Horrors! A Monster HitWould you mess with someone

who is 8 feet tall with bolts sticking outof his neck? The Frankensteinmonster is a real scream and knownby many as big, bad and green. However, the literary character’s skinwas actually yellowish. In any case, this oversized science-run-amokfictional figure has gripped wildimaginations for decades.

• British author Mary Shelley, challenged to write a ghost tale, breathed life into Frankenstein’smonster with her 1818 novel.

• In his book “In Search ofFrankenstein,” Radu Florescudeduced that Shelley’sinspiration for the title of her talecan be credited to BurgFrankenstein, a German castle.

• Shelley’s creature was brought tolife by a young Swiss she namedVictor Frankenstein, whoassembled body parts ofthe deceased.

• In 1931, Universal Studiosbrought Frankenstein to the bigscreen, and its success helpedlaunch the horror movie genre. The New York Times reviewnoted that it “aroused so muchexcitement ... that many in theaudience laughed to cover theirtrue feelings.”

• The 1974 movie “YoungFrankenstein” was voted the13th best comedy of all time bythe American Film Institute.

An Intimidating Icon“Whereas boot-makers have

to spend millions to establish atrademark, I was handed a trademarkfree of charge.” —Boris Karloff, whoserole as Frankenstein’s monster in the1931 flick made the character ahorror icon.

You, Too, CanBecome an Author

Three Cheers for a Great ToastMany situations in life call for a

formal celebration. While it’s fun beingpart of a celebratory group, it’s notalways fun being responsible for onepart of the party: the official toast. This practice requires at least onebrave soul to stand before a crowdand offer a few words. While someexcel at such social situations, othersmay shudder at the idea, gettingtongue-tied and flustered. If you everfind yourself in need of such a speech, the following guidelines will help

you deliver a perfectly articulatedtoast every time.

First, acknowledge everyone inattendance to draw your audience in.Make them feel included, and thankthem for coming. Then, offer a sincerethanks to the people responsible forpulling the event together.

After that, think about the reasonyou’re celebrating. Is there a well-known quote or joke that instantlycomes to mind? If so, both are easytransitions to the next part of the toast:honoring the person or reason for theevent. This can be short and sweet oras lengthy as you wish, so long as themessage is honest and comesfrom the heart.

A few more tips: Speak clearly anddeliberately, maintain eye contact andsmile. Remember, it’s not really whatyou say but the fact that you’re sayinganything in the first place that matters.
