The U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show, October 19-27 at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma offers a premium line-up of the world’s best Arabian, Half-Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian horses vying for the coveted title of U.S. National Champion. Along with world-class competition, U.S. Nationals will offer world-class entertain-ment from renowned horse trainer and performer Sylvia Zerbini who most recently starred in the critically acclaimed production of Cavalia (2008-2011). Zerbini and her herd will perform Grand Liberty Thursday evening, Oct. 25, Friday evening, Oct 26, and a matinee perfor-mance, Saturday, Oct. 27 in Ford Truck Arena. Zerbini’s Grand Liberty is presented by Markel Insurance and is included in the price of admission.

The U.S. Nationals attracts approximately 9,000 out-of-town visitors to Tulsa from mostly North America, but also parts of South America, the Middle East and Europe, the economic impact on Tulsa is estimated at approximately $35.5 million. Designed specifically for families interested in learning more about Arabian horses, the Total Arabian Interaction and Learning (TAIL) program, Oct. 25-27, provides a guided tour of the show with an expert guide who will take each group through the barn to meet and pet an Arabian horse and then watch the compe-

tition with the benefit of explanation from a guide. To reserve a spot, please email [email protected].

Accompanying the competition in the ring, exhibitors and spectators can browse the AHA Shopping Expo with over 100 equine-related vendor booths in and around the Exchange Center building. The AHA Shopping Expo is open from 10:00 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.

U.S. Nationals offers a little something for every horse admirer with an array of disciplines ranging from saddle seat classes to working cow competition. Expo Square’s historical Pavilion will host the show’s halter classes, while Mustang arena will house working western classes and the Ford Truck Arenas will be home to hunter pleasure, western pleasure, mounted native costume, pleasure driving, side saddle and more. Classes start each morning at 8:00 a.m. and last through an evening session that begins at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday is the only exception with no evening session.

There is $527,500 in Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes money available this year for sweepstakes nominated horses that show in sweepstakes designated classes.

U.S. Nationals is the site of the annual AHA Arabian Horse Judging Contest. This

special event is a training ground for young men and women who will shape the future of the horse industry. Contestants from 4-H and FFA clubs, AHA clubs and universities from across the continent come for almost $10,000 in scholarships and amazing prizes including saddles from Nymeyer’s At Tanglewood.

Admission to the show is free for the first six days and is then $10 for adults and $7.50 for students and seniors from Oct. 25-27. Kids 12 and under are free.

U.S. Nationals is supported by AHA Corporate Partners: Adequan, All Things Equine, Bank of America, The Hat Lady, Marriot, and Zia Graphics.

“A Tulsa treasure”, “a place of miracles”, “the happiest place on earth”. These are all ways that the Little Light House has been described by people who visit the Christian preschool for children with special needs at 36th and Yale. Celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year, The Little Light House has been serving children with down syndrome, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism, and many other develop-mental and physical delays in an environment that provides individualized special education and therapy programs for each child. Parents are amazed when they find the Little Light House, and are even more amazed when they ask the question, “How much does this cost?” and find that the answer is “Not a thing.”In 1972, founder Marcia Mitchell searched for services for her daughter who was born with a visual impairment and found none. Out of her concern for children in the area and her own daughter, she and another parent decided to open a school for children with special needs in Tulsa. Since then the school has been supported by the Tulsa community strictly by private donations and four major annual fundraisers each year. “We are amazed by the generosity of the people of Tulsa time and time again,” says Molly Smith, Director of Development. “Without their continued support our students would not be able to receive these services when they are needed most, during their early preschool years.”Despite the milestones and miracles that are achieved through the students at the Little Light

House every day, one major problem remains. Although the school serves 64 children year-round, they have over 100 children on their waiting list. Children are waiting as long as three years before they are able to enroll in the program. “The first six years are the most important learning years we experience, and with a waiting list as long as we have our children are losing valuable time that could be spent learning life skills needed to continue to kindergarten and first grade,” says Julie Lipe, Director of Educational Services. With such a critical need for early intervention, the Little Light House has decided to expand its facility in order to serve more children. The new facility would allow the school to more

than double its enrollment, allowing the waiting list to dramatically decrease. This facility would not only serve more children, but allow room for other outreach opportunities that are close to the heart of the Little Light House. One such outreach focuses on training professionals and students in the Tulsa area to work with children with special needs through college and univer-sity programs. Currently 15 colleges and universities in the area send students to the Little Light House as part of their curriculum. This helps the children of the Little Light House by ensuring when they meet professionals in the community such as doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, and therapists that those professionals will have a greater compassion and knowledge of how to work with special needs

children. The LLH also hosts professional conferences for teachers and therapists to get educational credit that focus on working with special needs children. With a new facility and auditorium the school will be able to train more professionals and help more children with special needs than ever before. Once funding is raised the new facility will be built. “We hope to break ground sometime during our 40th anniversary year,” says Jean Winfrey, Executive Director. “It would be a dream come true to expand and allow for more children to receive our services. We are shovel-ready and can’t wait to get started!”

The Little Light House has received national and international recognition, and has been visited by members from over 25 delegations. There are now Little Light House locations in Jackson, Mississippi and Denton, Texas, and is open to new affiliate opportunities to extend their reach across the nation. The Little Light House encourages guests to come for a tour any time. To schedule a same day or future tour please call (918)664-6746.
