A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends,

Grateful. That's what I feel. I am grateful to be a part of this gener-ous and caring congregation. The last weekend of September, many of you donated clothing, books, toys, dishes, and household goods to the Deacons' Free Market and Free Lunch!

The tables in the main room of the Chapel were almost groaning with the piles of items carefully sorted and placed where our customers could find just the right treasure for their home or family.

Some of our guests expressed surprise that everything in the Chapel was, as the signs said, FREE! They had to be convinced when we didn't give them a bill. It was most gratifying to be able to assure them, "Yes, it really is!"

My family and I experienced your compassion and generosity last month when you surprised me with a lovely bouquet of fall flowers and a free-will donation, initiated by the session, to my mother's fa-vorite organizations. The children and grandchildren of Jane Buzan say, "Thank you!"

Life is a journey of hills, valleys, bumps in the road, and surprising de-tours. We need the company of family, friends, and our faith family with us on that journey.

Let us give thanks for the God we know in Jesus who loves us, and wants us to know and care about others. Let us continue to care for others as the Body of Christ at First Presbyterian of Hackettstown.

I'll see you there! Birda Ferguson, Pastor

CHOIR NOTES BY: LORINDA RAVO

October 1: One World, One Communion-Senior Choir On this World Communion Sunday, the Senior Choir sings a new anthem by one of our favorite composers, Pepper Choplin. This charming communion anthem celebrates the unity of sharing the act of breaking bread with all be-lievers worldwide proclaiming, "there is room for everyone."

October 8: Head and Shoulders-Little Lights Sunday School Choir

Our Little Lights make their 2017-2018 debut as they sing “Head and Shoul-ders” , an action song complete with some ASL signing as well! You won’t want to miss these precious voices raising their voices in song.

October 15: Make Me A Servant, Lord-Senior Choir

This sweet anthem by John Williams and Benjamin Harlan encourages us all to look for ways that we can serve our risen Lord.

October 22: Ten Thousand Reasons-Senior Choir

How Great Thou Art-FPCH Ringers

Matt Redman’s praise song has quickly become a favorite all across the world. The beautiful lyrics: Bless the Lord, oh my soul, oh my soul. Worship His Holy name. Sing like never before, oh my soul. I’ll worship your Holy Name will touch your hearts, and we’re sure you’ll leave worship humming this melody! Our FPCH Ringers Choir plays an arrangement that combines How Great Thou Art with “This is My Father’s World”.

October 29: Lord, Teach Your Church

As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Ref-ormation, the Senior Choir sings a new anthem by Joseph M. Martin. The text of this arrangement is appropriate for a time of reflection and renewal. "Lord, teach your church to love. Renew our walk of faith. Inspire our hearts to give. Let us live a life of praise."

LITTLE LIGHTS SUNDAY SCHOOL CHOIR

Our Little Lights will be singing on Sunday, October 8. When the children ar-rive at church, please help them put on one of the robes, located outside of the children’s area in the sanctuary. During the children’s sermon, they’ll be sharing their talent with our congregation, and we can’t wait!

GET TO KNOW YOUR ELDERS AND DEACONS

This month, we introduce Elder John Mark Wojcicki and Deacon Cyn-thia Luques.

John Mark was practically born at FPCH. He was confirmed April 13, 1997, ordained an Elder in 2002 and a Deacon in 2011. He returned to the session in 2005 and again in 2013. John Mark works at local farms, including Bush's Fruit Farm, and as our very own church sex-ton. He serves on the Building and Grounds Team, sings in the choir, and substitutes in the Tone Chime Choir. He and Camerin look for-ward to becoming parents this month!

Cynthia and her husband Don joined FPCH in 2012. She was ordained a Deacon in 2015. Cynthia is a retired school teacher and a wonderful teacher in our Vacation Bible School. She is the treasurer for the Board of Deacons!

ADVENT DEVOTIONAL PASSAGES REQUESTED This year during Advent we will be able to share stories and thoughts about Advent and Christmas, written by members of our own con-gregation. Choose one day between December 3rd and December 24, and write a paragraph or two—that's all we need. The sign up sheet is waiting in the sanctuary just for you! The deadline is October 15.

DEACONS SEND A NOTE OF THANKS

On Saturday, September 23rd, the Deacons of our church spon-sored a Free Market for the public to ascertain any home goods and decorations that they may need for their homes. Many members of our congregation volunteered their time and energy to assist in this worthy endeavor and also provided household items for the public. In addition, members donated homemade soups, chili, sandwiches, and baked goods for the free lunch that was offered to the public. We thank you for your generosity and look forward to the next event in two years.

in your faith. 4) It will bring you closer to God. 5) You can learn more about music. 6) You have a guaranteed seat in church for worship ser-

vices! 7) For Senior Choir-you don’t have to worry about what

Our choirs, both vocal and chime choir, are open to anyone who would like to give it a try. You DON’T need to be able to read music. You DON’T need to audition. You DON’T need to sing alone, EVER! You DON’T need to be able to at-tend every rehearsal or every Sunday. What you do need is a desire to share in the joy of making music, of leading worship, and of being welcomed and accepted as soon as you walk through the door.

FPCH Ringers rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6:40-7:20 pm, and FPCH Senior Choir rehearses on Thurs-day evenings from 7:30-8:30 pm. Come on in, and give it try. You know you’ve always wanted to!

As a reminder, we are moving our next Bible Study out by week, so we will meet next on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 PM. We will be covering weeks 2 and 3 in the attached Study Guide for the book of Acts. I look forward to seeing everyone there! Blessings, Ryan

STEWARDSHIP COMMITMENTThe annual Stewardship Commitment letter and response card are available for pick up in the church sanctuary or you may have received it in the mail. Please respond before November 5th, Stewardship Commitment Sunday, when they will be dedi-cated to the Lord. The return card gives you the option to in-dicate “no specific pledge” so that you can receive a box of en-velopes and send what you are comfortable with when you can.

Please remember--God has given us everything we have. When we willingly give back to God, it becomes a means of grace through which the Spirit of God transforms our hearts and turns the gift into a spiritual blessing for us and for the benefit of our church and its endeavors.

If you have already responded, we thank you. If you have not, it is never too late to make your commitment to God.

In God's Service,

Your Stewardship Team

(Including Stewie, our Stewardship Mascot)

SOCIAL MEDIA and FPCH When you were away on vacation this summer, were you able to keep up with what was going on at FPCH? If you checked in on the church’s web-site: www.fpchackettstown.org or the church’s facebook page: First Presbyterian Church Hackettstown, you could see photos, articles, de-scriptions, and more of the happenings of our church. And that doesn’t stop now that the summer is over. Be sure to check in with our social media presence, and if you have photos, articles, or other ideas for con-sideration of inclusion, talk with Al or Lorinda Ravo! Thanks.

PLEFF to Meet at Draught House Oct 25

The PLEFF group enjoyed dinner at Mattar’s in September, and we’re looking forward to our next outing, October’s dinner at the Draught House in Washington. Dinner is at 6 PM and all ladies are welcomed to join in the fun. Contact Winnie Slachetka at [email protected]. for more in-formation and to reserve your spot.

LADIES WHO LUNCH The Ladies Who Lunch traveled to Flemington to Teaberry’s at the end of September for a lovely lunch at the tea house. We’re now planning our October lunch get together, and if you’d like to be noti-fied of date, time, and location, please talk with Sharon Heil or Lorinda Ravo.

HALLOWEEN CANDY TITHING!

For the third year, we will be collecting Halloween candy to ship to soldiers serving our country overseas through an organization called “Operation Gratitude”. Last year, we were able to ship approximately over 50 pounds of candy, and hope to top that this year! How can you help? Use this as an opportunity to help your children understand the idea of sharing their bounty with others. We suggest that for every 10 pieces of candy the children get during trick or treat-ing, they give 1 piece to the col-lection at church. Please have the children bring their candy on the first Sunday after Halloween (November 5), as it has to be shipped to Operation Gratitude no later than November 15. And if you have left over candy that wasn’t handed out, and want to donate that, we’ll gladly accept that as well!

YOUTH GROUP TO BE FORMED Attention all youth in grades 7-12: First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown will be starting a youth group. There will be games, Bible study, trips, and possibly a mission trip. Hope to see you there. Stay tuned for the start date!

GOD'S LOVE ENDURES FOREVER September 9, 2017, First Presbyterian Church lost a long-time member and friend, Cornelius (Neil) Kappers, Jr. Neil confirmed his faith publicly in 1958. He was ordained a Deacon in 1970 and an Elder in 1983. He served several terms on the Session, most re-cently in the class of 2008.

Neil enjoyed keeping the church going! He was often heard but not seen working in the "innards" of the church, chapel, or manse basements where pipes, boilers, and all things mechanical were his play-ground.

Neil was known as the "church mouse" for leaving notes around, reminding everyone to keep doors open or to not turn particular switches on (or was it off?).

His sense of humor, kindness, and work-ethic will be missed.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius (Cor) and Gerrit-dina (Dina) Kappers. Please keep members of his family in your thoughts and prayers: Dottie Kappers, Luke, Lisa, Albert, Melissa, Lauren, Matthew, Morgan, Hunter, Elizabeth, Briana, Rita, Charles, Kara, Ineke, Pat, Thomas, and Pearl.

We will dedicate a new tree in the yard of the church October 15th in Neil's name.

Let us give thanks for the God of the Resurrection whose love brings us hope!

Sharing God’s BountyThe Importance of Trust

Trust is an important part of a relationship between spouses, between parents and children, between employers and employees, and between friends. To illustrate the importance of trust, I will share a story from for-mer President Eisenhower who described an event from his earlier days on a Kansas farm.

“An older farmer had a cow we wanted to buy.” the President said. “We went over to visit him and asked about the cow’s pedigree.”

“Don’t know,” replied the farmer.

“Well, how’s her butterfat production?” we asked.

“Don’t know.”

“Let’s see,” my dad finally said. “How many pounds of milk does she give each year?”

“Don’t know that either,” said the farmer shaking his head. “But I do know she’s an honest cow and she’ll give you all the milk she has!”

“Well,” Ike concluded. “I’m kinda like that old cow. You can always trust me to give you everything I have.”

Life would be so much easier if we could take people at their word. It doesn’t take long to discover that talk is cheap, so we are forced to decide whom or what we will trust. Where do we place our faith and confidence? Do we trust God as our source of life and things? Trusting is not an easy thing to do. We may trust God in some things but not all things. By nature, we are self-reliant, and we live in a society that admires self-reliance and discourages trust in anyone other than oneself.

Trust knows that God loves us and wants the best for us. Complete trust in God is seeking God himself, rather than his gifts. Knowing God, through Christ, brings about a self-surrender and total trust in him. Then our trust is not dependent on what he gives, but who he is.

In the same manner that God proves he is trustworthy, God wants us to prove our trustworthiness. The apostle Paul wrote, “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). How blessed we are that our God can be trusted totally and that he loves and trusts us enough to be his ambassadors and representatives here on earth. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, we can be faithful to his trust.

DID YOU KNOW?… by: Deb Gulick-Shepherd

In 1785 the congregation voted to purchase a glebe, or parsonage farm, from Charles Sartoris. The 120 acres cost 325 pounds or $866. The Rev. Joseph Campbell (1809-1838) moved into town in 1810 in a house at the site of the current Bea McNally’s. In 1812 or so he moved into a parsonage nearly across from the church which at that time was located in our Chapel. In 1889 the old parsonage property was sold and a new manse was built in the rear of our current church building on land owned by the church.

ADD TO OUR CHURCH ARCHIVES

The church historian is looking for some Annual Reports that are missing from the archives. If you have any of the following years and would like to donate them or loan them so a copy could be made, please give them to Deborah Gulick Shepherd directly or place them in her mailbox in the church office. The following are needed: any-thing prior to 1948; 1949; 1950; 1991; 1992; 1997; 1998; 2001; 2002. Thanks!

Thank you from the Kappers –Fritschie FamilyI cannot express my gratitude for all the prayers, cards, texts, emails and visits while Neil was so sick. I don’t know what I would have done without the support of my church family during the difficult time. And now the cards and calls keep coming in from all over. Thanks to all that came to pay their respects too. Special thanks to Rev Birda, Rev Jeff Archer and Rev Bruce Stevens. You made Neil’s funeral the best. Thanks to Lorinda and Torey for the beautiful song; I don’t know how you could get through it but you did and it was beautiful. I felt the love and all of our children saw how much Neil was thought of and loved. Those that sent flowers I would like you to know that my daughter and daughter in law took all the arrange-ments apart, got vases, and took 22 vases of flowers down to the House of the Good Shepherd. Dottie Kappers

WORLD COMMUNION Sunday, October 1st at 10 a.m., we will celebrate World Communion with Christians around the globe.

It is an opportunity to realize again that the Body of Christ is bigger and more far-reaching than our own local congregation.

One important part of this day is the dedication of the Peace and Global Witness Offering, one of the four special offerings authorized by the Pres-byterian Church (U.S.A.). The offering supports ministries

A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to pro-mote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering to connect with the global witness of Christ's peace. Mid councils retain an additional 25% for ministries of peace and reconcilia-tion. The remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.

Please give as generously as you are able on October 1st and celebrate the Lord's Supper with us!
