Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

Welcome to Term 4, a time of fulfilment and celebration.

As we commenced Term 3, I commented that the four terms of our school year could be likened to the four movements of a symphony. Beethoven’s great 9th symphony came to my mind and to extend the metaphor, as we arrive at Term 4, I am thinking of this term as an Ode to Joy!

Our opening assembly last Tuesday set this tone as we congratulated so many students for outstanding achievements across multiple disciplines from Visual Art to Aerobics, Mathematics and the Humanities. A particular highlight of the assembly was a report on the inaugural Immersion Tour to Alice Springs in the September holidays. I am sure you will enjoy reading the report in this edition of the Spirit from Mr Stephen Campion, with the accompanying photographs giving us a glimpse into the very rich experiences for both students and staff. Congratulations to all who participated in this immersion tour. You were wonderful ambassadors for our College.

Whilst this term is short, we work at a demanding pace to enjoy it to the full. The following events celebrating milestones and student achievements across all learning areas and co-curricular groups provide a glimpse into our Ode to Joy.

are from left to right: Afu Pulini, Grace Carlson, Ella Hambleton, Elizabeth Smyth, Josephine Dryer, Sidney Hunwick and Clare Ryan. Each one spoke from her heart with passion and conviction and deep appreciation of the College. They were inspirational.

As I listened to their messages and observed their beautiful manner, I could not but help contrast the substance of their messages with what we are hearing from the potential leaders of the most powerful nation in our world, campaigning and debating for the right to be President of the United States. The latter vision brings incredulity and despair, the former, our Mt St Michael’s young women, give us joy and great hope. As we gathered for a photograph around the Mary Aikenhead statue, I said to them, that this is what our faith and the accompanying values gives us.

We extend our warmest congratulations to College Captains for 2017, Clare Ryan and Afu Pulini who I know will lead the College with passion and commitment to all that we value.

Year 12 Retreat – Friday 14 October

This is always a special day with the opportunity for the Year 12s to reflect on their days at Mt St Michael’s, the values of the College that have become part of who they are and to pray with gratitude for the firm friendships that have been formed over five years.

Co-Curricular Awards Assembly – Tuesday 18 October

In this assembly our 2016 Student Leaders reflect on the year in their areas of responsibility and recognise the contribution and achievements of students in Mission, Academia, Culture and the Sporting arena. Parents are

warmly invited to attend and view the assembly from the mezzanine floor in the Sophia Centre. Thanksgiving Liturgy and Morning Tea – Friday 21 October

For those who support the College, through the Parents and Friends or Music Support group or lend a hand at our numerous College functions please come, if you can come, to our morning liturgy of thanksgiving. It is a token, but it is an important opportunity for the College to say thank you.

Year 12 Mother Daughter Garden Party – Friday 21 October

This is a new event as part of our farewells to Year 12s and their mothers, to be held at the Rotunda on the Convent Lawn. It complements the Father Daughter breakfast that we hold at the very beginning of the Mt St Michael’s journey. The response to the event has been terrific and we thank the Foundation and the Alumni for this initiative and for their subsequent organization.

MusicFest 2 – Tuesday 25 October

The MusicFest 2 theme is Australiana. The program will include some old favourite sing-along-numbers as well as repertoire that aims to express the ambience of the unique Australian landscape. Performers and audience members will get into the spirit of the night by wearing “bushie” style clothing with checked shirts, jeans, boots and maybe even akubras and beards! The parent support group will be providing hospitality. All music ensembles and choirs will perform and it will be a great “aussie” celebration.

World Teachers Day – Friday 30 October

The passion and dedication of our teachers to giving their very best to every student every day is another hallmark of our College. I know it is appreciated by students and parents. The value of their work cannot be measured but it can be celebrated.

MSM Celebrates – Thursday 3 November

For the whole College, this is one of our most significant events of the year. MSM Celebrates gives us the opportunity to recognise student achievements and excellence across the holistic dimensions of our education in the academic, cultural and sporting arenas. We also acknowledge dedicated commitment to the Mission of the College and outstanding leadership, along with the premier awards for Year 12 students. With addresses from students and performances from ensembles in our music program this is an immensely entertaining and heart-warming evening.

Final Day of Classes for Year 12 Students – Friday 4 November

This day will come all too quickly. It is memorable and emotional with final classes bookended by breakfast in the Sophia Centre and the Farewell Assembly both led by the Year 11s.

There will be many more highlights to come.

I pray that this short term may be a joy-filled time for all members of the Mt St Michael’s community.

Sincerely,

Alison Terrey

Congratulations

Chloe Scriggins and Melissa Drummond from Year 10 who received a High Distinction on the Australian History Competition. This competition tested students ability to apply their general knowledge and also evaluate evidence and sources, based on the Year 10 Australian Curriculum. The following Year 10 students received a Distinction in the same competition: • Josephine Barr-Thomson • Alyssa Di Michele • Isabelle Dredge • Emma Lugge • Jamila Rodbert.

Over the September school holidays, Katie Scott won three gold medals at the Schools National Swimming Championships held in Darwin. Well done Katie!

Lara Turner and Olivia Ruysch represented the Qld Catholic Netball Association Challenge Team in the Under 14s Suzuki Challenge Cup (netball) held in Townsville during the holidays. They placed as runners up in their division which is an excellent achievement. Well done to both students.

In the September holidays, MSM string students Jade Madden and Elena Bontempi represented the College at the state level by attending the Griffith University Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Program. SHEP Qld featured four Wind Orchestras, two String Orchestras, a Celtic String Ensemble, four Vocal Ensembles, a Symphony Orchestra and Big Band. Selected from more than 2000 students, nominated by 169 state, private and distance education school, participants have travelled from Mount Isa, Cairns and the border to represent their schools and work alongside renowned international and national conductors. Running Thursday September 29 to Sunday October 2, four days of intensive rehearsals culminated in five Grand Finale Concerts, open to the public, on Sunday October 2 in the Conservatorium Theatre. Jade and Elena participated in a full symphony orchestra conducted by Dr Mark Laycock from Wichita State University, USA. The program was intensive but very enriching, and the knowledge gained from this experience was extremely valuable.

Over the September holidays, the Mt St Michael’s College AeroSchools Team travelled down to Bendigo to compete in the 2016 National AeroSchools Aerobics Championships. The standard of competition was extremely high from a large number of schools across the nation. Our students performed their routines with excellent execution which resulted in four teams becoming National AeroSchools Champions in their division. Two other teams also received a bronze medal in their division with many other teams placing in the top 6. The students represented the College with confidence and should be very proud of their professionalism at the competition. A big thank you to Kate Williams, Kath Page and coaches Kristiana Feron-Farrell & Darcy Lawton who travelled with the team and helped the girls at all times. We look forward now to the 2017 competition and more exciting competitions.

Immersion Tour to Alice Springs

MSM's first ever Immersion Tour Group to Alice Springs took place from September 19 to September 28 2016.

This ten day trip in conjunction with Catholic Missions, offered our students a privileged insight into the daily lives of Aboriginal people and communities in and around Alice Springs.

As a group, we were invited by leaders to share in parts of Indigenous culture, ask questions, seek clarification and explore Aboriginal Spirituality from a Catholic perspective. Opportunities to share in current issues and their possible causes and solutions were also explored. Catholic Mission partners with the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, the Missionary Sisters of Charity, Catholic Care and SVDP facilitated access to fringe communities, classrooms, community groups, and health clinics. A day visit to the Santa Teresa and an overnight to Uluru were also included.

As participants we had the opportunity to develop an appreciation of our indigenous culture which is very different from their own. We learned about and were confronted by the huge disparities in wealth between their own lifestyle and that of the communities and people with which we engaged. In our post immersion time we will undoubtedly begin to critique these realities from a perspective of justice and gospel values. This immersion experiences may also help to deepen participants’ spirituality and strengthen their commitment to living their faith in ways that will build a more just world.

For the group of thirteen Year 11 students who committed to the Immersion, the trip was full of new and exciting experiences, allowing them to develop their leadership skills and to form new friendships with fellow students outside of their normal friendship groups.

It also helped them to strengthen their understanding of the culture and history of the Arrente and Anangu people whose land we were visiting, and through their interactions with these communities and individuals they forged many strong and meaningful relationships.

As a group, we hoped to live out the spirit of MSM, and the teachings of Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of Charity, by living out their missionary purpose and fully understanding the value of the experiences and wisdom we gained.

The group was fortunate enough to have many amazing experiences during the ten days, visiting the Santa Teresa and Amoonguna communities, the Hetti Perkins Aged Care Facility, Uluru, Kata Tjuta and the Old Telegraph Station.

The students enjoyed conversing with the elders at the healing and spirituality centres, Mass, the Hettie Perkins Aged Care Facility and many local Indigenous artists. During these exchanges, they were able to gain a full understanding and appreciation for the history, culture and spirituality of the Arrernte people whilst also being warmly welcomed into their community.

Other highlights of the trip were our students interactions with the children in Santa Teresa, Yeperenye school, and Amoonguna. In particular, the group had the opportunity to teach a lesson at Yeperenye school, where they shared in the children’s uncontainable enthusiasm and boisterous energy, and their obvious spiritual connection to their country and families.

This Immersion is a once in a lifetime experience which we were all blessed to have been a part of. We hope that next year’s Year 11 students will be eager to take up this opportunity, and we can guarantee that those who do will return enriched by the culture, history and most importantly the relationships formed with individuals within the communities.

We thank our colleagues from Catholic Missions for assisting us every step of the way with this inaugural Immersion for Mt St Michael’s College, Ms Fran Kelly and Mr Jay Too. I also thank my colleague, the HOD RE, Mrs Elizabeth Foxover for her invaluable participation in this Immersion experience and for her professionalism and unwavering support in all aspects.

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2016.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the

Ministry Care

mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2015 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]

20 September 2016 Dear Resident/Business owner

Mirrabooka Road bridge replacement project Out-of-hours works notification

Brisbane City Council is pleased to advise that works for the Mirrabooka Road bridge replacement project are progressing well with installation of the deck units now complete. Council will be undertaking works in late September and early October to install the bridge’s deck slab which will involve pouring concrete on top of the recently installed deck units. The concrete pour will be required to occur in three stages to allow sufficient time for the concrete to cure. Three separate concrete pours will occur over three weekdays between Wednesday 28 September and Monday 10 October, weather permitting. The works undertaken on these three days will be required to start outside of general working hours from 4am to facilitate the large amounts of concrete to be poured and the curing time required. Residents in close proximity may experience some construction impacts such as increased noise, lighting and truck movements. Council will make every effort to minimise these temporary construction impacts where possible. Unfortunately, due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off. We apologise in advance for any disruption these works may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding while these important works are carried out. If you would like any further information please contact the project team on 1800 884 681 or email [email protected]. For information outside of business hours please call Council’s 24-hour contact centre on (07) 3403 8888. Yours sincerely Michael Hughes Project Manager
