The annulment process simply investigates whether a

sacramental bond may not have been created due to

the existence of a significant detriment. There are

many examples of heroic efforts by a spouse to make

their marriage work only to later discover in the

annulment process that a serious defect undermined

their loving and dedicated efforts.

Lastly, St. Paul wrote “the greatest of these is love”.

God loves you and me. If a marriage unfortunately

ends in divorce, then please contact me, Fr. Mike and

Fr. Paul if we can be of any assistance. Later, if a

person would like to learn more or to pursue the

Declaration of Nullity, then we can help you. Also,

Pope Francis has recently simplified the process and

reiterated that no one is prevented from this process

due to financial reasons. Many people have received

an annulment without the ability to donate toward

the cost of Archdiocesan staff, etc. We are loved

children of God who is always with us, even in the

most difficult of days.

The Gospel of Mark (10:2-16) may be difficult for many

divorced Catholics. Some divorced Catholics are remarried

outside the Church and unable to receive Communion

without a Declaration of Nullity for their first marriage.

Hence, some no longer feel welcome and pursue a Bible

based Church – ironically without the Eucharist - which

ignore the teachings of Jesus regarding the permanence of

marriage ignoring this difficult teaching of the Bible.

If you or someone you know is divorced, I encourage you

to consider the annulment process. This is not a Catholic

divorce but rather an investigation of the Sacramental

Bond of Marriage itself. The key question is did God join

the couple in a permanent sacramental bond? God is all

knowing and will not condone falsehood,

misrepresentation or hiding of truth. The annulment

process considers if one or both spouses were properly

disposed to enter into a sacramental bond. Here is a clear

example of when God would not join a couple in to a

sacramental marriage. John and Jane are to be married,

but John has a girlfriend on the side and no plans to stop

seeing her. Jane knows nothing of this. John lies when he

promises to be faithful to his spouse. God will not be

involved in this John’s deceit and will not join them

together in a sacramental bond. Hence, the annulment

process would declare that this attempt at the Sacrament

was “null” (Declaration of Nullity) and did not come into

being. The key to the Declaration of Nullity is from our

scripture today: What God has joined, men must not divide.

Many Bible Churches either ignore Jesus’ teaching on the

permanence of the marriage bond or invent a way to

justify breaking it. Some Bible Churches also teach that

adultery destroys or severs the bond of marriage. Hence,

the sorrowful scenario for a spouse to commit adultery in

order to divorce and remarry is then made possible. This

tragedy of failed Biblical interpretation (Sola Scriptura), can

lead to more pain and suffering. Jesus speaks plainly and

the Bible needs to read in the faith context Jesus Christ

gave to the Catholic Church who wrote the Bible.

Divorce is painful. People normally do not marry with the

intention of ever facing divorce. The annulment process

hopefully can be a healing process. Many divorced

Catholics express, “I was married and put my heart and

soul into it. Don’t say I was not married.” Please

understand the annulment process does not judge a person

or their love and dedication at making their marriage work.

Catholic Marriage Resources

Pope Francis, in his address at the 8th World Meeting of Families

in Philadelphia last weekend, admitted that marriage and family life

have many challenges, saying "Father, you speak like that

(supporting marriage) because you are single! Families have

difficulties. Families, we quarrel, and sometimes plates can fly.

"Marriage is an act of faith between a man and woman who are

both fragile and limited, but courageous enough to follow Christ

and seek to love each other as he loves them”, the Pope said.

There are many wonderful Catholic resources to turn to for help:

The Chicago Archdiocesan Office of Marriage and Family

Ministries website (www.familyministries.org)

offers information for the engaged, married, family life, and the

divorced. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has

an initiative entitled “For Your Marriage”

(www.foryourmarriage.org). This website can help you find a

support group, gives daily tips on Marriage, offers blogs, videos,

and more.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter (www.wwme.org) is a weekend

experience for couples who want to make a good marriage even

better. These retreats are held regularly in Elk Grove Village,

Crystal Lake, and Rockford, Illinois.

Retrovaille (www.retrovaille.org) is a program to help bring about

healing in troubled marriages. A program will be beginning in the

Chicago area on December 4, 2015.

Divorce and Beyond is a program used by the Divorce Ministry to

lend support and guidance. There is a divorce support group at

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Orland Park currently

meeting on Sunday evenings.

Our own parish priests; Fr. Joe, Fr. Paul, and Fr. Mike are

available to offer support and guidance. Call the Parish Office at

687-1370 to schedule an appointment.

Theology of the BodySt. John Paul II, in 129 short talks from Sept. of 1979 and November 1984, offered to the Church and the world a reflection on the body as God intended from the beginning. Today in the 21st Century we need theinspiration and truth of one of the greatest Catholic minds and teachers of the Catholic faith. This study willuse Christopher West's insights in his book, Theology ofthe Body for Beginners, as a backdrop to understandingthe late Pope's vision of sexual love. Come join us for this exciting adventure into deeper understanding of ouridentity ---"being made in the image and likeness of God".
