October is the most golden of months.The droughts of last summer have been washed over by September’s storms. The forecast, if ever uncertain, promises mild, lovely days and cool nights for sleeping. No matter how far we have come from our hunter/gatherer days, the weather will alway hold sway over us. Technology can show us hurri-canes or general weather far ahead of it’s arrival, but ultimately nature will have her way with us. World-wide, every country, each region and climate faces challenges due to potential ex-tremes in weather, and here, we are no different. While the weather is beautiful it is easy to believe it will al-ways be so. But what autumn also offers is a time to prepare for what lies ahead in the barren days of winter. This November we will be asked to cast our vote for a government that will make decisions impacting our future. Over the last 40 years since the environmental movement began, forward thinking legislation has resulted in postive measures in returning health to damaged areas and placed important constraints on practices that may have caused harm. But many more measures have been watered down or been denied that if passed may have helped to slow the climate change we are witnessing. Just as a squirrel prepares for winter nut by nut, we can work in small steps to prepare or make changes to lessen our environmental impact and seek creative ways to sooth Mother Natures moods. Like any mother with a wayward child that won’t listen, the lesson she hands out will be no fun at all. small steps make the journey,

Ingredients * 1 cup butter, softened * 1 cup confectioners’ sugar * 1 egg * 1 teaspoon almond extract * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour * 1 teaspoon baking powder * 1 teaspoon salt * 3/4 cup whole almonds * 1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel 1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together adding the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.

3. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appear-ance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. 4. Arrange & bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie. Weather patterns on Delmarva have seemed to follow a pattern over the 30 years that I have been paying attention. Rainy late winter to early Spring trickles down to fair days in June, dry Julys, muggy August, rain returns in September,gorgious Octobers, quirky Novembers, snow in early December, but more often than not a moderate Christmas, and start to the New Year. The last two years have been both extreme and extremely different. By the February 5-6th, 2010 DelMarVa Blizzard, seasonal snowfall had already climbed well up the ranks of great historic winters in several mid-Atlantic cities. In 2012 we waited to be clobbered, rolling into spring unscathed from one of the warmest winters on record.

Each summer grows drier. Farmers watched their crops wilt in the sizzling heat. On the national weather map, showing a mid west drenched in the colors ofextreme drought, only parts of Delmarva showed up as a drought area on the East Coast. Too little water in our day to day proved a challenge this growing season, while the relentless heat of 2012 increased ice cap melt globally contrib-uting to sea level rise. Bayside and seaside communities will be impacted by too much water, forcing communities like Crisfield, Cambridge, Ocean City and The Delaware Beaches to rethink their futures. According to a University of Maryland CIER report: Along Maryland’s coast, sea level is expected to rise between 24 and 48 inches by the end of the century. Over the next several decades, average temperatures in the Northeast are projected to rise as much as 4º.

It is easy to see effects already in eroding shorelines, flooded wetlands and sand loss on area beaches. Pelicans have moved north from Virginia beaches and are now a common sight over the water in Maryland. Our shorelines will see water levels rise at double the rate of most places on the planet, according to the U.S. Geo-logical Survey. Sinking land in the Chesapeake Bay area is also projected to worsen the effects of relative sea level rise . “We have direct evidence of a hot spot stretching from Cape Hatteras in North Carolina to just above Boston,” says Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the U.S. Geological Survey’s St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center in Florida. “ Long-term climate trends may have created this hot spot by changing ocean currents,” says Sallenger. With the atmosphere heating, parts of the North Atlantic have warmed and freshened. Computer simulations suggest the decreasing density of these waters could weaken the powerful Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Current, which keep water away from the East Coast. Other scientists credit the sea level speedup to weather patterns that could soon reverse. There was a period in the 1960’s when sea level actually fell along the mid-Atlantic coast. Either way, the little road that winds through miles of marshland out to our home on Maddux Island is under a high tide more often these days. Virginia and Maryland Coastal Programs have developed a “Living Shorelines” initiative that promotes alternatives to armoring shorelines with hard structures such as bulkheads and stone revetments, which eliminate wetlands and beaches. Alternatives include establishing oyster reefs, planting vegetation, such as marsh and dune grass, or using a combination of vegetation and strategically placed low-profile barriers such as rocks or wood. Marshes absorb storm surges and changing water levels, while providing a natural buffer zone. Communities and government agencies are working together to plan strategies for weather events and general water issues. Stormsmartcoasts.org provides an online forum for coastal com-munities to find and share information about protecting coastal communities from extreme weather, sea level rise, and other climate-related hazards. The east coast boasts some of ournation’s largest population centers along with Washington, DC. Much of this city’s icons are built on reclaimed swamps. Sea level has actually risen about 2 feet since the city was founded more than 200 years ago. The most recently built levees are over 70 years old and could fail if a major weather event rose water in the Potomac River. Much of downtown DC, including

our national memorials, the National Archives, museums and key office buildings could be swamped in up to 10 feet of water. Norfolk and Virginia Beach are more exposed large population centers already tangling with a 4 inch sea level increase. Sadly, a shelved 2008 climate action plan, had urged state agencies to factor sea level rise and storm surge predictions into transportation and infrastructure plans while revising local land use policies in coastal areas to minimize threats to lives and property. Currently entire neighbor-hoods and landmarks like the Chrysler Art Museum increasingly find themselves surrounded by high water. Politically, little has happened here in the US or globally to take measures to limit the effects from climate change. Stefan Rahmstorf, at the Potsdam Institute in Germany notes; “ If nations acted to cut carbon emissions so the temperature rise was only 1.5C, the sea level rise would be halved. “ Here on Delmarva, Assateague island was sited in a NRDC report as “at risk,” along with other popular East Coast National Parks. “The natural environment of Assateague Island National Seashore is expected to become less stable under most climate change projections.”the report reads. continued page 54.

“Driven by increasing rates of sea level rise, more intense and possibly more frequent storms, the island will experience an increased likelihood for erosion, over wash, inlet breaching, shoreline retreat and island narrowing.” The sea draws us close to its dazzling vistas, but what joys it offers, it may also take back without apology. Those of us that choose to live near the shoreline must understand our tenuous hold at the edge of such magnificent beauty. The shore line changes with every tide, adapting and restructuring itself. Perhaps this is our lesson forward. We all agree that the weather has been unpredictable and at times challenging. If the pattern of drought threatens traditional crops like corn, it may be wise to explore more drought tolerant crops. When building in flood prone areas, construction should reflect that possibility. Weather is a long range issue, overwhelming and easy to put off, but ignoring it can not be an option. One thing is clear, water will continue to be an issue locally and globally. It is up to us to seek creative solutions to flow with theenvironmental changes the future may bring.

Last summer’s garden faced many challenges. Deepening droughts require you to spend mornings watering thirsty plants. I am not good at this. My garden is very spread out, which involves much hose dragging and as the summer wore on and our well level dipped, the water I sprayed on my unhappy plants peppered them with salt. Once again I lost my kiwi plants. Tomatoes started out fabulously, but then my odd watering habits blackened their bottoms and withered their base leaves. Skins split and I made lots of sauce from the “good areas” of my maters- refusing to lose my harvest. Then September doused us with buckets of rain. I cleared the garden of spent plants and planted greens, garlic and another round of carrots and radishes. I have a sunny sheltered patch now reseeded with a second round of lettuces. We’ll see how that goes, but if the weather stays moderate into early November, I may get a few weeks of salad. I also sowed a bunch of movable containers with less hardy plants, lettuce, basil and peppers. These I will lug into the nice little green house, John and I built last spring using windows and doors from our local Habitat store. Some plants like parsley will reseed themselves and weather the entire winter. My spring beets are sprouting a second round of mini leaves perfect for salads off the original plants. So get your second season seeds in now. You may also plant in cold frames. The lids will stay open until the weather gets chilly, then close them par-tially at night and opened again during the day. Both cold frames and greenhouses get incredibly hot during the day, even in the middle of winter, so to avoid baking your plants, monitor the temperature and posi-tion openings for the appropriate airflow. You can also cover your greens with a bed sheet or a piece of plastic on cold nights. Some gardeners bend PVC pipe into half arcs over their raised beds and cover them with clear plastic. If you don’t have a gar-den or raised beds, you can grow lettuce di-rectly in soil bags on boards or in a wagon. Set the bags in a sunny spot, slit them open and sow the seed. Protect the seedlings on frosty evenings by pulling the boards or wagon indoors. Of course you may just decide to fill a sunny corner window with a few container plants to prolong summer’s bounty as the fall grows cooler.
