FROM THE MINISTER Dear friends, I woke up this morning to see an autumn mist, and certainly that’s where we are – days shortening, leaves turning and falling, the celebration of Harvest and at home some more heating on. Winter will come again! And yet, it could be about more than “just getting through it”.

The eyes of the church world, so to

speak, are this month on a town in eastern Germany. Nothing to do with the recent German elections, rather the events which were unleashed 500 years ago, on 31st October 1517, by Martin Luther in the town of Wittenberg. I know I would quite like to go to visit there one day, because a lot of physical evidence has survived of these momentous times when a monk who studied his New Testament and was thoroughly fed up with the church of his day determined that some questions had to be answered, and answered well.

Well, Professor Bill McBryde from our congregation is going to do a talk on

Martin Luther around the anniversary, and also another talk on John Calvin, another huge figure of the sixteenth century. These will be talks about the people more than about the ideas. What was Martin Luther’s story? How did he make the impact he made? A vital part of this commemoration is that questions should be asked. Questions should be asked about how we read the Bible, and questions should be asked about matters we may be fed up with in the life of the church (in 2017, not just 1517). Luther was nothing if he was not a man of passion. The more we know, the more his faults and shortcomings are obvious! And yet where do we go without passion? To return to my opening paragraph, are we just tholing the cold, as it were, or might we ourselves carry something different within us, a heart for change, a heart to love? Do we walk away from the church or are we not the makers of it? I spoke just last week about how people regard us. Do they regard us as cold? I pray that we may be fired by the glory of God who takes us, flawed as we are, into following and serving as Jesus did.

Yours, Peter

“REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE DIED” This year on the last Sunday of October, at 6.30 pm, we have our annual service at

which we name out loud those who have died within the last year or longer ago.

Page 3: October 2017 for webl · 2017. 9. 29. · the celebration of Harvest and at home some more heating on. Winter will come again! And yet, it could be about more than “just getting

(Continued from previous page) It is a precious act of remembering lives shared and treasured still, and joining that with the knowledge of that love which will not let us go, Jesus giving himself to us as he did supremely through his death and resurrection. To celebrate the Lord’s Supper, then, is to own that focus. We belong together, and we belong together with him who died for us. I shall be inviting personally the families of those for whom Heidi, Morven or myself

have conducted funerals in the last year, but this is to invite others to come – to give

them support, and no doubt also to bring your own memories and thanksgivings. If

anyone would like another name read out, please do get in touch with us.

"Stay for Soup"

The long winter days will soon be upon us, so why not break up the day with a nice bowl of soup spent with friends? After a long break we have decided to bring back our winter soup lunches. Starting Sunday, October 29th all are invited to stay on after the 11AM service for a simple meal of soup and bread. There will be a choice of four soups all prepared by lovely Crown folk.

If you haven't told Heidi yet, but would like to either make a pot of soup, or serve some soup, please let her know. Anyone who would like to be involved is welcome, anyone who wants to share in fellowship with one another , please do come along. These will be held the last Sunday of the month October -March.

Ladies Retreat Time is marching on and I, soonish, will sadly be leaving my family at Crown to pursue my own charge. Before I go, I would very much like to lead another women's retreat. Several of you have asked for another, and many who were unable to join us last time have asked if I would be leading another. The weekend for the retreat is 10th to 12th November. I can take 15 plus myself. Sign ups will begin on Sunday, October

8th. Heidi

Celebrating 30 years of Launchpad. Launchpad Inverness was formed by Crown Church in 1987, with start-up funding of £500. The impetus to ‘do something to help the unemployed’ had come from the Kirk Session, who for a year or two before that time turned over the early part of their meetings to hear from different people on a wide variety of topics. This topic was introduced by Rev Dane Sherrard, then Minister in Buckhaven in Fife, who shared with the Session the wide range of initiatives which his congregation had set up to help the unemployed in his area. Some elders later visited the project, and were greatly impressed. They reported back enthusiastically, and the Kirk Session decided we would not copy the Fife blueprint, as the unemployment in our area was of a different nature, but that we should try to do something to assist those who were unemployed. The Outreach Committee were given the task of discerning the way forward, and they deliberated for many months before hearing about the ‘Launchpad’ scheme run by ‘Church Action with the Unemployed’. A small group operating within the Outreach Committee took on the development of a scheme, obtained the blessing of the Kirk Session and the grant from the Congregational Board, and eventually became Inverness Church Action with the Unemployed operating as ‘Launchpad’. (Sandra Gorman, Linda Moncur, Peter Drummond, George Paton, Eileen Ardern (Secretary), Donald Matheson (Treasurer), and Ivor Gordon(Chair). Donations were sought from some of the employers in town, and monies were received from banks, solicitors, hotels and a number of businesses and the Rotary Club. By May 1989, there was £1,180 in the bank, and five grants had been awarded - for attendance at a course, membership of the Printmakers Workshop, purchase of a stone polishing machine, purchase of a drum kit and purchase of garden tools. The

availability of grants had been advertised in the Job Centre, the CAB, the Spectrum Centre etc.. Various fund raising ventures within the

congregation followed in later years to

keep the fund topped up – a Disco, a

Session Concert, Coffee Mornings and

George Currie’s cycle challenge of 7,000

miles. In 1999, £10,000, half of the profit

from the Centenary Fund set up several

years of financial stability for Launchpad.

Two recipients of grants in the early days

wrote to us to express their thanks.

( Continued from previous page) One had taken a course which we paid for. He said “I have enclosed copies of the certificates because I feel Launchpad is as much a part of this success as I am. You gave me more strength than you will ever know.” The other was from another gentleman who we had funded to undertake three correspondence courses. “Late last year I applied to the Dundee Institute of Technology for a placement on a BA Honours Degree Course in Retail and Distribution Management. This is the first time this degree Course has been offered and the applications the Institute received were far greater than placements available. Today I received fantastic news, a letter offering me an unconditional place. I am sure you can well imagine I am absolutely over the moon. This means a great deal to me, I have no doubt the three correspondence courses Launchpad made possible for me to achieve were a major factor in the Institute’s decision to offer me a place. I am deeply grateful to you all.” Small grants bringing blessings far beyond their monetary value. 30 years on, we have interviewed some 600 applicants and made grants totalling £50,000. We thank everybody for their tremendous support over the years, and hope you will join us at our celebratory ceilidh on Saturday 25th November.

The Guild The new session of the Guild began on Tuesday 19th September with a very interesting update from Reay Macgill and Chrisanne Robertson on their latest visit to Malawi. There were lovely pictures of the ladies they have helped and the many children dressed in the school uniforms of Inverness and Wick primary schools. These young people are so delighted with their new outfits. A great need at present is to build toilets and work will be done to help with this in future. Both Reay and Chrisanne were congratulated on the efforts they have put in so far in all they have done for their projects in Malawi. We have three meetings in October. On the 3rd Mhairi Matheson will come to talk about miniature quilts. Our own Heidi Hercus will lead us in a Bible Study on the 17th and on the 31st Mark Hatfield is our guest speaker. He will give us insight into one of our two projects this year, namely, Street Pastors. This is the fifth of the six Guild projects we are supporting in this three year cycle. The Autumn Rally is in Ness Bank Church on Tuesday 24th October at 7:30pm when the speaker is to be Rev. Shuna Dick. We were pleased with the turnout last Tuesday but more members would be made most welcome. The Guild is a wonderful place to continue friendships and make new ones. Dorothy Mein, Guild Correspondent

A Trip of tremendous Blessing

It was with a heavy heart on Friday, September 22 the four ladies from Crown waved goodbye to our Brothers and Sisters in Christ from North Street Church, Jamaica. On Thursday, September 14, myself, Lena Clarke, Pat Crippin and Mairi Fraser boarded an early morning flight bound for Kingston. With Hurricane Irma having just passed through the Caribbean and Hurricane Jose following, it was touch and go if we were even going to make the flight. We were delighted when we got the all clear to go!

We arrived in a balmy 33 degree Kingston where our first taste of Jamaica was coconut water straight from the coconut. We arrived at our host family’s home, Radcliffe and Dawn Shurland. We all stayed together in the beautiful accommodation! Every morning we were cooked Jamaican food for breakfast and then headed out for a day full of activities! Our first day was a tremendous day of blessing at the North Street Primary School where we led devotions and singing. They then sang and recited Jamaican poetry for us, followed by a tour of the school. The children were so bright and affectionate, full of curiosity and energy.

We took in the classrooms and wondered how the staff do it, large numbers of children in very small classrooms with only one teacher per class. The upper classes simply have black boards separating them, making it incredibly difficult for noise control and yet the students and staff just get on with it! Yet the children were keen to show us what they are learning and are bright and have a love for learning.

The evening was the filled with celebration as we honoured the five graduates who Crown Church has personally sponsored. After seeing firsthand the area these kids grow up in, the daily challenges they must face where gun shots, food poverty and gang activity are a daily part of life, this is an incredible achievement for these five. North Street was incredibly proud of these pupils and so were we that we could share in their success and offer them hope for the future. (Continued on next page)

(Continued from previous page) We take education for granted, we take so much for granted. Saturday there was a health fair at the school, This was a free day offered to the community where children could get checked by the doctor, dentist and eye doctor free of charge: no free health care in Jamaica, they pray daily they will not get sick as they cannot afford treatment. We had the opportunity to be a part of this day by handing out the donations of school supplies to the children. The generosity of Crown Church allowed 230 children + to get a jotter, pen, pencil, eraser, and sharpener, again something so small to us but a nice treat for the children. Sunday was a day of celebration—180 years of North Street Church and celebrating the children/

teens who were getting scholarships this year. The theme of the day was moving forward in faith. North Street church has face tremendous challenges over the year, an earth quake, a hurricane and then the fire destroying the whole building and yet they remain, they rebuilt and now they move forward, continuing to be a beacon of light in a great area of darkness. North Street presented us with a Spirit of Hope Award which we will treasure. On Crown's behalf we presented North Street with a Celtic blessing plaque. Most presentations are straight forward, however this one was anything but. During mid-speech gun shots rang out just outside the church window, children of the community chasing each other down the street with guns. It was a tense, scary moment, I didn't know if I should proceed! Well I proceeded to give the speech and present the plaque, then we praised God together and had tremendous worship! Lena, Mairi, Pat and I were blessed to be a part of this service. The rest of the week was spent forming friendships and learning about Jamaica. (Continued on next page)

(Continued from previous page) We spent time at a villa, climbed a water fall, hung out in Bob Marley's house, visited the "wickedest city on earth", shopped at the craft fair, and had the world's fourth best ice cream in the world! We were treated like queens and have made friendships that will last a life time. We are very grateful for this trip and have come back wanting to help our friends in North Street more!! As we speak they already are making plans for their trip out here!!

An Adventurer’s Diary Extract Some adventurers from Young Crown recently joined others from across the Highlands on a weekend away near Aviemore. I managed to grab an extract from a diary; let’s take a look… Fri 22nd September 6:00pm Crammed on to the amply

spacious bus, stretch my legs out. Luxury! Why did I pack the full arsenal of hair-care

and accessories?! (I’m still sure I’ll need them, I just would love it if someone would

invent a single bag that can take all my stuff.) (Continued on next page)

(continued from previous page) 6:45pm We’re here! The place looks good, clean and comfy. Home from home. Got a room with some nice people and... bunk beds!?! AMAZING!!! 8:10pm Just sitting down to some Bible study. Wasn’t expecting the weekend to be one long, boring... Hang on, this is actually pretty good! I’d never thought about all of the adventures in the Bible before. 9:30pm This is the life. Cake and hot chocolate, activities done, only on day one… Bedtime? I’m totally going to fall asleep straight away.

Sat 23rd September 1:00am Shhhhh don’t tell anyone I’m still awake. I don’t think the leaders know... 8:15am Breakfast! I wonder what the day will bring. I think it’ll be a good one. 9:45am Second Bible study done. Again I wasn’t sure to start off with; yesterday might have been a one-off, but actually it was really good again – a guy called Peter time-travelled specially to tell us about when he met Jesus. Off to do ropes course now – excited but a little nervous. Hope the people doing archery have fun too!

(Continued from previous page) 12:45pm Lunch. I’m SOOOOOO HUNGRY!!!! Ropes course was amazing; I never thought I’d be able to do it but I managed – and I loved it! But I don’t have time to write just now, I have to go and get seconds. This food is AMAZING. 3:40pm The afternoon has been a bit of a blur to be honest; archery, games, mystery activity. So much going on but now we’re off to the sports hall. Can’t remember the last time I’ve done so much on a Saturday... 6:45pm Sorry for neglecting you a bit, dear diary, I’ve just been so busy. Games, tuck shop and dinner were so good. Bible study going on now: what is the church? Never realised that so many adventurers had so much to thank Jesus for. 10 lepers healed but only one said “thanks”? Makes me think…

8:30pm I finally have time to write lots in the diary – we’re supposed to be getting ready for bed! 9:15pm I don’t want to admit it but I am so thankful that we have been sent to bed! We are all SO TIRED but nobody wanted to say so. We have had a great day, rounded off by a great film night and hot choc. I really want to s... ... ... zzzzzzzzzzzz

Sunday 24th September 10:00am Breakfast done, and we’ve just done our talk, worship and prayer – it had it all. What do I think about what Jesus has done for me? Good question!... Now we’re getting ready for whole-camp activities… 11:15am BEST BIT OF THE WEEKEND! So good, I can’t believe they saved this until now. We get to pack all of our things up! BRILLIANT! 1:45pm Lunch was so tasty, I think I’m going to write to the Michelin man and recommend Adventurers’ Weekend for a star. Quiz done and we definitely won. No cheating or anything. 2:30pm SAD to be leaving Alltnacriche. MASSIVE THANKS to all of the leaders for making it such a great weekend. 3:15pm Just got home... and... ... Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Our New Defibrillator Thanks to the charity Lucky2BHere we have purchased a defibrillator; the first volunteers have been trained in its use and in how to conduct resuscitation. The defibrillator is located on a shelf opposite the pigeonholes in the short corridor leading to the Lower Hall. Please note that the defibrillator is reserved for

emergencies and should be left alone. As is evident from the photographs the training was excellent and was greatly enjoyed by everyone. We would like to see more people receive this training, including at least one person from each group or organisation using the premises. Details of the next training evening will appear on the church noticeboards in October. We are much indebted to Gordon Cameron for

this development. Bill Mein

ate mai Lucky2BHere was established in 2007 by Ross Cowie who had experienced a cardiac arrest and was lucky in that an ambulance was nearby on the evening of the arrest and was able to use lifesaving equipment in their possession. As a result of his experience he decided to raise funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Skye Camanachd Shinty Club in Portree. A committee was established to raise funds to buy a defibrillator for the social club and train people to use it. From these beginnings L2BH grew in a way that had not been predicted. Lucky2BHere is now a registered charity, with an elected committee and Trustees, run on a voluntary basis with many people offering their time and support. Initially Lucky2BHere provided defibrillators and emergency life support training on Skye and the immediate mainland. They now deliver this throughout Scotland.

Shoebox Appeal 2017

This year Crown Church will be filling shoeboxes specifically for teenage boys or older men. This is the demographic that Blythswood say they have a shortfall of each year. We welcome shoeboxes filled using the guidelines on the shoebox leaflet. The contents of a box for a older man should contain the usual hat, scarf & gloves along with soap/toothbrush/toothpaste/sweets and perhaps some hankies, socks, tools, shaving kit, notebook & pen or other extras. NEW items only please. I like to think about it this way - What would you like to see when you lifted the lid off your own shoebox, keeping in mind this would be your one and only gift you may receive all year Shoebox leaflets are available at the tables at church doors and back corridor. We will be accepting filled boxes and donations at the church from the beginning of October. Anyone is welcome to assist with the packing and checking of shoeboxes after the morning service on Sunday 22 October in the lower hall. Mairi Fraser
