✠ THE CALENDAR ✠ BISHOP’S CORNER

The strong winds at the beginning of theweek blew in a brief, refreshing relief from ourSummer drought, but now it feels like Winter as Iwrite this. We’ve just had a sugary sweetHalloween lunch for the little ones (one or twolarger goblins got in on it) this Saints Simon and Jude Day.(Thanks, Katie!) Now we can look forward to St. Martin’sSummer, a few final days of sun before Winter. But today we’regetting a taste of weather in store for us, and it’s not sweet.

Another party took place on Sunday, again for adults andchildren, and All Saints. At St. Gertrude we try to observe all ofour special days not only by prayer, but also by a party. This isvery Catholic, in addition to being lots of fun. How wonderfulis the fullness of Catholic life. Our thanks to all who are helpingthis season of All Saints and Souls.

Our handsome goldfish, Jim and Ollie (there may be ananonymous third) are looking prosperous and well fed as they gointo Winter. They are probably the quietest creatures at St.Gertrude, and their discretion gives us all a good example. It isremarkable to consider how they survive the long cold Wintersin their little pond.

Our thanks to God for the rain, and all of His rich blessingsand mercies bestowed upon us. We will have a perfectopportunity to thank Him in the next celebration at our church:Forty Hours, November 19-21. Our All Night Adoration forNovember begins after the opening Mass that Friday evening.

Take advantage of these last days of borrowed light to hearsome of the late afternoon Masses this week. Then, remember toreset your clock on Saturday evening as we enter the darkness.

May Christ be your light these days of grace, and light andpeace for our Poor Souls.

God bless you,–Bishop Dolan

Most afflicted of Virgins, Mary,Mother of Jesus, hear my prayer. Bythe agonizing Heart of Jesus, Ientreat thee to take pity on the soulsof thy departed handmaids, offerfor them to the Eternal Father, thysufferings and those of thy DivineSon, that they may be safelyconducted to the realms of peace, where in company with the saints, they may cast their crowns beforethe throne and the Lamb, and joinin the everlasting Alleluia of theBlessed. O Eternal Father, for thesake of the Most Precious Blood thatflowed from the Heart of Jesus uponthe Cross, and the bitter sorrow ofMary, grant them eternal rest.Amen.

Please remember the soul of NadineHenry, whose first anniversary ofdeath was October 10th, as well as allof our loved ones who have died.

Hallow Halloween and the WholeMonth of November.

Visit the graves of your loved ones. This applies more to All Souls’ Day(Nov. 2nd) than it does to All Saints’Day (Nov 1st). Still the point is toremember our loved ones and to pray forthose who have died marked with thesign of faith. Death is not the last word.Christ has overcome death by His ownsorrowful passion and death through theresurrection. That is the source of ourhope and strength of all the saints.

An indulgence is granted the Christian faithfulwho devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even ifonly mentally, for the dead. This indulgence isapplicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Thisindulgence is a plenary one from November 1through November 8 and can be gained oneach one of these days. On the other days of theyear this indulgence is a partial one of sevenyears.

• When passing a cemetery, pray theEternal rest prayer.

• Take a “prayer stroll” through yourlocal cemetery to pray for all thoseburied there. Bring holy water tosprinkle on the graves. (It is one of thefirst sacramentals of the Church. Holywater refreshes the holy souls.)

• Visit the graves of your loved ones andclean sites in a spirit of prayer andpenance.

• Around the graves of your loved ones, plant flowers to honor the final restingplace of a Temple of God.

Be Holy for Halloween, All month, and Always!

If you persevere in the love andgrace of God, you too shall be a saint. The whole point of “All Hallows” is toremind us to be “hallowed” or“sanctified”. Most of us won’t have ourown particular feast day and so AllSaints’ Day will be our feast day. It is thefeast day for most of the Church’s saints, those who lived peaceably, followedChrist, loved their families, accomplished their duties in life andpassed on to the next life. May theirprayers be with us.

Pray for the Poor Souls in November

• Double up on prayers and sacrificesfor departed loved ones and friendsduring this powerful season of the dead.Don’t waste your sufferings.

• Pray the Litany for the FaithfulDeparted.

• Pray the Office for the Dead.

• Pray the Rosary for the Holy Souls inPurgatory before the Blessed Sacrament.

• Enroll your family and friends, livingand deceased, in the Purgatorial Society,a spiritual solidarity of prayer.

• Visit cemeteries with your children.Teach youth to pray the Eternal RestPrayer. Sprinkle holy water on the gravesin the cemetery.

• Light blessed candles. The burningcandle is a sign of our prayer, a bright, silent intercessor for the holy souls.

• Light an Eight Day Votive Candle inchurch.

• Say the “Eternal Rest” Prayer on yourRosary Beads.

✠ ALL SAINTS’ DAY ✠ ANNOUNCEMENTS CONT:You! A Saint

All Saints’ Day reminds us that youalso can be a saint. It isn’t difficult, in factit is quite simple. Love God and serveHim. Surely it isn’t hard to love and serveGod, the God Who has done so much foryou; loved you from all eternity, gave youbeing, cares for you every moment of theday. The God Who created you forhappiness, an eternity of happiness.

Yes, we can all be saints. God wantsus to be saints. He wants us to be Hisfriends in this world and in Heaven.

The Blessed Virgin, the Apostles, St.John the Baptist, St. Francis Cabrini, wholived right here in America, St. Agnes, St.Martin of Tours, St. Elizabeth, St. MariaGoretti, and many, many more once wereboys and girls. They had mothers andfathers just as we have. They lived in thisworld. They played, laughed and criedjust as we do.

The Saints are our brothers andsisters, for the Communion of Saintsmakes of us all one family. The Saints areGod’s friends and ours. They will help uson our way to sanctity. We should readstories of their lives, for their holiness willinspire us to avoid sin and to imitatethem in holiness.

We, like the Saints, when assisting atHoly Mass, will be grateful for theopportunity of offering with the priestthe sacrifice of Calvary again renewed onour altars. We will long for HolyCommunion and will receive often, knowing that Jesus wants our souls to bewell fed and cared for.

We will become more holy, moreloving, more kind, and in this way we canbecome saints.

Don’t Forget Them

The suffering souls in Purgatory arestill on the way to Heaven; but theyhave arrived at the stage when theirsalvation is sure; there is no furtherdoubt or danger of not reachingHeaven.

This life is the time to win our placein Heaven. After death, all that is tohappen is what we earned in this life, whether joy or punishment or both. Sothe soul that dies in the love of God haswon a strict right to Heaven, a definiteplace in Heaven. But when a souldeparts this life in venial sin, there aretwo reasons for suffering: one, because ithas never repented venial sin; the other, because, after repenting and beingforgiven, the soul still owes a debt ofpunishment to atone for the sin.

It is easy to see that a soul in thisstate cannot enter Heaven. Silently theywait, begging us not to forget them. Weperform an act of charity if weremember the Poor Souls when we assistat Holy Mass.

We can remember these Poor Soulsin our morning offering. We can askGod to take the rewards that we maygain during the day and apply them forthe relief of the Holy Souls. In this waywe show our love of God and ourneighbor for in freeing these souls fromPurgatory, we open Heaven to themwhere they will adore, praise, and loveGod for all eternity.

“As long as you did it to one of thesemy least brethren, you did it to Me” –refers in a particular way to the souls inPurgatory.

CHRISTIAN FAITH

Every Christian is bound to believe that in oneGod there are three distinct Persons, perfectlyequal, of the same substance, and having thesame nature: the Father, Who proceeds from noone; the Son, Who is born of the Father beforeall ages; and the Holy Ghost, Who proceedseternally from the Father and the Son as fromone principle; and that the three Persons are allequally eternal, equal in wisdom and power, and are all three one and the same Lord, oneand the same God.
