Protecting people and the health and safety of

our communities has never been more important.

As we navigate through these unprecedented

times we are reminded that regardless of

geography, every worker in every community

deserves to feel healthy and safe, every day.

This year’s Partners in Prevention Health and Safety

Fall Virtual Conference is about moving forward together.

The lessons learned over these past few months will

continue to resonate well into the future. The key,

however, will be to continue to work together to explore

opportunities and share information and best practices

that will set the path forward to future success.

Join us this October and together, we will move

forward to building strong, safe and resilient

communities across Ontario and beyond.

Kirby James President and CEO, K James Group/Unleashed

“Normal” is a MindsetIn less than a year, people have seen the world transform in ways that no one expected to witness in their lifetime. Yet this is not unprecedented. Time and again through history, humanity has faced such challenges. Did the world go back to “normal” after the plague, Black Death, Spanish flu or World Wars? No. The key issue is that the world will never be the same. Why? Because normal is a state of mind and is constantly changing.

We all want “normal” to come back. The reality is although certain parts of our previous lifestyles will return, many will not. So what now? It is important to learn the skill(s) to intentionally shift our mindset, to adapt how we think in a way that will create opportunities for all of us. When we do this, we are able to let go of the idea that “normal” is a place we can return to and we can move forward and help make the world a better place. When we choose to embrace our current, hopefully short lived situation, it becomes easier to adapt to current circumstances. As the world deals with and moves past COVID-19, we can prepare ourselves for the next challenge that may emerge; surely different than before.

This presentation explores what it takes to embrace adaptability ideas and how to practically change your relationship with the idea of “normal”. We will explore the benefits and real world examples of how successful individuals and businesses have made this a core strength.

Graham ShermanCo-Owner, Tool Shed Brewing Company

Unleashing Your Disruptive BehaviourThe concept of “Disruptive Marketing” has become so buzz-worthy that we often mistake simply being “innovative” with being disruptive. Truly standing out in a tough economy, against monster-sized competi-tion requires the use of part of our brains we don’t often access. In fact, we’ve been taught to suppress our disruptive behaviour since childhood – but now it’s time to harness those powers of disruption for the benefit of successes as entrepreneurs. Graham Sherman has been shaking things up since he worked on private-sector government and military contracts throughout Afghanistan, to when he began brewing beer and changing the game for small breweries across Alberta. Tool Shed Brewing Company’s unique approach to disrupting the market has led to it being nominated for Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year; being named as Calgary’s “Top 40 under 40” and the brewery’s position in the top five percent of breweries in North America. After hearing Graham’s story and insights, you’ll walk away incredibly inspired and with a clear path to unleashing your own disruptive behaviour to transform your business.

Closing Keynote Speaker 2:30 - 3:15 pm

Orlando BowenGame Changer and Motivational Speaker

New Beginnings Ten years ago, Orlando thought he was about to die. Pinned to the ground and enduring a savage beating, the then CFL linebacker had been jumped by two plainclothes police officers, an injustice which was the first of many laid against him at the hands of the police force. “In that moment, knowing my life was about to end, I’m thinking… I didn’t give everything I had to make a difference.” Later completely exonerated of any wrong doing, Orlando incredibly has publicly forgiven his perpetra-tors and has dedicated his life to inspiring others to pursue excellence in all they do. He spent five seasons in the CFL with the Argos and Hamilton Tiger Cats, before the concussion he suffered at the hands of the police forced him to quit the sport. Orlando is now the founder and Executive Director of One Voice One Team Youth Leadership, which empowers youth to utilize leadership skills and talents to better themselves and their community. He has been repeatedly recognized for his incredible work. He was bestowed with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 and was the national 2014 Harry Jerome Award winner for community service.

10:15 to 11:00 amUnderstanding the Financial Piece of the Safety Puzzle Jeet Tulshi, MBA, PMP, CRSP, Casualty Risk Control, Liberty Mutual Canada

Successful safety professionals know that talking “safety” to senior management rarely gets traction without explaining its true value. Being able to reframe safety in dollars and cents and assess its impact on the company’s bottom line gets senior management’s attention every time! Starting a new safety initiative, installing new safety controls or implementing a training program all require financial investment. Obtaining approval for any safety project cannot be done without preparing a solid business case and showing the financial benefits. Anyone who has direct or indirect responsibility for worker safety including safety professionals, human resources practitioners and employers will find this session extremely useful. In building a business case for safety, participants will learn: 1. To assess the impact of workplace injuries on a business’ profitability i.e. how much sales are needed to ‘recover’ the cost of injuries 2. To determine the correlation between a company’s loss history and cost of workers’ compensation insurance using a case study 3. The pros and cons of popular safety calculators that help to determine true cost of injuries and justify investments in safety programs.

Luck is Not a Strategy – Making Risk Assessments Effective in Your WorkplaceJeremy Shorthouse, Director, Health & Safety, Give & Go Prepared Foods Corp.Mike Wilson, P. Eng., CMSE®, FS Eng., CRSP, Machine Guarding Specialist, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS)

Many companies make decisions based on risk. It might be a four-letter word but understanding risk can improve your chances of success. Does your company understand the importance of conducting risk assessments? Do they understand how simple and powerful this process can be? Do you have the tools required? Do they know how to score risks? Do they understand how to put a positive spin on reducing risk? In this session, Mike and Jeremy will discuss why risk assessments are the most important part of your program, the Risk Assessment process (overall hazard, machine specific, dynamic, etc.)

from start to finish and a new way of looking at the scoring of risks vs. the traditional.

Coping with Loneliness and IsolationDr. Bill Howatt, President, Howatt HR Consulting and Chief of Research Productivity, Conference Board of Canada

There is nothing like a pandemic to challenge a society’s ability to feel socially connected. For many, coping with isolation and social distancing can be trying, as it is something many of us have never had to do before. It makes sense that it is difficult mainly because a core pillar for mental health is social connections. Social connections are influenced by our ability to connect with others, as well as the quality of these connections in our own homes, workplaces and communities. Isolation can be defined as a barrier that has a negative impact on our ability to perceive that we can be as socially connected with others as we want. There are many different steps that we can take to protect our psychological safety and in this webinar, Dr. Howatt will share some of his findings from research around perceived isolation barriers.

How Do You Measure Zero? The Challenge of Setting Zero as a GoalKirby James, President, K. James Group/Unleashed

In risk management, including Health & Safety, zero is the Holy Grail. Organizations create mission statements and place immense effort and resources into trying to achieve zero. That is fantastic – and comes with some unforeseen issues. The closer organizations get to really safe workplaces, the harder and harder it gets to measure how well you are doing. Explaining how things are progressing is even tougher. Then, worst of all, things seem to go from great to not so good at all. Join Kirby James, former CIH and Master Black Belt in Lean Sigma to understand the challenges of measuring rare events and more importantly what you can do and say that makes your achievements better understood.

You Are What You Eat...Literally Dr. Sandra Dorman, Professor, School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, Laurentian University and Director, Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH)

Food components are the building blocks of your body’s cells and therefore create an important line-of-defense against infections and common health conditions. Food has long been recognized as a contributor to, or prevention against, inflammatory diseases, like heart disease and type II diabetes. Concurrently, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is a novel human disease, which has been recognized to induce widespread systemic inflammation with adverse health effects, particularly in people with these existing inflammatory diseases. Significantly, COVID-19 is creating a watershed moment in history: people have and continue to make dramatic changes, many of which will persist into the future; this includes food behaviour changes. Forward-thinking people should take advantage of this opportunity to adapt changes that induce short and long-term benefits in health. This lecture will highlight the need for personal change to improve human health and how COVID-19 provides the opportunity to make this change and will also present the protective effects of key nutrients and how to include them in your diet.

Myths and Realities of 8 Hours of SleepClint Marquardt, Sleep & Fatigue Specialist, Sleep and Dreams

Do you really need 8 hours of sleep? What happens when you don’t obtain it? Why don’t we get 8 hours of sleep? What can you do when you don’t sleep for 8 hours? These are some of the questions Sleep & Fatigue Specialist, Clinton Marquardt, will answer during his presentation aimed at debunking some of the myths and clarifying the realities around sleep and fatigue. Clinton will also share tips on how you can optimize your sleep even if your stress and anxiety are at an all-time high and managing fatigue so you can live a happier, healthier and safer life.

The New Frontier in Safety Management Theo Heineman, CRSP, CHSC, B.Sc.Ag, President and CEO, 1Life Workplace Safety Solutions

Every year, organizations invest billions of dollars in new safety initiatives that fail to produce desired results. The primary reason is the inability to produce the sustained change required to have lasting impact on human behavior. True and lasting change requires becoming aware of and changing habits and beliefs stored mostly in the unconscious mind. Using the understanding of the neuroplasticity nature of the brain, a formula can be applied to allow employees to learn new ways to think, act and feel; in short, create a new mindset towards workplace safety. This session will introduce the new frontier in safety management; neuroscience, and how it can be applied to transform safety culture and performance.

Demographic, economic, and sociological forces, unprecedented technological advances, and even shifts in educational theory have all radically shaped how the 6 generations in the workplace view the world – and view work. Furthermore, our bodies and minds undergo changes throughout our lives that can impact health and safety in the workplace. In this session, we will discuss how and why these generations became who they are, as well as physical and cognitive factors to remain conscious of throughout life to build understanding and empathy for every generation, confront ageism, and learn why all the gaps we perceive as generational are the way they are.
