Local law-makers seek to gather assistance for colleagues in quake stricken provinces

Mr. Franklin Robedizo, Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Secretary here,

informed that the national organization of SP Secretaries is visiting their colleagues in Bohol and Cebu who were victims of the recent 7.2 earthquake. Before that he said, they will be soliciting financial aid and other support from their fellow SP secretaries nationwide, so that they will have something to share when they see them soon. He added that, the mutual help goes to whoever member of their organization who is faced with distressing conditions. Sangguniang Bayan(SB) Secretaries, Sangguniang Panglunsod(SP) and Sangguniang Panlalawigan(SP) are those members of the national organization of SPs, he added. Robedizo, who is the Vice-President for Visayas SP Secretaries likewise informed media over Radyo ng Bayan DYES that they will soon go on an educational tour. According to him, the entire Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the province, with Vice Governor Dindo Picardal, is visiting and observing one of the “paperless sessions” of Tacloban SP. He said that it is now becoming a trend

to hold this kind of session because it is cheaper, having no need to involve big volumes of office supplies. “However, meanwhile that the provincial LGU is still beset with financial constrains, each board member will have to bring and use his/her personal computer until the LGU is capable to procure the electronic communication equipment”, Robedizo said. This is still much cheaper than the old traditional manner of holding SP sessions, he said, because with the modern electronic ways, there is a lot of time and effort saved. Next to the education tour, an outdoor session has likewise been set for the whole Provincial Board, to deliberate on the proposed P800M plus 2014 Annual Budget. Robedizo however stressed that no funds had been shelled out from the SP Budget for the two aforesaid outdoor activities. Instead, each Board Member’s travel funds would be the ones charged to, for each of their travel. And, whether or not each of their secretary is joining them in the proposed official travels, is already dependent on the BM’s discretion. (PIA-Eastern Samar)

Free seaweeds available to seaweed farmers

BY: AURORA J. CASIMPAN

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Eastern Visayas is

giving free seaweeds to seaweed farmers who incurred losses as a result of their ruined seaweed farms due to typhoons and other calamities. The giving of free seaweeds is expected to help the farmers regain losses caused by calamities. Mary Prose Cag-ong, BFAR laboratory staff announced the BFAR plan and said farmers can request for the free seaweeds through its Laboratory Division or seed bank. She informed farmers can

request for an unlimited amount and that the seed bank has about 900 seaweeds to be availed. Presently, seaweed farmers from Basey and Guiuan towns in Eastern Samar and some parts of Leyte have requested for free seaweeds from their seed bank. BFAR is undertaking the provision of free seaweeds as part of its programs and projects in its continuing support and protection of the seaweed industry considered as one of the contributors to the country’s economy. DTI Leyte heightens campaign vs defective Christmas lightsThe Department of Trade and Industry

in the province of Leyte has been on heightened campaign against business establishments selling defective Christmas lights in order to prevent accidents and risks to lives and properties.DTI Leyte Director Desiderio Belas, Jr., has been urging the buying public to check Christmas lights to ensure that said items carry the Product Standards (PS) or International Compliance Certificate (ICC) markings on their label. Director Belas said their department is intensifying their campaign

against Christmas items zeroing in on defective Christmas lights and decors. Belas is encouraging the consumers to be more vigilant as the Department intensifies the monitoring of Christmas lights and decorations. “We have started monitoring the stores as early as September but our monitoring will be more intensified by November onwards as this is the time when Christmas decorations are in high demand,” Director Belas said. Belas disclosed that DTI inspectors do not solely focus on the

International Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers but also on other aspects of the goods that will ensure their quality. Christmas lights that are imported should bear an ICC sticker, likewise, locally made must bear PH sticker, Belas also stressed. He also revealed the genuine feature of ICC stickers. Once they notice the ICC mark on products, they must see if it bears numbers and those numbers should correspond with the registration certificate issued by the DTI. If the ICC mark does not bear numbers then it is not genuine, he said. It was learned that customers choose to buy lights even if it lacks the necessary compliance labels because of the low price. “We need more partners from the private sector with heightened awareness and consciousness of consumer rights so they will be able to tell the business about possible violations,” Belas added. DTI is determined to make the buying public understand the necessity of choosing Christmas lights labeled with the proper markings rather than buy defective lights sold at low price but will be putting lives at risk. An official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)

in Eastern Visayas confirmed that the department will conduct an inspection of all public structures in the region to see if any of the structures suffered damage during the 7.2 tremor which hit the Visayas regions in October 15. Engr. Charlie Carlobos, DPWH engineer and team leader said that their office received report that two bridges in the region sustained damages during the quake which sow so much damage to some structures in some areas in Cebu

and Bohol provinces. He informed the two bridges in the region are Consuegra Bridge in Leyte,Leyte and Liloan Bridge in Liloan, Southern Leyte. The DPWH official said that they inspected the report and found the two bridges were “seen to have abnormal gaps” although the damages were minor. He said they would do immediate repair works to the bridges to ensure that the structures are safe to be used. The Consuegra Bridge which has a span of 20 meters and Liloan Bridge with a length of 100 meters are located

along the Maharlika Highway. The infrastructure department will particularly inspect old bridges to see if the bridges were able to withstand the quake. The office has not received report that old bridges in the region like the Bernard Reed Bridge in Palo, Leyte suffered damage due to the tremor. Structural engineers of the department will conduct the inspection of roads and bridges in the region starting next week to ensure the structures are all safe. (PIA-8)
