- Co-Teaching in some classes to support ELL
MathChallenges
● ELL support and collaborative work in math classes
● Time to work together to solidify the vertical alignment of curriculum
● Time to write MYP units● Need teacher collaborative time built
into the school day for co-teachers● Helping students be school ready
(come to class on time, homework completion, time on task in class)
● Time to analyze, process and plan for skill review information gathered from IXL data
Action Steps● PD on SIOP and WIDA● Debrief and reflect on learning walks● Math data retreat ● Use data to identify 6th grade AE placement
within math● Use data to identify heterogeneous and
homogeneous groups within classes● Use time to differentiate within MYP units -
revise units to meet needs of all students (Example: Equitable resources for projects)
● Implement restorative practices for homework completion, desired behavior, tardiness, etc..
● Develop a plan for progress monitoring towards goals
● Math High 5 Strategy Campaign (Ex: CUBES)
Special EducationStrengths-Collaboration with general education teachers
-Push-in with special education services, reading, and math
-Pull-out for students that have the need for more individualized services
-Cross category programing within special education
-Increase time for Special Programing students in the general education setting
-Special Programing students given community based experiences
-Pre-referral is happening and improving in team meetings.
Challenges-Provide more push-in services -Community building throughout the school (integration of special education)
Action Steps-Progress monitor students, collect reading and math data in PDPLC’s.
-Increase the number of co-teaching periods for year.
ALL are CORE SUBJECTS● “Specialists” are now core content subjects
○ World Language (Language Acquisition) ○ Design○ Physical and Health Education○ Performance Arts which include Visual Arts and
Vocal and Instrumental Music
● All subjects use AVID strategies to support SIP Reading Goals
Example - World LanguagesStrengths
● French, Japanese, Spanish● Offered as a core subject● Anthony has an increase in enrollment in World Languages
after becoming a certified MYP school.● 6th Graders provided with the opportunity to sample all three
languages, then choose one to continue in 7th grade - provides greater opportunity for access and choice.
● Multiple levels are offered to meet the needs of all students.● Students engage in reading strategies in the second language,
such as story mapping, sequencing, and inferencing. These strategies enhance students’ abilities to improve their literacy in English.
● Students leave Anthony Middle School ready for success in High School language courses.
● Students are better prepared for rigorous IB Diploma exams in World Language during High School.
ChallengesStudents are sometimes placed in a language class that they did not choose due to lack of space
Multi-level proficiencies in a single classroom
Students who have lower-level reading proficiencies in English face a big challenge to read in a second language
Action StepsOffering 6th graders the chance to sample a language before making a commitment
Providing additional levels of World Language classes (ex. Advanced Spanish, Intro classes for 7th and 8th graders)
Use SIOP strategies in conjunction with AVID reading strategies
