Every minute – but unique miracles

I have been wonderfully fortunate these last few weeks to be able to enjoy the miracle of a brand-new baby granddaughter – and this time I was the fortunate re-cipient of her very first smile! Every time I come across a baby I am astonished once again by the sheer wonder of the intricacies of human bodies in miniature – awed by the potential in that tiny unique human being – and I see the love and joy in the baby’s family. Every time a baby is born its parents want to share their joy with their family, their friends and their community. And sometimes they want to publicly share their joy with God and his family, the church.

The Church of England is currently sharing the results of the national research they’ve done on the subject of baptisms – so the first thing I need to share with you is what I learned at the day conference organised by the C of E in Peterborough Diocese. Baptism and Christening are the same word from two language origins – Baptism comes from Latin, Christening from old English – so BOTH are equally valid but most people in our country use the word Christening.

Christenings are a real privilege for our churches – but they are also a responsibil-ity. A really positive effect occurs if they’re done well and the family feels that the whole church has made the effort to turn out to welcome them and their new baby – it makes the parents and godparents particularly feel that the church cares about them and is serious about the responsibilities they are undertaking for this young life.

The conference speaker told us about a young lady who had good positive experi-ences when she attended a friend’s child’s christening, then her own child’s, then a wedding, and shortly afterwards her grandmother’s funeral. She started telling a work colleague about these experiences which enabled the colleague to invite her to come to a service at her own local church – and now that young lady is a con-firmed and active member of the Church of England. We often don’t see the ef-fects of the seeds we’ve sown – but we do see the effects of seeds others have sown – in young and older people.

Jesus told us to go and make disciples of all nations, and to baptise (christen) in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. So please make every effort to come to services in your church when there is a baptism – for in doing so we are obeying our Lord’s command. Mary

Continuing below is the beginning of an excellent article by Dave Hill of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in common use within the church broken up under various headings: These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories. Feast: A day of celebration associated with the life of Our Lord, of the Saints, or days of thanksgiving (see BCP pp. 15-18). The Principal Feasts are Easter Day, Ascension Day, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, All Saints' Day (Nov. 1), Christmas Day, and the Epiphany. Fifty Days of Easter, The: From the Great Vigil of Easter up to and including the Day of Pentecost. Great Vigil of Easter: The Great Vigil of Easter is the climax of Holy Week and the begin-ning of the Fifty Days of Easter celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord. It begins at sunset on Holy Saturday, and runs until dawn on Easter Sunday. Good Friday: The Friday before Easter Day on which the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated (BCP pp. 276ff). Holy Saturday: The Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

ISHAM CRICKET CLUB www.ishamcc.co.uk END OF SEASON REPORT - PART ONE Senior cricket At the time of writing (mid-September) the cricket season is almost done and dusted but for one critical exception. The first XI have one important game to play against Wellingborough Indians which needs to be won to maintain our Division One status. Positive news next time hopefully! Again, as last year, the second XI have yo-yoed between promotion and relegation throughout the season before eventually finishing in the top half of Division Six. Hats off for the Shoebox Appeal 2016! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could send 200 shoeboxes from the 5 Churches and village schools again this year? Earlier in the summer I received feedback on the impact these packed shoeboxes have. It was very moving. One comment stayed with me; on receiving a hat in his box one child put it on and refused to remove it. It made me think! Then act! Using oddments of wool I began knitting hats and persuaded Hazel Lassou to join me. We have a lovely variety (mostly made by Hazel!) These hats will be distributed in all the churches in the benefice in October when Operation Christmas Child gets launched once more.. Do chose one to add to your box ! Margaret Buchanan

GARDENER’S CORNER by Alistair Peak

OCTOBER 2016

I’m so lucky being in touch with nature every day. It’s wonderful to see plants grow as the old adage ‘from tiny acorns grow great oaks’. The last of the hedgerow and garden fruits i.e. Chestnuts, Sloes, Pears and Apples bring an end to harvest. As you only have four weeks to make the most of daylight before the clocks change (go back), enjoy the wonderful colours that this time of year brings both in the garden and in the countryside around us. Due to the good hot summer we had, there should have been a good build up of sugar in the plants and this should result in a spectacular colour display as the leaves change ready to fall, especially in wooded areas. At this time, if you have water features it might be a good idea to cover them with netting to prevent falling leaves silting them up. If you have pumps in your water features it’s a good idea to flush them out and clean the filters, giving the motor a longer life. Now that it’s time for the seasonal tidy up remember our wild life (even if they do bring in seeds that produce unexpected plants) and leave some seed heads. Leave some twigs, leaves and logs to encourage hedge-hogs and frogs, who in turn will help keep some of the pests away, this does-n’t have to be a big area. As your vegetable plots become vacant it is a good idea before they get too wet with the winter weather to dig them over rough, leaving the winter weather to break the soil down. Remember in your crop rotation to add organic matter for top growing vegetables but not for root vegetables, this will help the soil become ready for spring planting. Alistairs’ Tip: When digging over the soil, don’t try and do it all in one go, little and often is best and avoids battering your body! Like any other athlete warm up first.
