It is with great excitement that we announce that construction has begun on Marburn Academy’s new 64,000 square foot home in New Albany, Ohio! A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on September 27, 2015, and the actual construction began soon thereafter. The school will be located on 17 acres at 9555 Johnstown Road across from the Plain Township Fire Department and in the M/I Homes’ Windsor Development. The building’s exterior will reflect the Georgian architectural style for which New Albany is known, while the interior will feature state-of-the-art technology, adaptive classrooms, and an energizing design palette. The school is anticipated to open in late 2016, and at full capacity, will hold 350 students in grades 1-12. Currently, Marburn Academy occupies a building leased from Columbus City Schools, and it has a student body of 214 students in grades 2 through 12. Marburn Academy’s move involves a $14MM investment in land and development costs. The school’s current $3.4MM payroll will increase to $5MM when the new facility reaches maximum capacity. “Education is one of the foundational pillars of New Albany, and we are excited that Marburn Academy is choosing to locate here,” said New Albany Mayor Nancy Ferguson. “When their new facility is complete, even more Central-Ohio families will be able to benefit from Marburn’s unique educational environment.” Fundraising for the building began in December, 2012 with a $1MM cash gift from the Lbrands Foundation that spurred substantial investments from other corporate contributors, like the AEP Foundation, The Robert F. Wolfe & Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation, Daimler, and IGS Energy, as well as from numerous individual donors. Funds were also raised through several other efforts, including The Columbus Foundation’s The Big Give. In late spring 2015, Hexion CEO and Marburn’s Board Chair, Craig Morrison and his wife, along with United Titanium CEO and Marburn grandparent, Michael Reardon and his wife, issued The Chairman’s Challenge wherein they matched up to $1.25MM of all gifts given during a 45-day window. “Without the immense generosity of all of our donors, our vision for Marburn Academy’s future -- which includes the construction of our new campus in New Albany -- would not have become a reality,” said Morrison. “This has truly been a community-wide effort, with our donor pool consisting of corporations, foundations, individual donors, Marburn families and faculty/staff.” The Daimler Group will act as the Construction Manager of the new facility while Moody Nolan was commissioned for the building design. Huntington Bank is the banking partner. A construction loan was secured to move the project forward, but fundraising for the facility will continue.

“When their new facility is complete, even more Central-Ohio families will be able to benefit from Marburn’s unique educational environment.”

Fundraising for the building began in December, 2012 with a $1MM cash gift from the Lbrands Foundation that spurred substantial investments from other corporate contributors, like the AEP Foundation, The Robert F.

“This has truly been a community-wide effort, with our donor pool consisting of corporations, foundations, individual donors, Marburn families and faculty/staff.”

The Daimler Group will act as the Construction Manager of the new facility while Moody Nolan was commissioned for the building design. Huntington Bank is the banking partner. A construction loan was secured to move the project forward, but fundraising for the facility will continue.

What a spectacular night it was! Marburn is deeply grateful to its generous

corporate and individual sponsors, volunteers, and attendees—all who played a

vital role in the evening’s record-breaking success.

This year, we surpassed our “Gift of Learning” goal and raised an astonishing $80,000 in eight minutes! Funds raised from this energetic rally of support will

help extend our reach by providing direct scholarship assistance to qualifying

Marburn students so that they can access our unique educational offerings. As

evidenced by both the content and delivery of student speaker Michael Windon’s

speech, Marburn’s dedication to the academic and personal growth of each of its

students, as well as its supportive environment, helps them thrive.

The incredible support we received from our dedicated donors helps make

fulfilling our mission possible. Marburn’s ongoing success depends on

“people like you.”

THE “GIFT OF LEARNING” AT WORK“Marburn donors gave my son the greatest gift a mother could ask for, the gift of learning,”

Ricardo Watt’s mother, Ashley, expressed gratefully. Ricardo Watts is a vibrant Middle Division

student at Marburn Academy. Ricardo’s teachers describe him as a determined student who

truly values his education and the progress he is making. Known to ask for extra work to

practice his math skills, Ricardo is seen as a leader among his peers. He not only accepts his

learning differences, but also truly values those differences in himself as well as others.

This student that teachers proudly boast about is very different from the Ricardo Watts who

transitioned out of his previous school. Prior to Marburn, Ricardo struggled in school and could

not keep up with his peers. Despite his mother’s consistent efforts to get Ricardo additional

help, Ricardo’s previous school teachers continued to insist that he was “right on track.” But,

Ashley knew Ricardo was not even close to his full potential. Her persistence paid off when she

learned about Marburn Academy during a conversation with a Special Education teacher.

After visiting Marburn, Ashley knew Marburn would be a perfect fit for her son. Even though

Ashley knew her family’s finances were tight, she valued the education Marburn could provide

and proceeded to apply for Ricardo’s enrollment. Thanks to the support of Marburn’s generous

donors and to the Jon Peterson Special Needs scholarship, Ashley was able to enroll Ricardo at

Marburn. Ricardo’s confidence as both an individual and as a student has increased in just one

short year after coming to Marburn. “Now, Ricardo actually wants to be heard,” said Ashley.

Each year at our Annual Auction & Gala, attendees participate in a spirited scholarship auction

for our Gift of Learning Fund. This year, Gala attendees raised nearly $80,000 for student

scholarships. These vital scholarship dollars give students like Ricardo the opportunity to

receive an education tailored to their specific learning needs.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER UPDATE

The IRA Charitable Rollover is under consideration to be

retroactively renewed through the end of 2016. The passage

of this tax provision would allow individuals 70 1/2 or over to

exclude up to $100,000 from gross income for donations

paid directly to a qualified charity from their IRA. Married

individuals filing jointly may exclude up to $200,000

($100,000 from each individual’s IRA). We will keep a close

watch on the development of this Rollover and will send out

an alert via our Facebook page should laws change.

THIS ONLINE GIVING RALLY YIELDED BIG RESULTS FOR

MARBURN’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

ALUMNI UPDATE: BEHIND THE SCENES WITH JOE EGAN

Joe Egan entered Marburn in the first grade and attended for nine years. His education was entirely paid for by the

generosity of an anonymous donor who believed in Marburn’s mission and desired for students to receive an exceptional

educational experience designed to target their learning needs head on, irrespective of their financial status. Joe

transitioned out of Marburn Academy in 1993. After graduating high school, Joe moved to California to attend the

University of the Pacific in Stockton, majoring in Communications and Broadcasting. Upon graduation, Joe’s career

quickly progressed. E! Entertainment Television, MTV, TLC, NBC Universal, The Disney Network, The History Channel, and

National Geographic are just a few of the many networks for which Joe has worked. “If it were not for Marburn, I would

have never developed the skills I needed to pursue my dreams,” remarked Joe. “I will always be grateful for my Marburn

education, and I am thrilled that my niece and nephew had the opportunity to have a similar experience during Marburn’s

Summer School.” We are extremely impressed by Joe’s achievements and are proud to call him a Marburn Alumnus.
