3 FROM THE PRESIDENT By Dave Edens

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Craig Sloane

The Centennial year is wrapping up, as is my term as President of the Club. It has been a very exciting year with change, accomplishment, and progress towards our goals. At this time, we are planning for next year. The Board is evaluating potential new members to fill the three slots that will be vacated by Scarlet Oster-ling, Carina Walker, and myself. The committees are looking to fill their empty seats for next year as well as choose the new Chairs for 2011. I would like to thank everyone that submitted a committee interest form. This year we had our greatest response ever. It is you, ATCC volunteers, that help make our Club special. On September 19th, I met with the Committee Chairs and current Board Members to discuss the past year and to plan for the upcoming year. We are continually evaluating our progress on the Strategic Plan. We are well into the plan and have completed significant work towards many goals. Our governance structure and finance systems are in place. We have completed the Jacuzzi project, and we are on the way towards break-ing ground on the Fitness Center in 2011. One item that we discussed is restructuring the com-mittee process. Currently, each committee has 9 mem-bers and focuses on a specific area. We have commit-tees for Tennis, Food & Beverage, House & Grounds, Membership, Swim, Social, and Long Range Planning.

We also have the ad hoc Centennial Committee and the advisory Wine Group. My question to the Commit-tee Chairs was, “Is there a way to make our committee structure more streamlined and continue the progress we have made over the last several years?” The Chairs will be meeting with their members and we will con-tinue this discussion with the new Board and Board President. A few last notes on our history: 1986 The Club establishes the "Jack Swafford Award" to be bestowed annually on the Club member who has provided "distinguished service to the Club." 1994 Brenda Click becomes the Club’s first Tennis Director; during her tenure tennis pros include Paul Click, Rich Redman, and Ivo Mikulasek. 1996 Club membership is 320. 1999 Fred Guerra becomes tennis director; Paul Click is head tennis pro; Danny Jauregui joins the pro staff; 585 attend the July 4th party. Please feel free to let me know of any concerns or comments, both good and bad. My email address is [email protected].

Hello summer??? While the calendar says Fall, mother nature keeps re-minding us that we still have some warm days ahead. And that means pool usage will remain consistent thru October. Therefore, a friendly reminder about Jacuzzi rules would seem appropriate: • No children under six are allowed in the Jacuzzi

(even with parents). • Children between six and thirteen years old must

have an adult present (and that means inside the Jacuzzi fence) to use the Jacuzzi.

• Teens, 14 years and above, may use the Jacuzzi without parental supervision, as long as their be-havior dictates.

• No food or beverage allowed inside the Jacuzzi area.

Runners, hikers, bikers, golfers, gamers, yoga fans, those who love the arts: Our Social Committee wants you! We want enthusiastic members who would like to spearhead the effort to get these clubs/groups estab-lished at our Club. It makes sense. Our membership is made up of marathoners and tri-athletes, biking en-thusiasts, exercise fanatics, lovers of the outdoors, and those culturally savvy. You don’t need to be an expert to share your passion with your fellow member. If you have another suggestion for a group/club or if inter-ested, contact me or Social Committee Chair Rich Mayne [email protected]. Comedy and music. The Stan Smith tennis exhibition. Three wine events on calendar. Annual Meeting. Spe-cial holiday events. So much to do at your Club. I’ll look forward to seeing you.

4 FOOD & BEVERAGE COMMITTEE REPORT By Robert Duncan

Summer is over, the kids are back in school, and the Club’s reserve wine list is depleted. Fall brings us a swarm of activi-ties that take our time and energy, and the Club is here to help you relax, and maybe add a bit to your work load: this month begins its annual cycle of volunteer recruitment to fill slots on the various committees, from Food and Beverage to Membership to House & Grounds. Our Food and Beverage Committee has generated over a dozen applications for the three slots that are available and all of the candidates are ex-cellent. There are many opportunities to get involved at the Club and some committees have more applicants than others. If you have ever considered volunteering, please talk to Craig about where you might best be able to help. It’s only a little work but a lot of fun. Chef John continues to refine our menu so keep an eye out for new additions. If you have not tried the olive oil poached tuna, it’s fantastic, even if you don’t like fish. Barely seared, it’s red in the middle and melts in your mouth. Remy is organizing an Oktoberfest party Sunday, October 10th offering German food, great beer and a wonderful out-door setting in the late afternoon. And a bargain at only $20, which includes a pint of beer. September’s Burgundy wine dinner was another hit with its Meadow setting and the good food and incredible wines, and

education on the Burgundy wine region of France. Look out for more outdoor events that take advantage of the natural beauty our Club setting offers. October 23rd we will have a wine dinner featuring Paso Robles’ Tablas Creek- great wines at good prices. Curtice Booth is organizing this one so make sure to get your reservation in now, it will surely sell out! Finally, the reserve wine list is down to just a few bottles, but Michael Smith and the Wine Gang are on it! Look for more additions from recent auctions where you will be sure to get good deals- the wine guys do not buy at top dollar, only great wines at discounted prices. The Club’s new pric-ing structure is far below comparable clubs or restaurants so rest assured when you order wine here you are getting an excellent deal.

FROM THE MEMBER SERVICES DIRECTOR By April Bergen

It’s hard to believe (although I guess not really because I say it every year) that it is October and it is SO hot! Los Angeles broke a record last week for the hottest day ever recorded! For that reason, we will have lifeguards here on the week-ends as long as it continues to be warm. So come by the Club, enjoy the pool and stay cool! Our Centennial Swim team reunion was last month and it turned out to be a really nice event. Burt Kanner who coached from ’77-’86 was here and connected with many of his former swimmers and reminisced about the time he spent here. He also gave a motivational speech to the current swimmers at the team banquet the next day! We had many other past swimmers and coaches attend, including Huck, who many of you know and love. Thanks to all who made this event great! October is the time for many Fall Festivals from all the local schools. We usually add one more to that and have our own Fall Festival in the lower parking lot. Last year we combined it with a Halloween event and had Fright Fest 2009! This year, the Youth Committee has decided to change it up a bit

and have our festival at the end of winter/beginning of spring. We are doing this to take the pressure off of parents who had to attend multiple festivals in the same month and often not able to come to the Club’s event. Details to come soon! But don’t fret! We have plenty of exciting kid events going on in the month of October. There will be a special Hallow-een event on Friday, October 22nd in Kids Klub. We will have a costume contest with prizes, pumpkin carving, crafts and more! Get more use of the kids’ costumes and bring them in for this night of Halloween fun! We also have our monthly Kids Night Out, on Friday, October 8th, featuring “Magic Night”! This night is always a favorite with the kids but we do need a certain amount of kids in order to bring the professional magician in so make sure to rsvp now! As always, if you have any questions, concerns or ideas please send them my way at [email protected]. Happy October everyone!

I began running about four years ago as a way to get some exercise- some kind of exercise, any kind of exercise to supplement my pretty sedentary lifestyle. Actually I began walking a short route, every other day, and eventually got so bored that I started running it. I kept going farther and stayed motivated by entering races like 5Ks, built up to 10Ks and then 1/2 marathons, which are 13.1 miles. Running can be tedious so I look for races that are exciting or different. When I travel I bring running shoes and enter races if possible. A weekend vacation in Napa, I took with my wife, my sister and her husband was one example. There was a half marathon going on that Saturday morning and I thought, perfect. Running through the bucolic vine-yards and then rewarding myself by sipping wine and eating great food would make a wonderful trip. The starting point of the race was a state park. The first sign of trouble was the sparse turnout- only a couple dozen people present. Usually these races have thousands of en-trants. And these few dozen were hard-core runners: skinny, lifetime runners, bouncing up and down with cheery enthusiasm at 7am. I am certain I outweighed everyone there. No matter what you look like, when you run you often feel like a fleet-footed god, a Ferrari tearing down the road. Sometimes reality intrudes, like the time I caught a glimpse of my reflection in storefront glass: huffing and puffing, belly out, shuffling along like Dustin Hoffman in MARA-THON MAN (after the dental work). Quite a let down from what was going on in my head. This Napa run was not

through the vineyards, but straight up a mountain on a nar-row trail, down the other side, and then back up and down again, totaling 13 miles. The first part up the mountain was brutal but got easier after the peak, heading downhill. Towards the bottom I heard screaming from several runners ahead of me. What was going on? As I got close to the commotion I got the an-swer- my legs were attacked by a swarm of wasps that had settled on the trail. I limped to the bottom of the mountain and was pointed back up for the second loop of the race. I had a good ex-cuse to quit as my legs were hurting from the wasp stings, but a little voice in my head whispered, "You aren't going to wimp out, are you?" Tell my wife, sister, brother-in-law that I quit? That misery would have been worse than con-tinuing, so I did. I can’t say I ran the whole race, but I did finish it. The wine tasted extra special that trip, as I had the sympa-thy and respect of my family for just about the entire week-end. I was also thrilled to receive a second place ribbon for my age category. This was a surprise since my finishing time was embarrassingly slow, but I displayed this proudly on my fridge to the general acclaim of my kids. I was bragging about my second place ribbon that Thanks-giving when my brother asked, “Second out of how many?” I had to look up my category, Males 35-39. I confirmed that I was indeed second place- as well as last place.

ANNUAL MEETINGANNUAL MEETING

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH BEGINS AT 5:00 P.M. VICTORIAN ROOM

Join us at the Club to meet our prospective new

Board Members and to discuss plans for the future.

Well, hello again everyone! By the time you read this, I will be back on the courts—at least a little. In case you didn’t know, I am just recovering from spinal fu-sion surgery, and it seems to be going really well. The pain that was close to preventing me from walking seems to be gone. The remaining pain is most likely associated with the surgery itself, and the usual fail-ings of an aging body. So, I’ll be seeing you out there soon! For this month’s tennis tip, let’s talk about thinking on your feet. All too often, I see players exhibiting signs of schizophrenia—that is doing the same thing time and time again and expecting a different result. This could be as basic as hitting the second serve just as hard as the first serve, yet being surprised when you double fault. But, more often, it involves the total style of play. Consider the following match: Players A and B are playing singles. Both players are about the same 3.5 level, and both enjoy staying on the baseline and putting those nice, paid for groundstrokes to good use. Both players have little confidence at the net, mainly because they only venture up there if abso-lutely forced. So, each week when they play, the match is fairly close, with the winner decided by which player double faults a little less, or which is a little more consistent with those nice, loopy, topspin groundstrokes. I see matches like this all the time, and, don’t get me wrong, that’s fine. However, it doesn’t show me much in the way of thinking about how to win.

The key to winning tennis is to get your opponent out of their “comfort zone.” Both of the players above are only really comfortable staying on the baseline. So, how can player A get player B out of his/her comfort zone? The first way that comes to mind would be to hit a few balls “East L.A. Style.” That is, low and slow. Force player B to come forward to hit a low ball. This works especially well on your opponent’s two-handed backhand side. This most likely will elicit a somewhat weak return, as well as leave your opponent in a position on the court with which they are not very familiar. Now, you can choose your next shot, depend-ing on their position. If they are scrambling to get back to their beloved baseline, you can hit one of your dependable groundstrokes, now made much more ef-fective by their retreat and poor court position. Or, if they have decided to stay up by the net after retrieving your short shot, you can use one of your dependable groundstrokes against their not so dependable volley. Or, if they are really on top of the net, as players unfa-miliar with net play tend to be, you can hit an easy lob winner. The next time you are out there, think about what your opponent is doing. Think about where they like to be, and then figure out a way to keep them from being there! Until next time, the ball’s in your court!
