27th Sunday Ordinary Time ~ God is ‘in it’ for the long haul. We estimate 3,700 years of “salvation history” beginning with the time of Abraham to the present. The earth is estimated to be about 4.6 billion years old. The Milky Way galaxy that contains the solar system was probably formed around 13.6 billion years ago. The universe is calculated to be about 13.7 billion years old. The beginning of civilization, dated from 160,000-

130,000 years ago, was the beginning of the African/Oceanic Ice Age Civilization, as Modern Humans displaced the Neanderthals in Africa and Oceanic areas. Looking at these dates alone, one must conclude that “God is ‘in it’ for the long haul”. Today Isaiah speaks of a fertile vineyard producing wild grapes. God proclaims that he would “take away its hedge, give it to grazing, let it be trampled, make it a ruin, (neither let it be) pruned or hoed, (let it) be overgrown with thorns and briers, not send rain upon it.” Israel and Judah are respectively referred to as the vineyard and the cherished plant. God would take from them the fruitfulness he had promised because they produced nothing as they lived for “bloodshed” and refused to seek “justice”. In the gospel we hear another vineyard story in the parable of the vineyard and the evil tenants who leased the vineyard. Instead of producing a yield of good grapes, they beat the servants and even killed the son, the heir, of the owner of that vineyard. Even the Pharisees were able to answer Jesus’ question: “What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” They answered correctly: “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.” What they didn’t understand was that he was referring to them. “Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” God does not destroy. God does not punish this act or that. God does not kill. God is ‘in it’ for the long run. If indeed humans have existed on this planet for 160,000 years, God definitely has ‘hung around’ with us, put up with a lot, loved us in spite of ourselves, and continues to grace us and gift us without conditions and without limits. As always the subjective variable is expressed in this question: “Are we open to and willing to produce good fruit?” God is ‘in it’ for the long run. Are we?

November is upon usE We are only weeks away from the month of

November – the month of ‘giving thanks’. The

material reason for donating to the parish is to

pay for all of the expenses that exist because we

exist as a church. We ‘raise’ money in order to

cover all of the expenses incurred. The spiritual reason we

donate to the parish simply put is: ‘to give thanks to God for

all that God has given to us’. We raise money and cheerfully

give our personal donations to ‘live in that thankful spirit’. The

material without the spiritual makes us not much more than a

business. The spiritual is what binds us in a giving/receiving

relationship with God that helps us to appreciate the truth that

ALL comes from God and ALL belongs to God and ALL is gift

from God to us!

27 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ Dios está ‘presente' a largo plazo. Estimamos 3,700 años de la "historia de la salvación", empezando con el tiempo de Abraham hasta el presente. Se estima que la tierra tiene alrededor de 4.6 billones de años. La galaxia de la Vía Láctea que contiene el sistema solar se formó probablemente hace alrededor de 13.6 billones años. Se calcula que el universo tenga aproximadamente 13.7 billones de años de existencia. El

comienzo de la civilización data de hace 160,000-130,000 años, fue el comienzo de la Civilización de la Era del Hielo Africana/Oceánica, cuando el Ser Humano moderno se desplazó a las Neandertales en África y a las zonas Oceánicas. Tomando en cuenta las fechas solamente, uno debe concluir que “Dios ‘está presente’ a largo plazo. Hoy, Isaías habla de una viña fértil que produce uvas silvestres. Dios proclama "Le quitaré su cerca y será destrozada. Derribaré su tapia y será pisoteada. La convertiré en un erial, nadie la podará ni le quitará los cardos, crecerán en ella los abrojos y las espinas, mandará a las nubes que no lluevan sobre ella". Israel y Judá se denominan respectivamente como la viña y la planta amada. Dios les quitará la fecundidad que había prometido porque no produjeron nada sino que vivieron para “matar” y se negaron a buscar la "justicia". En el evangelio escuchamos otra historia de un viñedo en la parábola de la viña y los viñadores malvados que alquilaron la viña. En lugar de producir una buena cosecha, golpearon a sus siervos e incluso mataron al hijo, al heredero del dueño de la viña. Aún los fariseos fueron capaces de responder a la pregunta de Jesús: "Cuando vuelva el dueño del viñedo, qué hará con esos viñadores?" Ellos contestaron correctamente: "Dará muerte terrible a esos desalmados y arrendará el Viñedo a otros viñadores que le entreguen los frutos a tiempo" lo que no entendieron fue que él se refería a ellos. "Por esta razón les digo que les será quitado a ustedes el Reino de Dios y se le dará a un pueblo que produzca sus frutos." Dios no destruye. Dios no castiga este acto o aquel. Dios no mata. Dios ‘está presente’ a largo plazo. Si, efectivamente, los humanos han existido en este planeta durante 160,000 años, Dios sin duda ha 'permanecido’ con nosotros, ha aguantado mucho, nos ha amado a pesar de todo, y nos sigue llenando de su gracia sin condiciones y sin límites. Como siempre la variable subjetiva se expresa en esta pregunta: "¿Estamos abiertos y dispuestos a producir buenos frutos?" Dios esta ‘presente’ a largo plazo. ¿Lo estamos nosotros?

Se nos vino Noviembre encima...

Estamos a sólo unas semanas del mes de noviembre — el mes de "dar gracias". La razón material para donar a la parroquia es para pagar todos los gastos que existen porque nosotros existimos como Iglesia. ‘Recaudamoss’ fondos para cubrir todos los gastos incurridos. La razón espiritual por la que damos a la parroquia es sencillamente para: dar gracias a

Dios por todo lo que Dios nos ha dado". Recaudamos dinero y damos alegremente nuestras donaciones personales para ‘vivir en ese espíritu agradecido’. Lo material sin lo espiritual no nos hace mucho más diferente que un negocio. Lo espiritual es lo que nos une en una relación de dar/recibir con Dios que nos ayuda a apreciar la verdad de que TODO viene de Dios y TODO pertenece a Dios y TODO es don de Dios para nosotros!
