In addition to composing and arrang- ing for his own albums, Cables has contributed to recordings by Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson and many others. He is noted for his fresh interpretations of classic com- positions and for his innovative style of writing. Bassist Essiet Okon Essiet, who settled in NYC after stints with the Famoudou Don Moye Quartet, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, continues to tour and perform nationally and internationally. One of jazz’s busiest drummers who’s been called “a master of shading and color, and the kind of timekeeper that could teach a clock new ways to tick,” Victor Lewis is a touring and recording veteran who has also been a faculty member of Rutgers University since 2003. GERALD CLAYTON – PIANO Four-time Grammy-nominated pianist/com- poser Gerald Clayton celebrates the inherent differences in musical perspectives that promote true artistic synergy. He performs and records with a host of jazz luminaries, including Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Terell Stafford, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. JOHN CLAYTON – BASS The patience he exhibits with students, the pro- vocative notes he chooses when he composes, the great sounds he coaxes from other musicians... these attributes pale in comparison to his cha- risma when giving a performance. This Grammy Award winner is one of the all time OCJP favorites. GEORGE COLLIGAN TRIO Portland-based, NYC native pianist, organist, drummer, trumpeter, teacher, and bandleader George Colligan’s musical style incorporates ev- erything from show tunes to funk, from free impro- visation to 20th-century classical music. He’s ap- peared on more than 100 CDs and recorded 24 of his own. Bassist Chris Higgins studied at Berklee and in City College of New York; after stints in New York City and Barcelona, Spain, where he recorded and toured extensively, he moved to Portland. Drummer Chris Brown continues to perform and teach privately in the Portland area, but is also a saxophonist and drummer with the 234th Army Band – and the son of legendary Portland drummer (and longtime OCJP supporter) Mel Brown. ED DUNSAVAGE – GUITAR Ed Dunsavage has lived in Ashland since 1990. Origi- nally from New Jersey, he has worked as a profes- sional guitarist and music educator for many years. He also works as artistic and education director for the Siskiyou Institute, a nonprofit arts and education organization based in Ashland. JEFF HAMILTON – DRUMS Originality is what versatile drummer Jeff Hamilton brings to the groups he performs with and is one of the reasons why he is constantly in demand, whether he is recording or performing with his trio – which includes pianist Tamir Hendleman and bassist Christophy Luty – or the Clayton- Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, of which he’s co-leader. HOLLY HOFMANN – FLUTE, BASS FLUTE Holly Hofmann has taken the flute from its middle-of-the- orchestra origins and made it a front-line instrument in jazz. She has earned the praise and respect of musicians and jazz aficionados for her bluesy, bebop-based improvisations and technical prowess. Holly has also been this party’s music director since 2007. RUSSELL MALONE – GUITAR An adept jazz guitarist with a clean attack and fluid, lyrical style, Russell Malone often plays in a swinging, straight-ahead style weaving in elements of blues, gospel, and R&B. He began working with Jimmy Smith in 1988 and went on to work with Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall throughout the 1990s, and continues to perform and tour with his quintet. THOMAS MARRIOTT – TRUMPET Seven-time Golden Ear award winner Thomas Mar- riott is a skilled instrumentalist, composer and pro- ducer, always seeking to expand the boundaries of jazz music in all its forms. Known for his innovative spirit and broad musical scope, Thomas continues to perform on stage, as a leader and alongside the top names in jazz. GRETA MATASSA – VOCALS Jim Wilke, Seattle jazz maven and host of the syndicated “Jazz After Hours” radio program, praises vocalist Greta Matassa’s “fearlessness in approaching material,” and Seattle Times critic Misha Berson described Matassa as a vo- cal chameleon who “can sound husky or crisp, ebullient or wailing, girlish or jaded.” MARY ANN MCSWEENEY – BASS A California native, now living in New York, Mary Ann’s strong, imaginative bass playing has received critical acclaim worldwide. She’s toured with numerous jazz greats and now travels and records with her own quintet. HOUSTON PERSON – TENOR SAX A South Carolina native, Houston’s big soulful tenor sound has given him legendary status all over the world. Known for his unique selections from the Great American Songbook, Houston is a Newport favorite. CHUCK REDD – DRUMS, VIBES A seasoned performer on both drums and vibraphone, Redd began performing and recording internationally when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio in 1980 at the age of 21. As well as leading his own groups, Chuck was a member of the Smithso- nian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra for 15 years. He currently records and performs throughout the U.S. RYAN SHAW – DRUMS In addition to his experience as a performer, Ryan Shaw can also been seen frequently performing with various pop and indie groups in the Los Angeles area. He’s also honed his skills as an arranger, writer, and chart maker by arranging and writing for jazz trios, combos, and big bands. MIKE WOFFORD – PIANO Having appeared on over two hundred recordings as a sideman, pianist Mike Wofford now continues to record and perform primarily as a leader, with his own groups and as co-leader in a quartet with OCJP Music Director and flutist Holly Hofmann. He also also performs with and arranges for their quartet’s Jobim and Ellington Tributes with string orchestra. BOSSANAIRE SEPTET A bossa nova rhythm section featuring two female vocalists, Bossanaire’s music is reminiscent of the 1960s-era classic “Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66” album, Stan Getz, and João Gilberto.
