Welcome to the 2017‐2018 Kansas City ASHRAE year!

The board and I would like to extend our professional organization beyond engineers and encourage more connectedness with cities, clients, architects, contractors, and students. Together we will help achieve ASHRAE Society President Bjarne Olesen’s theme for this year titled “Extending our community”.  His three main points of the theme being:  extend our global community; extend our technological horizons; and extend our value to members.

Many of us are familiar with Heart to Heart International, a humanitarian organization that aids millions of people in more than 60 countries, including the US, every year.

Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Gulf Coast, destroying homes and infrastructure in Texas, displacing tens of thousands of people, while injuring and or killing several more. Heart to Heart International (HHI) had a disaster response team and mobile medical unit deploy Friday, August 25th, from Kansas City to arrive in Texas ahead of the storm.

While HHI continues to provide free health clinics for thousands of hurricane victims in Houston, simultaneous preparations for Hurricane Irma have already begun. Prior to Irma making landfall, they are pre‐positioning a mobile medical unit, along with medical teams, medicines and supplies. They need our support more than ever.

Heart to Heart International (HHI) needs our help. Regardless if you wish to simply donate or volunteer your time by building hygiene kits for those impacted by the recent hurricanes.  www.hearttoheart.org

I'm looking forward to seeing you all out at our monthly meetings, and as always, we are open to feedback and suggestions on how we could improve things, what you would like to hear for a tech talk or even just venue suggestions; see you all in October.  When registering for the October technical tour, please consider sponsoring a student when you register.

      Student Activities

Student Night Our October 2nd meeting is Student Night. KSU, KU, and UMKC student chapters will be invited to our monthly meeting. We are very excited for the students to have the opportunity to participate in this tour. Please considerer sponsoring a student member. There should be an option when registering for the event to pay for a student member’s registration.  K‐8 STEM Outreach Have you visited a child’s, grandchild’s, niece’s or nephew’s school this year to talk about engineering? Have you participated in “Take a Child to Work Day”? If so, let me know! STEM activities are a good way to get young kids interested in our profession. We would like to recognize those individuals who have supported STEM activities. If anyone wants to present a STEM activity to any K-12 students and doesn’t know what to do, then please reach out to me and we will provide you with multiple activities. We will give you the instructions, supplies, and everything you need to get K-12 students excited about our profession. Please don’t hesitate to contact me, as I have a number of resources to help get students engaged. Annual ASHRAE High School Job Shadowing Program Shortly after the first of the year we will be coordinating our annual Job Shadowing program. Let me know if you or your company are interested in showing high school juniors and seniors what a profession in engineering or contracting entails. We will start to reach out to companies in October to see who would be interested. It is just a 2 hour commitment with 4-6 students.

Are you looking for quality Engineers, Contractors, or Sales Representatives involved in the ASHRAE community, but don't know where to advertise your job posting?

KC ASHRAE has a solution for you! A half page job posting can be advertised in the Breeze and on the website for a $100 RP donation (per posting, per month). Please contact Ann Peratt at [email protected] if you are interested in advertising in the Breeze and online.

Membership Promotion (MP)

Welcome to the following New Members! ‐ Tommy Anderson ‐ Ty Elley ‐ Eric Lovich

How do you ask your employer to support your interest in ASHRAE?

Seeking employer support for your membership in ASHRAE may feel like an awkward position to be in, but it doesn’t have to be. When you show interest in a professional organization it says you are serious about your career and want to grow professionally and personally.

Most employers are happy to support your desire for involvement in a professional society like ASHRAE. Many organizational leaders are members of quite a few professional societies themselves. They understand how important membership in a professional society has been to their own growth, and are usually happy to encourage others to take advantage of what professional memberships have to offer.

If you aren’t sure where your employer stands, why not ask? Here is an email you can copy and paste and suit to your own needs.

Sample Letter Requesting Employer Support for Renewing Members

Copy, paste, personalize, and send.

Dear <Manager’s Name>:

I received notification that my ASHRAE membership is due for renewal by <enter date>, and I am writing to seek your support of this membership.  My annual membership dues are $_______.

Membership in ASHRAE provides access to, and discounts on industry publications, as well as networking opportunities, continuing education courses, and much more. The benefits I continue to receive over the course of my membership are critical to my personal and professional development, and the work I do here at <company name>.

Please contact me with any questions. If you would like to learn more about ASHRAE, visit www.ashrae.org or email [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration.
