Dear Members,

As many of you have probably noticed, Club membership is growing! We have seen a terrific response from our membership drive and I would like to welcome all of our new members! We are implementing a“New Member Meet & Greet” that will take place the first Sunday of every month. This is a great way for new members to get to know other fellow members. I encourage both new and existing members to attend!

October will start with a bang down at the Club with the first annual Johnny Martin Cup Car Show Oct. 3rd and 4th. There will be some very unique and beautiful cars on display. Johnny will be announcing the winners Saturday afternoon and we hope to have those cars on display at the Club for the month of October. Woody’s Q Shack, from Alamosa, will be parked here all day Satur-day with his amazing BBQ. That alone is reason to come down to the Club!

I also want to extend a thank you to all of our Founding Members. Without your support, the Club would not be where it is today. The Hub Cap wall with all of our Founding Member’s names is truly representative of the spirit and camaraderie each one of you have brought. Your continued support is extremely appreciated.

Here’s to the “Fall Harvest” and yet another beautiful month of living in Colorado.

In the Kitchen with Chef Jeremy

Roasted Butternut Squash SoupYield: 6 servings

4 pounds whole butternut squash (about 2 medium), halved lengthwise and seeds removed2 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 stick)1 medium Granny Smith apple (about 8 ounces)1/2 medium yellow onion8 fresh sage leaves2 1/2 cups vegetable or chicken broth2 1/2 cups water1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as needed1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more as needed1/3 cup heavy cream1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds, for garnish (optional)

Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle.Line a baking sheet foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves. Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, about 50 minutes to 1 hour.Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the 1 tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. When the squash is ready, set the baking sheet on a wire rack until the squash is cool enough to handle. Using a large spoon, scoop the flesh into the saucepan with the sautéed apples and onions; discard the skins.Add the broth, water, and measured salt and pepper, stir to combine, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, stirring occasionally and breaking up any large pieces of squash about 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cream.Using a blender, purée the soup in batches until smooth, removing the small cap (the pour lid) from the blender lid and covering the space with a kitchen towel (this allows steam to escape and prevents the blender lid from popping off). Alternatively, use an immersion blender. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve garnished with the pumpkin seeds, if using.

Chef Jeremy’s Artisan Bread and Pizza Dough cooking class was a smashing success! The entire group learned the intricacies of bread making and ended with some very tasty pizzas the group made themselves. Don’t miss the next class on October 16th. Sign up on the members’ website.

Featuring...

Wayne Saunders is an extremely talented painter, bodyman-genius. Wayne is from Birmingham, England where he worked at Futura Concept Design for over 16 years. Wayne worked on concept cars for Bentley, Astin Martin, Jaguar, GM, Ford, McLaren and Rolls Royce. He also painted the Queen of England’s car, a drum set for Iron Maiden and other TV specialty cars. He and his wife Sue moved to the United States in 2006 and now reside in Colorado Springs. In 2008 Wayne opened his business called Alternative Automotive Design (AAD). Johnny Martin and Wayne met shortly after and that is when Wayne painted the 1962 Corvette for Johnny’s Auto Trim & Rod Shop. Since then Johnny and Wayne have become good friends and continue to work together on big projects such as the 1957 Cameo, a 1955 Chevy for a wonderful lady from El Paso, Texas and a custom 1957 Chevy which is sure to be a Ridler contender. Johnny stated, “We are truly blessed to have Wayne and Sue involved in our program. Without Wayne’s knowledge and talents life would be different. He is truly an amazing craftsman.”

During our October Coffee and Cars series, Wayne will be leading a demonstration on the art of wood grain painting on a hood ornament from a 1959 Jaguar. He will also have on display the drum he painted for Iron Maiden and lots of pictures of his work so please join us at Johnny Martin’s Car Central in the detail area on October 11, 2014 from 10:30-12:00.

Wayne is our featured speaker for Coffee and Cars on October 11th.

Here are a few items that he has artistically painted that are on display at the club. You must come and see to appreciate the beauty.

Johnny Martin After high school Johnny was awarded a wrestling scholarship to Willmar, Minnesota. After a wrestling injury, Johnny decided it was time to move in a different direction and enlisted in the Army National Guard Reserve for a four-year term. Due to Johnny’s father’s illness, Johnny returned home and attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, where his goal was to be a teacher and coach. Johnny changed his coaching plans and began to teach himself the art of upholstery in his living room by night and continued as a brick mason by day. Johnny ultimately decided he would pursue upholstery full time, and he began his business in 1989. With many years of hard work and dedication, Johnny became nationally recognized for his beautiful custom interior creations. Johnny then expanded his business and began to complete custom hot rod builds. In 2011, Johnny was recognized at the Detroit Autorama show in which he received a Great 8 Ridler Award for restoring a 1962 Corvette named Elegance.

Pictured here is a restoration project that Johnny is taking on for Susan Druery of El Paso, Texas. This 55 Chevy is sure to be a beauty.

Featuring Johnny & Ashlee

Ashlee Martin is an employee of Johnny Martin’s Car Central and yes, she is the daughter of Johnny Martin him-self. Ashlee was raised in Alamosa and spent many hours in the shop by her dad’s side and has a great understanding of the car world. Hoping to bring the passion for cars into her life, Johnny and Jessica Martin decided to surprise Ashlee with her very own 1966 Nova Super Sport on her 16th birthday. Although the car was a birthday surprise, Ashlee spent many hours working with the guys in the shop to help pay for her Nova. To Ashlee, the car is more than just a car, it’s a way to bring her close with her father. The Nova is currently in primer stage and the next step will be to shoot the custom-made color Ashlee helped design with her dad by her side. Ashlee is extremely proud of her father and is grate-ful for the values he has instilled in her. Johnny is not only there for Ashlee in the car world but involved in everything she chooses to pursue. In 2013 Ashlee ran for the title of Miss Colorado where again, her dad was by her side….from heels to wheels.

“Tune Up”Henry Ford came up with the phrase “tune-up” when he was working on his first automobile prototype. The first ignition system was made up of spark plugs and ignition coils. As these coils worked, they would emit

a buzzing sound, and if they were all working together correctly they would all buzz at the same level and be

“in tune.” If they weren’t working together, this meant the vehicle wasn’t running at it’s best, and these coils

needed to be adjusted – or tuned-up – to make the car run better. Today we still use the phrase “tune-up” for

auto maintenance services that can help improve a car’s engine performance.

Ted was gracious enough to allow Johnny Martin’s Car Central display

his winning Chevy in the Club.
