Dear Members

This is the first newsletter of the new year and2017 is a special year as it is 25 years sinceQuarry House opened and HASSRA Leedswas born. HASSRA Leeds are planning aseries of events to mark our 25th anniversary– we may even recreate the calendar wedid for our 10th! You’ll hear more aboutthese during the course of the year.

The year also starts with a time ofconsiderable change within one of our hostDepartments. At the end of this month theDepartment of Heath will be some 30%smaller than this time last year. A lot of mycolleagues have decided to seek pasturesnew – myself included. As I am retiring – I canno longer remain as your Chairman so after17 years I shall be handing the reins over tosomeone else. For those of you who areleaving did you know you can remain as aHASSRA member you can find details andinformation here.

I remember my first day working here(28/09/92) when we were only able to enterthe building through the “players tunnel”which led to the lift in the south east cornerof the building. The building and our workinglives have changed enormously since then.Who remember s not having access to theinternet at our desks? How did we manage? For me the one thing that hasn’t reallychanged is HASSRA and how importanthaving such an organisation in theworkplace is. HASSRA’s strength is itsvolunteers and HASSRA Leeds has beenblessed to have some of the best – a massivethank you from the bottom of my heart to allof you. Please keep up the good work!

I’m not the only one who because we’vedecided to leave cannot remain as aHASSRA Leeds official – Peter Blinston will be

standing down as Treasurer. I would like torecord my personal thanks to Peter for all hishard work and his support for HASSRA Leeds. It’s right that we have a treasurer whoquestions our use of members monies andkeep us on the straight and narrow – ThanksPeter.

If anyone out there has been thinking aboutgetting involved please don’t think anylonger - in the words of a famous sports warecompany JUST DO IT! The AGM will be on 22February in the Woodpecker andapplication forms for membership of theCommittee are included in this month’snewsletter.

As I said at the beginning a number of us areleaving together and will be marking theoccasion with a few beverages in theWoodpecker on Friday 27 January. The planis to start as we did back in the day at 4pmwe might even have a good deal on theprice of beverages!! Please do join me andmy colleagues as we say goodbye to work inthe Civil Service.

It has been my pleasure and my greathonour to have been your Chairman. I haveso many fond memories I couldn’t begin tolist them all! I’ve been to some interestingplaces; had fun evenings in the Woodpeckerand beyond as well as been extremelyfortunate to make many great friendsincluding meeting my partner throughHASSRA. It is with great personal sadnessthat I resign as your Chairman and send mybest wishes to your new Chairman andCommittee.

The Quarry House Choir, which is financiallysupported by HASSRA Leeds, had the busiesttime spreading Christmas cheer throughoutDecember.

2 December - Our first performance saw 10of us at Newton on Ouse church as part oftheir "Friday night is music night" concert. Theconcert featured singers, musicians andsoloists and we were wonderfully looked afterwith food and warm drinks. It was a greatstart to the festive season.

6 December - Members of the Quarry HouseChoir, formed part of the Staff choir in theLeeds Schools’ Music Association (LSMA)Christmas Festival Concert at the Leeds TownHall. This showcased 350 strong local school &youth choirs with the City of Leeds YouthOrchestra.

Other guests included South Asian Arts UKand Leeds Silver Steel Sparrows. Leedsroyalty, the Lord Mayor of Leeds was there asa distinguished guest!

8 December - 3 gigs in a day! The choirbrought Christmas to colleagues, with 3sets, one each in Quarry House restaurant,Quarry House West reception and LeedsOne. It was lovely to watch people stop andlisten and video us, as they came for theirlunch or arrived in reception for theirmeetings. At the Leeds One building atCrown Point we received rapturous applausefrom colleagues on the balcony. Theyweren't expecting a 20 strong choir!Colleagues on the floors above receptioncaught us too.  A number of colleagues saidit ‘brought a tear to the eye’ I am hoping in agood way! As well as “why haven't you beenbefore?" and "come again anytime".

9 December - St Vincent’s Christmas sing-a-thon took place over 2 days in the TrinityLeeds shopping centre. There were 16 choirssinging out against poverty over 16 hours.

13 December - The Choir was invited toentertain the out-patients at St Gemma’sHospice on the day of their annual ChristmasLunch. The soloist and duets wowed theaudience and fellow choristers alike. Wewere also asked to sing a few songs in theward. The choir received the followingmessage after the event.‘Thank you so much for today, it was reallylovely hearing the choir sing again, everyone here expressed how muchthey’d enjoyed it’

14 December – The choir led the parish-ioners at the Parish Church of St Hilda forthe Carol Service for businesses of CrossGreen. The service consisted of popularcarols including ‘While Shepherd watch

their flocks’ sang to the tune of ‘On Ilkla Moorbaht ‘at’. The choir also sang two carols un-accompanied. Afterwards it was nice tochat to the congregation and clergy and wewere all treated to a hot roastsandwich! One of us won on the raffle too!

I’d previously been to Warehouse 23 in thesummer so was delighted to find that The Beatwere due to play there on the penultimate Fridaybefore Christmas. It did mean I had to leave theworks Christmas do after only two drinks but I sawthat just as a small contribution to avoiding aserious alcohol excess. Although they do selldrinks at Warehouse 23 as well …So, this was the other version of The Beat (RankingRoger and his son, Junior Ranking), having seenThe English Beat in York (Dave Wakelin) a fewmonths before. I have to say that I would reallystruggle to separate the two if both announcedrival gigs at different venues on the sameevening. But that’s only because both areexcellent. Skiprat were the support band atWakefield, a bit more ‘heavy ska’ than the mainattraction, but still brilliant for all that.By the time that The Beat were ready to appear,it had become pretty full with an audience thatperhaps was over-represented by people of myadvanced age but still a decent number of thosewho were definitely under thirty. And one guywho came to York and put on a virtuoso displayof mechanical, high energy but low skill, dancing(he looked like a rugby player preparing for ascrum and generally shuffling about in an invisiblesmall fenced off area) was back in Wakefield.Again, doggedly shuffling about with a look ofpure concentration in a ska world of his own.I enjoyed the way that The Beat came on stage, the bass playing ambling on (most mistook himfor a roadie doing one last sound check) to startslowly picking out the bass line to “Stand DownMargaret” to be joined by the drummer,

then guitarist, then trumpet player and finally theRanking family, pere et fils to properly launch thesong. The Beat have what sounds to be an excellentnew album (called “The Bounce”) out, whichthey featured, but also pretty much all of their oldhits. Songs like “Hands Off, She’s Mine” “Doors ofYour Heart” “Too Nice To Talk To” and “Save It ForLater” never get old.In such a bijou venue, with a fiercely loyal crowd,it must be said that it’s been a while since I’veseen such an exuberant outpouring of joy. Thecombination of upbeat, catchy tunes, flawlessplaying and some top-notch toasting from Junioris just irresistible. And maybe some people hadleft their Christmas drinks a bit later than me. Butwe’d all still love to see Dave Wakelin andRanking Roger take the stage together one lasttime.Incidentally, a short set was shown on Vintage TVthe other night, always worth trawling that Skyviewing guide as they often have unexpectedpleasures like that pop up amongst the oldvideos of dross. Sorry, Bros. So, regardless of what for many people was anawful 2016, the night provided a beacon of light.Proof, once again, that spirited joyfulness canmake you forget everything, if only for oneevening.

The Beat – Warehouse 23 Wakefield, December 16th

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there aresufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the un discounted "nonmember" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to thesame destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on orbefore the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice anindividual's eligibility for future trips.
