Albany in 1845? George and his brother Theodore formed a partnership under the name of Amsdell brothers in 1851. Theodore eventually moved on with his son-in-law George Hawley, and pur-chased the Dobler Brewery. It was situated on Myrtle Avenue and Swan & Elm streets. “The Dobler Brewery was in business until pur-chased in April 1959 by Hampden-Harvard Breweries of Williamansett, Massachusetts, which then shut down shortly thereafter. At one point they pro-duced more than 25,000 barrels of lager beer a year. At the time of the sale Do-bler had 125 employees. The brewery was knocked down in 1960, though the house that John Dobler lived in, which was adjacent to the brewery, still stands. A building that was once the carriage house for 18 horses the brewery used to deliver their beers also still stands.” -Amasa Junius Parker, Landmarks of Albany County, New York

The Todd Nelson Trio will be back by popular demand on Friday, November 5th from 8-10 p.m. in the Grille Room. If you saw them in May, you know they put on a great show; if you didn’t, stop by to see what you missed!

Todd Nelson has recorded or per-formed with Terry Adams (NRBQ), Gary Burke (Dylan Joe Jackson), Hayseed, Aimee Mann, Ed Mann (Frank Zappa), Pal Shazar, Jules Shear, Rumdummies, Malcolm Travis (Sugar), The Wheelers and Dealers and others. He is currently perform-ing original songs and arrangements for his instrumental trio, featuring Kyle Esposito on fretless bass and Manuel Quintana on drums and per-cussion. The performance is free. We’ll be serving dinner from 5-9 p.m. Reservations please. Call 463-1151.

We’ve booked musicians for Decem-ber and January too. Join us on Fri-day, December 3rd when Otto Road will put on a special holiday show and on Friday, January 7th Sonny & Perley will perform.

Regardless of who wins on Election Day, the University Club Foundation invites you to attend a guided tour of the Executive Mansion in Albany on Thursday, November 18th. Built in 1856 and expanded and overhauled in 1886 by Isaac G. Perry, the Man-sion has been home to New York State governors and their families since 1875. The tour will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the University Club with a hot and cold buffet luncheon and a presenta-tion by Assemblymember Jack McEneny on the Governors of New York State. At 12:30 we will depart

They will cover an area bounded by Washington Avenue, Willett Street, Madison Avenue and Swan Streets, and the round trip is approximately 1.5 miles. Hudson/Park resident and Uni-versity Club member Tim Varney, who developed and researched the tour, warns that the narrative will in-clude “graphic material not suitable for children or the faint of heart.” The cost is $15 per person and the pro-ceeds will be divided between Historic Albany Foundation and the University Club Foundation. Contributions are tax deductible. Participation will be limited to no more than 20 people per tour and reservations are required, please call the University Club at 518-463-1151 to add your name to the list. Participants are invited to have a drink or dinner at the Club on the evening of the tour from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. Note: as of press time October 15th and Oc-

tober 29th were almost at capacity;

but there were still spots available for

The cost is $25 for the tour and lunch-eon, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the University Club Foundation Mark your calendar now for our fabu-lous New Year’s Eve Gala- Friday,

December 31st.

The Foundation became involved in the Annual University Club Golf Out-ing last year as a way to raise funds for its programs and, this year, became host of the event which was held on August 31st. Our hope was to blend philanthropic goals with the fun, com-panionship and traditions that have become synonymous with the Club and its events. We are happy to report that the Outing was very successful and, as a result, we were able to offset some sizeable plumbing and building repair bills for the Club. Many thanks to the following people and organizations for their sponsorship or participation in this year’s event:

Those of you who have been in the Grille Room in the evenings know our much-loved bartender April Miller. She’s made your drinks, delivered your food and kept you company for almost 3 years. We thought you’d like to know that April is moving out of the area and will be leaving the club on October 1st. We wish her much happiness and success wherever her life takes her.
