“Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What's a

sundial in the shade?” Benjamin Franklin

Dear Church:

I have so much respect for Carl Hoon, director of music for Apostle Presbyterian

Church. There are MANY reasons I hold him in high esteem but the one that I like to

hold up is the fact that he loves people so much he wouldn’t dream of letting them do

something would bring embarrassment to them. There have been a number of times

people have come to Carl and asked that they be allowed to play an instrument or sing

a solo. Carl keeps an open mind and tells folks he would like to hear their musical

selection. If he knows that their offering will not be the best use of their gifts and

talents, he tells them NO. Sometimes people are very unhappy with Carl but the truth

is he loves people so much that he will not set them up for failure.

The flip side of that coin of course are folks who have WONDERFUL gifts that we

could use at Apostle but neglect to bring them. I have been investigating a partnership

with CROSSROADS KIDS CLUB since last May. Crossroads helps the local church

get into public schools to provide programming one afternoon a week, right after

school hours. Matt Armstrong, the director of Crossroads Kids Club, has been doing

this work for 12 years and is very skilled at helping churches engage in their local

school district. Part of this program is letting the local church and school have their

own identity. The school district will have the opportunity to tell us what they need—

homework help?-tutoring?-teaching manners? And the church is encouraged to be

who they are---people at the school wouldn’t necessarily know we are CROSSROADS

KIDS CLUB but they certainly would know we are APOSTLE PRESBYTERIAN

CHURCH. It is the best of the best!! We wouldn’t have to push a message that isn’t

true to who we are and would be in the community working. HOWEVER, to make

this go, we need 4 to 6 volunteers and that is where I am stuck right now. Of course

they need to be people who have a passion for little folks, who are reliable, who would

study the lesson plan and could work with the school. Again this is too important so I

wouldn’t dream of setting someone up for failure nor set the program and therefore our

church up for failure. It is exciting to think of this opportunity however we need to

have folks step forward that feel called to do this work.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 says” There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit

distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 there are

different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

A Message from our Pastor

ACTS OF APOSTLE

October 2012 ACTS OF APOSTLE

We need therefore to look to see what each of us DOES have to offer—there is a place for all, not one person

who has it all. When we use what God has given us, we indeed bring glory to the kingdom. As we work to-

gether to bring the light of Jesus Christ to each other AND to those outside our walls, have you thought about

what you might have to offer?? Have you considered trying something you have never tried before?? I love

to talk to people about where they see their gifts and talents being put to use. I, however, like Carl wouldn’t

dream of setting someone up for failure by letting them do something I know they aren’t gifted in.

Give me a call if you wonder where you might be of service. There are many tools we can use to discover

what gifts/talents you might possess. It is FUN to see what you see vs. what is real in terms of what God has

given you.

I will continue to pray about leadership for a kids club in a West Allis school. I know we have folks very gift-

ed in this area. Could that be YOU?

See you in church!!!

Cathy

building.

Adult Sunday School – The Wired Word

Starting last Sunday, September 9th, the adult Sunday school class is meeting from 8:45 to 9:30

a.m. in the adult classroom, located next to the library. Each week the lesson is based on a dif-

ferent current event and how it affects us as Christians. You don’t have to make a long term

commitment since the topics change weekly. The door is always open and the coffee pot is on.

WOW- Worship on Wednesday will be held October 3rd thru November 7th, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

WOW is a six week Intergenerational Dinner/Study experience for children, teens and adults.

The cost for dinner is $2.00 per child, $3.00 per adult with a limit of $6.00 per family each night.

We are looking for volunteers to make desserts for WOW. A sign up sheet is in the back of the

sanctuary if you would like to donate a dessert. If you have any questions, please contact Hazel

Johnson.

WOW Adult Study

The adult study will be based on the movie "Facing the Giants". The movie is about the power of

faith, on the football field and off. (Even if you don't like football, you will be inspired to never

give up and never lose faith.).

You do NOT need to watch the movie before the study starts to participate. However, if you

would like to watch the movie before WOW starts, there are copies in the back of the sanctuary.

Please borrow a copy and then return it the following Sunday so others will also be able to watch

it.

“UPCOMING EVENTS“

“So a quarter note is also called a quaver?” Yep, that’s right. That’s one of the many things we dis-

cuss in the Thursday night music symbol class and it has been fun talking about the music road

map. About 12 have been in attendance and we are even trying to write a song or hymn for congrega-

tion use. We’ll see!

Rehearsals have now started for the Christmas Cantata. The musical work “Celebrate the Wonder”

will be presented to the congregation in December. There is still room for more singers. Rehearsals

are held Thursday at 7:15 pm and Sunday night at 6:00p.m. You don’t have to attend both because

the rehearsals pretty much cover the same material. Practice CD’s with part dominance are availa-

ble.

The fall has begun and the fall and Christmas seasons are here. Thanks to all of the talented people

who make the music of Apostle an important and praiseworthy part of Apostle’s vision.

Blessings,

Carl

CROP WALK

Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 1:30 PM

You Can Make a Difference

Join the CROP Walk and help stop hunger. It starts at the McKinley Marina on Milwaukee’s

Lakefront. The 2-mile walk goes around the lagoon; the 5.5-mile walk goes into the city. 25%

of the money raised from the CROP Walk stays in the Milwaukee area and the rest benefits

Church World Service, a non-profit organization that provides sustainable self-help and devel-

opment, disaster relief and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries including the United

States. Non-perishable food collected at the food drive is donated to the Hunger Task Force,

which distributes it to the Milwaukee area food pantries.

Walkers: We encourage you to save the date and join us. You may pick up your pledge sheets

after church in Fellowship Hall any Sunday until October 14, and then obtain pledges from

church members, relatives and friends until the walk on October 14.

Thank Offering

Food: A box will be provided in the back of the church to place non-perishable food such as

canned fruit and vegetables, dry cereal, oatmeal and pancake mixes, pastas, rice, potato mixes,

canned meat, fish and chicken, peanut butter, nuts, chili, stews and soup.

We invite our Apostle Congregation to join in the fun of walking together or give pledges to

those who are walking and to bring food items to church. We will deliver the food items on the

day of the CROP Walk. Thank you for participation to help feed the hungry. For further infor-

mation, call Adelle or Al Sanford 1-414-421-1705.

A special Thank You to JUDY PUSCHNIG for chairing this years VBS week

all by herself.

Judy did a phenomenal job in seeing that VBS went off beautifully. A lot of work

went into the preparation of this event and Judy handled it like a pro, in spite of the

fact her co-chair was unavoidably unable to help her. GREAT JOB JUDY!!

When the week got started, Judy had many, many volunteers who helped to make

this a fun and exciting week for the children who attended. THANK YOU to every-

one who gave up their time to be at church EVERY DAY for one week. Without peo-

ple like you, God’s work could not be done. PASTOR CATHY was there everyday to

open and close the day. Thank you for making this a priority in your very busy

schedule.

To Rudy Baumann on his new job!

Rudy has become Head Chef for Aurora Hospital in Two Rivers, WI.

Rudy will oversee both of their cafeterias and their entire patient meal pro-

gram.
