MANUFACTURING MAKES AMERICA STRONG!The Manufacturer & Business Association was proud to host northwest Pennsylvania’s 5th annual Manufacturing Day celebration on Thursday, October 4, at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie. This year’s event was an amazing exhibit of innovation, technology and career opportunities in today’s manufacturing industry. Manufacturers, vendors, high school and higher education institutions provided more than 50 exhibits, with demonstrations for participants to experience today’s technology in a hands-on, interactive environment. Participants heard from innovation experts in their fields!

Our guests learned about the high-paying manufacturing careers available, and discovered how manufacturing remains the economic powerhouse behind our local, regional and national economies.

In this session, speakers uncovered 10 things participants can do to start moving toward their career and personal goals – even if they are unsure what they may be!

Engineering is Everywhere – You Can Be an Engineer! – 555 Students Presenter: Dr. Karinna Vernaza, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Business at Gannon University

In this session, participants explored the different engineering fields, their applications, and their thought processes. Examples of engineering products in everyday life were presented. Attendees walked away saying, “I can be an engineer!”

Jump-Start Your Career through Internships – 190 Students Facilitator: Melanie Ford, Assistant Teaching Professor at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College This dynamic panel consisting of Penn State Erie engineering interns and local employers discussed the steps recommended for finding a meaningful internship, what questions to ask a college and a potential employer, and what benefits they have experienced through participating in an internship.

Bringing Great Innovations to Life – 583 Students Presenter: Jessie Tymoczko, Inventionland Institute

Did you imagine that hovercrafts, autonomous vehicles or invisibility cloaks could exist in reality? Have you heard of artificial skin for robotic arms, lens free cameras, hybrid driving-flying robots, calorie scanners, or ear print technology? This session walked students through the process of bringing an idea to market and introduced a few new inventions that are new or coming soon to market.

Interviewing Skills… LIVE! Learn the Tips and Tricks for a Successful Interview – 452 Students Presenters: Eileen Mullen, Program Coordinator, Crawford Co. K-12 Career Education Alliance & Patrick Faller, Acutec Precision Aerospace

During this breakout session participants learned what questions Human Resource managers and company owners ask when interviewing prospective employees, why they are asking the specific questions, what information they are looking for, and how to identify the strengths, skills and attributes that will set job seekers apart from their competitors.

Imagine a Career with Robotics – 565 Students Presenters: Steve Catt, ARM Institute, and Vu Nguyen, Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy

Integrating robotics in manufacturing requires a more developed, diverse workforce to manage, design and build the future with all the technological advantages that robotics provides. This session showcased current applications of robotics in key manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, automotive and electronics. It also highlighted future skills necessary for success in an “Industry 4.0” manufacturing work environment.

Patrick R. Locco Scholarship Awards

The Manufacturer & Business Association is proud to support technical education and one of the most impactful ways is through the Patrick R. Locco Scholarship Awards. These awards were created with the sole purpose — to recognize outstanding high school students who distinguish themselves in the pursuit of both technical and academic excellence.

To even be considered for this prestigious honor, students must apply and be nominated by a teacher. Each school then narrows the nominees to their top candidates. If that’s not enough, these students are then interviewed by local businesspeople who ultimately choose the winners.

The 2018 Patrick R. Locco Scholarship Award winners each received a $1,200 scholarship.Corry Area High School: • Kurtis Martin – Kurtis plans on attending a technical school to study drafting. He plays football, is a member of the honors choir and serves as a leading member in his local church.

Crawford County Area Vocational-Technical School: • Christian Nichols – Christian plans on attending Penn State or Clarion University to study Business Management. He excels in academics and currently serves as a student member of the Occupational Advisory Committee.

Mercer County Career Center: • Devin Kerr - Devin plans on attending a technical school to explore a career in electronics. He is a member of his school’s Track Team and also participates in the Academic Decathlon.

Erie County Technical School: • Andrew Sebald – Andrew plans on attending the Porreco College of Edinboro University to become an electrical lineman. He is also a volunteer fireman at Fairview Fire Department #52.

Erie High School: This year, thanks to the generous friends and family of the late Al Mele of Mele Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, we have received enough donations to extend not one, but two scholarships to Erie High School students this year. • Nicholas Panochko – Nicholas plans on attending Gannon or Penn State for electrical engineering. He currently works two jobs and enjoys playing baseball and participates in the youth group at his church. • Abdulla Iznorov – Abdulla also plans on attending Gannon or Penn State and is interested in pursuing computer programming. He is a member of the varsity boys’ tennis team and the pre-engineering robotics team.
