observe closely, we see how the smile on his face reflects God’s love, we marvel at his energy, and we hear of his consistent devotion to prayer. Personally, I think of prayer as an opportunity to have my own conversation with God. I’m sure we all pray in our own way and for our own reasons. I do know one thing – I don’t pray enough. The gospel of Matthew says, “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” This month we are given two special opportunities to pray together.

When Our Lady appeared to the three children in the town of Fatima, Portugal in 1917, she emphasized that we should pray the Rosary daily. This year will mark the 40th year of the Arizona Rosary Celebration for the Phoenix Diocese, which will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center on October 24th. Closer to home, Tucson will mark its 5th year of the Arizona Rosary Celebration, also on October 24th, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Our Most Reverend Bishop Kicanas will preside over this event. As in the past, our Council #10441 will carry the Knights of Columbus banner into the church, and all our council members are invited to participate.

On the evening of October 23rd a Holy Hour will begin the Arizona Rosary Celebration, starting at 6:00 p.m. at our own St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Immediately after the Holy Hour (approximately 7:15 p.m.) our council will host a dinner catered by Trattoria Pina. The cost is only $11 for the meal, and the reservation forms for the dinner are available on www.Azrosary.com with early reservations appreciated. The guest speaker is Reverend Dennis Billy.

I hope that you will strongly consider participating in one or both of these opportunities to pray and show your devotion.

Vivat Jesus,

Patrick

It has certainly been wonderful to have Pope Francis come to the United States for the first time and bring us his message of peace and love. Perhaps he did or didn’t address our concerns like we had hoped. But if we

about it. Wikipedia will tell you that it is ‘the trade of humans, most commonly for the purposeof sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others.’ It is spread throughout the world: developing countries, together with Eastern Europe and China, are the prime source; industrialized countries are the destination. According to http://soldnomore.org it also happens right here in Tucson.

We can let our reaction of horror at this “modern slavery” spur our prayer that it may beeradicated. In doing so, we join in sympathy for the victims and in hope for the families whohave, for now, lost loved ones. We pray that Jesus may be close to these unfortunate people, and to those who work to break up the trafficking cartels.

Finally, I must pass on to you some thanks. You will have prayed for the success of PopeFrancis’ visit to this country, perhaps using the prayer I suggested in September’s Chaplains Corner, the one composed by Archbishop William Lori. I met the Pope very briefly in Rome onthe day before he traveled to Cuba. As well as telling him that I was a Jesuit based in Tucsonwith the Vatican Observatory’s research group, I was able to add that the Knights of Columbus of my Council were praying for his visit. He replied with a smile, “Thank you. I need theirprayers.”

Let’s continue to pray for each other, for the victims of trafficking, and for Pope Francis.

SK Kelly and Mary Bequette are the Council #10441Family of the Month for October 2015. Kelly has alwaysbeen a strong voice of reason in the Council, and aKnight you can always count on to help. He is part ofthe Pancake Breakfast crew, has provided us withmany pictures of council events over the years, and isoften the first one to get the word out when a BrotherKnight needs prayers or assistance. Both Kelly andMary are very active at St. Thomas, with Mary serving aleadership position with the Marian Club and as aEucharistic Minister, while Kelly serves on the churchcouncil and as an usher at Mass.

~ Upcoming Events ~ Arizona Rosary Celebration ~ The Arizona Rosary Celebration dinner for the Diocese of Tucson is being hosted by our council on Friday, October 23rd. Please contact PGK Alex Wright [email protected] or GK Patrick McMahon [email protected] to volunteer your time for this event.

Harvest Moon Fall Fundraiser ~ The Parish-wide Harvest Moon fund-raiser for vocations will be held on Saturday, October 24th. We need several Knights to serve as adult beverage facilitators. Contact GK Patrick McMahon to volunteer and put “bartender” on your next resume.

Entertainment Books ~ Entertainment Books have arrived and we have already begun to sell these books. Our point of contact is Brother SK Bill Neer, and he can be reached at (520) 307-1606, and/or [email protected]. Please contact Bill also with your availability to help at our upcoming Pancake Breakfasts and/or Coffee and Doughnuts events after Mass. We won’t be selling Entertainment Books in the St. Thomas Courtyard again until November. Selling/purchasing an Entertainment Book can raise a great deal of money for our designated charities. I understand that each of us lives under varying economic constraints, but if every Knight who does have the resources buys an Entertainment Book, we would achieve our goals for charity very quickly. Unlike our Spring Raffle ticket sales, which we split with the State Knights of Columbus, all profits from the Entertainment Book sales go completely to our council’s locally designated charities. This effort must be supported by the entire Council to make it work. Thank you for your support!

Randy Hannon and Kelly Bequette keep a close watch on the grill. Those were some delicious brats we enjoyed for the All-Knighter on Friday, September 18th.

Our Chancellor SK Bill Neer is serious about selling you an Entertainment Book. Buy one now, or Bill will hunt you down! Bill is Council #10441’s project officer for the Entertainment Books this year.

T.K. Mohr and Bill Lake-Wright take their shift registering donors for the September Blood Drive at St. Thomas. Brother Steve Wood is one of our 43 donors in the background.

~ Lecturer Article ~ Marty Ronstadt

Mitochondrial Donation: Where’s the Harm?” by Jack Mahoney (February 2015), which appeared in the TABLET. We hope to have a couple of physicians to shed some light on the medical aspects of this new and complex subject. Looking ahead to November, we will cover the article on the Pope’s changes to the marriage annulment process. Hopefully, Father Jay can find time to mentor us again as he so kindly did in September. Both Fathers Chris and Paul will be away on Vatican Observatory business, but both will be back in December, and wish to take up Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ at that time. Thanks to our wonderful priests that add so much to our discussions as well as the growing number of wives and guests that shed light on the subjects from the women’s point of view. Thanks to Paul Federico and David Orr for setting up and taking down the Library meeting room.

Pancake Breakfast ~ Chairman Lloyd La Comb reports that the breakfast of Sunday, September 13th was a success with a near record of 156 breakfasts served. Lloyd says rising egg prices are an issue that we will need to monitor, since recent prices have tripled. We are supporting the children’s mass and our parish families, which is the most important reason for initiating the pancake breakfasts, which we began in 1991. Our next breakfast will be on Sunday, October 4th. Our faithful volunteer workers were Kelly Bequette, Ray Bruns, Charlie Farnsworth, Bob Gonzales, Randy Hannon, Bill Lake-Wright, Lloyd LaComb, James and Linda McKearney, Patrick McMahon, David Ramsower and Larry Rylance. Some workers also filled in at the blood drive, which was being held at the same time in the O’Leary Hall.

Red Cross Blood Drive ~ Our blood drive was another success with 45 pints of life-saving blood collected. This is the highest total since January this year, and up from the 33 collected at the last drive. We had 53 sign up via our narthex sign-up sheets, the Red Cross phone bank, the internet, and by phone. Of these, 16 donors did not show up, but 10 donors walked in, resulting in 47 donors. With the double-doubles, etc., we ended up with 45 pints. All this suggests the need for more sign-ups; hence the Red Cross will add another history booth at our next drive so we can hopefully increase our collections. We have finally convinced the Red Cross we need more slots on the sign-up sheets if we are to get back to our glory days of 40 to 60 pints. Increased sign-ups mean more blood donated. Our biggest blood drive was in July of one year - 100 pints in the middle of a hot summer no less. Our next blood drive will be November 8th. Thanks to our ever loyal workers Louis Attinasi, Tom Bohan, Kamal Dimitri, Paul Federico, Bob Gonzalez, Randy Hannon, Bob Kopas, Bill Lake-Wright, Larry Lewis, T.K. Mohr, Allan Reith and John Goshy. Thanks to all, but especially to those that went back and forth between the blood drive and the pancake breakfast. It was a wonderful spirit of cooperation with two events running at the same time!

Please remember Steve Newcomb, son of our Round Table member Richard Newcomb. Steve’s funeral mass was on Wednesday, September 23rd. May Steve rest in peace. Also, keep Richard in your prayers. His health is failing, but he continues to participate in our discussions despite all the obstacles that are in his way.

~ September Blood Drive ~

Knights Round Table ~ Our most recent Round Table on September the 12th was a success with over 30 attending and participating in the discussion. Father Chris and Father Paul were away on business, but Father Jay mentored our gathering. Father Jacek Buda, Dominican priest from the Newman Center, provided two very interesting perspectives. The topic was “Marriage in the Balance” and was about the Supreme Court decision redefining marriage between same-sex couples. Our October meeting will be on Saturday the 3rd at the usual time after the 8:00 a.m. Chapel Mass with coffee and doughnuts for all. The topic selected by Father Chris is “Ethics of”

~ Another Way We Protect Spouses ~

As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. We know today this is done through our insurance products which are designed with the goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today.

My wife, Anne Marie, and a fellow co-worker of hers attended a funeral service together for a colleague of theirs. It was the Catholic Vigil for the Deceased. As you know, there are some reassuring rites and prayers which take place. In addition to the Scripture readings, the deceased family members asked for a rosary to be included. After the service, Anne Marie and her trusted friend walked out together. He made a comment about how moving the service was, but added: I don’t get this infatuation Catholics have with Mary - it seems to be such a distraction from one’s relationship with Christ.

Since October is dedicated as the Month of the Holy Rosary, I think it just might be appropriate to point to some of the deeper realities of the Rosary. Candidly, I think many Catholics have allowed the Rosary to be devalued. Yes, it might be okay to bring the rosary out at funerals, but not as a matter of normalcy in personal homes and family life.

At first glance the Hail Mary prayer can appear to be primarily about Mary. It isn’t! It’s meant to focus one’s attention on Jesus. The first part of the prayer is taken from the angel Gabriel’s words, revealed in Scripture. Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with you, blessed are you among woman (Luke 1:28). These words are not a focus on Mary but on the wonder of heaven and earth. They are about the Incarnation taking place inside Mary’s womb. The repetition of the Hail Marys acknowledges above and beyond anything else the greatest miracle of history – the Incarnation.

In the center of the prayer, we speak (with reverence, I hope) the sacred name of Jesus – Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. In the last part of the prayer we entrust our lives to Mary’s intercession – Pray for us sinners… As I said, the Hail Mary is meant to lead us to Christ. We are asking Mary to pray for us as she prayed for herself – Let it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Pope Paul VI said – As a Gospel prayer, centered on the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation, the Rosary is therefore a prayer with a clearly Christological orientation.

I think it’s safe to say that many Catholics struggle with the value of the Rosary. I’d like to share a gift or two that was passed on to me in a time when I struggled with the Rosary’s value to my life. Don’t just say the Rosary, pray it! Announce each mystery and then visualize it. Reflect on the decade’s particular and unique mystery from Christ’s life. If you struggle with visualizing, look at an icon of the mystery to help center you on it. Even if you need to stop, take out your smart phone and Google the image.

~ Rosary Crisis ~ By Deacon Ed Sheffer

When you pray the Our Father, remember the Our! You aren’t praying alone and for your own self. You are praying with and for all Christians. In reconciling us to God, Christ reconciled us to each other.

I have said enough Rosaries with enough people to know that when we get to the Glory Be prayer it becomes even a faster race. Slow down with the Glory Be! The Glory Be is meant to be the highest point of our contemplation. In this prayer, we praise God for his becoming man and dwelling among us, for his death that conquers sin, for his resurrection which gives us new life, and for his ascension to the Father and sending the Holy Spirit.

By the way, the beads aren’t just there so we don’t lose count. The beads deliberately converge on a crucifix, which represents the beginning and the end point of the Rosary – life is to become centered on Christ.

Saint John Paul II reminded us in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae that the Rosary is a prayer loved by countless Saints and that the Magisterium has not diminished its value, for the Rosary can lead to God’s holiness. I believe there is a Rosary Crisis. It is wrongfully devalued and those who have said it conflicts with the Liturgy miss the point of the Rosary and for whatever reason have not been drawn into a deeper relation with Our Mother. Mary was given the fullness of grace because she would cooperate fully with that grace and be the perfect mother of Jesus. To say the Rosary is to open one’s self up to the grace which Christ won for us by the mysteries of his life, death, and resurrection. Bead after bead we ask Mary to pray for us that we might be drawn closer to her son. The Rosary is still one of the evangelizer’s greatest tools. As Pope Francis tells us, the Rosary is a school of prayer. The Rosary is a school of faith.

The topic selected by Father Chris is “Ethics of”

Bill is Council #10441’s project officer for the Entertainment Books this year.

observe closely, we see how the smile on his face reflects God’s love, we marvel at his energy, and we hear of his consistent devotion to prayer.

But if we
