Ken Caple, President

Sue Douglas, SVAS Reporter

It is with great sadness that I see another “Accordion Great”, Mr. Vince Cirelli leave this world. It is not easy to stand by, as time marches on, and watch our Community shrink. With very few young people coming into the arena to replace our seniors, we surely are time limited.

I wish to give my condolences to William De Michelis for the loss of his wife Nancy who had suffered for years and passed peacefully in her sleep. She urged William to play at our Oktoberfest for her.

I would like to remind everyone that a fun contest is coming up next month. The audience will be judging songs played with passion. We will have a first place winner and a trophy for the first time.

On a special note, I wish to thank Bob Stanfield for contacting ASCAP about licensing the club to play any and all music with out worry of copyright infringements. Without this infor-mation we were becoming reluctant to play at outside venues such as Oktoberfest.

We have a special volunteer who has been working hard, in the background, for our club with little recognition. Scott Bader, John Brane’s nephew, has been helping set up the room at Harry’s for many months and now has volunteered to store and set up out musical equipment for our performances. This is a lot of work and it is appreciated by all. Thank You , Scott.

As we walked into the entertainment room, President Ken Caple playing such melodies as Die Lorelei and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. Hubert Kallabis joined in and they played Brasilia and Edelweiss. Then they played a sing-along called Happy Wanderer, it was so fun to see Rick, who sits up in front, move his arms and head and shoulders to the rhythm! He’s a comical participant. Hubert and Ken played La Paloma and Wooden Heart and other songs. Next Hubert played several pieces

solo to close the preprogram .

Our first first-half players, Dick Schiller and his son, Don, who is a great drummer, played a march called Vienna Forever. Don started it out with very clear and accurate drum beats. Their next piece was Les Bicyclettes de Versailles, and people danced. During the Hoop Dee Doo polka there were two sets of dancers. Dick and Don played Time After Time and then a beautiful Mexican piece called La Bikina and Vic and Barbara Corsiglia danced. Another couple who danced very energetically are Pat and Rita Sullivan, new visitors to SVAS. It was exciting to watch them.

Our second first-half player, Don Savant, played Italian songs called Annamorato and Summertime in Venice. His next one, Santa Lucia, he says comes from Napoli. He played Tourna a Sorrento and What a Wonderful World. Don knows history of the music and he mentioned that Frank Sinatra used to sing the next one called My Way. His finale was

Oh Marie and Vic Corsiglia sang that one.

Welcome New Member: Nancy Pennington

Our third first-half player, Jon Persson, all the way from Seat-tle, Washington, played a French melody, then All the Things You Are.

His Mom was Swedish and his Father was Swiss and in memory of his Mom, he played a Swedish polka that was popular in his family and he had us sing the “Hey!” part of the polka. It was impressive to watch his hand come down to touch the correct note after he raised it, without even looking at the key-board! That takes practice. Then he changed to the Roland

chromatic accordion and with phenomenal fingering, he played La Chaquitta and a piece called Russian Sailors. He performs on cruise ships so even vacationers can enjoy the music. He of-

fered his CDs for us to access.

M.C., Bill Tapogna, introduced us to his friend, Dino. San Francisco Accordion Club president, Lynn Ewing, will be playing at Filoli Gardens on November 30th at 2pm. Lynn also mentioned that Peter DiBono will be playing at the San Francisco Club in November. Bill also mentioned that our treasurer, Bob Stanfield, has been doing a remarkable job han-dling the SVAS finances and that president, Ken Caple, was able to handle the issue of le-gality regarding our playing old titled music in public.

Bill also announced the new membership of Nancy Pennington.

Raffle-time and Karen won the $50.00, Barbara Corsiglia won the Hofbrau meal ticket, Pam won a CD and Evelyn won a CD.

During the intermission, as we were enjoying our coffee and the goodies that Paul and Leah Powers always bring, all the way from Capitola. Herb Meier, all the way from Germany, played Mama Inez, a Cuban song, and then he played and sang in German, Wien Du Stadt Meiner Traume.

Mike and Steve Trucco Our featured players, Steve Trucco and his son, Mike, played Tourna a Sorrento, Volare, La Paloma and Flight of the Angels. When they played Eh Compare, at least two in the audience sang. Their next fun thing was the Beer Barrel Polka and we all sang that one! It was nice to see Steve’s wife, Judy and Mike’s cute little daughter, Chloe, who was dancing while they played. We truly enjoyed their performance.

The SVAS Passion Play Contest This contest was conceived of earlier in the year to bring attention to a musicians skill in conveying the feeling of a song to the audience as he or she feels it. To play a musical piece with passion. At the beginning there wasn’t a lot of interest, however, as people thought about it they began to sign up for this special opportunity. We have had a sign up sheet and have made announcements on a regular basis since the beginning of the year and now I can say the contest is filled.

We have a brave group of people who will be performing for us during the first half of our November 4th meeting. One song will be played to be judged. The audience will be the judges and will have a rating sheet to record their opinion of who is performing their song with the greatest passion.

Vincent Cirelli, Master Craftsman , Accordion Maker, Repairman and Mu-sician age 91 , passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Son of Italian immigrants was born on December 21, 1920 and grew up in the North Beach area of San Francisco. There he began learning the art of accordion building. In 1946 Vincent opened his accordion business in San Francisco where he began growing his business into a distinguished hub for musicians in the Bay Area and the US.

As a young boy he began taking lessons when his father rented him an accordion for $5.00 per month. He worked as a shop boy at Columbo & Sons accordion

factory. During this experience Vincent dreamed of building his own accordion with pearly keys and his name across the front. He began building his first model while in high school. WWII came and he went into the Coast Guard for 4 years. After getting out he finished building his accordion and went on a tour playing his new instrument. He re-turned to San Francisco in 1946 and began building and repairing and selling accordions ever since. Vince is an icon of our accordion world and will be missed.

In his later years he took Skyler Fell as his Repair Apprentice to teach the art and technology of accordion repair. Skyler now has her own repair shop Accordion Apocalypse in San Francisco.
