to time and if you see something that doesn’t look quite right, let me know. If you have some news to share with the rest of the club, please let either Minda (Newsletter Editor) or me know, and we’ll bring it to everyone’s attention – e-mail us at [email protected] or [email protected]

Many thanks to previous website editor Andy Morrison for all the work he put in to the website and for helping with the handover.

We’ve got lots of space available to fill yet, so send us your photographs of ODRC members on their mounts. I’m particularly keen to have some action shots of the 2010 Trophy winners, so you can e-mail me anything suitable.

The full schedule of shows for the 2011 season is up and available for you to check your diaries, and we've also included some dates of other events that you might be interested in, such as the Friezland User Group fundraisers and some NLG shows where we intend to send an ODRC team.

If you click on the Dressage page from Shows & Events, you will find a button to press for an entry form, so you don’t need to mutilate your printed Schedule by clipping the entry forms from that if you prefer not to. Entry forms are also available for the Combined Training and One-Day events.

Times for the Dressage, Combined Training and One-day Event will be put on the website as soon as they are available, so you’ll be able to find out what time you’re on by looking on the website and save you having to remember to ring the organiser.

Show results (when we have them) will be uploaded, so again some interesting photographs taken on the show ground might well find themselves alongside if you send me anything useful.

Let’s just hope we don’t have to cancel any of our shows this season, but if we do the Show Organisers will let me know as soon as they’ve made any decision and it will go up on the website. In which case it might be a good idea to look on the website first thing on any show day, before you start grooming your horse (or going back to bed).

If you’ve lost any previous issues of the newsletters and want to look something up, there’s an archive of the 2010 issues on the website.

There are various notice boards scattered around the website, listing Teams news, Training courses, as well as small ads and “swap-shop” ideas – members only!

Remember, it’s your website, so let me know of anything you'd like to see there.

We now have an official "Helper Coordinator" in the form of Alana Bennett! Alana will be getting in touch with people to encourage them to stick to their promise to help at the shows. You will have noticed in last year's Newsletters that we reminded members in the month before each show of the names of those who had promised to help at the couple of shows in the following month. This we will continue to do, but Alana will be checking that those volunteers are still available on the dates they promised. So expect your call from Alana! Once again we are in the unfortunate position of having no Showjumping Show Organiser so we are n the look out for volunteers either to take on this task or to help join a band of folk willing to do all the setting up in the morning, taking down again in the afternoon, and to do all the running about in between to make the show happen. If we don't get enough volunteers then the shows will have to be cancelled – so please either pick up the phone and ring me (Minda on 01457 870421) or e-mail [email protected] and offer to help make sure these shows go ahead.

The schedule for Combined Training this year has been expanded in the hope that it will appeal to a greater number of our members. Sue Hamer, who is organising the shows this year, is keen to put the emphasis well and truly on "training" and wants to encourage all levels of rider to have a go. There are to be 3 classes – an Intro dressage test with jumps at 2'1", a Prelim dressage test with jumps at 2'6" and a Novice dressage test with jumps at 2'9". Another feature which might tempt you to have a go is that show gear is optional provided you are dressed smartly and appropriately for the classes. You will also get feedback on both your dressage test and your jumping to help you improve your performance for your next competition. You can e-mail Sue Hamer with any queries at [email protected] or you can phone her on 07889 156171.

You may have noticed in the December Newsletter that we have no Social Secretary this year. If you would like to volunteer for the post please contact Sue Hollingworth on 07970 857739 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Alternatively, if you have any ideas of social events you think might be of interest to members, and that you would be willing to organise yourself, please e-mail [email protected] with the details and I will publicise your event in the Newsletter nearest to the date of your event and arrange for the details to be posted on the website.

The following article appeared in Issue 10 of the Saddleworth Independent. Peter Carter, ODRC's Bridleways representative, assisted the North East Cheshire Drag hunt in devising a route for a fun ride with hounds around Saddleworth. Peter (pictured with his trusty steed, Bryn in the left hand photo) also organises ODRC's annual Sponsored Ride, which this year is raising funds for the North West Air Ambulance service.

Legendary Saddleworth horseman, Peter Carter, turned trailblazer when the North East Cheshire Drag Hunt came to visit.

Peter, from Diggle, riding 22-year-old Bryn, a Welsh section D horse, led more than 30 huntsmen and hounds, including whippers-in, on a 10-mile route across winding lanes taking in local landmarks.

The tour by the hunt, visiting the area for the first time in 24 years, took them over Stannage (sic), Castleshaw, Heights, Delph and Diggle.

Brian Powell, former master and founder of Saddleworth Drag Hunt, which finished after the foot and mouth outbreak, shared a stirrup cup with the hunt at The Church Inn, Uppermill.

Peter said: "It was good to hear the sound of hunting horns in the hills again."

Many of us tend to stick to the same type of shows each year but perhaps one or more of these articles might whet your appetite to have a go at something different. My thanks to Halia Williams for her help with this series of articles.

In this month’s Showing article I will be looking at correct turnout for your horse. First we’ll look at tack. Each Class will have its own rules and etiquette but the basic tack is the same for all Classes. You’ll notice that I will say something is or is not correct for a Class and you might think, ‘I don’t have that’ or ‘Well, he goes alright in a snaffle’ and other things, I’m sure. Knowing what is acceptable in the eyes of the Judge is a part of Ringcraft and Ringcraft is what helps win Classes.

So, for ridden Classes you will need:

• A straight cut leather saddle in Black or Havana. No light colours or synthetic saddles. Matching stirrup leathers and well polished irons with dark treads. No numnah is required but if you do have to use one make sure it is discreet. A saddlecloth is a big NO.

• A girth. This should be a colour that matches your horse's colour and, therefore, doesn’t appear to cut your horse in half.

• Leather bridle Black or Havana, again, no light colours. The correct bridle for ridden Classes is a Double Bridle. Snaffles are acceptable, if not preferred in Novice Classes. Riding Clubs don’t often have separate Classes for Novice horses so it is quite common to have horses in snaffles and double bridles in the same Class. The Judge will usually ask your horse’s age and an older horse would be expected to be seen in a double bridle. However….. not all horses will accept or be ready for a double bridle, or the rider may not be used to using one. The ideal way to introduce your horse to a double is to start with a Pelham. Using a Pelham first will get the rider used to holding two reins and will get the horse used to increased poll pressure and a curb chain. The Pelham is fitted to a normal snaffle bridle.

Some horses, because of their mouth conformation, will never be comfortable with two bits. The ideal bit (and one of my favourites) for these horses is the Rugby Pelham. This bit has only one mouthpiece but has a bradoon ring attached to what is basically a Weymouth bit. This bit attached to a double bridle gives the impression that the horse does have two bits in its mouth. If you don’t want to buy a double bridle you can add a bradoon headpiece to a snaffle bridle.

The reins should be plain but if you are used to riding in rubber reins, you can get half rubber reins which have rubber on the inside only and so look very tidy for Showing and Dressage. Also, plaited reins look quite smart. The bottom rein or curb rein should always be plain.

Browbands will either be plain leather or coloured silk/velvet, depending on the Class.

When I was a young girl, a long, long time ago (Ed: nonsense – you're only a slip of a girl, Halia!), Working Hunter Classes required the same tack as all other Showing classes. This has changed and basically, anything goes. The official rules for Ridden and Working Hunter Classes state ‘4-year-olds are encouraged to be shown in snaffles. Swales, Sam Marsh bits and Gags with double bridles are actively discouraged. Martingales are only to be used on Working Hunters’. Brushing boots are permitted for the jumping phase but must be removed for the rest of the class. In Hand Classes These are pretty easy as you only need a bridle or halter. White halters can be used in Mountain and Moorland classes and are quite correct for Welsh Breeds. In youngstock Classes, fillies can be shown in a leather slip but for all youngstock, a leather in-hand bridle with a straight mouth bit that has small rings, is ideal.

/%$-)'2/%$-)'2/%$-)'2/%$-)'2",2&'."#*$'1$333345",2&'."#*$'1$333345",2&'."#*$'1$333345",2&'."#*$'1$333345."$'&6."$'&6."$'&6."$'&6 For horses that are 4 years old or over, either an in-hand bridle or a double bridle is fine. I will mention here that for these horses, your dress will depend on which bridle you’re using. This will be covered next month. If you’re using an in-hand bridle you will need a leather lead rein and the double bridle will have its two reins. Additional Turnout Some Classes, e.g. Mountain and Moorland, require your horse/pony to shown in its natural state. If this is not required, your horse should be plaited and its tail plaited or pulled. Plaits should be sewn in and it is not correct to use rubber bands, so get practicing! To finish, I would just like to mention that it is important that all tack is fitted correctly both for appearance and for comfort for you and your horse. Loose fitting bridles are very unsightly and ineffective. Common faults seen at Riding Club level are baggy nosebands that are fitted too low and bits fitted too low, especially Pelhams and double bridle bits. These bits fitted incorrectly can cause pain to the horse so if you’re not sure get some advice. Next month I’ll be looking at rider/handler dress and will go through the Classes listing the correct turnout for each one.

*)$$'"'1%$78&.# by Abi Atherton, Club Secretary & Organiser of Presentation Night

Thanks to all our members who braved the icy weather and the slightly dodgy DJ to join us for our 2010 presentation evening. We had a brilliant turn out and it was fantastic to see some new faces amongst the old ones and to celebrate our successes at local, regional and this year even at national level (well done, Bridget!).

The best trophy of the night had to be the one for the NLG pub quiz which will take pride of place in the ODRC trophy cabinet, although obviously the real prize is the honour of organising next year’s questions - hope you have a Guinness book of records to poach ideas from, Andy…..!?!

Vicky Tibbot did her usual excellent job of hosting the evening. It was lovely too to see Mark Bradley who joined Sue Hamer to present the awards for the mini one-day event. You will remember Sue organised this event in memory of Mark’s late wife, Jill Bradley.

Due to the glittering sales patter of the raffle girls and the generosity of those who donated prizes and purchased tickets, you raised £100 at the presentation evening for Jill Bradley’s nominated cancer charities. I’m personally still reeling from the excitement of winning my glamorous horsey bed socks!!

I hope you had a fantastic evening and didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to muck out your horse the morning after! For those who couldn’t make it, you missed a good night – don’t make the same mistake again. Remember to book your tickets early this year!

Abi

SADDLE FOR SALE OR EXCHANGE

The Saddle is an Ideal Jessica Dressage Saddle, Medium-Wide, 17.5" and recently reflocked, black leather with suede seat and knee rolls. A really smart saddle that a lot of dressage riders swear by but I have been advised to go for a smaller seat.

I paid £500 for it, but would consider any reasonable offer. I would be happy to swap or part exchange for another dressage saddle, but prefer a 17 inch seat, ideally a more close contact saddle, make is irrelevant. It will have to be Medium-Wide and suitable for high withers, other than that I am open to suggestions.
