families would like to share what they
would value in a School App, I would be
pleased to receive the feedback.
Staff Changes
Three of our much-loved staff are leaving
their current roles at SHCS at the end of
the year which has necessitated the School
advertising three positions;
* Mrs Megan Moore is changing from a
full-time teacher to a part-time teacher
and as a result the School is seeking to
replace her classroom teaching role. We
are delighted that Mrs Moore will remain
at the School in a new capacity.
* Mr Don Taylor has accepted the role of
Deputy at a Christian school in Canberra
and we warmly congratulate him on this
appointment. We thank him for his
investment in many areas of the School
and pray for a smooth transition in
January 2017.
* Mr John Ramm will retire at the end of
this year. After over twenty years at SHCS
and almost forty years in education Mr
Ramm will retire from teaching in order to
continue to support his charitable mission
in Vanuatu and the support of his Church.
We look forward to giving Mr Ramm the
send-off he deserves later this year.

Grandparent’s day was a wonderful
example of the positive impact the extended
family can have on children. It was a
pleasure to see the joy on the faces of our
students as they welcomed their
grandparents with performances, activities,
classroom visits and afternoon tea. This
year we chose Proverbs 16:31 as our key
verse which says “Grey hair is a crown of
splendour; attained in the way of
righteousness.” This verse and many others
contained in Scripture, challenge the oft
held view in Australian society that grey
hair signals the beginning of the decline. Far
from accepting this view, the Scripture
elevates the wisdom attained with age to
the place of royalty. May we continue to
teach our children to value and respect the
grandparents God has given and the
investment the modern grandparent makes
in the life of their grandchildren.
Endeavour Community Relations
The School has now received the final
report from Endeavour Community
Relations; I thank all the staff, parents and
students who returned surveys and
completed interviews. I am most excited
about implementing some of the many
suggestions contained in the report. One
such change is our desire to produce a
School App for use from the start of 2017.
The App will contain all relevant School
information including: notices of events,
interactive calendar, news items and
various other functions. If any of our

A Grand Day Out
Eric Clapton. Maya Angelou. Jack
Nicholson. Louis Armstrong. Isaac
Newton. Barack Obama.
What on earth do they have in
common? They were all raised by
grandparents. Greatness, it seems, can
indeed skip a generation. But is it
coincidence? Or does it come down to
some really great grandparents?
Fifty years ago, they had to duck and
cover under school desks. Today, the
nuclear age may have passed, but it
seems it may have taken the nuclear
family with it. In the face of increasing
home fragmentation, our 21st century
grandparents seem more vital than
ever as they continue to teach, shape,
and guide our future generations.
Despite this, there seems to be an
increasing amount of negativity
surrounding our older citizens these
days, from talk of ‘the ageing
population’ and the subsequent
strain on the healthcare system, to
accusations that retiree investment
properties are keeping housing
prices sky high, leaving young
people no alternative but to spend
mortgage repayments on avocado
breakfasts. But in all the furore, it
seems that the baby boomers have
been thrown out with the bathwater.
Certainly, there are select members
of the nouveau rinse who have
adopted a ‘burn the inheritance’
attitude, riding off into the sunset
upon three-wheeled Harleys and
raving to Barry Manilow. Yet
alongside them are equal numbers of
genuinely selfless individuals – men
and women who have raised their
own children for twenty years and
sent them from the nest and into the
world, only to have duty call once
more as a new generation dawns.
And it is their response of steadfast
kindness and generosity of spirit
which we gather together annually
to recognise at Southern Highlands
Christian School.
On Wednesday, SHCS hosted their
Grandparent’s Day celebration,
gathering together the Nannas and
the Pas, the Grannies and
Granddads, the Nonnas, Nonnos,
Omas and Opas, in order to serenade
them with songs and supplicate
them with scones. Led by music
teacher Danielle Koek, the students
assembled a programme varying
from Elizabeth Barret-Browning’s
‘How Do I Love Thee’ to the
contemporary ‘Lighthouse’ by The
Rend Collective, and took the
opportunity to express the love and
gratitude they hold for their elders.
An old Italian proverb states, “If
nothing is going well, call your
grandmother.” A truer word of advice
may never have been spoken, but there
is also a time to call your grandmother
to tell her it’s time - as Gough would
say - to serve her as she has served you.
SHCS Head of Junior School Catherine
Leigh stated that, “As a school
community, we are eternally thankful
for our grandparents. We appreciate
their words of encouragement, their
prayers, their practical help and
involvement in the school.” This spirit
of thanks is echoed in the verse chosen
for this year’s event – Proverbs 16:31.
“Grey hair is a crown of splendour;
attained in the way of righteousness.”
At Southern Highlands Christian
School, they’re not just grandparents.
They’re royalty.

Spring Soiree
On a Friday evening the 21st October
approximately 50 parents and staff
gathered at Southern Highlands Wines
to listen o some amazing music from
our senior School orchestra, enjoy
some nibblies and a wonderful meal
and have fun with some old friends
and some new. Thank you to all who
had a hand in organising the event.
We were particularly impressed by
the amazing lightning and
