As Co-Chairmen of this year’s Heart Walk, we want to personally thank you for your fundraising efforts. Because of your support, we raised more than $900,000 for heart disease-related research, education and programs in our community! We consider this an investment in our own future, as well as the health and well-being of our families and friends. And, at the same time, we are helping the thousands of patients and residents that we treat nationwide. In Mortenson Dental Partners, Kids Dentistree and Braces Braces Braces offices across the country, we care for many people who deal with heart-related issues. Because of this, we know firsthand the tremendous effect these diseases can have on patients, residents and their family members. Mortenson Dental Partners was the local Presenting Sponsor for the 2015 American Heart Association’s Kentuckiana Heart Walk. We know that by sup-porting the walk, we are promoting exercise as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease is our nation's No. 1 killer, claiming more than 930,000 American lives a year - more than the next five leading causes of death combined. You probably know someone suffering from heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular disease. Most of us do. To help these people - and to help protect our loved ones - we were proud to be involved. Thank you again for participating in this year’s event. This walk was a great way for us all to demonstrate the commitment of living a heart-healthy lifestyle. Regards, Dr. William Engilman Steve James Mortenson Family Dental

A very special thank you from our Heart Walk Chairmen, Dr. William Engilmen and Steve James

Lorie McIntyre

Since the lost of his wife in 2014, Bryan made a decision to change his unhealthy lifestyle. He has ridden himself of sleep apnea, lowered his blood pressure, and lost over 100lbs. But the biggest benefit has been his mental health—he is confident and no longer feels the need to use food as an emotional crutch.

In 2014 Jeff collapsed in Cherokee Park while training for a 5k run. A nearby nurse and EMS crew were able to stabilize Jeff. But after his collapse, Jeff underwent double bypass surgery. Since his surgery Jeff completed his first 5k last October and completed his first 10k a few days before the anniversary of his cardiac arrest. Now Jeff is helping others find their path to wellness.

Dawn started her lifestyle changes at work as a member in an office “Biggest Loser” contest. She decided to enhance her diet, exercise regiment, and set goals to reduce her need for blood pressure and blood sugar medication. Over the past 7 months, Dawn has lost 78lbs, reduced her blood pressure from “high” to “normal” and reduced her blood sugar levels to “normal”.

At the age of 40, Lorie weighed 300lbs and had a poor diet and exercise regimen. After being prescribed blood pressure medicine, Lorie decided to rid herself of the need for medication all together. It started with daily walks, and 6 years later she is a member of 2 gyms, an accomplished Triple Crown Marathon and Mini Marathon runner, and a total weight loss of 100lbs.

What is happening in kyana

New heart screenings for newborns The American Heart Association’s activity in Kentucky’s capital has led to heart healthcare starting at birth. A Senate Bill recently signed by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear now enforces newborn health screenings to include congenial heart diseases. Congenial heart diseases are the most common birth defect, and are found to be the leading cause of infant death related to birth defects. Of these screenings, pulse oximetry testing was included. The American Heart Association is making it a nationwide goal to include this low-cost, non-invasive newborn screening as a mandatory piece of infant healthcare before the child is released from the hospital for the first time. By including the pulse oximetry screening in hospitals statewide, Kentucky has increased the infant congenial heart disease survival rate about 85%. The American Heart Association is proud of Kentucky for their advances in heart health monitoring, and thankful for the support we receive from local community leaders. We hope to continue to push big-impact initiatives like these in Kentucky, Indiana, and beyond.

Anna Kaelin and Colt Cogan are congenital heart disease survivors who were crowned King and Queen of the Kentuckiana Heart Walk! We want to

thank Anna and Colt for your willingness to share your story of survival with the

community!

The American Heart Association has set its eyes on a new prize for Louisville and Kentuckiana: Healthy vending machines options. For the 2015-2016 Public Policy Agenda, the American Heart Association has added advocacy for healthy eating in and out of the home. A new initiative to raise Louisville Metro vending machine snacks to meet AHA, GSA, HHS and NANA guidelines is underway. This change would make a big impact in schools, public venues, the workplace, and more.

ABC, 123, CPR? AHA Aims to bring cpr into Kentucky high schools

With all the American Heart Association has done with previous fundraising dollars, what’s next? The answer? Educating all high school students on proper CPR executions. Over half of the United States has already implemented this standard into their high school health programs, and Kentucky is behind the ball. The state of Indiana recently added the policy, which took effect during the 2014-2015 school year. Indiana is also one of the select states in which this course is fully funded by the state, schools have no required dues to offer the training. The bill to enact this policy includes that students receive CPR and AED training, complete with a “hands-on” learning approach. Currently, the bill has been introduced to Kentucky’s lawmakers, and implementation is just around the corner. The American Heart Association has helped successfully incorporate this bill nationwide, and with a few states left, it’s crunch time!

This past year, the American Heart Association introduced a new program to the Louisville market: Teaching Gardens. As a tool to help educate youth in regards to nutrition, gardening, and cooking, Teaching Gardens offer a school the opportunity to let students grow while growing plants. All materi-als needed for the garden are provided by the American Heart Association, and the school has a designated Planting Day for all students! This year in Louisville, the American Heart Association introduced the Teaching Gardens to Goldsmith Elementary, and Brandeis Elementary. The two schools, after a spring and summer of planting, nutrition education, and students getting their hands dirty, recently celebrated with a Harvest Day Celebration. Both Goldsmith and Brandeis are also happy celebrate the Teaching Gardens because students who are healthy are proven to have higher academic performance.

Although the work can get a little dirty, it’s clear that the American Heart Association is making progress here in Louisville. We thank you for your donations, and hope to continue our local youth involvement with programs like Teaching Gardens.
