    Dear Friends,

Fall is, by far, my favorite season of the year. Theres justsomething new and different in the air! This time of year, I

have the inexplicable urge to buy new day planners and freshly-sharpened pencils, as if I am going back to school myself. Thisback-to-school season is a time for all of us, kids and adultsalike, to start fresh and explore new opportunities. Every Sep-tember, it is as if we have the chance to experience New Years

all over again! In many ways, it is back-to-school time for East Stroudsburg

United Methodist Church as well. New things are happening.Theres something electrifying in the air at East StroudsburgUnited Methodist Church. Godis in the air at our church!

This fall, we are experiencing many new beginnings. We are

welcoming Pastor Ed and Faith Kimes back after a year of min-istry in Falmouth, England. We are looking forward to thecompletion of our basement renovation and are eagerly antici-pating the ways that we can use that space to achieve Gods

vision for our church. We are reaching out to our communityby opening a new Christian preschool. We are revamping ourevery member in ministry commitment program and our finan-cial pledge program so that we can all grow deeper in our rela-tionships with God.

We are planning new opportunities for fellowship, community outreach, and discipleship. God is certainly in the air at East Stroudsburg United

Methodist Church! This fall is just full of possibilities! Join us as we cele-brate all of these new beginnings at ourEnd-of-Summer Celebration onSunday, September 12. This is sure to be a wonderful time when we canall come together and celebrate the ways that God is moving in our church.Lets begin a new year together!

Page 3Vision 2011 Grow, Connect, Serveby Jill Malefyt

As the Vision Team 2011 interviewed the staff, looked at the results of the congregational visioning question-naire, and prayed and reflected on Gods will for our church, the team discerned that the word relationships keptcoming up again and again. In our sessions, we asked the question, How can we as a church build relationshipswith God and with each other? The team realized that when people are sold-out disciples of Jesus, their prioritiesare arranged in such a way that they put him first in their lives, resulting in joyful giving, serving and loving.

The Vision Team envisioned three ways that we as a church can make room for the Holy Spirit to create de-voted followers of Jesus in our congregation: by growing as disciples through Christs teachings, by serving Christby serving others, and by connecting with one another in Christian community. Below is the proposed Vision2011, which you will be asked to vote on at the Church Conference on November 10, 2010 at 7 p.m.

Our vision is to challenge and encourageeveryone in our congregation to know andfollow Christ by:

    growingas disciples through Christsteachings

    serving Christ by serving others

connecting with one another inChristian community

    The Suggested Initiatives

Broaden our spiritual educational opportu-nities and formats, encouraging every-one to connect with Gods Word.

Workwith everyone to discover their spiri-tual gifts, ensuring that all will serve in

some way in our church or community.

Create fellowship programs that encour-age diverse participation of groups andindividuals, both within and outsidethe church.

    Servants

    Connecting through Christ

Commitment Sunday, November 14This year we have a new look and time-frame for our commitment program. We are

working towards changing the commitment year from January through December to Sep-tember through August. In order to make this transition, your commitment will take place from January 1,2011 through August 31, 2011.

We have changed the layout of the Commitment Card and the way our ministry opportunities are listedEvery ministry will now be categorized under these four areas, which enhance our proposed vision for 2011:

Grow - We are all called as servants to help each other grow spiritually. 2 Peter 3:18, But grow in thegrace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Connect- We are called as servants to connect people to Gods local church. Ephesians 2:19 says, You are

no longer foreigners, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household.

Serve - We are called as servants to reach out and share the Good News with others. Galatians 5:13 says,You were called to freedom, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but throughlove become servants to one another.

Praise - We all exist to celebrate Gods presence in worship and celebration. Psalm 68:4 says, Our God, youare the one who

Support - As we work towards changing our commitment year, the stewardship end of our this program willremain on the calendar year. The stewardship team will use this opportunity to help us grow in our knowl-edge of how God calls us to give.

Page 4Why Should I Give? One of the responsibilities of our Stewardship Team is to encourage you in

your financial giving. This year, the Stewardship Team has been wrestlingwith different ways to make that goal a reality. We have been asking our-selves: How should we best build a ministry plan and budget for 2011? Shouldwe use Commitment Cards? Estimate-of-Giving Cards? Nothing at all? Howcan we encourage people to give not only of their time and talents, but also

of their resources?Because these questions involve the topic of money, theyare considered by many to be somewhat controversial.

After reviewing commitment totals from the last several years, our teamhas noted that the dollar amount of our churchs financial commitment hasdecreased. Even more alarmingly, we have learned that the number of peoplemaking commitments has decreased as well! As a team, we have discerned as

to the major causes for these decreases. First, the financial commitment process has, in many ways, becomea sidebar to the time and talent commitment card. In most recent years we have received many more timeand talent commitments than financial commitments. Perhaps individuals consider the financial part of thecommitment card to be optional. Second, because of the financial uncertainty in the world, many people arebeing more careful with their money. Perhaps individuals are spending less and trying to hang on to more.

With the above thoughts in mind the Stewardship Team believes that a financial commitment or estimateprocess separate from our time and talent commitment program is the direction we should move forwardwith. The reality is that we could do as many mainline American churches are doing and base our plans for2011 based on historical giving. These churches simply go off previous years giving data and than chart amid-year adjustment course depending on where giving is at that time. As commitments have steadily gonedown over the last few years that is exactly what weve done at ESUMC! Because of this in one way or an-other our leaders and staff have had to hold back even though weve had a budget that said move ahead.

The Stewardship Team seeks your help in rejuvenating this financial process. Just imagine what God can

accomplish through us as the Body of Christin East Stroudsburg! But before we even seethe Estimate-of-Giving Cards, all of us(including the Stewardship Team) need toask ourselves a few questions:

First, what is my church worth to me? Howimportant is it to my life?

Second, what ministry opportunities takeplace in my church? How much am I will-ing to give to maintain and grow thoseprograms?

Third, how can my financial resources beused beyond the walls of our church, reaching our community and world?

Certainly, its more than just paying thebills! As we give back what God has givenus, it allows us to work together as a bodyto do wonderful things in Christs name

Join us in this Spiritual ExerciseWere asking everyone to consider all that

God has given you and what our church in East Strouds-

burg means to you. Please pray, reflect and dream aboutour church and all that God can do through us in the fu-ture.

You will be receiving a packet in the mail during the firstweek of October. In the packet you will find four items:1. Answers to questions about why the giving

information you provide the church is important2. A summary of the proposed 2011 ministry plan3. Your Estimate-of-Giving Card4. Your third quarter giving statement

As a church, our mission is to love Jesus Christ and sharehis love. One of the ways that you can live into that mis-sion is by giving wisely and allowing our StewardshipTeam see where God is leading our congregation. As yougive of your financial resources, you can support yourchurch, transform the lives of others, and make a differ-ence in your life as a disciples of Jesus Christ!

Things happen in life that causesus great pain and suffering, and yetmany attempt to hide the pain soothers wont see how much they arehurting. Some go to extremes toput on a happy face to prevent oth-ers from seeing the extent of thepain and sorrow.

Stephen Ministry is a ministry forboth women and men; however, mostmen seem to find it more difficult to ask

for help. So, what gets in the way thatkeeps you from asking for help? Is itpride? Is it that others will think you areweak? Is it guilt or shame? Could it beyou are just afraid of taking that first stepto ask for help? That first step may be

just as easy as grasping the hand that isreaching out to you.

Our ministry of care givers wants towalk beside you during your time of need. Our Stephen Ministers are committed to

Christian care giving, confidentiality, andare sensitive to those who are in need ofcaring support. Please prayerfully consideryour situation, and take that first step tohelp by contacting Peggy Strack at thechurch office, 421-3280.

Laity SundayOctober 17,2010The third Sunday of October is when United Methodists celebrate the ministryof all lay Christians as their lives are empowered for ministry by the Holy Spirit.

This call comes out of the past, through the ages, and echoes into the future;it is a call to "all the people" to open the doors and to join with others in minis-tries of love and compassion. That is a response worth celebrating!

Disciples Transforming the World --Through Presence

"We help transform the world when we are present with others,(when) we reach out to the community, our co-workers, fellow stu-dents, our families in Christian love... ."

cia will share how God called him to reach out to the community and share the love of Christ and encour-age all of us to go forth as disciples of Christ and to act, to do, to serve.
