Message from the President
I am honored to just be an active member of theAmerican Academy of Gold Foil Operators. Tobe President of an organization that can traceits heritage back to dentists of the caliber ofGeorge Ellsperman, Gerry Stibbs, Lloyd Baum, and Richard V. Tucker , to name a very few, ishumbling indeed.
This is the premise of my thoughts as I take onthe responsibilities of this position. A smallgroup of people can change the course ofevents in a society or a profession; eitherpositively or negatively. I believe we are at apoint in our profession where small changescan and are making big differences.
We can be the impetus for positive change, orwe can stand aside and allow the viruses ofcomplacency and self-interest to invade ourprofession and destroy it.
In a larger sense, most if not all of the issues weface today are symptoms of a larger problemwe face as a society. The attitude that I shouldnot have to sacrifice anything to get what I want,it is my right!
There is a generation that seems to have lostthe understanding that true success comesthrough work, sacrifice and taking responsibilityfor one’s own actions.
Put another way; “Service is a virtue thatdistinguishes the great from others. It is thedividing line that separates the two groups ofthe world; those who help from those whohinder, those who lift from those who lean, those who contribute from those who onlyconsume. To give encouragement, to impartsympathy, to show interest, to banish fear, tobuild self-confidence and awaken hope in thehearts of others, in short to love them and showit, is to render the most precious of gifts.”
Stephen Covey; First Things First.
Our profession has never needed this example, which can be set by the members of theAmerican Academy of Gold Foil Operators, more than it does today.
The art of placing the gold foil restoration needsto be reintroduced within an ethical based, patient centered dental school curriculum.Whether a student ever places a foil restoration, after graduation, is not the issue. The gamechanger is the fact that by being required tolearn this one technique the student is exposedto discipline and elegance at the same time andin the process the skill level, of the student, isincreased in all disciplines.
Therefore, I make this challenge to themembers of the American Academy of Gold FoilOperators. Use your considerable influence toencourage the reintroduction of the teaching ofgold foil in dental schools. Be prepared tovolunteer to help with these programs andalways be a role model for excellence to alldentists.
Dan B. Henry DDSAAGFO President 2014-15

Insurance is a BenefitAnd other Musings
It has been an honor and privilege to serve aseditor of The Gold Leaf for the past several years. My predecessor, Dr. Allan Osborne late of thebeautiful isle of Vancouver outside Victoria hasserved as an inspiring mentor and role model. Iwanted so much to see him knighted for the rolehe has played in dentistry and have pursued thisaccolade on his behalf on numerous occasions;however, have been unsuccessful so far. Dr.Osborne provides, as do so many of ourmembership, the rare combination of leadership, tenacity, and a shared love of devotion to hisprofession. In fact we saw during my brief tenurethe passing of so many of our beloved andesteemed members, it seems only fitting tomention them here.
When Allan and I worked together, we produceda version of The Gold Leaf that was handassembled and hand stamped and mailedindividually. It was a real challenge to bring ourpublication to its current electronic as well as‘snail mail’ version. I especially wanted to conveythe excellence of our members’ operations underoften less than desirable conditions. Themeetings, whether on a local, national orinternational basis are attended with camaraderie, conviviality and a certain joi-de vie. It was mymission to capture as much of that as possible.
The use of four color separation was often asource of frustration due to the pixilation that sooften accompanied a file size that was deemed bymy artistic support as rather large to sendelectronically. We experimented with differentcompression techniques but it will remain forfuture editors to solve this conundrum to ensuredelivery of the highest quality work which sodefines and represents our fine Academy.
Though our small journal chronicles thehumanistic side of our meetings andaccomplishments, it was always my intent toinclude the work and thoughts of the manyscientific presenters which contribute to ourunderstanding and expertise. From the time ofthe 1950’s and 1960’s, the writing has usually
trended toward editorial in nature vs the citedpeer reviewed progeny we now have in thebrilliantly executed and published periodical: Thejournal of Operative Dentistry; a work of amazingcoordination and superb interdisciplinarycooperation. I must mention my colleague andmentor, Dr. Michael Cochran, his right hand staffDr. Tim Carlson, Kevin Matis and now Dr. JeffPlatt… I would be remiss if I did not also mentionthe third editorial leg of our seat of excellence andcaring: The Lineangle, edited lovingly by ourfriend and colleague: Dr. Barbara Young. Theircombined attention to all of the scientific andbusiness details is both inspiring and humbling.
Visions for future editorial content include:enhanced video clips of meeting content: socialas well as clinical. Scientific citations andhyperlinks for content and further analysis… inaddition, live interactive real time scheduling ofmembers’ forums to get encourage discussion, and areas of mutual concern. At that point, ourjournal becomes a living thing not just an archivalrecord of past events. To breathe life into suchan effort will require the support of all ourmembers, as well as leadership from the editorialfront lines.
It is this attention to the smallest detail and focuson excellence I will mention finally. Ourprofession has come under the blanket scrutiny ofthe ‘payer establishment’ who have used our ownhard won science in a game of one upmanship asit applies to the Evidence Based Medical model. Our philosophy and methods often don’t simplyapply to something like say, first pass biliarykinetics and unknown little white pills… decadesare required to provide the kind of evidence weneed to defend our position. As for double blindstudies, what ethical provider would subject apatient unknowingly to an unknown course oftreatment? What patient would accept anunknown course of treatment? It goes withoutsaying, this plays right into the wheelhouse of thepayers who want to deny payments for ‘unproventreatments’ or ‘those of dubious clinical efficacy’…for the very subscribers they purport torepresent; this deny and delay tactic is certainlynot in any one’s best interest other than their own.

Dr. Terry Donovan’s excellent presentation(Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry Vol.16 pages 194-204 May 2004) of Dr. Tucker’swork (A Restorative Clinical Evaluation of 1341Cast Gold Restorations) is an excellent case inpoint… again, it involved several decades andshowcases the beauty, durability and longevity ofgold restorations. It is this brand of evidence thatwill ultimately exonerate and validate the clinicaldecision making we all face on a daily basis.
As I wrap up my tenure as your editor, I want totake the time to thank you all for your patienceand understanding as we have forayed into theelectronic age and beyond. The journey hasbeen and will continue to be exciting withhopefully many of the aforementioned changes.
So, to all of my colleagues: stay strong, fight thefight, and continue to serve your fellow man withgrace and humility. Dr. Scott Barrett, pastPresident AAGFO, has served dutifully aswebmaster and now interim editor. His is the bestkind of corporate knowledge and support. Heknows and honors our heritage. He is laserfocused on our mission and our future. I knowwhat we espouse will continue because itrepresents the highest form of truth and justice inour small corner of the universe. Again, thankyou so much for this opportunity to have servedas your editor…

Behind the scenes she works diligently puttingtogether a power point presentation. Gloria isadept at organizing the title slides, pre-operative, and post-operative images. Oncecompleted she sits back and quietly evaluatesthe results. For many years Gloria has been responsiblefor helping Wendell and all of the operatorslook good. We are fortunate to have Gloriainvolved in our program. We can't thank herenough for all the time she has spent in thiscapacity for the Academy.

2014 Distinguished Member Award
Dr. Barry O. EvansPortland, Oregon
In presenting this year's Distinguished MemberAward to Dr. Barry Evans, we could begin by talkingabout the definition of the word “distinguished”,which means “to be made conspicuous byexcellence”. Dr. Barry Evans exemplifiesconspicuous excellence in several areas of hiscareer and life and this award acknowledges him forhis skill as a gold foil operator and hisaccomplishments and service to this organization
Dr. Evans' commitment to his profession can beseen in his long term membership and participationin several dental organizations, in which he has heldseveral offices. He is a member of the Academy ofRestorative Dentistry, the American College ofDentists, a Fellow in the International College ofDentists and a Fellow in the Academy of GeneralDentistry. He is a Past President of the Academy ofRV Tucker Study Clubs, Past President of theAmerican Academy of Gold Foil Operators,Immediate Past President of the Associated FerrierStudy Clubs and currently serves as Treasurer ofthe American Academy of Gold Foil Operators. Hehas been a long term member of 7 different studyclubs and has mentored 4 study clubs. He haspresented numerous essays, table clinics andpapers and was honored as AAGFO OutstandingClinician of the Year in 2007.
Dr. Evans was a member of the Seattle RV TuckerCast Gold Study Club for 33 years, where he honedhis skills in cast gold restorative work. He has beena member of the Alex Jeffery Study Club since 1983and has had a venerable list of mentors, includingDr. Dick Tucker. Dr. Evans has been heard to saythat what makes him a good dentist is “bulldogdetermination” and where this can be seen timeafter time is in the work he accomplishes in studyclub. There is no better example of what“distinguished member” means than the example a
clinician like Dr. Evans sets; working withconcentration, diligence, humility and respect for hispatients to create beautiful, long-lived restorationswhich set a standard of excellence for his fellowstudy club members to follow. His roles as studentand mentor are of one piece and he is above all, aconstant learner. A common thread which unites therecipients of this award is that in addition to havingsuperlative clinical skills which their fellow dentistsemulate, they are all natural teachers by virtue oftheir ability to generously share information withtheir fellow clinicians.
Dr. Evans practices in Portland, Oregon where hecontinues to be an influence in Oregon dentistry withhis involvement and support of OHSU School ofDentistry. Barry and his wife Yvonne have twochildren, Arianna and Bryce (who is also a practicingdentist in Seaside, Oregon) and four grandchildren. In acknowledging how important family support is toall of us in our dental careers, Barry shares thisaward and the admiration of his fellow AAGFOMembers with his wife Yvonne. Thank you, Barry, for all you do for us!
