THIS MONTHS PROGRAM: Wendell S. (Woody) Minnich Cacti and Succulents for the Greenhouse and Garden This presentation is an introduction to a general assortment of the cacti and other succulents that we can grow in our greenhouse and/or garden. Succulents (all cacti are succulents) are an amazing group of plants that vary in size, shapes, textures and colors. Coming from almost all regions of the world, there are many different habitats and thus many different conditions these plants require. We will address the regions, commonly deserts, where these plants occur. Once one understands the natural habitat of a specific succulent species, it becomes much easier to give that plant the conditions it needs. Thus, meeting the requirements of each taxon helps to make cultivation more successful. Succulent by definition means full of water. All succulent plants have developed a specific water storage mechanism to help them survive through extreme drought or in environments where moisture is seldom available. This water storage is generally found in one or more of three parts of the plant. Some succulents store their water in the leaves and others store their water in their stems, while many will also store their water in their roots, trunks or tubers. To understand your plants and to grow them well, one must know why they have their particular types of water storage. The world has many deserts and Mediterranean like climates or environments. These areas are where the great majority of our succulent plants can be found. We will visit and see some of the species that occur in such deserts as the: Atacama, Chihuahua, Colorado, Kalahari, Mojave, Namib, Sahara and Sonora. We will also visit regions rich in succulents that are not considered deserts. These regions often have special times of drought thus requiring that many of the plants be succulent. Some of these regions include: parts of the Andes (Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru), parts of Brazil and the USA, as well as Madagascar and Socotra. The commonality of all of these regions will be our guide to the successful cultivation of so many of the cacti and other succulents that we wish to grow. The fun part is selecting the plants that we find most attractive. Learning to grow these favorites becomes the next step. When or when not to water, where to grow and what each plant needs (light, heat, atmosphere, soil) is the hard part. At our homes we each have our own special micro environments. The secret is, we must find the ways to create niches or adapt or modify our home (greenhouse - garden - windowsill) to meet the needs of the plant(s.) Once one understands the natural environmental requirements of each species, growing them at your home can become fairly easy. Like all good things, it does take some work and education! Woody Minnich will provide the raffle table this month & will also bring very nice & hard to find plants to sell. Everyone please bring boxes. *Reminder to Dianne Van Order (snacks) & Pam Fish (drinks), this is your month to bring refreshments. *Reminder, we will be meeting in Greenwood #1 which is in the very front of the building.

PLANT OF THE MONTH: This month we will be talking about Aloe for succulents. We will discuss where the plants come from, what kind of temperatures they can handle & how to care for them. If anyone has the plants that we will be talking about please bring in one of yours to share with the rest of us. We would like to get volunteers to talk about a plant of the month & you will get to pick which family (genera) to talk about. Please contact Brian Poot if you would like to volunteer.

2014 CLUB BOARD MEMBERS: (Proposed) The vote will take place this month. President: Roelyn Poot Vice President: Diane Van Order Treasurer: Lori Mace Secretary: Pam Fish Board Members: Steve Roberts, Maybelle Abplanalp & Dawn Dalyce

A REMEMBRANCE OF TED HEATH: It was learned by a few of our club members that a dear club member, Ted Heath passed away a couple of weeks ago. Ted and his precious wife, Rosemary have been members for about 13 years. They were faithful club members for most of those years until Ted's health wouldn't let him make those long evenings out to Stockton from Walnut Grove. Ted, a gentle man, had collected a very nice sum of plants during those years. He and Rosemary enjoyed caring for them and showing them to us board members when we would be at their place for a board meeting. Bill and I had a very nice Sunday afternoon visit with both Ted and Rosemary about ten weeks ago. We just know how lost Rosemary will feel without Ted. She cared for him so lovingly. A card of condolences was sent to Rosemary by our Sunshine Lady, Trudy Spahn. We commend Rosemary and her family to our Heavenly Father for comfort and strength. Sincerely, Roelyn Poot MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: by Roelyn Poot COUNTRY STORE REPORT Thank you to all of you who so generously brought various items for our annual Country Store. Many thanks to all of you ladies who took the time to prepare treats and jellies, etc. They were delicious. The raffle brought in $304.00 and the silent auction proceeds came to $222.10.This grand total of $526.10 put us around $200.00 over last years results. Many thanks to Barb Coelho for taking care of organizing the event and to all the callers of the evening. The board wishes to thank all of you for supporting the club by buying such a large amount of tickets which helped the evening to be such a great success! CHRISTMAS DINNER GUESTS As in the past, the club treasury will be paying for half of each club members dinner. If some of you who would like to bring your spouse who is not a dues paying club member then you will need to pay the full price of the dinner for your spouse. Please check with Lori Mace, our Treasurer if you are not sure how you signed up as a club member. Thanks so much! PLANT PROTECTION! There is a chill in the air in the early mornings which is a reminder that we all need to be thinking of how we are going to protect our winter sensitive plants. October is the best time to be moving potted plants onto the patio, close to the house. The plants in the ground can be covered with burlap, old bed sheets or old towels. There also is a frost cloth that can be purchased if you would like. If you are not sure about some of your plants, take a picture and bring it along to the club meeting. You can ask Bill or Brian Poot or Barb Coelho for advice. May your plants have a safe winter! A CLUB POSITION TO CONSIDER! Trudy Spahn, our Sunshine Lady gave me notice that she and her husband will be looking for a place to live in the state of Oregon in the next month or so. Trudy will finish out the year for us. Anyone who is interested in taking over the position for Trudy can speak with a board member, soon! The person who takes over this position is responsible for mailing out birthday cards to each of our members and any other cards the board feels is important. The club treasury pays for the cards and stamps. Trudy will have left over supplies to give to the next volunteer. It would be good to have a name by the evening of the Christmas dinner, so Trudy can be relieved of her responsibilities. Thanks for your consideration! Trudy, you will be greatly missed for indeed you always were our sunshine. We wish the best for you, your husband and your dear family. It will be wonderful to be closer to your daughters and their families. Thanks for doing such a fine job for our club!

OUR ROAD TRIP: by Kathy Zumbrunn When Barbara Coelho and I heard Woody Minnich would be speaking at the Sacramento Cactus Club meeting, August 26, we knew we had to go. After discussing it, we invited Dianne Van Order and Carol Jo Hargreaves to join us in a daylong adventure. Barbara and I headed to Manteca to pick up Carol Jo and took time to check out her new succulent garden. Carol Jo had collected many plants from SCSS meetings and had acquired some more at local stores. She designed the area and had a local landscape team prepare the ground and install large rocks and a watering system. Both Barbara and I agreed it turned out very nice! We then drove to Dianne’s in Stockton and took a quick tour of her garden and home. Dianne lives in a darling little house and has a fabulous garden! She is very creative, and has filled her yard with homemade garden art as well as unique planters made from repurposed items such as cowboy boots, shutters, and even a rowboat! We didn’t have enough time to check out each nook and cranny and will have to go back for a longer and more thorough look!

The four of us then headed north to Galt to visit Ron and Leona Harris and check out their wonderful greenhouse. Ron and Leona have gorgeous show plants and a fabulous greenhouse. We visited with them, took a tour and then headed toward Sacramento. Our next stop was Cascade Rock. The four of us crammed into the tiny office and ooh’d and aah’d over all the wonderful top dressings displayed there. I am sure the clerk thought we were all batty old gals but we had a blast and ended up buying a carload of bagged goodies, plus some gorgeous, decorative rocks from Utah! In downtown Sacramento we met up with members of the Sacramento Cactus Club (and the Poots!) for dinner at the Original Mel’s Diner. Woody was there and we all had a great time visiting.

After our tummies were stuffed, we went to the Shepherd Garden and Art Center to attend the SCC meeting and listen to Woody’s wonderful presentation on “The Great American Southwest.” As usual, it was a

wonderful presentation, well worth the trip to Sacramento. The four of us even had our photo taken with Woody! It was a very long day, but we all had

a lot of fun being together and enjoying each other’s gardens. Woody is going to be the guest speaker at our Stockton Cactus and Succulent Society meeting Thursday, October 24. This will be his first visit to SCSS. I hope all of you take advantage of this opportunity and come to meet Woody and enjoy his wonderful presentation this month. You won’t be sorry!
