In the fall or spring, if you take antihistamines to combat seasonal allergies, you may find yourself with anannoying side effect: Dry mouth. But, it isn't just antihistamines that can cause dry mouth. Hundreds ofmedications can cause your mouth to feel dry including pills for blood pressure, pain, muscle relaxants, anxiety, depression and simple decongestants. Health conditions including diabetes, or treatments such ascancer radiation therapy can cause the condition as well.

Symptoms of dry mouth include a severely painful dry tongue, choking, sore throat, and hoarseness. It canchange the taste of food, cause bad breath, and can even affect teeth and gums.

You can get relief through prescription medications; however, some simply home care can also help:

▪ Use a humidifier at night

▪ Chew sugar-free gum

▪ Sip water frequently

▪ Avoid sugar, acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco

▪ Try switching out medications with your doctor's help

There are also many dry mouth over-the-counter symptom relievers are available including special mouthwashthat does not contain alcohol. Dry mouth sprays can be helpful at night, but if they don't seem to have stayingpower, try the gels. Talk to your doctor about options that will work best for you.

All things creepy and mystical abound in October, including things magical, and, as of late, tech magic. One of the wonderful things about magic is thatthe concept has always remained the same while the illusions have adaptedwith the culture and changing times.

According to illusionist and endurance artist David Blaine, the first card trickto be recorded in 1478 would likely still fool you today. It depends on theskill of the performer, of course, but it is also dependent on the willingnessof the audience to be amazed.

Believe it or not, magic has always involved technology. A 17th-century German priest secretlyused a lantern to create ghosts for his watchers, Blaine wrote in The Economist. It was very hightech then since no one really expected a lantern to project images but today we call it a slideprojector and it likely wouldn't fool too many.

Illusionist Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin (Harry Houdini named himself after him) in 1856 usedelectromagnetism, then little known, to make it seem that, through his own will power, he couldprevent a strong man from picking up a small iron box. And today you'll see iPads pour beer orcell phones that magically text messages at the exact right time. Even phones that magically ringon cue. These days magicians can predict Tweets or pull a napkin clear through a cell phone.

At the heart of technology magic is the conviction that what appears to happen can't be possible. Can't be done. Meanwhile, the wily illusionist still shocks and amazes us with their time-testedskills. Today, if you want to be amazed there is a lot of magic out there, both old and new. And,really, who cares how it's done? It's still cool to be amazed.

Tables are Turned on Our Dakim AmbassadorWhile doing a presentation for the residents of Bartley Healthcare, one of our

Dakim Ambassadors, Maureen Rossi, was surprised she had a thing or two to learnherself. When she asked what they do to challenge themselves with numbers and

logic, the residents said they played Rummikub, a strategy game featuringnumbered tiles. It holds the attention of people playing, stimulates the imagination, challenges their wits and all while having fun. The Director of the community askedMaureen to play the game with one of the residents who is living with Alzheimer’s

and another gentleman who had suffered a stroke and needed to communicate viaa white board. Even so, the residents handily beat the ambassador who promptly

went out and contacted the game’smanufacturer and persuaded them to donate

fifteen Rummikub games to lower incomecommunities. As Maureen said, “I will never

again have preconceived notions about whatpeople can or cannot do.”

Stop Us if We’ve Told You This BeforeThe experiments of Nigel Gople of the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto and

Colin MacLeod of the University of Waterloo indicate that there’s a differencebetween our destination memory (remembering to whom we’ve told something)

and our memory for information in general. Participants in their study were brokeninto two groups, each of which looked at the faces of famous people paired with

random facts on a computer screen. However, one group, the destination memorygroup, was asked to actually ‘tell’ the fact to the face on the screen. While both

groups correctly remembered both facts and faces, the destination memory groupscored 15% lower on pairing the facts with the faces they told the facts to.

The scientists speculate that this is due to some kind of ‘brain drain.’ When givingout information, our brain is focused not only on the facts, but upon ourselves.

Leaving less immediate resources in our brain for remembering to whom we toldthe information. Gopie goes on to say that he’d expect to find in an experiment

“that people who are self-focused would have worse destination memory.”So, narcissists be aware. Be very aware.

Where Are the Car Keys?Science Daily Says to Ask a Woman.

A woman is more likely to remember everyday things likewhere she left her car keys than a man. At least that’s what

an article printed in Science Daily indicated. PsychologistsAgneta Herlitz and Jenny Rehnman in Stockholm found that

women excelled in verbal episodic memory tasks likeremembering events, faces, pictures and words as well as tasks that required bothverbal and visuospatial processing like remembering where a particular object had

been last seen. On the other hand, men performed better for remembering non-linguistic (visuospatial) information. So, a man is more likely to remember his way

out of the woods. Which may be the answer to why men don’t feel the need to askfor directions. (Even if they can’t always find the car keys.)

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

Say hello to John Hursey! You may have already heard John on the piano - hebegan playing at three years old! His grandmother, who played very little piano

herself, taught John how to play “Chopsticks,” and it fueled a desire to learnmusic. John was born in Indiana and studied for awhile at Purdue University.

He came to California in 1979 to escape the winter blizzards and taught himselfcomputer programming. John then answered an ad in the newspaper for a

programmer for Santa Clara County, and ended up working for the County for35 years! He worked with a computerized fingerprint system called AFIS and itscompanion program CJIC. John loves to cook and is an admirer of the Barefoot

Contessa. He also loves to watch sports on TV and is a big fan of all our BayArea teams, especially the Warriors! John enjoys natural history and gardening,

and likes going to see Egyptian artifacts and petting zoos. Please give John awarm welcome!
