ColumbusOn October 16, the U.S. Supreme Court deniedOhio Secretary of State Jon Husteds bid for a stay that

would have eliminated the three days of early voting imme-

diately preceding Election Day on November 6. The decision,

issued without published dissent from the court, signals

federal support for increased voting opportunities in Ohio

and falls in line with other recent decisions by federal

district courts to uphold voter access.

In September, U.S. District Judge Peter C. Economus

decided that Ohioans have a constitutionally protected

right to participate in the 2012 electionand all electionson an equal basis. Appealing this decision, Secretary

Husted was dealt another blow by the 6th Circuit Court of

Appealswhen they sided with Judge Economus on the basis

of equal protection for all Ohioans. Secretary Husted ap-

pealed the decision up to the Supreme Court, where he was

once more told that all Ohioans deserve the right to vote

and that diminishing early voting opportunities is unaccepta-

    ble policy.

Following Tuesdays decision, Secretary Husted was quick to

release early voting hoursfor all counties across Ohio in the

spirit of uniformity that he has embraced since taking office.

Early voting hours, however, are still diminished from 2008when the polls in Cuyahoga County were open until 7pm

rather than 2pm on the Monday before Election Day.

The Secretarys directive standardizes hours in all 88 coun-

ties by centralizing control in Columbus, but it also prevents

large counties from setting more generous early voting

hours for their citizens. Cuyahoga Countywith a population

equal to that of the 35 smallest countiescould use more

early voting time to prevent long lines on Election Day.

Today we saw the Supreme Court do the right thing and

side with Ohios voters. While I am pleased with theoutcome, it should not have taken Secretary Husted two

appeals to learn what Ohio voters have known since 2006.

There is no place for gamesmanship when it comes to the

ballot box. Its time to let the people vote, said Senator

Turnerfollowing reports of Tuesdays SCOTUS decision.

With hours now set, Ohioans can plan their vote accordingly.

While it took Secretary Husted two failed appeals to realize

that reducing voting opportunities would not be tolerated, it

will take just one night for Ohio to decide the presidency.

Ensuring open access to the polls is not only good publicpolicy, it is a moral obligation of elected officials.

The Greater Cleveland Regional TransitAuthority (RTA) has broken ground onan $18.5 million redevelopment of itsCedar-University rapid station that willmake it safer, easier to navigate, moreefficient and more inviting.

The glassy new station will also be moreattractive and welcoming. "When youhave things like MOCA coming into thearea, having a state-of-the-art rail/busstation in the heart of the UniversityCircle area is really a positive thing."

RTA won a $10.5 million competitiveTIGER II grant from the U.S. Departmentof Transportation to be able tocomplete the project. The agency alsocontributed $4 million from its own

capital budget and raised money fromother local sources.

Shaffer says that RTA is now seeing the17th straight month of growth in overallridership. The Red Line leads the pack. She says this is attributable to highergas prices and new development inCleveland that is making it harder tofind parking.

The Cleveland Foodbank has received a$325,000 grant from the ClevelandFoundation that will go towards the costof expanding its freezer and cooler to pro-vide more fresh produce to families inneed.

"Clearly, there's a need and gap in ourarea," says Karen Pozna, Director ofCommunications with the Foodbank, citing an annual "meal gap" of 57 millionmeals in the six Northeast Ohio countiesthe nonprofit serves.

"Last year, we distributed over 11 millionpounds of produce," says Pozna. "Wework with over 600 food pantries acrossNortheast Ohio. We also have 12 trucksat our facility that help distribute produceand other foods to various locations."

The Cleveland Foodbank built a new facili-ty in North Collinwood in 2005, yet it hasoutgrown its cooler and freezer space asthe number of families in need hascontinued to rise throughout the reces-sion.

Pozna says that Foodbank hopes to raiseanother $400,000 this fall so that it canbreak ground before the holidays.

At the corner of E. 83rd and CarnegieAvenue, a dilapidated building has beentransformed into a contemporary, glass-walled resource center. Inside thesewalls, youth will be mentored, adults willreceive financial education and job skillassistance, and seniors will record theirhistory within the community.

This is no ordinary redevelopment pro-ject. The PNC Fairfax Connection wasdesigned with maximum community in-put to address the needs and aspira-tions of the Fairfax neighborhood, whichlies just south of the Cleveland Cliniccampus.

We celebrate the opening of the PNC

    Fairfax Connection as a demonstration

of what it truly means to work togetherto create a new relationship and a newbond between a bank and its communi-ty, said Cleveland native James Rohr,

Chairman and CEO of PNC Bank, in apress release. PNC closely collaborated

with the Fairfax community at every stepto ensure the center's design and pro-grams meet the interests and needs ofthis proud and historic community.
