TO: ILMEA District 1 2013 Jazz Festival Directors and Students

FROM: Glenn Williams, Jazz Coordinator

RE: Festival repertoire and preparation instructions

Dear 2013 ILMEA District 1 Jazz Festival participant:

On behalf of the directors of District 1, I extend to you my heartfelt congratulations for being

accepted into this festival. Our district is one of the most sonically competitive districts in

Illinois. The preparation, performance proficiency and musicianship that have led you to this

event are impressive – congratulations!

In this packet you will find information and performance repertoire pertaining to the festival on

Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Tinley Park High School. In the coming days, your

director will receive an information packet from the host school that will provide greater

specificity regarding festival day logistics and procedures. For right now, your most important

job is to prepare the music to the best of your ability. The rehearsal time on the festival day is

SHORT. Knowing your parts before you enter the building will allow our guest conductors to

work on things of ensemble and musicianship. In short, start practicing RIGHT NOW and be

able to play every note and rhythm on the page before you enter the building on the festival day.

If you have any questions or concerns about the festival, please contact your director first. If

your director can’t answer your query, you can contact me anytime at [email protected]. If

I don’t know the answer to your question, I’ll research and respond promptly.

Once again, congratulations for earning this honor. I look forward to hearing and meeting each

of you on the day of the festival.

Musically yours,

Glenn Williams

ILMEA District I - Jazz Coordinator

ENSEMBLE REPERTOIRE AND PERSONNEL LISTS

Ensemble repertoire and personnel lists are included in this packet for your edification. Work

now to acquire recordings of the pieces your ensemble is performing. Take a moment to read

and research about your guest conductor. Make an effort to learn the names of other student

musicians in your section and in your ensemble. All of these things will work to make the band

sound better at the conclusion of the festival.

PIANOS

Pianos will be provided in every rehearsal and performance space. If you choose to bring your

own equipment, please let me know prior to the week of the festival at [email protected].

AMPS/VIBES/DRUM SETS

Every bassist and guitarist must bring their own amplifier. During the course of the day, you

will move rooms for sound checks and rehearsals. Bring something simple and easy (like a

hand cart) to facilitate equipment moves.

The festival host does not provide vibraphones. Each vibraphonist needs to bring their own set

of vibes. Contact [email protected] with specific questions.

Every drum set player must bring their own equipment – the entire drum kit. This includes a

rug for the rehearsal and performance space. During the course of the day, you will move

rooms for sound checks and rehearsals. Bring something simple and easy (like a hand cart) to

facilitate equipment moves. If your ensemble has been assigned 2 set drummers, contact the

other member of your ensemble AHEAD OF THE FESTIVAL to determine which player will

bring the equipment to the festival.

MUSIC STANDS

Every musician needs to bring a folding music stand. The host site does not have enough

stands to make this work. Thanks in advance for taking care of this important detail.

MUSICAL ACCESSORIES

Every musician must bring everything they need for a successful performance. This includes,

but is not limited to: pencil, tuner, extra reeds, mouthpieces, sticks, mallets, cords and cables,

extension cords, mutes (as needed in music,) woodwind doubles (as needed in the music,)

flugelhorns for trumpets (as needed in the music.)
