ELEMENTARY
by Mark Horton
If you are reading this over breakfast, try and get your bridge juices flowing by considering this lead problem from Round 6:
Board 2. Dealer East. NS Vul. [ 7 6 ] A J 6 5 { K 10 8 6 } 9 5 3
Your initial pass leads to the following auction:
West North East South — — Pass Pass 1] Dble 3] 3[ Pass 3NT All Pass
Your choice of card? Not all bridge deals lend themselves to a Holmesian style analysis, but it can sometimes
be the only way to reach a winning conclusion.North started with a take-out double, but did not support spades. It is therefore unlikely
that he holds four cards in the suit.North must have a heart stopper (unless he happens to be Professor Moriaty and is
playing a Game of Shadows).Declarer is likely to have a source of tricks - that is surely centered on a good club suit.Leading our suit will make declarer a present of a heart trick, which might be all the
help he needs. However, if we can get partner in, there is a very high chance that a heart return will sink declarer’s ship.
We have to hope that partner has an entry, but which suit, spades or diamonds is the better bet?
It’s time to make your choice before I reveal the full deal:
Board 2. Dealer East. NS Vul. [ K Q ] K 9 { Q 7 4 } A K Q 10 7 2 [ A J 3 2 [ 7 6 ] Q 10 7 4 3 ] A J 6 5 { 9 5 { K 10 8 6 } J 8 } 9 5 3 [ 10 9 8 5 4 ] 8 2 { A J 3 2 } 6 4

I imagine that East reasoned that the combined effect of North’s double and failure to support spades made it marginally more likely that his partner’s quick entry was in spades and he went with the [7. West took the ace and returned the ]3, which would have given declarer a nasty guess if he happened to hold ]KJ. The defenders cashed five tricks in the suit for +200.
Only one other declarer went down in 3NT. After an identical bidding sequence Marion Michielsen led the ]6 and declarer won with the king and cashed his clubs. East discarded a diamond, a spade and the ]A, West three spades and the {5. Hoping that West had been squeezed, declarer played a diamond to the ace - and became another victim of the ‘third in hand gang’.
Remarkably, the fate of another 3NT contract turned on the opening lead:

East led the ]Q and West took the ace and returned the ten for the jack and king. East tried the ]6 next, but declarer put up the eight and was +660.
East led the ]5 and the defenders took the first five tricks.I recall that in his brilliant Killing Defence, Hugh Kelsey opined
that with East’s hand a low heart was best, as you have no entry. Give East a certain entry and an honour is right.
In their ground-breaking work Winning Notrump Leads, David Bird and Taf Anthias reveal that the computer confirms with an entry the honour is best, even when the accompanying spot cards are poor.
3NT was reached 18 times. It failed on the ten occasions where East started with a
low heart. To the other eight defenders I can only offfer the

The ABC Murders
by Mark Horton
Agatha Christie’s ABC Murders is considered to be one of her best efforts. If you happen to have read it you will understand why William Wilson might be somewhat less concerned than Adam Ashworth about the possibility of a ‘copy-cat’ series of crimes. At the bridge table it is possible to perpetrate all manner of crimes, although they are usually inadvertent rather than premeditated. From our ABC collection, Group B appeared to be the one to follow going into the last round before the knock-out stage.
On Board 3 NS reached 2] via 1NT-2{*-2] and East led the }Q. Declarer held [A1096 ]K4 {KJ103 }A86 and dummy [75 ]Q9732 {Q874 }K3. If you think the lead suggests length in clubs then that might point to the opening leader possibly being short in trumps, and the winning line is to win the club in hand and play the ]4, which sees East’s ]A hit thin air. Neither declarer got it right in this match
With the score 1-0 to Fredin after 7 deals along came:

East led the ]7 for the queen, king and ace and declarer played a spade to the king and a club for the three, eight and ten. He took the heart return and cashed the }A. A diamond saw East take the ace, cash the }K and exit with a heart, ensuring one down.
You can understand why North bid 4}, but on this layout both 3NT and 4[ were possibilities and defending 3] doubled would have been reasonable.
North led the {5 for the nine and ten and South switched to the [10, North winning with the queen and playing a second diamond, Declarer taking the ace and playing a heart for the nine, ten and jack. North cashed the }A and then played two rounds of spades and then scored a ruff with the ]A which added up to three down, -800 and a juicy 14 IMPs.

McIntosh led a more testing heart, and when declarer took a second round of trumps he could no longer get up to ten tricks, Black recovering the IMPs lost on the previous deal.

Which was your Bridge career’s worst moment and why?
What’s your opinion?
... ! ?
Brad Moss« I have had many heartbreaking losses. I think the one that stands out the most was the 2014 fi nals of the US trials. It was just such a hard fought, close match against Nickell. We lost 35 in the last segment to lose by 8. »
Thomas Bessis« Losing the fi nal of the Bermuda Bowl in 2017 by 2 imps in our home country left a big mark. »
Joe Grue« That’s a tough one, because I tend to block out bad moments and try to suppress them out of existence completely. »
Marion Michielsen« In Orlando I was defending two world titles and ended up playing only a few days of bridge because we lost early in the Knock-out in both the mixed and women teams. Another low was when we didn’t get selected for the Swedish team for the World Championships in Wuhan last year. We had worked very hard and it is a goal for me to make it to the open team and hopefully win the Bermuda Bowl some time. It felt like we were very close to get selected but we didn’t make it. Hopefully we will get a chance next year. »David Gold« Going down in 5 diamonds on the last board of the world championship fi nal in 2008. I thought it was likely the match and was scared to leave the table. Turned out it wasn’t. Thats the worst I have felt though. »
Sanna Clementsson« One big disappointment was at one of the fi rst junior championships I played when we were in the lead throughout the last day, but dropped two places on the last two boards of the tournament. »
Michael Jordan« I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. »
