A Season of the Word in Carrigrohane Now that I’ve been here almost 12 Months, it has been great to see through the changing seasons of the Church year and also the calendar year, so recently, welcoming visitors on their summer Holidays from all around the world. Each season of the year poses an opportunity for a new beginning, a fresh start. With Autumn now upon us there has been a new start for lots of things in the parish, we are rolling out our newly defined Identity, Purpose and Value statements within the parish and throughout our Bible Study and Growth Groups we are looking afresh at the Word of God and providing new ways for our parishioners to engage with the Bible in their homes as well as in discussion Groups. Across the parish we have launched a new initative – E100 … The Essential 100 Challenge - a Bible reading programme for 20 weeks looking at key texts from Genesis to Revelation backed up with daily emails & a website for parishioners who wish to go deeper. The grounds of Blarney Church have a “Time out Trail” for any visitor who wishes to read some passages from the Book of Psalms, which are placed in various areas and which it is hoped will be another way which people will engage with these ancient words. Members of the parish who are involved in various ways with teaching whether in Youth Groups, Bible Study / Growth Groups or Preaching were treated to a very challenging and informative day on 31st August when former Rector of Carrigrohane, Revd William Olhausen came to deliver a workshop entitled the “Living Word”. What a resource we hold in our hands Sunday by Sunday … Ancient words ever true. As I write we are aware of the importance of the Word and certainly, as we approach the ordination of a Priest in the Cathedral in September I have been reminded of the solemn vows which I made in my ordination… that of expounding the Scriptures, being diligent in reading holy Scripture, upholding the truth of the Gospel. In this season we are excited about kids experiencing God’s word Sunday by Sunday in our kids groups, families sharing together monthly in our Messy Church, Teenagers exploring faith through Youth Alpha, young adults through table talk, our adults through E100, Bible Study and Alpha as well of course what happens in our churches through regular teaching in our Sunday services. It is great to see what God is up to here in Cork through the power of the Holy Spirit. Robert

The Techshed Men: Don't let your kids show you up!

Technology moves so fast that it seems hard to stay up with it! Digital cameras, tablets, facebook, twitter, let alone Gimp or Ubuntu! Guys, come along starting Saturday, October 5th, 10am-12noon at the Parish Centre for a bit of fun, learning and serving at our new experiment. We call it The Techshed, a monthly place for men to hang out together, mess about with computers, learn about some of the new technology around creating something useful for something going on in the parish or community and, after Christmas, venture out on trips to tech orientated locations around Cork (e.g. air traffic control, marine research centre, etc.). Bring your own laptop if you have one, some extras will be available. Invite your non-parish friends along too so we can connect with our communities! For more information contact Bill 4874055.

Glow Max - youth café & hang out space for young people in secon-dary school, from 7.30-9.30pm in the Parish Centre, Carrigrohane – aiming to be accessible for young people who do not go to church so a good place for Christian teenag-ers to bring their friends. We have pool, table tennis, darts, hang out space, music and a café. We also have a short talk called Centrepoint when we think about life and God. October 18, November 29.

Just a reminder... Glow – a youth group for children in 4th-6th class in national school, from 7-9pm in the Parish Centre, Carrigrohane – aiming to be accessible for kids who do not necessarily go to church. We do lots of differ-ent activities like sports, games, cooking, arty things and the Wii. We also have a short talk called Centrepoint when we think about life and God. October 25, November 22.

A few points from the sermon series...

Ian’s Talk (Ephesians 3:20-4:16) - Key points from Robert At the United Celebration in September Ian launched our series of sermons based on the book of Ephesians and reminding us what the Vision Development Group were doing—and the tremendous work and ministry which was happening in our parish already—whilst also realising we cannot do this in our own strength. He reminded us that the letter to the Ephesians stands as a reminder to the church that it is not marginal to the world—it is central to the way God is reaching out to the community and to the nations. We were also reminded about the priority we need to place on prayer and interces-sion, to create what Jeff Weiner, CEO of Linkedin calls ‘bufferzones’ - time blanked out in our diaries in our day to think and reflect. Ian concluded by challenging us to have a 3D vision: • To journey in one Direction • To be a journey of Diversity • To be on a journey of Discovery.

Robert’s Talk (Ephesians 2.1-10) - Key points from Matt IDENTITY – ‘To be centred on the life and teaching of Jesus.’ This statement is a firm foundation. We value this statement, through house groups, personal reflection and Sunday teaching, centring ourselves on Jesus’ teaching and modelling life is a strength here that we can build on. Like a stick of rock with a print all the way through, Jesus’ life and teaching has too come through all we do, otherwise – why bother! Our challenge is for this to be in place – For our own ‘centring’. - Our own Church today.

Matt’s talk (Ephesians 3.14-19) - Key points from Ian IDENTITY - To grow in his love together / To express his love in action We have done this before, but it remains valuable because what one generation neglects to teach, then next forget, and the third deny. We are; Strengthened and in-dwelt: This is God’s work in us. As a result we: Root and ground ourselves in Love. (With the picture of a plant remaining rooted to fulfil its potential growth) As we live out of this love we begin to grasp Christ’s Love. Hard to love others you are not meeting with, a solo-Christians faith will be missing something. We will be different from each other and the church should reflect this and work at building relationships, to be a healthy and growing church…So that we are filled up with the measure of God’s fullness. The identity of the Christian is to be filled with God. So that our churches are centred on the fullness of God, with space for others to be welcomed, and where love in action to each other is displayed, and also reaches out to those outside our doors.

A Growing Appetite—Lunch Club for Seniors

The recent gathering of the lunch for seniors drew over 20 to taste the wonderful fare. It underlines how this ministry has its place, meeting the needs of many, especially those who live alone. It is also a space for people of all backgrounds to meet—not just our church members. It gathers once every two months at the moment—just six times a year. To continue to whet these growing appetites, we simple need more cooks and helpers. You may feel you can’t attend but can cook. But this is no problem, you could prepare a meal (or part of it!) at home and drop it in, or we can arrange delivery. If it helps, we also pay the expenses for the cost

of the food. If you simply want to assist, by setting up tables, prepara-tions in the kitchen, or clearing up—all these would be really appreciated. If you can help with this wonderful ministry of grace, please have a word with Laurel Watts (4871550) or Patsy, who is taking a back seat at this stage, but is more than happy to answer questions (4877260). Thank you.

Sympathy— Our thoughts and prayers have been very much with Patsy & Robert Devoy and their family on the death of Patsy’s father, Jack, in Huntingdonshire, England. Richard Wood, the first person to welcome the Devoys when they came to Carrigrohane, and Ian represented the Union by attending the Thanksgiving service. We also sympathize with & pray for Tom and Mantla Norris & the boys on the recent death of Tom’s mother in Wexford.

PRAYER, PRAYER, PRAYER As we build on integrating prayer into the mainstream of who we are and what we do in CUP, over the next few months we are setting aside short periods to pray, leading in January to 24 hours of prayer. In the meantime here are the details for October and November :

Friday 10th October 3pm to 9pm ( Nb the last two hours of this will focus on the Vision and Development work in CUP.) Friday 8th November 9am to 9pm Parish Centre, Church Hill, Meeting Room ...over

Page 8: October 2013

...continued

Please drop in and stay for as long as you can. NB, the kitchen will be open for coffee etc

Lets act with the audacious prayer Jesus urges us to: “So I say to you ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” Luke 11

CONNECT 2013 - INVITE, INVITE, INVITE Over and above the regular opportunities to invite others, there are two key events taking place in October for which we have attractive invitation cards produced.

Firstly, the harvest festival service in Blarney at 3.30pm (see elsewhere for details) is a draw because of the popular appeal of the harvest season – it is a tradition that still connects.

Then on the 27th October, once

again we are holding a

Pet Blessing Service

in the Parish Centre at 3.30pm.

Pets are a great source

of joy to many, and this short service where everyone is invited to bring their pets however big or small, is a way of acknowledging the gift of God that they are.

if you would like to help out with getting the Parish Centre ready for this event, providing tray bakes, refreshments etc , we would be glad to hear from you. Please speak to Rosemary Hickey or myself. Aisling Cottage—New Resident It’s great that Matthew Watson has now moved into Aisling Cottage for this year—and, among other things, will be assisting Marg in developing the talents & enthusiasm of our young musicians.
