Old St. Marys, now in its 186 th year of faith and service to Gods people, and served by the Holy Ghost Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all! We are so happy to be gathered here worshiping God. Each October, our Church throughout the nation celebrates Respect Lifemonth. Our faith commitment to the dignity of life includes the protection of the unborn and dying, opposing the death penalty, caring for victims of violence at home and of war abroad and defining the sanctity of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Let us be mindful of Gods divine order and call upon the Holy Spirit to guide us as we continue to work and pray for the protection of ALL life from the moment of conception until last natural breath. This years Catholic Services Appeal has begun! You should have received your 2020 CSA information from the Archdiocese of Detroit. Please, prayerfully consider making a one-time or recurring gift to help continue this mission and to help each parish, family, and individual throughout the Archdiocese bring the hope of Jesus and His message to Southeast Michigan and beyond. Our CSA target is $35,270. Visit www.givecsa.org for more information. Today, in St. Matthews Gospel, the evangelist recounts Jesustelling of a parable to the chief priests and elders. A landowner (God) plants a vineyard, leases it out, then goes on a journey. When vintage time draws near, He twice sends His servants for the produce. Christ describes how the tenants (the Israelites) reject the servants (Gods prophets) and even kill the landowners son (Jesus, symbolizing His dying for our sins). Our Lord and Savior becomes the cornerstone the builders reject. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, a vineyard that yields bad grapes is related to Israels sinfulness. • Old St. Mary’s, now in its 186th year of faith and service to God’s people, and served by the Holy Ghost Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all! We are so happy to be gathered here worshiping God.

Each October, our Church throughout the nation celebrates “Respect Life” month. Our faith commitment to the dignity of life includes the protection of the unborn and dying, opposing the death penalty, caring for victims of violence at home and of war abroad and defining the sanctity of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Let us be mindful of God’s divine order and call upon the Holy Spirit to guide us as we continue to work and pray for the protection of ALL life from the moment of conception until last natural breath. This year’s Catholic Services Appeal has begun!

Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist recounts Jesus’ telling of a parable to the chief priests and elders. A landowner (God) plants a vineyard, leases it out, then goes on a journey. When vintage time draws near, He twice sends His servants for the produce. Christ describes how the tenants (the Israelites) reject the servants (God’s prophets) and even kill the landowner’s son (Jesus, symbolizing His dying for our sins). Our Lord and Savior becomes the cornerstone the builders reject. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, a vineyard that yields bad grapes is related to Israel’s sinfulness. God’s Kingdom will be given to those who produce abundant fruit. As Paschal stewards strengthened by the Eucharist, we strive to produce good fruit in our lives — good works through acts of Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at Old St. Mary’s on the first Wednesday of the month. The next Anointing of the Sick will be THIS Wednesday, October 7th at 12:45 p.m.

Election Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, You told us to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Enlighten the minds of our people in America. May we choose a President of the United States, and other government officials, according to Your Divine Will. Give our citizens the courage to choose leaders of our nation who respect the sanctity of unborn human life, the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of marital relations, the sanctity of the family, and the sanctity of the aging. Grant us the wisdom to give You, what belongs to You, our God. If we do this, as a nation, we are confident You will give us an abundance of Your blessings through our elected leaders. Amen.

Meet Our Extended Family St. Francis of Assisi (Feast Day September 4)

Francis was born into a wealthy merchant family, served as a soldier, and was a prisoner of war. He left this life behind when he heard God call him to “rebuild his Church.” Francis was never a priest, though he was later ordained a deacon. Francis preached about returning to God and obedience to the Church. Slowly companions came to Francis, people who wanted to follow his life of sleeping in the open, begging for garbage to eat ... and loving God. He eventually founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis, and the Custody of the Holy Land. His love of nature helped him see all God's creations as part of his brotherhood. He later became associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment, and it became customary for Catholic churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day.

Prayer of St. Francis Lord make me an instrument of your peace

Where there is hatred let me sow love Where there is injury, pardon

Where there is doubt, faith Where there is despair, hope

Where there is darkness, light And where there is sadness, joy O divine master grant that I may

not so much seek to be consoled as to console to be understood as to understand

To be loved as to love For it is in giving that we receive

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life Amen.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a program designed for adults who are interested in discovering, developing and nurturing their faith as members of the Roman Catholic Church. The program welcomes adults who are not baptized, those baptized in another Christian faith as well as Roman Catholics who have never received the sacraments of Holy Eucharist or Confirmation. We also invite those who simply seek to deepen their love and understanding of Christ Jesus to join us. RCIA and children’s catechism will start in October. Please watch the bulletin for updates.

The Story of Our Lady of the Rosary Saint Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716.

The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light to this devotion.
