A Message From The Director
The State of the Center This October marks the end of my seventeenth year in service to the seniors of Washington Heights and Inwood and five years as your Director. Our program has experienced such wonderful growth over the past twelve months that I feel it only appropriate to offer up this review. Our meals continue to be the highlight of the Center, with nutritious, varied and fresh lunches prepared with love by our own Yehuda Levy. Our Crafts Program produces high quality results that our clients are proud to wear and use. From beading, to calligraphy, to pottery painting, along with hot/cold packs and cutlery caddies - our projects are becoming legendary. Our Wellness Program received a big boost this year, with generous additional funding from The Allen Hospital. Thanks to their grant, we were able to add a Zumba Gold class this summer, which packed the house. Due to popular demand, we will be continuing Zumba throughout the year. We were also able to add a second monthly massage therapy session, in order to better accommodate the increasing interest. We also began a nutrition/cooking class, run by the very personable and knowledgeable Erica Vinas, who is a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator. Of course, Walking club, Chair Dancing, Pilates, Fit n Fun, Tai Chi and Yoga continue to be offered on a regular basis. In order to explore alternate paths to wellness, we’ve added Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes and Aromatherapy workshops. With the help of generous funding by Gemiluth Chessed of Greater New York, we’ve been able to run a fairly robust Trip Program again this year. We have visited the New York Botanical Garden twice—once for the Train Show and once for the Peony Show. We enjoyed the World of Wings butterfly exhibit, along with trips to the Helena Rubinstein Exhibit at the Jewish Museum and the Woman In Gold exhibit at the Neue Galerie. We rounded out the year with an exclusive tour of the rooftop bee garden at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel. More trips are already in the works! Our Parties and Concerts are not to be missed. We had six musical shows this year in an eclectic range of styles - Yael & Yili: guitar/flute duo, Dueling Pianos, L’amore Della Musica: woodwind quintet, Scandia Symphony Quartet, Lucky Chops Brass Band and Darius Kaufmann’s World Music Show. The Choir of KAJ entertained at our Thanksgiving Luncheon and our Chanukah Party featured a five foot menorah ice sculpting demonstration. Our Pre-Purim Masquerade and Magic Show was the highlight of the year with a Roaring Twenties theme that rocked the house. Our always patriotic July 4th party was also a rousing affair. All this is in addition to our wonderful “in-house” Music Man, Cantor Eric S. Freeman, who in addition to providing musical entertainment at many of our functions, runs our monthly Music Mondays. 160 eligible Moriah Seniors received a $20 Farmer’s Market Coupon Booklet at the Center to help defray the high cost of fresh produce. As in past years, Moriah is coordinating a Free Flu Clinic at the Center this month. Over 100 seniors will have the opportunity to receive the vaccine in a safe, convenient and familiar environment. While all this may look easy, I must tell you that it is only because Moriah’s amazing staff makes everything LOOK easy, that Moriah has risen to such a high level of service. What would Moriah be without Chani? On a daily basis, she steps out of the confines of her job description to pitch in at every opportunity, lending her incredible organizational skills and astute viewpoint to all facets of the Center. Ruthy, continues to be a friendly face to clients seeking issues in all aspects of case assistance. Clients are taken in by her warmth and discretion in addressing their issues. They are drawn to the care she takes and the personal touch she brings to resolving their problems. Ruthy is proficient in finding all eligible benefits due to our clients. Feel free to approach Ruthy and let her assist YOU!
And let’s not forget all of YOU! Your thoughtful input, gentle encouragement, generous donations and warm expressions of appreciation touch our hearts and spur us on. Here’s to another wonderful year ahead!
Looking forward to greeting you personally at the Center and partnering with you in its continued growth,
Shuli Gutmann

They all thought he was gone. But he was alive and trapped inside his own body for ten years. In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, age twelve, fell inexplicably sick. First he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months he was mute and wheelchair bound. Martin's parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live. Martin was moved to care centers for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents' marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought. Ghost Boy is the heart-wrenching story of one boy's return to life
through the power of love and faith. In these pages, readers see a parent's resilience, the consequences of misdiagnosis, abuse at the hands of cruel caretakers, and the unthinkable duration of Martin's mental alertness betrayed by his lifeless body. We also see a life reclaimed, a business created, a new love kindled - all from a wheelchair. Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for others.
