Heart To Heart

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus; Why is Jesus Christ of Nazareth the center of the Christian faith? Because He is God’s Anointed One(Messiah), God’s complete and grace-laden answer for all the brokenness of this world. A church can only go so far on good looks, cutting-edge programs, eloquent preaching, awesome music, warm fellowship, super-cool people, and top-notch physical surroundings. All these are important elements, but what counts most is Jesus. The Book of Hebrews is my favorite book, because it is the fullest expression of the study of who Jesus was, is and will always be. Just to inspire you to study Hebrews on your own (or in the Monday morning Bible study) in chapter one verse three (1:3) it reads: “And He (Jesus) is the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He (Jesus) had made purification of sins He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…”

One week in 1987 I read the entire Book of Hebrews and marked every chapter why it is “Better” to be a follower of Jesus than any other religion. Chpt 1. He is a Better messenger. Chpt 2. He has a Better message. Chpt 3. He is a Better apostle. Chpt 4. He gives a Better opportunity for rest. Chpt 5. He is a Better high priest. Chpt 6. He is the author of Better things. Chpt 7. He is the Better author and finisher of our faith. Chpt 13. He gives a Better Love “…having offered one sacrifice for sins for all times, He sat down at the right hand of God.” Hebrews 10:12 Pastor Wayne

TEACHER’S CORNER – by Paul Sims There are two possibilities for when we die: nothing happens, or something happens. As Christians, we reject the first possibility, because we believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. We believe that one day we will be with Jesus. Within the second possibility there are two further possibilities: we go straight to heaven, or we go to a “holding place” before we go to heaven. Adventists believe that when someone dies, their body turns to the dust from which they were created and their soul returns to God. The person will be resurrected on the day when God judges all people. The period between death and resurrection will be as sleep to the person that has died. Catholics, on the other hand, do not subscribe to the “sleep” idea. They believe in purgatory. In the Catholic view, the purpose of Purgatory is not to remove sin – Jesus did that on the Cross by shedding his blood – but to remove the effects of sin. In 1999, Pope John Paul II explained that physical integrity is necessary to enter into perfect communion with God. Therefore, "the term purgatory does not indicate a place, but a condition of existence", where Christ "removes ... the remnants of imperfection". Catholics believe that some people go straight to heaven, but that others, while forgiven of their sins, are not yet free from the effects of sin when they die. In purgatory, these effects are removed – the person is made clean and thus fit for heaven. Tradition (not Scripture) holds that while his body was in the tomb, Jesus descended into hell and preached to the dead there. Some versions of the Apostles’ Creed include this observation. Prayer for the dead, and thus the need for purgatory, goes back to the earliest Church thinkers. What do you think? Martin Luther, the father of Protestantism, had this to say on the subject. “The existence of a purgatory I have never denied. I still hold that it exists, … though I have found no way of proving it incontrovertibly from Scripture or reason… I myself have come to the conclusion that there is a purgatory, but I cannot force anybody else to come to the same result.” Luther concludes there is no heresy in rejecting the idea of purgatory.

At the end, we have to say that we simply do not know what happens after death except that we as Christians believe we will one day be in heaven with our Creator. How this happens is not unequivocally stated in the Bible. Perhaps a conversation between two characters says it best:

Stan: Is there life after death? Bob: You might want to work on your life before death a bit before you worry about that.

The Thursday UMM prayer/breakfast group is continuing their study book titled "10 Life-Charged Words: Real Faith for Men", written by Derek Maul. We are only into week 3 and each chapter is independent of the previous one so don't feel you can't "catch up"! This collection of meditations speaks clearly to men’s

concerns and experiences. Come join us for the remaining 7 weeks. The UMM will be hosting the WEF meal on Nov. 7 and are planning a SURPRISE! All men are

encouraged to participate in preparation, serving and clean-up; The More the Merrier! There is also a Conference BBQ Cook-off/Fall Festival on November 17th at 3MC. Each of the 8 new

districts will compete and the judges will be the D.S’s. All are invited! Ben Garner

Loads of Love will meet on Monday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m. to prepare and deliver meals for our shut-ins. If you know of someone who should be added to our list for a meal or a card, please let us know. If you are interested in participating with this very special ministry, please come join us, even if you cannot come every month! For more information, contact Gloria English at [email protected] or 919/772-4285. The FRIENDSHIP Circle will meet on Wednesday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. We will have a guest speaker to tell us how the District functions, how our dues money is used, and be available to answer any questions any woman of the church might have about United Methodist Women. Come join us for fun and fellowship! For more information, contact Gloria English at [email protected] or 919/772-4285 The Evening Circle of UMW would like to invite all the ladies of the church to join us on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall for our monthly meeting. We will provide snacks and childcare. We will look back on the life of Sarah and discover historical messages for our modern lives. If you would like a copy of our Women of the Bible study book please contact Becky McNeill or Tina Golian. We look forward to seeing you on the 9th!

Our Wake Interfaith families will be joining us starting on Sunday, October 21st through Saturday,

October 27th. Please be looking for the sign-up sheet to be posted in the Narthex for your opportunity to assist with this ministry. Please prayerfully consider working with this ministry to the homeless. If you

October 2012 Building Committee Update

As of September 17 we are awaiting the permit from Wake County to begin the site improvement. The Auction committee worked diligently for the past months making plans for the Building Fund Auction. Appreciation is expressed to everyone who worked at the auction, prepared food, solicited or donated auction items, or assisted in other ways. We are especially grateful for Randy Creech who first suggested the project, secured the storage trailer, loaned needed items of equipment and was the chief auctioneer. As of September 9, we have received $495,007.95 or 48.66 % of the $1,025.310 pledged in May 2010 for the new building. We have also received $45,993.06 in non-pledged gifts. Minutes of the Building Committee are on file in the office of Kim Tingler and are available for review by Saint Andrews Members. Thanks you for your support, patience, understanding and encouragement in working through the Building Plan Process. Please share your thoughts and concerns about the work of the Building Committee with Vince Revels, Chair of the Building Committee.

Are you ready for the holidays? The next three months will be pretty busy in the mission life of SAUMC. We have the WIHN families coming to stay with us for a week - we have the backpack buddy program to help give children an opportunity to have meals during the weekends when they are away from school - we have the Turkey Tree ready to plant in the Narthex, where it will be recycled into the Angel Tree. And we already have about 100 seeded Operation Christmas Child boxes growing in different homes around the community. I know everyone gets busier and lives get a little more hectic, but take time to stop and reflect the meaning of the holidays: thanks for all we have and sharing with those less fortunate than we are. There are children who will only have a Thanksgiving meal because you bought a food gift card - and probably eat a few more days on the leftovers. There are children whose parent or parents are incarcerated - living with a relative who may have a hard time playing Santa on Christmas -- and you will put a smile on their faces when they get a present from mom or dad. There are children from poor families, living in poor countries, who will only have a Christmas if you fill a shoebox (or several) with small, inexpensive gifts - and your love. There are people around you who will have a smile because your shared your holiday smiles with them. So slow down a little, thank God for what you have, and do as Jesus said -- take care of my sheep. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done this year and for the things you will accomplish in the last few months of 2012. Patti Hendrickson, Missions Committee Chair

The Pathfinders' Sunday School class invites you to join us in early October as we begin using key questions to compare Biblical Christianity with cults and other religions. Among the groups we will review are: Jehovah's Witness, Mormons (Latter Day Saints), Seventh- day Adventists, Christian Science, Unification Church, New Age, Scientology and Islam. Our goal is to be sure we have a firm grip on the Word of God so that we are able to identify anything that disagrees with the only one God, the only one Word, the only one truth, the only one faith and the only one hope. Key questions of comparison include: (1) Who is God? (2) Who is Jesus? (3) Who is the Holy Spirit? (4) How to be saved (5) What happens after death? (6) Other facts, the founder, beliefs and practices. The study ends with how to recognize false prophets and false teachings and the ABC's of sharing the plan of salvation with others. Please see Carolyn Hare with any questions.

HOPE MINISTRIES… We are in need of assistance with the Hope Ministries program at Garner UMC. On the first Saturday of every month, Saint Andrews UMC is responsible for providing the meal to the homeless families. Saint Andrews next day that we are responsible for Hope Ministries is Saturday, October 6th. We are looking for volunteers to help at Garner UMC from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. Please contact Carolyn Hare at 779-0276 if you can help.

As we say “goodbye” to summer we are in full swing with Guppies and Tweens. We have started

rehearsals for our Christmas Pageant, we are making plans for our annual Harvest Festival to be held on October 21, and we are walking in our very own SAUMC CROP Walk with funds raised being

donated to the Raleigh CROP Walk. We have also implemented some changes to our schedule: we will now (once again) meet from 5:00-

7:00 with supper being served at 6:30 so that those who need to leave early may do so without missing our fellowship activities.

Thank you for your support as we look forward to another school year as these young Christians seek

to grow in their walk with Christ. May God continue to bless each of you - the family of God worshipping as the family of St. Andrews.

In Christian love, Sally

What are Guppies and Tweens??? As part of our Children’s Ministry program, St. Andrews has two groups for fellowship. Guppies are children between the ages of 4 and First Grade and Tweens are in Second through Fifth Grade. In

addition, the 45s are our fourth and fifth graders who will meet for special events and extended Tweens sessions. We meet on Sunday evenings for fellowship and music, and supper is provided by

parent volunteers. We also have a children’s worship time during morning worship which we call W.O.W.

(Worship-Our Way) We look forward to welcoming new members to these groups and hope that children who are in this

age range will join us as we work together to Serve Praise And Grow In Christ!

We continue to covet the prayers of our church family, as these youngest Christians seek to grow in their relationship with Christ through

fellowship, service and worship.

Peace, in Christ, Sally

Counselor’s blahba …

Quiet time keeps you grounded

Is your crazy schedule and busy lifestyle taking away your time with God?

When was the last time you scheduled alone time with God? Is it every Sunday while going to

church? Is it between school and practice? Is it before a competition or game? Is it the 2

minutes of prayer each night before you fall asleep? (you didn’t fall asleep during your

prayer…did you?)

Some of us are pretty good at keeping that date with God on a daily / weekly basis. Most of us

are not.

When Jesus went off by Himself to pray, did He talk all the time, or did He revel in God’s

presence, free from distractions? Who knows? But He made a habit of spending time alone with

God. He needed to distance Himself from the daily demands of being Jesus, The Son of God.

I’m sure His calendar was pretty full and demanding but failure was not an option and He knew

His time was short. But yet, He still made time to be alone with God.

My prayer and hope is that you will make time everyday to be alone with God. I challenge you to

fight for it, cherish it and make it a habit. I promise you it will be time well spent!
