NOISES FROM THE BIG END By popular request we are looking at becoming members of the Motorcycle Council of NSW. This will allow us to align the CEMCC with the RMS requirements for the Classic Vehicle Scheme (CVS) registration. This will not affect our existing Historic Vehicle Scheme (HVS) registration, but will allow our club to cater for modified vehicles. Before final adoption of the CVS, more discussion will be needed to determine a list of acceptable vehicle types and modifications. It was good to hear our guest speaker Brian Powyer from National Trust give a talk on the intrepid sailors who found our great southern land , (before and after Capt. Cook), titled ‘Almost French’. It’s interesting to learn how stories are told in such a way that the truth gets distorted. Finding out that Capt. Cook was not the first to discover Australia, we can conclude that all truisms are not always true. For example: Vincents may not the best bike, even though owners say they are (True or False?) but they have proven to be the most expensive, as the Jack Ehret Vincent was sold recently for a record $1.35 million. Purchased by a local Tasmanian businessman and stabled alongside his collection of other exotic machines (Brough Superior / Matchless Silver Hawk & Chiko roll poster ). The stuff that dreams are made of (Not Honda Dreams). The Bulli Show attracted a wide range of Veteran Vintage and Classic machines including the Jack Ehret Vincent and was a great place to catch up with old friends and characters for a chat and a perusal of the swap meet offerings. The younger Gen X-Y, tend to take a lot of selfies and always include food. At Bulli it was good to see the older generation embracing modern trends and taking selfies, not with food, but with other people’s bikes. It just goes to show you are never too old to learn new tricks. The restoration saga of my AJS continues with the fabrication of new front mudguard stays to suit its 21” front wheel. Club member Greg Chaney was a great help and fabricated a bending tool to suit the alloy guard and I made a welding jig to hold the locating tabs in place. If anyone needs tubular stays for their 19” or 21” wheels, I am happy to loan out the bending tool and welding jig. The tool is designed to bend 3/8” tubular 304 Stainless Steel as well as Mild Steel. The Oberon rally entries are flying in and I received an enquiry from our Orange branch about the eligibility of bikes for judging and am happy to confirm there are 5 equal categories for both Classic and AMC (AJS-Matchless) bikes. Ranging from Best 20’s and earlier / Best 30’s / Best 40’s / Best 50’s / Best 60’s and later. Entrants will judge the best AMC and the best Classic in each category (10 trophies). With an additional 3 AMC perpetual awards. In the mean time I am looking for Volunteers to assist with rally organisation. Please contact me on (02) 96009894 or email me on [email protected] if you can help as a corner marshal, a BBQ Chef or with a back up trailer. Remember Oberon rally entries close next month on 4th October. Yours in Motorcycling……………David

THE VICE REPORT Geoff Mack was a wonderfully talented and clever musician and entertainer. He was born here in Sydney in 1922, and died just two years ago, aged 95. He had been awarded a number of Hall of Fame awards, and song writers awards, both here and in the US, and was awarded the OAM in 2005 for services to country music and to the community. His most endearing testimonial is that in 1959 he penned the mega hit song “I've Been Everywhere.” If you ever get to hear “I've Had Everything”, you'll wet yourself laughing! But our interest in Geoff has to do with, you guessed it, Panthers. In 1954, he and his comedienne wife Tabbi Francis, rode a 1954 Panther outfit from London to Sydney. After serving in the RAAF during WW2 as a mechanic, Geoff was performing in the UK and Germany, as well as the Middle East. He had met and married UK dancer and comedienne Tabbi Francis, and by 1954 had decided it was time to return to Australia. He had been riding an old side-valve Sunbeam, and bought a new 1954 swing-arm Panther for the epic trip, on the basis of its simplicity and relative lack of moving parts. The Panther had a Canterbury child-adult sidecar attached, to carry all the precious supplies. They left London in September 1954, travelling to Belgium, then down through Europe, via Croatia to Turkey, where the Panther's swing-arm broke, needing repair. (Many years ago, I met a father and son who had both worked at Phelon and Moore, in Cleckheaton, in the early 1950s, the son as an apprentice welder. I remember the father telling me that the son had welded brackets onto the swing-arms upside down. Maybe this was one of his jobs?) By Persia, the sidecar body had more or less fallen apart and was thrown away, but the canopy kept and turned upside down, to carry their supplies. They travelled through Pakistan and into India via the Khyber Pass. A boat from Bombay to Ceylon, then another boat to Fremantle. Then they rode across this vast nation of ours, ending in Sydney in December 1954. Thirteen weeks and 13,000 miles. The Panther was used for a number of years, until work dictated the purchase of a van, and the bike was laid up under their home in Mt Kuring-Gai for a number of years. The bike has resided in the Country Music Museum in Tamworth for a quite some time now, where Geoff still has legendary status. A few years ago, Old Bike Australasia did a story on Geoff and the Panther. A photo of the bike in Tamworth showed the original oil filler cap on the sump missing, a nondescript plumbing fitting in its place. Back in August 2014, I had the enormous pleasure and privilege to meet Geoff and Tabbi at their home, introduced by a mutual friend. I took my 1948 Panther outfit there, which Geoff and Tabbi were genuinely overjoyed to see. I asked Geoff what the story was regarding the oil filler cap. He told me that it had come out one night up in the Maitland area back in the 50s. A year or two later, we visited Tamworth with a genuine filler cap (ex-Pink Panther). Geoff's musical career would take a book to tell. The accompanying photo shows Geoff and Tabbi with my Panther in their driveway back in 2014. Geoff was wearing a PANTHER-embroidered jumper he had had for many years, a complete coincidence. Yours in Vice (Presidency), David Lewis.

CLASSIC CLATTER – SEPTEMBER The AMCA Australia Inc National Meet at Bulli last month was most enjoyable, and continues to get better each year. A range of machines from the mildly(?) crazy supercharged 5 litre V twin derived from a Rolls Royce Mosquito aircraft engine to the legendary Jack Ehret record breaking (for speed and price paid at auction) Vincent Black Lightning. What I found most engaging was the stories around the people associated with the bikes. Lucky Keizer, the owner and builder of the 5 litre V twin described how it was really a life’s work, and will never be really “finished”. The fact that it is quite impractical is of no consequence – why did you feel the need to supercharge a 5 litre V twin? Because I can, and why not? The stories around the Jack Ehret Vincent were a window back in time. A woman who worked with Jack Ehret back in his motorcycle shop, and of course I can’t recall her name, told of her experiences riding the shop Indian sidecar on goods pick ups and broken motorcycle rescues. This lady has only stopped riding motorcycles recently, I think at 89 years of age or so. Then Jack Ehrets’ son took the Vincent for a spin round the trotting track – there goes 1.3 million dollars worth of motorcycle on a dusty and sandy track. Great to see (and hear), and a credit to the owner for not locking it up in a glass display cabinet but to have it out there being ridden by someone with such connection to its story. Recalling the stories from member Keith Lawson of his motorcycling experiences from the thirties as told at the August Illawarra meeting, the recollections of rides and experiences in discussions with members on runs, articles like David Lewis’ story in this edition about Geoff Mack and Tabbi Francis, got me to remembering that whilst the bikes are great, and riding them even better, it’s the stories and experiences of the people associated with them that’s the icing on the cake of this strange obsession we have with motorcycling. No doubt members noticed a bit of a glitch with the printed September edition – the pages were collated and stapled out of order. We have added page numbers to help the printer control the risk of a recurrence. Keep the contributions and letters to the editor coming in, the Clatter is your newsletter. Thanks to all contributors and the closing date for submissions to the next edition is Friday 18 October. Dear Editor As a result of motion passed unanimously at the most recent meeting of the Orange Branch of the CEMCC, I have been requested to register our concern by the decision of the Committee to run the CEMCC rally at Oberon under the auspices of the AJS Club. There is no mention of the CEMCC in the entry form; when you ring the caravan park at Oberon you are asked if you are a member of the AJS club – again, no mention of the CEMCC. Orange Club members have supported the Oberon Rally for many years and are very disappointed by the manner in which this change has been implemented, apparently without consultation with the wider membership. Members have also expressed concern as to whether funding for the rally is coming from the AJS Club, or from the CEMCC. If support in organising the rally is an issue, then a discussion and approach to both Illawarra and Orange Branches may have resulted in the Rally running. We are one, unique club with three branches. Our future strength as a club lies in unity and consultation! David Scott, Secretary, Orange Branch of the CEMCC.

Occasional Comments - Alan Harper

The Nepean 60th anniversary meeting at Castlereagh was well attended in superb weather. There was a full card of races it was action all the way. Saturday was practice in the morning and 2 x 25 lap races in the afternoon. Sunday was a packed program with races being just 3 laps and finals only 5 laps in order to get them all in within the restrictive times allowed. Sunday was the main day and there was a good display of vintage dirt machinery to be viewed near the pits as well as the packed program of racing. Club Run to Colo, again poorly attended in cold conditions we set off to Colo, at Colo café there were several police cars and bikes in the parking lot, so there must be a bit of a blitz on the Putty road at the moment. We headed up to Colo Heights and found several members and ex members having a coffee at the petrol station. We stayed there and chatted for a while, giving the police time to disperse before heading back down at a steady pace for brunch at the café. AMCA swap meet and show was blessed with great weather and had good crowds attending. There was plenty of early American motorcycles on display and parts for them in the swap meet. The parking lots always are worth a look with plenty of fantastic bikes to look over. Not too much caught my eye in the swap meet other than there was a complete set of Triumph "generator" engines, a TR5, a generator set and a GP on display. The auction on Saturday afternoon attracted plenty of lookers, but not too many buyers and not many of the bikes sold on the day. Share a name share an interest ? I have come into contact with a number of other Alan Harpers over the years, one was a Classic Racer, I met when I started classic racing and was allocated his racing number when I applied for a licence. He contacted me and I changed my number, no use causing confusion and blackening his record. Another I haven't met is in England in the Velocette club and mentioned in a Velocette book I read, while another my son pointed out to me was selling a motorcycle on facebook, it so happens we also have the exact same model Aprilia RS125 in our garage and Alex was concerned it was me trying to sell his bike. Passing of a life member - We received a letter from Val Harslett advising of the passing of her husband Ken Harslett (5 July 2019, aged 94), a life member of the club. Ken was a foundation member of the club and instrumental in the

setting up of the Classic & Enthusiasts Motor Cycle

Club as a breakaway from the Vintage

Motorcycle club to cater for post 1947 motorcycles. He served in a number of roles in the early days of the club and was honoured with a life membership. He

retired to Tasmania quite some years back.

It is with sadness I also notify members that Brian Robertson, a good clubman passed away in August. A bit of a loner but one who attended rides, rallies and most meetings where he was able, but in recent years a battle with cancer and a road accident resulted in a loss of licence until he could prove fitness slowed him down, but he frequently attended the Sydney meetings until the last months where he was unable to attend.

Ken Harslett taken at his 70th birthday.

Petrol to Alcohol Conversion. Contributed by Mark Mansell 274.

So what is the big deal about using alcohol as a fuel instead of petrol, more correctly named Iso-octane? Hopefully further illumination on this topic, long considered a black art by the un-informed, will be revealed as I try and compress 45 years of knowledge and experience on this subject into a readable and informative reference document for the more technically minded club members. Classic and Vintage racers are obviously included. The latent heat of vaporisation of alcohol is clearly noticed when you spill a bit of Methylated Spirits on your hand or arm. The immediate cooling effect is the most noticeable result. This is because as the Methylated Spirit (methyl alcohol), evaporates it removes heat from your body, in this case the skin immediately in contact with the liquid. Good old Metho is exactly the same as pure alcohol with the only exception being that it is de-natured by the addition of a terribly bad tasting substance which makes it unpalatable to humans, so that certain people won’t use it to increase the alcoholic content of their lemonade or orange juice. It is more recently being sold as de-natured ethanol. Ethanol and Methanol are fatal to humans, and most other animals known to inhabit this planet. The difference between ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and methanol (methyl alcohol) is that a molecule of ethanol contains only one hydrogen atom less than methanol. To all intents and purposes, they are basically the same substance. So be careful when using E-10 fuel in a lawn mower or weed eater with PVC fuel lines. The alcohol content will react with the fuel lines, and any other plastic components within the carburettor for that matter, in a very short time, making them so brittle that the slightest vibration will render them useless, or simply dissolve them altogether. On the other hand, if the device is designed for Ethanol modified fuels then no drama, go ahead and use it. The same cooling effect is felt on the skin with petrol as well, but it is not as intense and it won’t always totally evaporate. It needs a breeze or forced air draught to encourage the vaporisation process, such as that encountered when air is drawn into an engine cylinder by a descending piston, through the venturi of a carburettor for example. Plus petrol contains many additives that stabilise its volatility, aid starting on cold days, prevents or retards evaporation on hot days and other dubious substances like traces of dieseline, waxes, colouring and anti-oxidants and water dispersants that all still burn sort of, and therefore add to the heat input of the engine, but are not really to the purists way of thinking the best way to go. All these additives could be regarded as impurities, they are after all, the result of a multitude of compromises that make good old petrol as user friendly to as wide a base of prospective buyers as possible. For example, the automotive industry with its countless variations of SUV’s, FWD’s, MUV’s, RWD’s, XUV’s and everything in between that has the possibility of burning petrol in any of its usually available forms such as 98, 95, E-10, 94 or 91. If it has the slightest chance of burning in your engine they will sell it to you in one form or another. Avgas, in a similar way, has been developed for the huge usage in the aircraft industry. Diesel fuels have also suffered from this same “watering down” with the additions of sulphur and other chemical de-odorizers it to make them more greenie friendly, just like the petrol and 10% ethanol products have been a compromise bending towards a growing market of people who are being made to feel guilty for burning the stuff in the first place. I digress however. So what is wrong with adding stuff to a fuel anyway, the Mercedes Benz team of racing cars were using a blend of alcohol, benzol, ether and a trace of upper cylinder lubricant, in their hugely successful assault on the Grand Prix circuits between the wars. The obvious difference is that they were in control of what was added to the base fuel. No compromise was or had to be met or made. So let us take it for granted then that petrol in any of its forms contains things that we may not want to be in the mixture. Methanol on the other hand is simply that. 100% methanol. So we can add anything we like for example a trace of ether to aid starting on a cold day or a bit of upper cylinder lubricant. But we are now in charge. Not the petrol company. We may even wish to add nothing at all. So what are the benefits of using methanol anyway? Firstly let’s look at a property known as latent heat. If you burn a given volume of methanol you will get a certain amount of heat out of it. Just like adding logs onto the fire. Logs however don’t lend themselves to being easily squeezed into fuel tanks or passing through jets and fuel taps but it is really the same thing. More logs getting burnt produce more fire. The funny thing is however, that if you burn the same amount of methanol and the same amount of ANY petrol, the petrol will produce more heat. Methanol doesn’t make as much heat per given volume burnt as petrol does. So why use it then?

The real benefits of using methanol as a fuel are its cooling effect, its high anti-knock properties and completeness of combustion. A much higher compression ratio can, and should, be used with methanol. I often have a quite chuckle when I hear people bragging about the extra power they are getting from methanol, but haven’t increased their compression ratio. These people are the ones that our dear old friend Eric Debenham referred to as Doll Fondlers. So a higher compression ratio is a must to take advantage of this higher anti-knock rating but it also increases the engines volumetric efficiency. Even if nothing else is changed the volumetric efficiency will be improved by this single expedient. But to take advantage of this fuel’s burning properties we must burn about twice as much of it as we would with petrol. Yes methanol loves to combine with oxygen as it liberates heat during its act of burning inside the cylinder. It’s really not a bad thing that we have to burn twice as much of it as what we would using petrol. That will help to off-set the extra heat produced by the higher compression ratio. In fact, the engine may be over cooled. Midget Speedcars running old grey Holden engines on speedways, when converted to methanol, had to halve the speed of the water pump to prevent the engine from running too cold. I remember seeing midget speedcars coming into the pits after a 20 lap race in the middle of summer with icicles on the inlet trumpets. Drag bikes and speedway bikes use somewhat scanty finning when compared to their petrol drinking opponents. Because these events are usually of short duration, the size of the fuel tank can be kept to a very small size. A road racing motorcycle on the other hand may require a much larger fuel tank than it would if using petrol, to avoid a pit stop for re-fuelling. Another thing that seems to have been forgotten is that when using methanol, only an aromatic engine oil should be used in the lubrication system. Aromatic oils are derived from plants, as is methanol, the two therefore being compatible. Typical examples of aromatic oil are castor oil or vegetable oil. Remember that wonderfully arousing aroma at the speedway? It was the fumes from burning castor oil and methanol. Thankfully this combination has never had to be de-natured to prevent addicts from sniffing the stuff. If a mineral oil is used, then hydraulic locking becomes a distinct possibility as traces of the alcohol inevitably leak into the crank case, get beaten up with the mineral oil, which it is totally unable to blend with, and has the propensity to bend connecting rods, shear gudgeon pins, break crank pins and bend crank main shafts. The greater the number of cylinders the greater this risk becomes. Mineral oil modifiers are available but to be chemically correct and to add safety to the engine a true aromatic oil should be used. Some people don’t do this. See the above notes referring to Doll Fondlers. Another benefit from using methanol as a fuel is that it burns very cleanly. As it burns it combines with oxygen and forms water vapour and carbon dioxide which are both vital ingredients for growing plants. Traces of carbon monoxide are also produced but nowhere near the proportions from burning iso-octane, (petrol). In fact the only carbon build up on the piston crown or valves, if it could even be called a carbon build up at all, is just a shiny light brown film, somewhat resembling a light wood stain or varnish. Ignition timing usually has to be advanced somewhat because of this fuel’s slow burning properties. But the increase in compression ratio will make this not as much as one might expect. For example a 500cc single running at 14:1 compression ratio and an ignition advance of 36 degrees using methanol, would be running an ignition advance of 34 degrees at 10:1 on petrol with greatly reduced power output. Slightly colder heat range spark plugs can and should be used also as the correct mixture with methanol is slightly always tending to the rich side. If using say an NGK 8 BVES on petrol (iso-ictane), then a BVES 10 or 9 would be better for methanol. There are two reasons why. Firstly the clean burning nature of methanol keeps the plug centre and earth electrodes clean without having to burn impurities off. Secondly, why keep a plug at its higher upper limit of endurance for no reason? Another fact about methanol is that it burns invisibly to the naked eye. There is no smoke, no flame colour such as when iso-octane burns. I remember watching an old Castrol movie showing an Indianapolis speedway driver jumping out of his stationary car in the pit lane during a fuel stop. He was doing a funny dance. It took a while for the crew to realise the poor bugger was actually on fire. After this accident an additive to the methanol to make it burn visibly was implemented. Not all suppliers of methanol include this. So to summarise, the use of methanol as a fuel can be very advantageous if done properly and under the correct conditions. For example if entering a 24 hour endurance race methanol would be a poor choice as more time in the pits refuelling would hardly offset any benefits on the track. Unless of course it was a stipulated regulation fuel. Shorter distance races and sprints are where this fuel really becomes a tangible asset. Never forget that it is always wise to err on the richer side of correct mixture than the leaner side. Any leanness of a methanol fuel will end in tears. It will make all your efforts look like a piece of scrap metal in literally no time at all. Use only polyurethane fuel lines. Make sure the

O-rings in your fuel taps and carburettors are alcohol resistant. Chemraz, Kalrez, Hydrogenated Nitrile, Natural rubber, Virgin Teflon, Neoprene and Teflon are fine. Wash out all traces of methanol fuel after every meeting as soon as you can because it will corrode aluminium. Some manufacturers of pump type carburettors sell alcohol resistant diaphragm kits. Always be careful handling the stuff because it is toxic to humans. For the benefit of those wishing to modify their fuel systems for the use of methanol, the chart below could be very useful. Obviously the increases in area shown in the chart necessitate the free flowing of all the other parts of the fuel line right from the tank to the float needles and jets.

Dave’s Diary No: 15 - Understand Your 4 stroke Engine's Cam Shaft

Tip #65 from the pages of The Total Motorcycling Manual

In almost every bike spec chart, you’ll see something describing camshaft layout, and sometimes it looks like gibberish.

SOHC, DOHC—what’s it all mean?

First, the basics: virtually every four-stroke internal-combustion engine has a camshaft. Its job is to open and close the

engine’s intake and exhaust valves—like a person inhaling and exhaling. The cam can be in two locations: inboard or

over-head.

Inboard cams (seen in Harley-Davidsons and old Triumph Twins) need to reach up to the valves with a system of

pushrods and rocker arms, all of which reciprocate back and forth. That’s a lot of metal thrashing around, and it means

such engines can’t rev as high, and consequently produce less power.

Overhead camshafts eliminate most of these extra parts by putting the cam(s) directly over the valves in the cylinder

head. The vast majority of modern motorcycle engines and more and more automotive engines use this design.

SOHC stands for single over-head cam, and it means one shaft (via rockers) opens both the intake and exhaust valves.

DOHC is double over-head cam, and means one shaft operates the intake valves while a second controls the exhausts.

DOHC designs allow the highest engine revs, and are typically seen in sportbikes. But they also often complicate valve-

adjustment procedures.

SOHC designs allow high-speed engine operation, although not as high as DOHC. (The number of valves per cylinder

and their individual weights influence this as well.) But an SOHC layout is often easier to service when it comes time for

a valve adjustment.

Do you really need to know all of this just to ride? Maybe not. But it’ll sure help you seem like less of a doofus when

you’re talking to those salesman, or to the guy sitting next to you at a biker bar.

Gordon Crisp, CEMCC Dry Lake Racer. Contributed by David Scott. Australia’s Utah is the dry salt lake, Lake Gairdner, located not far from Port Augusta, where once a year those with a passion for speed, either in cars and all sorts of bikes, get a chance to see how fast they can run over a 4 mile track. Gordon Crisp, a member of the Orange CEMCC, is one of our members who has a passion both for BSAs and speed! Other than recently restoring a Gold Star 500, his latest project was building a methanol fuelled, 1954 BSA 350 dry lake racer. In March this year, Gordon, who says this kind of racing is addictive, whilst slipping the clutch for 50 metres and hitting around 8000 rpm, managed to clock an admirable 97.68 mph on his BSA! Gordon’s 350 BSA runs methanol, with a compression of 14.5 to 1, and an Amal 10 TT, 1300 main jet and high lift cam, running standard crank and bearings. Gordon intends to run again next year, and as you can guess, plans to pass the elusive 100mph mark!

Gordon with his bike, and on the salt pan.
