Dear Motor Medics,My check engine light has been illuminated on my car for almost a year. When

it first came on I was alarmed so I had my mechanic check it out, they said it wasdue to a failed catalytic convertor and that it would be expensive to fix but since itwould not harm the engine I could keep driving it that way and ignore the light.After about six months the engine started to run rough so I went back and theytold me I now had several other codes that needed immediate repair otherwisesevere engine damage could occur. I don’t want to spend the money on a conver-tor but how can I tell if something is failing if the light is already on for somethingelse? My car is a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix with 75k miles.

Dear Ellen,You can’t tell if the light is already on. You need to repair the issue with the convertor

in addition to the other system as well. I know many shops tell their customers a failedconvertor won’t hurt the engine so you can drive it but there are always side effects. Inthis case you can’t tell what other problems may be in the system. This car may still becovered by an eight year 80k mile federal emissions warranty that may cover the conver-tor. Check with a GM dealership to see if this is so.

Dear Motor Medics,I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado with an in-dash cd player and for about a year

the cds have not been ejecting well. Now I have three stuck in the unit and onebelongs to the library. The others I basically store in the unit to save space in theconsole. Is there any way I can remove them myself? I have tried to use a screw-driver to open the door but can’t see much inside the unit.

Dear Tom,Stop! Don’t ever try to use anything to pull a cd from an in-dash unit. These units are

extremely delicate and doing so can damage the unit. Even the act of pushing a cd intothe unit instead of letting the unit pull it in slowly by itself can damage the delicate mech-anism. The unit may have failed just because it is aging but it may also be due to the cdsused in the unit. An in-dash changer like yours is even more sensitive to cd quality thansingle disc players and it is extremely important to only use cds that are perfectly flatwithout any kind of stick-on labels; anything else is prone to getting stuck. A radio repairshop may be able to remove the disc then fix the unit but the cost often exceeds theprice of a similar replacement. You may want to check with the library for the cost of areplacement CD.

Dear Motor Medics,My vehicles heater has been losing its ability

to heat gradually over the past few years and ithas reached the point of almost no heat and mywife says it’s time to get it fixed or else. She’ssteamed and I’m freezing. I had it flushed a cou-ple times and it seemed to work better for ashort time but when I had it done this year itmade no difference. The vehicle is a 2001 DodgeCaravan. Can you help me cool down my wifeand heat up the van?

Dear Terry,Your problem is most common when the cooling

system has not been flushed according to scheduledservice times, but if it has been they may have notserviced the core. When we flush a cooling systemwe flush everything, not just the radiator. We removethe hoses to the core and rinse them with cleanwater and then connect our machine and completelyflush the system. We also use a cleaner in the sys-tem before we flush it. These simple things canmean the difference between a heater core thatgoes the distance or one that fails prematurely. If youcore has become so clogged that it can’t be flushedenough to give proper heat then it will need to bereplaced. Replacement can be very expensive so if itis determined that a new core is needed checkaround for prices.


Dear Motor Medics,I’m mad at my mechanic. I had my vehicle in

for an engine replacement and it took a weeklonger than promised and after five days itdeveloped an oil leak. I have a warranty and theydid reimburse me for some rental car chargesbut have not gone back for repairs because I’mso frustrated with the problems. My wife says Ishould have them fix it since we paid the money.Then go elsewhere. What should we do?

Dear Darrel,I don’t know what business you’re in but it must

be one where there are never any problems or yourcustomers just don’t care about them. I can tell youthat any business has a main objective of keepinghappy customers. We don’t always hit our mark inour shop but we try and we make it right no matterwhat. Often a major job has unforeseen parts needsthat can take an extra week or more. It ’s justunavoidable in rare cases. They did reimburse youfor rental charges and that was not required. As forthe leak I’m sure they don’t like it any more than youand it was not there when it left their shop. It’s thenature of mechanical things. If this shop knows yourvehicle well and is honest it’s smart for you to stickwith them. If you don’t go back they can’t help you.Call them.


Dear Motor Medics,I have a 2003 Chevy suburban with 200,000

miles on it but it runs and looks great! No real-ly…I’m serious. I want to know is about the tirepressure monitors and if I can reset them athome. The owner’s manual says I can. I servicethe vehicle regularly and they charge me forresetting the monitor every time I have the tiresrotated but the rotation is free with the oilchange.

Dear Myron,Tire pressure monitors on this vehicle can be

reset at home without special tools but not all vehi-cles are this way so you wil l have to spend themoney in some cases. To reset the monitors on thisvehicle is relatively simple. When the tires havechanged positions i.e. rotating, a relearn must bedone. Start by applying the parking brake, next turnthe key to the on position then turn the headlampswitch from off to park lamp three times within fiveseconds of key on and the horn will beep twice. Nowyou have to decrease the tire pressure starting withthe driver’s side front tire until the horn beeps. Moveto the passenger side front tire then the passengerrear tire and last the drivers rear tire. When you aredone with the last tire turn the key off and inflate thetires to the correct pressure. It gets easier once youhave done it once.
