FROM THE OFFICE
1. Please remember that
dogs must be on a leash
when you walk them in
the park and you must
pick up after them EVE-
RY time.
2. STREET PARKING: Parking is only allowed on
the street short term, meaning for no more than 2
or 3 hours. If you
have a guest that is
going to be at your
house for longer
than that, they need
to park in your
driveway or they
can park up by the
common areas.
These streets are fairly narrow and we cannot
block fire trucks or first responders from getting
to where they need to go. See below.
3. We will be bringing in a large roll off dumpster
that residents will be
able to use for a fall
cleanout. Our plan is
to bring it in around
the time of the No-
vember Yard Sale.
We will have it
dumped and returned a few times, so please be
patient. If it is full, do not add anything more to
it until it has been dumped. Please keep in mind
that hazardous materials are never to be thrown
away in these dumpsters. If you have items like
that, you will need to contact the City of Phoenix
to find the best way to dispose of those items.
Also, just a tip……if you have appliances you
are wanting to get rid of, there are many recy-
cling places and used appliance stores in Phoenix
that will come and pick them up and make use of
them rather than fill our landfills with them.
Perhaps we should all read our Rules and Regulations once a year! It’s so easy to forget how our lives are regulated.
For security, keep an outside light on front and back at
night or have motion-triggered lights!!
If you leave your vehicle parked on the street outside
of the limits described above you will likely see one
of these tickets attached to a window.
The one you see in the back is the initial warning to
let you know your vehicle was parked illegally. This
is a warning only, so that you are aware of the situa-
tion. If you continue to leave the vehicle parked ille-
gally you may get one or more warnings.
However, if you choose to disregard these warnings
you will next see an orange ticket like the one in
front. This will give notice as to when the vehicle
will be towed if you do not move it immediately.

ROYAL REPORT
ROYAL PALM BIKE CLUB
By Lu Albanese
Sun Cyclery of Phoenix is providing an opportunity
for Royal Palm Park residents and their friends to try
a recumbent trike on Sunday, October 20th, from 1-3
pm next to the Clubhouse along B Street. There is no
charge or expense to try. They will bring a few differ-
ent styles. A tadpole (1 wheel in back, 2 in front, a
delta (1 wheel in front, 2 wheels in back), and possi-
bly a trike with a lower seat, one with a little higher
seat, and one with an adjustable seat back. A very
wise man, John Koch, said to this woman: “if a para-
lyzed woman and an 88-year-old man can ride, any-
one can”.
A trike is a personalized fit ... not every trike fits eve-
ryone! There is even adaptive equipment available so
paralyzed riders like me can ride. I tried many, but
the one I ride has the right fit ... the right feel and ul-
timately the right price. Don't be shy, come out and
try.. This is exActly how I found out about it…
There was a Try-A-Trike event at the gym I go to.
On a side note…. the
Royal Palm Bike
Club welcomes new
members always.
We come with a di-
verse range of expe-
rience and skills and
types of bikes. Examples of recumbent trikes

Come crafting with us! Every Tuesday at 11:00 A.M.
residents come to the Clubhouse to work on their arts
and crafts with the benefits of exploring their creativ-
ity and lively discussions. I went a few weeks ago
and found neighbors Chris and Jane hard at work
having fun.
Chris was making scrubbers. She has a form she us-
es to weave colored yarns into hollow balls with a
hole in the top. The scrubbers can be used as dish-
washers, change purses, doorknob covers, or even to
throw at a loved one to get their attention without
hurting them. Chris donates a lot of the scrubbers she
makes to her church to help raise money.
While working on her scrubbers, Chris told us of an
upcoming trip her group is takIng to Israel. They
plan on seeing Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Palestine
among others. I can’t wait to hear the stories she
comes back with after her adventurous trip.
Jane was making a place mat which Chris said
looked like an Easter egg because of the shape and
bright colors Jane was using. Jane also makes little
fuzzy things like penguins, Christmas trees, and
flags. They can be used for pins, pendants, Christ-
mas decorations, and all sorts of things.
Crafts is a little slow now because of the summer
heat and the lack of snowbirds. Sometimes they do
team crafts like quilting, knitting, card making, mak-
ing jewelry, and crocheting. They are always look-
ing for people to join in their craft group. So, feel
free to come and join in. Or just sit, watch, and visit.
With holidays quickly approaching, what a better
way to spend some time gathering with neighbors to
create something special for the people in your life.
Speaking of holidays, Halloween is coming up, how
about bringing a pumpkin to carve into a jack-o-
lantern? Arts and crafts is every Tuesday at 11:00
A.M. in the Clubhouse. Feel free to bring a lunch or
drinks as they often spend hours having fun.
(If you have an event, story, or anything of interest
you would like to share with the community please
contact O’Dell at (620) 930-8156 or at
Chris’s scrubbers and Jane’s fuzzy things

See something? Say something! Call 9-1-1 first if an emergency. Call Crime Stoppers (602) 262-6151 for non-emergency crime reporting
Most every Tuesday from 11 AM to around 3 PM
you will find a group of women, and sometimes men,
gathered in the clubhouse to work on their personal
craft projects. Sometimes there will be an optional
class taught by one of the group or someone from
outside. If you have a special craft you like to do,
consider sharing it with others in the Craft Group.
The primary objective of this group is to simply en-
joy each other’s company and to share craft project
ideas. Contact Chris Nugent, (708) 516-5247, for
more information.

ROYAL PALM BLOCK WATCH PATROL
by Terry Ash
New Name, Same Patrol
At the beginning of September our community wel-
comed a new community patrol. It is now called the
Royal Palm Block Watch Patrol. The old PNP as we
all know it is now working with our Royal Palm Park
Association This was done to keep the community
more involved with the day to day operations of the
Patrol. I approached the Association and askEd for
their help. They have a working relationship with
management here at Royal Palm. The Association
will help with items for the Patrol and is in the pro-
cess of creating a new logo for Block Watch. The
vehicles will soon be marked with our own commu-
nity logos. Be on the look out for our Officers. They
will be wearing vests over their shirts. The vests will
also be marked with our new logo.
A new start to the program, "OF THE COMMUNITY
FOR THE COMMUNITY" This is what we are all
about. We have monthly meetings that are open to
everyone. These are on the 1st Tuesday of the month
at 6 pm in the Clubhouse.
The Officers and I want to thank Elaine and David
Violette for working with me to make this transition
to the Block Watch Patrol, and they are both very
active Patrol Officers!
New Officers
The Royal Palm Block Watch wants to welcome
these new Officers to our program. They have just
graduated from the Phoenix Police Training and are
patrolling the community and helping to make it safe
and crime free place for us to live.

Many homes do not have an outside light that can be
on at night for security and protection! Here’s your
chance to get one at low cost—$7.50 per light.
These lights are solar powered. Install them any-
where that they will
get sun. They have
motion sensors, so
they only come on as
lOng as there is mo-
tion they can detect.
Helpful to scare off
intruders.
They are for your safe-
ty as well. You don’t
have to go into a dark yard at night.
Dave Violette, D54, (602) 803-5615 is selling them

ROYAL PALM WRITERS GROUP
By Patti Dinsmore
Do you have a story you want to get down on paper?
Do you like to write poetry? Are you interested in, or
currentTy doing, blogging? Is it hard to find the time
to sit down and put pen to paper?
I am a writer currently working on a full-length nov-
el. I am interested in creating a writer’s group that
meets weekly to work on our material in a supportive
environment. Whether you are new to writing, half-
way through your novel, or a published author, we
want you to join our group!
Are you interested in having others critique your
work in a safe environment? Do you want to learn
more about publishing, writing techniques, or need
help on story ideas? Then this group is for you!
I am planning a meet-and-greet on Saturday, October
12th, 2019 at 10:00 AM. We will meet in the Card
Room and brainstorm what type of writers group we
want and dates and times to meet.
If you are interested, or want to learn more, meet me
then at that meeting, email me at thevagabondteach-
[email protected], call me at (504) 510-9219, or
stop by the house at Lot B132.
See you then!

Royal Palm Women’s Club

a month, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each
month. The first meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m.
and the 2nd meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. One of
the events hosted by the Women’s Club is the annual
Paramedics/Firemen Party held in March. Money is
raised to give to the local firehouse for them to buy
any non-budgeted items they need. In the past, we
have presented them with $1,500 at a party held in
their honor. Other events we have had are bake sales,
yard sales, and luncheons. The events this year will
be coordinated with the Royal Palm Association
members. At the end of the year, we choose a few
worthwhile charities to give the balance of our mon-

husband and father who must rush to Florida when his elderly
mother becomes ill. But when his senile father (Don Ameche )
burns down their house, Jon is forced to bring his parents home

ROYAL PALM SPOTLIGHT
Many of us cannot imagine working for a single em-
ployer for 33 years, but Frances Hedrick did! She
went to work for the US Postal Service in 1979 and
retired in 2011. She started in an entry job sorting
mail, but soon moved into what she wanted—a secre-
tarial spot. She had worked as a
secretary for several companies
earlier in her working life, so this
was nothing new. One project she
was assigned to near the end of
her career was to set up a system
for tracking employee credit
cards and charges.
Originally from Clarksville, Ten-
nessee, she grew up in a small
country town, living a quiet life
that was so common in those
days. Lock your doors? Never.
Not needed. She says she was a
tomboy and enjoyed doing all the
stuff the boys did in those days.
Clarksville is a small town in
northwestern TN and near the
Kentucky border.
She married at 19 and had her
first daughter at 20, her second at 21. Her husband
had joined the US Army and they were posted in
overseas locations such as Germany, Austria, and
Switzerland while in the service. Upon separation
from the service they located in Oakton, in Fairfax
County VA. In her ten years or so in Oakton, she
worked as secretary for a research and development
company.
In 1979 she and her family moved to Phoenix, where
her husband hoped to get construction work. They
bought a house near Indian School Road and 62nd
Avenue, where they lived for twelve years, at which
time they divorced.
Frances met Garett Haynes, who was a Phoenix
Transit bus driver, while she rode the bus to and from
work each day. They spent time talking and eventual-
ly started hiking together. Garett lived at E225 in
Royal Palm. After several months they decided to
buy a home together—A192 which was for sale.
A few years later a granddaughter came to live with
Frances and they were no longer qualified to live in
Royal Palm, so they bought a house near Deer Valley
Road and Cave Creek Road,
where they lived for four years.
Once the granddaughter was on
her own, Frances and Garett
moved back to Royal Palm to their
current residence at A198, where
they have been since 2002.
Frances loves living in Royal
Palm. She likes being able to see
and visit with friends easily and
has been active in organizations in
the Park. She is active in Women
On The Go, is Treasurer of the
Women’s Club, and is a Member
At Large on the Park Association
Board.
Garett was an avid hiker, and they
used to do a lot of that activity,
though she doesn’t much now.
While living in Virgina she
learned to waterski and later on
she got a motorcycle license. She enjoyed that for a
few years but was never comfortable driving a motor-
cycle on Phoenix streets so she let that license drop.
She enjoys walking here in the Park now (when the
weather is cool).
She is an avid reader. She likes mostly mysteries,
though she also reads some history and some biog-
raphy. Among her favorite authors are Greg Iles,
Preston & Child, Stuart Woods, Lee Childs, and Har-
len Coben.
She loves to play Bingo, and is a regular here in Roy-
al Palm. She also plays Bingo at the Italian Club.
You will also find her at karaoke. At first she says
she just went and listened, but after a while she de-
cided to try her hand at singing. Now you’ll see her
doing one or more songs at each karaoke session here
in the Park. She’ll often pick a country song to sing,

but gets in at
least one good
old gospel song
each session.
She loves those
old time gospel
songs.
She is active on
her computer at
home. She
keeps her mind
active playing
trivia games
and says she
does quite well.
She is sur-
prised at how much trivia she can remember! She
also goes to a new word of the day app to keep her
vocabulary lively. She remembers enjoying that fea-
ture in Reader’s Digest years ago.
She sewed years ago and also collected dolls such as
those from the
Madame Alexan-
der line. While she
used to have quite
a doll collection,
she has since given
those away to fam-
ily members.
She has also been
an avid quilter, and
used to make baby
quilts and other
styles. She also
loves to do crochet
and making jewel-
ry.
Frances is easy to find here at Royal Palm. If there is
an activity going on you’ll likely find here there—
often as a volunteer helping to make it happen. Thank
goodness for people like Frances in our community!

ROYAL PALM BOOK CLUB
By Patti Dinsmore
I am interested in forming a Royal Palm Book Club
that meets once a month. At our first meeting we will
discuss what genre’s the club members like to read.
We will also create a schedule on which books we
will read; giving each member the opportunity to in-
troduce us to a book they love, or one they have been
wanting to read. This will be on a rotating basis, so
all members have the chance to choose a book for the
club to read.
Everyone will read the chosen book during the next
month and then we will get together to discuss the
book as a group. We can decide if we want to choose
one person to lead every discussion, or if we want the
person who chose the book to lead. This will be an
opportunity for you to read something you may not
have thought about reading before.
I have been involved in book clubs in the past and
have found it to be a very enjoyable activity where
you get the chance to read a new book, discuss it
with friends, and enjoy each other’s company; coffee
and dessert make it that much better!
At our first meeting we can also discuss where we
will meet and the dates and times as well. I am pro-
posing an initial meeting be held in the Card Room
on Saturday, October 26th, at 10:00 AM.
If you are interested, or want to learn more, meet me
then, email me at thevagabondteach-
[email protected], call me at (504) 510-9219, or
stop by the house at Lot B132.
Looking forward to meeting you soon!
