    Diwali from a Sikh Perspective

Back in 2002, my 19 year old Canadian born cousin asked me over the Easter weekend if I knew the reason that Easter is celebrated. I popped back the ques-tion to him and told him that I would only answer his question if he tells me why we celebrated Diwali. He said, I know that a few people found their way to the forest with

the help of lights. I asked him if he was jok-ing but he was serious because thats exactly what he thought. I am sure he is not the only one and there must be many more who do not understand or do not re-ally care to understand the religious and even social significance be-hind this day which is much more than just lights.

Before I really dig into this article, I would like to tell you how Sikhs came about celebrat-ing Diwali. The main reason was the release of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Singh ji in 1619, from the captivity of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Jah-angir wanted the Guru to convert to Islam and on the gurus refusal to do so he imprisoned

him in the Gwalior fort. When people found out that Guru ji was being held captive at the fort, they would come to the fort and kiss the forts wall. Jahangir soon realized that he had imprisoned a very reli-gious man and decided to free him. However, Guru ji said that he would only go if all the other 52 prisoners (kings and princes) being held by him would be released as well. Guru ji was informed that such a freedom would only be granted to who so ever could hold on to the trail of his robe as he left. For this purpose, guru ji had a special robe sown with 52 tassels. Therefore, everyone was freed from the emperors captivity as each prisoner held on to one tassel and walked out with him. On Diwali, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji arrived in Amritsar at the Golden temple and people lit oil lamps to rejoice the gurus return. The Sikhs call this day bandi chor - the day of liberation. Apart from this in 1577, the founda-tion for the golden temple was also laid on this day.

When I celebrated Diwali as a child, all I cared for was the fire crackers, time off from school and lots of good food. The school and my parents of course taught me about the religious significance behind this festival. However, the real significance came to my mind over the years. I hope this article not only provides knowl-edge about the religious significance of Diwali but also the social value that this festival abides by.

What was the Gurus message when he requested that all the prisoners be freed? Clearly such a request could have jeopardized his own freedom and even his life. The message of the

Guru was clear; it was the victory of good over evil and liberation from negativity. What we must be think-ing now is how to apply the Gurus message into our own lives. We call ourselves Sikhs the disciples of the Guru. Isnt disciple the one who follows the teachings of the Guru? We must question whether many of us today are our own prisoners. We imprison ourselves in so many nega-tive thoughts and that we must think of others befo before we think of our own benefits does not even come to us. Guru jis message reflects the importance of compassion and to extend our hand to those who are in need.

Sikhs and Hindus across the globe will be celebrating Diwali on Nov 26 as they do each year. Some only care for fun and some pray. How many of us actually go to the extent of questioning ourselves if we apply our Gurus principles in our life? The festival of Diwali is the expression of hope, happiness, and empathy. If we free our mind from evil, the guru will lead us out into a world of joy and enlightenment. We have come far from our land and country and it is good that we also brought with us our festivals which helps to spread the essence of our culture to the cor-ners that it has never reached before. However, this puts more pressure on us to teach not only our children but also ourselves the importance of forgiveness, kindness, benevolence and humility.

GURU NANAKS PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCEAbbotsford Khalsa Diwan Society Gurdwara, Abbotsford, BC - November 5 & 6, 2011

Institute for Understanding Sikhism (IUS) in collaboration of Khalsa Diwan Society, Abbotsford, BC and the Centre for Indo Canadian Stud-ies, University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC is holding a seminar on GURU NANAKS PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE on November 5 & 6, 2011 on the eve of Centennial Celebration of Ab-botsford Gurdwara The National Heritage of Canada. This conference is the first of its kind to initiate interest among Sikh theologians and researchers that there is a great need to look into the philosophy of Guru Nanak, the Founder of SIKHI (Sikhism), from scientific point of view. The philosophy of Guru Nanak embodied in his Bani is still being repre-sented by theologians having no knowledge of science so far. Although recently some theologians having even no knowledge of Science and some scientists who have some knowledge of theology have started to in-terpret Gurbani with application of Science and logic but satisfactory interpretation of Gurbani is still awaited. The Institute for understanding Sikhism started to work on these lines since 1999 but it is facing the problem of finance to put together the intellect of highly qualified Sikh scholars on this project. However, the IUS has produced following three books on sci-entific and logical interpretation of Gurbani:

    1. JAP: The Essence of Nanakian Philosophy

    2. Sabd Guru to Granth Guru3. Nanakian Philosophy: Basics for Human-ity.These books are available from the IUS and Singh Brothers, Amritsar. These books will be displayed at the time of seminar. The IUS is putting an emphasis on under-standing the philosophy of Guru Nanak since SIKHI is based on his philosophy which has been further strengthened by the Sikh Gurus who succeeded to the House of Nanak. We will look into the scientific and logical ideol-ogy of Guru Nanak. During the Period of Renaissance (between 14th and 16th century) scientists started challenging certain concepts of religion in Europe. Meanwhile Guru Nanak (1469-1539) during the same Period of Renaissance was challenging these religious concepts by observing the laws of Nature, which was later called Natural Philosophy, and the use of Logic in the South Asia. Unfortunately soon after the Gurus period the Bani of Guru Nanak started to be represented by the use of Vedic and Vedantic philosophies rather than use of Science and logic. Although a lot of work has been done on the translation and interpretation of the Aad Guru Granth Sahib (AGGS) into Punjabi, English and lately into French, Spanish and German, however, no attempt has been made to look into Gurbani from a scientific and logical point of view for more than 400

years since its compilation in 1604. The Institute for Understanding Sikhism (IUS) is consistently busy in this mission since 1999. Besides, there is also some work by isolated researchers but many of them have no background of Science or any allied fields. In spite of this fact, there is a great need to make humanity aware of this modern religion (SIKHI/Sikhism) founded by Guru Nanak in its real perspective by interpreting Gurbani scientifically and logically.

The above conference is being held in continuation of Celebration of Centenary of Abbotsford gGur Sikh Gurdwara - The National Heritage of Canada. Everybody is invited to attend this informative conference on the Philosophy of Guru Nanak and Sci-ence the first conference of its Kind. The invited theologians and research scholars will be discussing various aspects of Guru Nanaks philosophy from scientific and logi-cal point of views. Common Sense Decisions Needed on Council By Mark Rushton

I want to thank good friend and Patrika pub l i she r Andy Sidhu for offering me this opportunity to write a column in this newspaper, as I have done for many years in the Ab-botsford News. For those of you who dont know me, I have spent 25 years in the newspaper business, and 18 years in provincial political communications working directly with MLAs and cabinet ministers such as our own Michael de Jong and Surrey MLA Dave S. Hayer. In fact, I have attended a great many Indo Canadian festivals and events with Michael de Jong over the years, and have been in all three gurdwaras. Back in the 1970s, as editor of the Abbotsford News, I toured the historic Gur Sikh Gur-dwara a number of times when it was the only Sikh temple in Abbotsford.

But while I have many friends within the Indo Ca-nadian community, includ-ing family members of the original Sikh pioneers in Abbotsford and remember well my old friend Sabu Singh who took me to events all over the Lower Mainland, I am not writing so much to reminisce as I am to explain who I am, and how valuable I believe the Indo Canadian com-munity is to our society, to British Columbia and to our city. It is important that you get to know me because I am running for election as councillor for the City of Abbotsford on November 19.I decided to place my name on the ballot because I be-lieve major changes need to occur for this city to grow, and your families to prosper in the future.Taxation must be brought under control, and by-laws must reflect what is

best for the citys future. For instance council just brought in a tree bylaw that prohibits the cutting of trees in any area other than on properties within the ALR. This means that all Abbotsfords current and future development areas are restricted green space. I ask, how can you build homes, streets, schools, churches when you cant cut down a tree, or can cut it down only if you pay hundreds of dollars for each tree to the city. They are your trees! Also I believe the city has no right to tell you where to build your house on your property, or how big it should be. We all worked very hard to buy our land, build our homes and raise our families. We cannot let government take away those rights. Growth increases the tax base, and as such reduces the tax demands levied on current taxpayers.

If I am elected, I will make sure these bylaws are changed, or not enacted, so that your property rights are protected.I also have many concerns about the lack of future planning, such as the fact that at the new shopping centre being built at Mt. Lehman Road and the free-way, most customer traf-fic will have to be routed through residential neigh-bourhoods such as those

on Blueridge and Town-line Hill because council neglected to have land set aside for another freeway overpass at Mt. Lehman Road! We are now stuck forever with only three lanes crossing the freeway. However I will go into that issue, and many others in future columns. Thanks for reading, and please vote for common sense on council.

New Natural Turf Cricket Pitch at Exhibition Park

Abbotsford Exhibition Park will soon be hosting inter-national cricket tournaments thanks to the new natural turf cricket pitch, announced Mayor George W. Peary.

Work began on October 13, 2011 with the removal of the old artificial turf pitch and replacing it with a natural turf square with four pitches.

Once the wicket receives accredi-tation by the International Cricket Council, Abbotsford can look for-ward to hosting the first international Cricket matches outside of the To-ronto area.

We are very excited to be able to host international cricket matches in the City of Abbotsford, said Mayor George W. Peary. Cricket is grow-ing in popularity in our community.

Residents from throughout the Fraser Valley will be able to enjoy playing and watching this high-level interna-tional sport at our premier sporting venue.

The local contractor was Heidelberg Landscaping Ltd. Sponsors of this project include the City of Abbots-ford, Western Economic Diversifica-tion, RBC and Cricket Canada.

MINISTER OF FINANCE ANNOUNCES UPDATED ECONOMIC GROWTH PROJECTIONS FROM LEADING

PRIVATE SECTOR ECONOMISTSThe Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Fi-nance, today released updated economic growth projections from leading private sector fore-casters after meeting with them to gather their views on economic prospects for the country. The projections will form the basis of the next Update of Economic and Fiscal Projections. As we all know, although our domestic economy remains strong, global economic growth has weakened in recent months, and this will affect us here in Canada, said Minister Flaherty. The ongoing situation in Europe and the uncertainty in the United States have con-tributed to weakening global growth since the June budget. The private sector forecasters I met with today believe that recent global economic headwinds will continue to limit growth in Canada through 2012, he said. Todays private sector economic forecast will form the basis of the annual Update of Economic and Fiscal Projections, which we will release in the weeks ahead.

The Department of Finance bases its eco-nomic forecast for budget-planning purposes on the average of private sector economic forecasts. This practice introduces an ele-ment of independence into the fiscal forecast and is supported by organizations such as the International Monetary Fund. The Department surveyed 15 leading private sector forecasters in mid-September.Private sector forecasters agreed that the average economic forecast from the survey was a reasonable planning base for the upcoming Update of Economic and Fiscal Projections. We have a plan to keep Canadians and Canadian businesses on the right track to succeed with the Next Phase of Canadas Economic Action Plan, said Minister Fla-herty, We need to stay the course with that plan to support jobs and economic growth. In doing so, our Government remains committed to balancing the budget in the medium term.

Three Abbotsford Kiwanis clubs present second instalment to Holmberg House!

As part of a 3 year, $18,000 commit-ment by the three Kiwanis clubs of Abbotsford, the presidents Roy Curry, (MSA club), Graham Taylor, (Abbotsford club) and Jim Callaghan, (Clearbrook club) presented the second of three $6,000 cheques to Marion Keys, AHS Capital Campaign Manager.

Debbie Lehmann, Executive Director of the Abbotsford Hospice Society comment-ed, We gratefully acknowl-edge this contribution from a well established service organization in our com-munity. This type of grass roots support has helped to form the foundation of our capital campaign.

This year the Abbotsford Hospice Society celebrates

25 years of providing front-line support services to the dying and the bereaved. In 2010 the Society launched a capital campaign to build the first adult hospice residence in Abbotsford. The new hos-pice residence named Holm-berg House will be designed to provide holistic patient care in a non-institutional setting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to people as young as 19 years of age. On any journey there are so many that work together to achieve a vision and the campaign continues with 2.5 million dollars still needed to reach the 7.5 million dol-lar goal.

Kiwanis is a global organi-zation of volunteers dedicat-ed to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The three Kiwanis clubs in Abbotsford the

MSA Kiwanis, the Clear-brook club, and the Abbots-ford Kiwanis have joined together to contribute to the 3 year capital campaign of AHS. All community spir-ited citizens are welcome to visit or join any of these clubs in Abbotsford. Please go to www.pnwkiwanis.org to get club details. The MSA club meets every Wednes-day from 10 am to 11 am at the Sports Legacy building, the Clearbrook club meets Wednesdays 12 noon to 1 pm at the Crossroads Res-taurant on Sumas Way and the Abbotsford club meets every Thursday at 6pm at the Crossroads Restaurant. Please call Lloyd Hopper at 604-853-5157 or Graham Taylor at 604-859-7603 for information on all three clubs.

BC Blueberry Growers AssociationThe Mission of our Association is to, Create a platform where all farmers can

express and discuss their concerns. Create better working relationships with

BC Blueberry Council, government bod-ies, suppliers, berry processers and human resources.

Lobby its interests with local and federal government.

Work on cost reduction programs for all farmers

Provide benefits to its members through its services by overcoming Industry wide chal-lenges.

As you are aware, due to many issues, our lo-cal strawberry industry is almost finished and raspberries are going the same direction. There is close to 20,000 acres of blueberry plantations producing close to 80 million tons that is at risk.

Main issues that we are facing right now are High costs - Chemical and fertilizers. - Interest rates for farmers. - Higher wage costs.(Picking cost) New disease risk and control measures. Business risk management. Lack of or not enough marketing. Poor compensation to growers from processers.

The above Issues are creating problems for BC growers to compete in the market.

Our association will bring the growers on a single platform and sort out the issues relating to the survival of the industry over the next few months. We are working closely with the BC Blueberry Council to keep our efforts aligned for the survival of the industry in these tough times.

A large number of blueberry farmers of the Fraser Valley got together and deceided to form their own Blueberry Growers Association

The choice of books for students at Abbotsford Middle School to read is increasing significantly with the an-nouncement the school is the recipient of a grant worth $100,000 in books and resources from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. A total of 20 schools across Canada are receiv-

ing an award this year (four in BC), from 165 submissions. This will inspire our students to read; it will help with student comprehension and reading said school literacy committee member and teacher Kelly Grant. It will truly transform

our library and literacy program at Abbots-ford Middle. Abbotsford Middles literacy committee along with Central Abbotsford Community School personnel spent well over 100 hours of after-school hours developing the grant application and received the good news this summer.

Abbotsford Middle receives $100,000 Love of Reading grantThis is the first time any school in Abbotsford School District has received this grant in the programs seven year history noted Board of Education Chair Cindy Schafer, adding we are very grateful to the Indigo Love of Read-ing Foundation. The love of reading is such a vital cornerstone of growth, knowledge and understanding for every student, every person. The Board of Education is thrilled to partner in promoting the love of reading. She noted it will increase the opportunity students here (Abbotsford Middle) have to expand their ho-rizons through the wonderful world of books. This program was initiated by Indigo CEO Heather Reisman, who was inspired by teach-ers struggling to teach learning and build lit-eracy skills despite a lack of books recounted local Coles store representative Delores Dhlushak. Since the program started in 2004, Indigo has raised $9 million to help a total of 90 elementary and middle schools across Canada. We encourage students to keep reading! On behalf of parents, school PAC President Lisa Medynski gave thanks to Indigo for this investment in our students. It will benefit and increase learning opportunities, engage them, and keep them learning through middle school years. The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation aims to improve early childhood literacy and oppor-tunities for students in schools like Abbotsford Middle. Through a combination of funds pro-vided by Indigo customers and employees, $1.5 million is generated annually and distributed through the grants to elementary and middle schools across the country.

Local Candidates Need to Address Intercultural Barriers.

When people write or stop me on the street to share issues regarding diversity in our community, theyre not telling me anything new that I havent already discussed. I can distinguish the haters from the people who have genuine concerns. Like Ive said in the past, we all can do better and we all have the respon-sibility to be welcoming to one another regardless to our ethnicity. I have to ask the people who constantly complain and take shots at those in the community trying to make a difference regarding diversity, what are you doing to make a difference?

We are currently in election season and I have not yet heard any of the local can-didates addressing issues regarding inter-cultural barriers. This issue is as equally important as the taxation and P3 water discussions. I read one candidates profile in Mission say that we need diverse lead-ership on council to reflect our diversity. Fair enough. We want to promote cultural diversity, but at the same time we need to also understand that there is a growing separation. Theres nothing wrong with candidates addressing these issues, actu-ally its imperative. However, the term diversity should not be hijacked to suit ones political aspirations in running for council. Cultural diversity needs leader-ship if were going to continue to promote

this as an important symbol. I encourage candidates in the following weeks ahead, to familiarize themselves with some of the issues on intercultural barriers. In order to see progress, we need to be real and honest in our intentions. If we dont address these issues now or in the decades to come, were going to encounter distinc-tive barriers. This is a perfect opportunity for all candidates, including South Asians running for public office this November to bring this issue to the forefront.

I hear several comments being made that the reason diversity isnt working, is due to the fact that the South Asian community are segregating themselves. There is some truth to this and I have addressed this point from time to time. But, it also goes further than this. Its a multidimensional issue and there are many factors that co-exist with one another. Its not just one specific ethnic communitys responsibility.

What Ive learned is the success and longevity of cultural diversity depends on the strengths of our partnerships. An example of this took place recently when a working accord was signed between the Fraser Valley Indo Canadian Business As-sociation and the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.

This week, I received and invitation to a local fundraising event being hosted by

Ken Herar can be reached at [email protected] or view his blog
