President’s Letter

It has hardly felt like autumn in the past few weeks, but Fall is really here and the Elmhurst Artists' Guild Fall Members’ Show opened last Friday, September 29. Congratulations to all that participated and to those that won awards. Our gallery walls are graced with diverse, strong and imaginative work that combines to make a great show well worth seeing if you have not already. OCTOBER SPEAKER:

John Walker, Narrative Portraits

September 19, 2017 Elmhurst Art Museum Education Center 7:30 – 8:30pm Presentation Doors open 7pm Hospitality 7 – 7:30pm

John Walker will be discussing how he began working in his current imaginative realist style by combining traditional portrait and figurative painting with other interests like sculpting and woodworking. He will show some of his earlier pieces, illustration and airbrush work, and talk about how bringing all of these various pursuits together resulted in an entirely new body of work. He will follow up the presentation with a quick demo of his acrylic painting technique. Bio: John Walker’s work centers around a core of imagined narratives, as with his recent series of faux antiquities from an invented culture. Born in Aurora IL, he attended the College of DuPage and the American Academy of Art in Chicago before beginning a long career as an airbrush artist and illustrator. Much of his work is executed in a realistic manner that often includes elements of graphic design, stylization, and three dimensional objects. He has has won numerous awards including Best in Show at the Richeson 75 International Portrait and Figure Competition and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic Award at the 59th Annual NSPC&A Exhibit. His work has appeared in the “AcrylicWorks Best of Acrylic Painting” annuals, Spectrum art annual and Acrylic Artist magazine. He creates his fine art pieces and the occasional illustration project in his studio just west of Chicago. His website is www.WalkerBrushWorks.com for more information about him and examples of his work.

The Gallery is located on the North side of

Addison Trail High School

The Addison Center for the Arts is excited to announce abstract representational artist Wesley R. Baker and his traveling exhibit, “American Images”. The exhibit will be on display October 4 - 28, with an opening reception on October 6, 2017 from 7 -9pm. The exhibition will feature a diverse collection of abstract iconic American images, ranging from motorcycles and landscapes to Civil War and Native American themes, exploring current

and historical issues. Baker is a vivid story teller on and off the canvas. “The passion in these paintings is per-sonal. I strive to communicate experiences of life – joy, freedom, fear, grief,” explains the artist. Baker’s style is described as abstract representational. His paintings reflect centuries of inspiration, ranging from 19th Cen-tury impressionists to 20th Century symbolist and abstract painters like Gustav Klimt, Franz Kline and Chicago

Imagist, Ed Paschke. Some pieces in this exhibit were a part of a four-year traveling exhibition at the National Motorcycle Museum and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Baker explained, “Some of my paintings are about the wind in my hair and two wheels in mo-

tion. It’s unclear where the rider is going and whether the ride is free-spirited and joy-ous, or whether imminent danger looms ahead.” Learn more about the artist at www.wrbaker.com. Meet Wes Baker at an artist reception on Friday, October 6th from 7:00 - 9:00p.m. The exhibit will continue through October 28th. The gallery is located at 213 N. Lombard Road, Door #4, Addison, IL. As one of several countdown events to the Oak Park Art League’s 2021 centennial anniver-sary, Holiday One Hundred is both an art sale and fundraiser, designed to benefit community artists, art patrons and OPAL. This annual event will fea-ture the sale of original artwork by OPAL Artist Members, affordably priced from $50 to $300 for easy holiday giving. To boost awareness of OPAL and its Artist Mem-bers, Holiday One Hundred will be heavily pro-moted across the community through print ads and social media. Planned events include a Preview Party for a first-come-first-selection and

sale of artwork, plus Saturday hot chocolate events and extended gallery hours for two weeks in December. Holiday One Hundred benefactors go home with original artwork, support local artists and help the Oak Park Art League come closer to celebrating our Centennial Anniversary milestone!

Traditional to Contemporary: A Figure & Portrait Exhibition

Jan 12 - Feb 2

Opening Reception – Friday, Jan 12, 7-9pm

Judged Show - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention and People's Choice Awards

Drop off work Jan 6-10 | Pick up work Feb 3-7

Figure drawing, painting, and sculpting is a 97-year-old tradition at Oak Park Art League (OPAL) and in honor of this revered practice, OPAL presents its annual Figure and Portrait Exhibition. The scope of this call is broad, with goals for attracting works in all media that range from traditional portraiture to contemporary expressions of the human figure and form. All work will be accepted into this open call show for a nominal entry fee, with a two-piece entry limit. Unframed works on paper are permitted. Refer to exhibition guidelines for additional entry information and size restrictions.

The Elmhurst Artists' Guild was approached by Le Meridien Hotel in Oak Brook to partner with them in offering a Popup Art Ex-

hibit in their Hotel lobby every Tuesday evening from 6pm-8pm. While this will not be a sponsored EAG event, it offers our artists

exclusively the opportunity to show their work in a beautiful space to a new audience. Our board president took the opportunity to

display work on the first offered date, and found it to be a lovely space with a very friendly, accommodating staff.

This is a great opportunity if you are interested in getting your work out to be seen, and it is minimal effort and minimal time. The

hotel will be creating signage for us, advertising on line, and are working on creating display walls for our work; until the walls are

complete, easels will be needed to set up your work (if you need to borrow easels, don't hesitate to reach out and share with other

EAG Artists). You will be doing set up around 5:30pm, taking down after 8pm and you are welcome to do your own advertising

also.

To participate, please send images of your work, and your contact information, to the address listed in the attachment below. The

staff of the hotel will jury the work, and confirm the date you might be interested in. The dates for this year are:

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild has served the greater Elmhurst visual arts community since its founding in 1946. The Guild

exhibited its art at a local community center, creating the first “Elmhurst Art Museum.” In 1990, the Guild sold its property adjacent to Wilder Park to provide expansion for the new

Elmhurst Art Museum. We continue to meet at the Museum on the third Thursday of every month except June, July and August.

Sustaining Members: The Guild appreciates the support of our sustaining members and their commitment to the arts. We encourage our members to patronize Elmhurst busi-

nesses, and particularly our sustaining members who are listed here. Become a sustaining member and list your business here!
