    Dear 4-H Members,

    This years themeof 4-H week LastingImpact was evident asmy son and I werewalking around theState Fair reminiscingabout when he and hisfriends were in 4-Hsome 10 years ago. Heshared, Momma, youmade us td everything

    Shooting Sports, Sew-ing, Cooking, LandJudging and anythingthat you needed 4-H

    Members to do or go.But those were the bestdays. We talked about

    some of our 4-H Mem-bers that got to meetFirst Lady Laura Bushand my own daughterwas babysat by theWhite House securitydetail at a conferenceFirst Lady Laura Bushhosted at TennesseeState University. Theimpact that trip alone

    had on our two dele-gates was remarkable.It was one of the youngladies first time flying

    A volunteer called interested

    in training our senior 4-H

    Members (14-18 years) in

    CPR. This training will teach

    life-saving techniques. If you

    want to pay $25 to become

    American Red Cross certified,

    you can do so.

    people know that 4-Hclubs are doing goodthings in our community,I ask that either your4-H Clubs join togetherto conduct some type ofdrive - clothes for theneedy, food and socksfor the homeless, do adrive for supplies for thehumane society or do-nation to help a local

    charity in the community

    where your club meets.

    4-H clubs could evenvolunteer with the Sal-vation Army to be bellringers during the Holi-day season. Pleaseremember to label yourdonations with nicelabels from your club. Ifyour club need labelscheck with me.

    Halloween SAFETY TIPS-

    S Swords, knives, and other simi-lar costume accessories should

    be short, flexible, and made of

    plastic..

    A Avoid trick or treating alone.

    Go in large groups with an

    adult along as a chaperone,

    especially with younger kids.

    F Fasten reflective tape to their

    costumes and bags so thatdrivers can see them better.

    E - Examine all their bounty to be

    sure that all their candies aresafe for consumption and

    check fruits for pin holes (from

    possible injections).

    H Hold flashlights so others can seeyou and you can see what

    youre getting for a treat.

    A Always test makeup in small partsof your skin to make sure

    there are no allergies, rashes, or

    swelling that would affect

    you.

    L Look before crossing streets and

    cross at only designatedcross walks..

    L Lower your risks by not wearing

    decorative contact lenses.

    OOnly walk on sidewalks or the far

    edge of a road, always

    facing the traffic.

    W Wear well-fitted costumes, masks,

    and shoes to avoid the

    possibility of a slip, trip, or fall.E Eat only factory-wrapped treats, avoid

    homemade treats

    unless youre totally familiar with thesource.

    E Enter homes only if youre totally familiar

    with the families

    or you are with a trusted adult; otherwise

    stay outside.

    NNever walk nearlive candles or other

    active flames. Be sure

    to wear flameretardant costumes.

    mal robots that were on

    in competition at the State

    Fair. Each year, 4-H teams

    of 2-3 youth built a Robot

    Animal and enters it in the

    state fair.

    October Is Bullying Prevention AwarenessMonth

    Every October, schools and organizations across the country join

    STOMP Out Bullying in observing National Bullying Prevention Month.The goal: encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and

    cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of

    bullying on all children of all ages. Wednesday, October 9 was Unity

    Day. Thats when scores of people around the country wear orange to

    join the movement to Make It Orange and Make it End!
