October takes us through the final days of Ordinary Time as the Church’s calendar brings us to

the threshold of the Kingdom season. Musically, things are far from ordinary. Sounds of Wells,

our short festival, makes its debut in the early days of October, which includes an orchestral

Eucharist, a wonderful concert by the Cathedral Choir and the English Chamber Orchestra and

a commission, Bells by David Bruce.

Do come when you can.

The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor

Communicant members of other churches in good standing are welcome to receive the Sacrament in this

church if they so desire.

October 1st-2nd: The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor

October 3rd-9th: The Reverend Canon Dr Rob James, Chancellor

October 10th-16th: The Very Reverend Dr John Davies DL, Dean

October 17th-23rd: The Reverend Prebendary Mary Bide, Sub Dean

October 24th-30th: The Reverend Canon Dr Rob James, Chancellor

October 31st: The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor

The Cathedral’s Director of Music, Jeremy Cole, is always pleased to hear from parents of

prospective choristers.

Scholarships and additional bursaries for Wells Cathedral School, which all choristers attend, are

available. For more information, or about choral scholarships at the Cathedral, please telephone

01749 832204 or email [email protected]

At certain services throughout the year, incense is used to enhance the festal nature of the day.

These services are marked with an asterisk (*).

Selected translations of anthems which are not sung in English may be found towards the back of

the Services and Music List, following the final listed week.

No photography or recording of any kind may take place during services, concerts, or rehearsals

without the express permission of the Chapter.

Tibi, Christe, splendor Patris (Victoria)

Tibi, Christe, splendor Patris

vita, virtus cordium

in conspectu Angelorum.

Votis, vocis psallimus

alternantes concrepando

melos damus vocibus.

Collaudamus venerantes

omnes coeli milites

sed praecipue primatem.

Coelestis exercitus

Gloriam Paraclito,

Qui trinus et unus Deus

Extat ante saecula. Amen.

You, O Christ, the Father’s splendour,

Life and virtue of the heart,

In the presence of the angels

Sing we now with tuneful art,

Meetly in alternate chorus,

Bearing our responsive part.

Thus we praise with veneration

All the armies of the sky;

Chiefly him, the warrior primate,

Of celestial chivalry,

Michael, who in princely virtue

Cast Abaddon from on high.

By whose watchful care repelling -

King of everlasting grace -

Every ghostly adversary,

All things evil, all things base,

Grant us of your only goodness,

In your paradise a place.

We sound with sweet voices

the glory of the Father,

We sing about the glory of Christ,

of the glory of the Paraclete;

The Triune God who existed

before the world began. Amen.

Words: Office hymn for the feast of Michaelmas, attributed to Rabanus Maurus (776-856),

fuderunt,

The souls of the saints rejoice in heaven,

they who have followed in the footsteps of Christ;

and because they shed their blood for love of

him,

they rejoice with Christ without end.

Music: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1526-94)

TUESDAY 12 OCTOBER

O quam metuendus est (Marenzio)

but the house of God and the gate of heaven.

Et unumquodque coram facie sua ambulabat

ubi erat impetus spiritus illuc gradiebantur

Each moved straight ahead; wherever the spirit

would go, they went, without turning as they

went.

Only Luke is with me.

Words: Ezekiel 1.12, 2 Timothy 4.11

Music: Rebecca Farthing (b. 2000)

SATURDAY 6 NOVEMBER

Geistliches Lied (Brahms)

Laß dich nur nichts nicht dauren mit Trauren,

sei stille, wie Gott es fügt,

so sei vergnügt mein Wille!

Was willst du heute sorgen auf morgen?

Der Eine steht allem für,

der gibt auch dir das Deine.

Sei nur in allem Handel ohn Wandel,

steh feste, was Gott beschleußt,

das ist und heißt das Beste.

Amen.

Do not be sorrowful or regretful;

Be calm, as God has ordained,

and thus my will shall be content.

What do you want to worry about from day to

day?

There is One who stands above all

who gives you, too, what is yours.

Only be steadfast in all you do,

stand firm; what God has decided,

that is and must be the best.

Amen.

Words: Paul Fleming (1609-40)

Music: Johannes Brahms (1833-97)
