October is a wonderful month. The weather is not so hot.

Snowbirds are returning. Hallow-een is not far off. And then there isfootball.

I was reading a story of some-one who took a pill; and instead ofgrowing older, he grew younger.Did you ever realize the only timein life when we like to get older iswhen we’re kids? If you’re less thanten years old, you’re excited aboutgetting older, if only in fractions.“How old are you?” “I’m four and ahalf”; when you’re four and a half, you soon will be five.

Then you get into your teensand nothing can hold you back.“How old are you?” “I’m gonna besixteen.” You could be thirteen, but sixteen is better. Then thegreatest day in your life comes andyou turn twenty-one. Wow! Youare twenty-one and soon thereaf-

ter, you are thirty. What has hap-pened? Something’s changed; soonyou’re pushing forty. Whoa! Put onthe brakes. Time is fleeting. Be-fore you know it, you are fifty anddreams disappear. But, wait, youmake it to sixty. Did you ever thinkyou would?

So, you become twenty-one,then thirty, then forty and thensixty. The years go so fast and soonyou will be seventy. Perhaps it iseighty. Every day is a completecycle. It comes to be bedtime butthat’s not the end. The next dayyou are ninety and you start goingbackwards, wishing you wereeighty again. But, don’t stop there.Strange things happen. You havemade it to one hundred and you’rea kid again.

No matter how short or howlong life is, make it the best that itcan ever be. So may it be.

In the August 2010 Reporter, PastPotentate Lou Ortt, 33°, wrote

this in his Scottish Rite article forthe month, “We have reached thestage in our fraternity where weneed to look at our symbols andtake their lessons to heart. No sym-bol could be more important at thistime than the beehive. Christianmonks were the first to domesti-cate bees, at least in Europe, and itis to them we owe the beehive as asymbol of industriousness, adoptedby operative masons as a reminderto the apprentice that if he wouldmaster his craft he must be up andat it so long as light lasts.

The beehive, Masonically, issymbol of the industry that shouldbe practiced by all created beings. We should never be satisfied to beidle when we, with a little effort, can help our fellow man or ourfraternity.”

Whenever the beehive is men-tioned in reference to the Masonicfraternity, I cannot help but think

about the real beehives, and theColony Collapse Disorder, a phe-nomenon in which worker beesfrom a beehive or European honey-bee colony abruptly disappear.Colony collapse is economically sig-nificant because many agriculturalcrops worldwide are pollinated bybees. Colony collapse, in relationto Masonic worker bees, is no lessof a problem, when our workerBrothers are no longer pollinatingour Blue Lodges, to help them grow. The cause or causes of the syn-drome are not yet fully understood,in either case. I read articles oflearned Brother worldwide, tryingto deal with our membership col-lapse, and there seems to be no an-swer to our problem, than thehoneybee. One thing I know for sure,as in the 18th century when ourMasonic workers were industriouslybuilding this fine nation, we sureneed that same industriousness tokeep our nation great—Masonry isneeded now more than ever.

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

Lady Carol and I would like to congratulate all of you for helping us withyour Shrine. It is very gratifying to us, what we have accomplished atSahib in 2010.You should be very proud in the fiscal condition and theitems that we were able to do for our physical building. We now have threenew TV’s in the bar area, new carpet in the main hall (which is helping uswith rentals), and a new computer system with back up. The parking lothas new seal coating and striping, repainting of the Sphinxes and theSilent Messenger. Thanks again.

Regards to membership, Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier is helping with this impor-tant area. We must increase our membership and help keep our fraternityongoing. You should be proud being a noble of the Mystic Shrine and wantto add a new candidate for our December Ceremonial. We thank you foryour help in this undertaking. It is very crucial to our philanthropy for theShriners Hospital for Children. I am proud to announce that I will be anassociate member of the Tampa hospital board. Sahib Past Potentate EdPhillips is retiring this year and Past Potenetate Dale LaBell will bemoving into this slot, Past Potentate Oscar Cloutier is also an associatemember. Sahib is proud that we still have our Past Potentates on the boardat Tampa.

Let us not forget our profitable Bingo game on Tuesdays. We can still usemore players and helpers on Tuesdays. It is proving to be our best money-maker in this poor economic time. Thanks for all our nobles efforts.

I am proud to announce a fall circus for Sahib. We will be the sponsor forCole Brothers coming to the Sarasota Dog Track on November 8, 9 and 10;we will only be selling tickets, which starts on October 1.

Remember your Blue Lodge.

Yours in the Faith,

NOTICE OF SPECIAL ELECTIONA special called meeting has been

approved by Shrine Imperial headquar-ters for October 7, 2010. This meetingwill be called after the stated meetingconcludes on the same date. It is forthe purpose of electing an OrientalGuide to fill the current opening on theSahib Divan.

This will be an open election, andany noble in good standing is eligibleto be nominated for the position.

For additional information on theresponsibilities and duties of thisoffice, please contact Potentate DonVos or a member of our current Divan.

Nominations for the position will belimited to five minutes.

I am sure all of us are very happy that our ReporterEditor Gary Schweinshaupt is recovering very well

from his recent heart surgery. We really missed theweekly newsletter, and the timely arrival of ourReporter. If all continues to go well we will be back onschedule by the time you read this issue.

Our fellow nobles from the north have started toreturn to our area, and we are really glad to see them.Their attendance at our luncheon, and other func-tions, make a big difference in our attendance fig-ures. The “snowbirds” are indeed a major part of ourSahib Shriners. Welcome back!

Again a reminder, we need your additional sup-port in our lounge and restaurant areas. The tradi-tional monthly Birthday/Anniversary Dinner danceis not being attended by our nobility as it once was. Infact, if things do not improve soon, this event may beforced to be cancelled. For twenty-five years, thismonthly event was an opportunity to dress up a little, put on a jacket and tie, bring your lady to a nicedinner and meet with friends for an enjoyable socialevening. Please consider marking your calendar for

the second Tuesday of each month to come out toSahib for a great night.

Have you been here on Tuesday morning to playBingo? What a great group of volunteer workers wehave in our Bingo family. Many of them are hereevery week doing a fantastic job in keeping this thebest Bingo center in the Sarasota area. Everyone whoattends seems to have a great time, and our greatcaller Jack, keeps them returning for more of hisunusual chatter and dress. We cannot thank themenough for the work they do for Sahib and for thefunds raised for our fraternity.

Many events are coming up here at Sahib. Checkour website and the calendar for a listing of theseevents. I am sure you will find several coming attrac-tions that will be of interest to you.

We still have about 85 nobles who have not paidthe 2010 dues to Sahib and our Imperial. Our AngelFund is willing and able to assist those who arehaving medical, physical or serious financial difficul-ties in paying their dues. If you, or if you know a noblewho has these problems, please contact your Re-corder or Treasurer so that help can be given.

The days are growing shorter; darkness comesearlier and stays longer. Even though the weather

is still warm down here, the seasons are changing. Many of our snowbirds are returning like the robin’sherald in spring up north.

Before we start our full schedule of activities forthe fall season, we should take a moment to reflectupon our great fraternity that we are fortunate toenjoy and particularly here in Sarasota. We havebeen blessed with Past Potentates who have accom-plished a job well done, and deserve our thanks; and

nobles who have come into our lives and left us withfond remembrances’ because of the unselfish hours ofvolunteer work they have done. These men havemade our temple what it is—the best in Shrinedom.Renew our commitment to Sahib and to our frater-nity.

Have fun - that’s what you joined for, isn’t it? Havea wonderful fall and winter season, and remember,“It takes less effort to smile than to frown” and you’llkeep everyone wondering what you’re up to!

Reality shows like “Dancing with the Stars” captivate millions of American television viewers. The fascination with watching a newcomer learn to dance professionally has inspired many fans to pursue formal training. Patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago joined the craze by partipating in the first-ever Wheelchair Dance Day in December.

The event was the brainchild of Sara J. Klaas, director of SCI services, and former patient Nick Scott, who is a professional wheelchair bodybuilder. Scott became involved

with wheelchair dance last year when he met Aubree Marchione, a professional dancer and actress. The two plan to compete in the Wheelchair Dancesport at the Paralympics in Germany in November 2010. Marchione was eager to teach wheelchair dance to the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago.

“Wheelchair ballroom dance is an activity that has physical, mental and social benefits,” Marchione explained. “These kids get the chance to connect with other people while dancing, and it is an activity that integrates people with disabilities and people without disabilities, which I think is very important.”

Six patients – Tyler, Matthew, Jonathon, K.J., Kerstine, and Imperio – teamed up with hospital staff to learn dances from Scott and Marchione. After three hours of practice, the group performed in front of parents, patients, hospital staff and visitors. Then, Scott and Marchione took to the dance floor for the final performance.

“Everyone did extremely well – standing partners too – and it was the fastest learning class that I have ever taught,” Marchione said. “I think all of them have potential to be really great dancers! The class was a lot of fun because everyone had such a positive attitude and was open-minded to learn something different, just like Nick was when I first met him.”

Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago offers several other programs designed to expand the horizons of patients with spinal cord injury. One of those programs is GLAHM (Good Life and Healthy Mind) Camp, which is a week filled with makeovers, health and wellness education and nights on the town for young women. Wheelchair Bodybuilding Camp is offered to young men, featuring five days of learning about nutrition, fitness options and healthy living.

“These programs get our patients motivated to move and try something new,” Klaas said. “The ultimate goal is to inspire them and build their confidence. When they believe in themselves, they can tackle the challenges their lives throw their way.”

Be safe and stay well.

What a scorcher of a summer. As I write this it isstill very much on the warm side, but by the

time, you read this, the temps should hopefully bedown to enjoyable. So, here is wishing a good fall (asin season) to everyone.

First off, a big Welcome Back to all our beautifulsnowbirds. We have been anxiously awaiting yourarrival to not only fill out our ranks, especially in theMotor Corps, but I also hear that the kitchen isputting on two new helpers for Bob, our terrific chef,as they are anticipating overwhelming crowds at thebar and in the dining hall. Let’s don’t disappointthem. Besides, I am getting tired of supporting thebar by myself, well, almost anyway. I do have goodfriends who don’t mind helping me.

OK, on to what we’ve been doing and to whom, andwhat we will be doing; don’t know to whom yet, butshould by the next issue, so be sure to stay tuned.

I was at Sahib on the first Thursday in Septemberto support the opening of the Hillbilly Buffet foranother season. As always, the food was excellent. Idid over hear a couple of patrons ask if it wasn’t BikerBilly night when they came in, and when told that wewere finished with our summer run, they were reallydisappointed. So I guess that is about as good acompliment as anyone could ask for. We did however;encourage them to try the buffet, which they did.Ain’t we some kinda great bunch of guys, guys? Noresponse to that is necessary, especially from outsidethe club. Thank you.

September started out with the Corps parading inthe Englewood Labor Day parade along with most ofthe other Sahib units. A little on the warm side, still, but we struggled through having a good time in spiteof it all; nothing new there.

Please keep supporting our Sahib Shrine func-tions such as Bingo (Monday’s and Tuesday’s) and ourwonderful Shriner’s Thursday luncheons.

Most important of all, we need to build member-ship to increase Shrinedom and the necessary cashflow required to support our Sahib Shriners and theShriners Hospitals for Children.

A few days later, I took off on my annual fall solobike trip and will still be gone when you read this.Upon my return trip south, I will be meeting theMotor Corps and friends in Murphy, North Carolina, for our fall gathering October 7-10, at Gary Nickols’River’s Edge Mountain RV Resort. This semi-annual trek is open to anyone who would like to takein the fall colors of the western NC Mountains. It isquite an experience and always tons of fun. You donot have to have a motorcycle as we tolerate fourwheels just fine; at the end of the pack, anyway. Infact, most of us own one or two with that many wheelson them. In the bike world they are called ‘cages’; justan FYI for you there. I will give you an update on theactivities in the next addition, or rather will askBarry Hart to do so as he will hopefully be filling in forme. A delightful reprieve for you all, I am sure.

September usually brings the fall start of a vari-ety of fundraisers around the area that are aimed atthe motorcycling community and clubs. Some areplanned well in advance and some just sort of pop up.The Corps supports most of these charitable events, which in turn raises the awareness of Sahib andShrinedom and brings in supporters for our events.During the fall months, these activities are what weare mainly engaged in for fun, along with the varioustown and city parades around the area. These arealways a good time and give us a chance to show off alittle with our maneuvers and noisy bikes. Althoughthe bikes, not us, always seem to be the crowd pleasers;to them, it is as if the bikes operate themselves. Ithink that they are really waiting to see if we dumpone. You know, like, why do people go to car races?Right, in hopes of seeing a pile up.

Anyway, I would like everyone to welcome ourlatest member to join our one and only Motor Corpsband of brothers, Steve (Eagle) Litschauer. Now, Iwon’t try to tell you anything about Steve, as I am nottoo sure what he wants told and what he doesn’t, so ifyou see him lurking around Sahib, feel free to ask himanything you like. Man, am I glad there is anotherSteve around; now I can say that, ‘it must have beenthe other Steve ‘cause it surely wasn’t me.’

Now onto the fun part, at least for some of us; Imean no cruelty by the following. It just happens to bea tradition. One NOT started by me. That’s right, birthdays and anniversaries. Yahoo. Try to remem-ber to greet these celebrants when you see themaround these dates.

Birthdays: Lady Kim Harrell, October 2; LadyTerri Pullman, October 1; Lady Marcia McDonald,October 11; Lady Dianna Mitchell, October 16; LadyTracy Iversen, October 29; and finally, Noble Mick(Alley Cat) Vorbeck on October 13.

Anniversaries: Hampton (Sambo) and LadyNicole Crimi, October 22; and Lee (Hacker) and KatieJones, November 10.

Congrats to you all having made, eh, shall we say, another one. Now, once again, if your info should bein this edition and is not, it is only because I do nothave it, so just let me know and my records will becorrected immediately. We definitely do not want anyhard feelings floating around, especially if I am thetarget.

Have a great month everyone and don’t forget tobe working on your Halloween costumes……if you re-ally need one that is. Okay, I’m out of here…

After a couple months of relative quiet, things arebuzzing again around the Ag Building (the “Ag

Building” is a property owned by the Venice ShrineClub wherein the Keystone Kops’ vehicles and equip-ment are stored and maintained, and where VSCmeetings and picnics are held.)

Our Keystone Kops joined with the other Sahibparade units in participating in the Englewood Pio-neer Days parade on Labor Day, September 6. Theparade and festival celebrated its 54th yearly obser-vance.

VSC Tuesday lunches resumed September 21 andit was good to get together again for Masonic friend-ship after the summer break. All Shriners are cor-dially invited to join us for lunch on the third Tuesdayof each month at the Venice-Nokomis Elks Lodge,1021 Discovery Way, Nokomis, Florida. Social hourbegins at 11:00 a.m. Lunch at 12:00. Please give VSCPresident Bill Long a call at 408-7950 a couple of daysin advance, if possible. We look forward to greetingyou.

Cleft lip and palate deformities occur when the tissue that forms the upper lip and roof of the mouth fail to join together before birth. The condition is associated with alterations in speech, hearing and facial growth. Cleft lip and palate is corrected by reconstructive surgery and multidisciplinary therapies.

Approximately 5,000 children are born each year in the U.S. with cleft-associated deformities. In fact, facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Children with facial clefts have various interrelated problems involving the brain; the development of the skull and facial bones; the structure of the ear and the ability to hear; the teeth and the ability to chew and eat; and the mouth and nose and the ability to breathe and speak. Reconstruction must be staged with the child’s growth in order to restore the facial skeleton and functionality as completely as possible.

A Common Birth DefectDespite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. For this reason, Shriners Hospitals for Children® added cleft lip and palate to the health care system’s service lines in 2005. Treating cleft and palate problems is a long-term commitment; children require care from birth to adolescence, which fits well in the health care system’s mission of providing family-centered care until the patient’s 18th birthday.

Care for cleft lip and palate is currently available at the Shriners Hospitals for Children® located in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, Los Angeles, Northern California, Portland and Springfield. Multidisciplinary services include surgery, orthodontics, hearing, speech and psychological therapies, and additional supports.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has also partnered with the Humanitarian Foundation of the Grottoes of North America, a Masonic-affiliated fraternal organization. Children with special needs are often excluded from normal childhood dental care, which is important in the successful treatment of cleft lip and palate, and the Foundation will provide appropriate patients who need cleft lip and palate surgery with financial assistance for routine dental care. The partnership has benefited more than 50 Shriners Hospitals for Children® patients.

Cleft lip and palate is a common and serious condition. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to improving care for children with this condition through a comprehensive, coordinated program of clinical excellence, teaching and research.

Mollie Carlson is just one of the many children

with cleft lip and palate who has received

treatment from Shriners Hospitals

for Children®. Today, Mollie is studying

communication disorders in college,

and hopes to one day be a speech-

language pathologist.

Legion of Honorby Jim Fletcher, Commander, [email protected]

Welcome to the Legion of Honor; the Sahib Legionof Honor is made up of veterans from all the

branches of the United States military and friendlyAllied countries. No matter how long you served;active, reserve, or National Guard you are eligible formembership. We are the oldest unit in Shrinedomand very active. We are one of the few marching unitsat Sahib. The LOH normally leads all parades carry-ing The Colors and the flags of the four countries thatmake up the Shrine. If you can’t march, no problem,we have a large trailer that will accommodate manyLOH members. The LOH presents the Colors at allSahib Functions.

Our Ladies, the Legionettes, are very active andare a major financial contributor to the ShrinersHospital for Children in Tampa. Additionally, they

are heavily involved in most of our activities and area contributing factor to many Shrine events. Theymeet once a month, at the same time and place as theLOH meeting. They are quite informal and do theirbusiness in a relaxed and fun way. Your lady will beactively recruited to join the Legionettes.

We meet once a month, except July and August, onthe first Wednesday of each month at 1900 hours atSahib Shriners. Our summer uniform is all whiteduring daylight savings time and winter with blackpants and shoes. Our QM officer has available asupply of used clothing at a very low cost. The LOHMedallion, always worn with the Fez and presentedto you when you are inducted into the LOH, is a veryvisible symbol that you stand shoulder to shoulderwith every other Master Mason who has faithfully

We often have socials or combinedmeetings with our ladies. We have two picnics eachyear which are well attended; not only by LOH familiesbut the Divan too. We sponsor the November Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance with a military theme.

Now you know who we are and what we do in theLegion of Honor at Sahib Shriners. We encourageyour questions. If you are able and willing to contrib-ute to the welfare and duties required of our unit, we

urge you to join us if you are eligible. Contact JimFletcher, Commander at (941)807-2838 or<[email protected]>. Your ladies may contactMary Fletcher (941) 807-4011.

Some things are more important than self. Heroesare men who act in a moment of time on a needgreater than self. Remember, every man has threemen to deal with - the man he thinks he is; the manhe thinks others see and the man he really is.

In the Legion of Honor, it is not the dues you payto be a member, it is the price of eligibility you havealready paid that makes you special.

Marinersby Paul F. Bekkenhuis, Commodore, [email protected]

At the time of this writing, several tropical depres-sions are developing in the Atlantic; hopefully we

will luck out as we did last season. In June, the unit held a picnic at the Venice Shrine

Club’s facility in Venice. A great time was had by allin attendance. We held a special meeting in August atthe Shrine, prior to the weekly luncheon, in order toelect a new treasurer to fill the unexpired term oftreasurer. The Bridge is considering changing our

monthly meetings to the second Thursday of eachmonth prior to the Thursday luncheon; more informa-tion on this topic will follow. On our regular meetingnight in August, we went to dinner at Two Senoritasin Sarasota. The turnout of Mariners and Mate’s wasexceptional.

Hope to see you all at the Commodores Ball nextmonth.

We wanted rain!!! Well, we got it! Several inches ofthat “H20” fell on the Venice area at the end of Augustbefore things really dried out. We needed it. OrientalBand rehearsals are in full swing. The turn-outs wereabove expectations so far. Every so often, we havedinner with our ladies and then we invite them forour meeting and rehearsal. It happened to be “PastaNight” and everyone commented on the quality of the

At thistime, our well wishes go out to Bunny McCall who thissummer had successful surgery and Betty MacCannellwho is recuperating from an accident. Well wishes toBunny and Betty.

December starts with a Winter Ceremonial andthe Parade of Units, the Manatee County Fair, Pipesand Drums Concert and a speech on our ShrinersHospitals for Children.

In January, we have the honor of participating inthe Canadian Snowbirds Extravaganza at the Lake-

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

Ill. Sir Don Vos, Potentate and his Lady Carol, ChiefRabban Tom Millaway and his Lady Kaye and I

and my Lady Stacey Lee made our way to Greenville,South Carolina, August 11 thru 15, for the Southeast-ern Shrine Association Convention.

Stacey and I stayed with our Model-T Unit repre-sentatives participating in competition for which theytook two second prize trophies. We all ate togetherand socialized, and were at the banquet together.

It was an honor to watch and participate in thecamaraderie and hard work needed to put one ofthese competitions on. The unit has to practice faith-fully throughout the year to be able to perform. Iadmit that it seemed like a lot of hard work to

transport the vehicles, keep them spic and span, lineup for inspection and then run the competition. After-wards all had to be reversed. This took a lot ofdedication. My lady and I are very glad we had thisopportunity and will be anticipating the dedication ofour unit’s trophies.

We are back from our vacation and hopefully arerejuvenated for all the upcoming events. It was niceto visit but also nice to get home even though our raingauge seems to be overflowing.

This is all the news for now. May God Bless andkeep you all safe in the palm of His hand.

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Charles M. Levan, 33°, [email protected]

Time flies when you are having fun. What a sum-mer season. Here it is October already. Member-

ship continues to be a primary concern. Getting newmembers and keeping the ones we already have is aprimary goal of Sahib Shriners. Dues notices for 2011are in the mail.

Our lunches are growing every week as our north-ern nobles return to sunny Florida. October’s calen-

dar looks light, until you start adding things into it.There are plenty of activities for everyone.

It is not too soon to be thinking about the holidays. They are coming quickly and will be here sooner thanexpected. Our Sahib Unit and Club Christmas partyis scheduled for Tuesday, December 21. Let’s all gettogether and have a great party.

Legion of Honor Flag Retirement Ceremonyby Malcom H. Van Dyke, II, LOH Adjutant, [email protected]

The Legion of Honor has received permission fromPotentate and LOH member Ill. Sir Don Vos, to

hold its 2nd Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. Theevent is scheduled for Saturday, November 13, 2010after the Unit/Club Heads Meeting and beginningaround 11:00 a.m. in the back parking lot of SahibShrine temple. Ill. Sir Don will retire the first flag.

Last year at our 1st annual ceremony, we verycarefully and respectfully retired 200 flags.

Sahib Shriners, their wives and widows are eli-gible to bring old, tattered, ripped, discolored, wornout American Flags of any size, military unit’s flags, and state flags for retirement. Please put them foldedup into a paper or plastic bag and bring to Mary in theSahib office. Mary has been instructed to not accepta loose flag. That is disgraceful and shows disrespect.

Please do not leave the flags by the back door as thiscreates a fire hazard. This event is open only toSahib Shriners and not the general public.

All Shriners are encouraged to come to the eventon November 13 and retire your own flag. It is easy todo and you may take all the pictures you want. Thepre-ceremony that the LOH uses contains speakingparts that make this part of the overall ceremonymoving and colorful. This year a local BSA Troop ofthe Boy Scouts of America will be performing theactual retirement ceremony. The BSA has their veryown ceremony for this event also and they do getcredit for performing the ceremony.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can be devastating. Generally resulting in some degree of paralysis and disruption of the body’s voluntary and involuntary actions, the impact and implications of SCI last a lifetime.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to providing expert orthopaedic and rehabilitative care to its patients with SCI. However, being able to offer the best care is dependent on accurate assessment and diagnosis, which requires being able to determine the exact level and extent of injury.

In pediatric SCI, this has been especially difficult due to the lack of pediatric-based tools; the standard test for assessing SCI was designed for adults. Researchers have found that age 6 may be the youngest age children are developmentally able to understand the instructions, and older children do not react well to some aspects of the test.

To fill the void in pediatric evaluations, researchers at Shriners

Hospitals for Children®, led by MJ Mulcahey, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation services and clinical research at the Philadelphia hospital, established the first assessment guidelines applicable to kids with SCI as young as 3 months old.

Funded by research grants from Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the pediatric version of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury, known as WeeStep, is an electronic learning module that compliments the established assessment program for adults with SCI. The WeeStep provides evidence-based methods to evaluate and classify the level and implications of SCI in children, based on established childhood developmental guidelines.

These new guidelines will help professionals determine the level and extent of SCI and allow for reasonable predictions or expectations for neurological recovery and for developing the best medical care plan for each patient. The WeeStep is available to medical professionals world-wide via the American Spinal Injury Association Web site.

Another effort to increase understanding of SCI and related problems is the establishment of the Pediatric Research Center, which opened in September 2009 in Philadelphia. The 23,000 square-foot facility, located in the new Temple University Medical School Education and Research Building across the street from Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia, will be used primarily for research in neural (nerve) repair and

rehabilitation, including the spinal cord, neuromuscular injury and brain injury. The Center is under the direction of Michael Selzer, M.D., former director of rehabilitation research and development for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Temple University and Shriners Hospitals for Children® aim to establish a translational research program where basic science developments can benefit children with neuromuscular conditions. Drs. Selzer and Mulcahey have strategically planned to connect basic science to clinical research so that new knowledge will be offered to children receiving care from Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Currently, the health care system is funding approximately 12 research studies at the three hospitals with SCI programs involving different aspects of SCI, ranging from cell repair to quality of life issues. In addition, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® share their expertise through academic affiliations at noteworthy institutions and by providing opportunities for post-doctoral researchers.

The emphasis on research and education is indicative of Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s total commitment to determining, as well as providing, the best care for children with SCI.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® depends on donations to fund all its programs, including research. For information on ways you can support this effort, please visit www.donate2SHC.org.

In 2009, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California identified a gene in mice that may uncover the fundamental mechanisms of cleft lip and palate, a common birth defect that affects about 5,000 children annually in the U.S. The discovery was made by a research team led by Chengji Zhou, Ph.D., a principal investigator for the Institute of Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM), a collaborative research program of Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California and the University of California, Davis.

The research revealed that all of the mice with a disrupted gene named Lrp6 developed a cleft lip and cleft palate and showed the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved. The findings of Dr. Zhou and his colleagues were published in the September 2009 issue of the scientific journal, Development.

“This discovery may someday allow scientists and doctors to identify the mutations in related human genes that may cause cleft lip and cleft palate in children and to find new drug targets to prevent this kind of birth defect during pregnancy,” said David Pleasure, M.D., director of research at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California and the IPRM. “Our hope is that scientific discoveries made by Dr. Zhou and the team of researchers working at Shriners Hospitals for Children® will one day transform the lives of children faced with congenital birth defects and other physical challenges.”

A New Treatment Additional research in the field of cleft lip and palate includes the development of a new method of treatment of patients with wide cleft lip and palate. Created by Beth Roscoe and Philip Stoddard, M.D., of Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Springfield, the innovative process helps close the gap prior to cleft lip surgery.

A plaster model of the patient’s lip and palate is scanned into a computer. Then, using CAD/CAM (computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacturing), a series of palate-shape corrections are created on the computer. The corrections are designed to serially reduce the gap, taking growth into consideration.

These digital models guide the manufacturing of the series of corrective appliances for the patient. It generally takes about 12 corrective steps to achieve the desired result (each device closes the gap by about half a millimeter on each side, and is worn for a week). Ideally, this method is meant to begin when the patient is about 1 month old and takes from 10 to 15 weeks to complete.

Research Provides Better Understanding and Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate

(left) Dr. Zhou’s research is contributing to a better understanding of the possible genetic causes of cleft lip and palate.

(right) Dr. Stoddard’s research has led to a new, less invasive treatment for cleft lip and palate. Here, he looks at a series of corrective devices used in the treatment.

www.shrinershospitals.org

OSQ310RPBU

Saving Time and MoneyThere are several benefits to using this procedure, according to Dr. Stoddard. The computer-assisted design provides consistent results; it allows for expected normal growth; the appliances are not surgically inserted, therefore, no anesthesia is required; clinic wait times are reduced; and if patients live far from the hospital, several appliances in the series can be given to the family at a time, reducing the number of visits to the hospital. The new process saves time and expense.

Shriners Hospitals for Children®

has a patent pending. These research projects

exemplify Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s commitment to improving care for children with cleft lip and plalate through a comprehensive, coordinated program, including research.

Happy Anniversaryby John Wm. McNaughton, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander, Scottish Rite NJ

Anniversaries are welded into our very souls or soit seems until we forget one. These days when we

commemorate milestones in our lives we have a ten-dency to focus on what has been and not what is tocome. In recent times we note that the Grand Lodgeof Massachusetts celebrated its 275th anniversary asthe oldest Grand Lodge in America; the SupremeCouncil, 33°, Southern Jurisdiction, celebrated its200th anniversary in 2001; this jurisdiction is pre-paring to celebrate its own 200th anniversary in 2013and our publication, The Northern Light, is just thismonth celebrating its 40th anniversary.

When The Northern Light was first publishedback in February, 1970, 40 years ago, Richard M.Nixon was President of the United States, gasolinesold for about 36 cents a gallon, hamburger about 99cents a pound and bread (sliced even) 16 cents a loaf.General Motors had a 60 percent market share of newvehicle sales in the U.S. and the Scottish Rite hadwell over a million members. On April 1, 1970, theDow Jones Industrial average stood at 792.

How drastically most things have changed 40 yearslater except for our Masonic fraternity. All would bewell with some of the traditions if the influence andimportance of the fraternity at large were increasingat a rate seen in our wholesale prices, but they arenot. While the general population of the United Stateshas doubled since 1959, the Masonic fraternity, forsome known and some yet unknown reasons, has losttwo-thirds of its members. Some of our Masonic lead-ers have offered a wide range of excuses as to why thisdecline has occurred. Perhaps the real issue facing usis the value of the perceived product we are attempt-ing to sell in the 21st century.

In Socratic fashion, let us ask ourselves a few keyquestions about ourselves as we look forward insteadof backward at the fraternity and our next importantanniversary. Where will we be as a fraternity in 40years? Where will we find our necessary Masonicleaders? Will future Masonic leaders enforce more

“senseless rules” and rely on more “mindless bureau-cracies” in a vain attempt to control the behavior ofits members? Or will those leaders once again be ofthe stature of the free thinkers like those who wereresponsible for world wide social and political changessuch as our own American Revolution? Or will theirleadership skills continue to be measured by how wellthey memorize ritual? What will be the message ofour degrees and how will that message be communi-cated to our members? Who will support our Masoniccharities? Will there be another author similar toDan Brown to say kind things about the MasonicFraternity? (Wait a minute, do we really need an-other novel or movie to tell the world about our craft,or like the ghost of Elvis, has the enjoyment andinspiration of the Masonic fraternity left the build-ing?). Will we be the fraternity of choice? Will there bethe vision and wisdom to continue remodeling ourTemple? Or, unlike our operative forefathers, will wecontinue to close our doors rather than change?

Has the Masonic fraternity attempted to packageits core values with the decorative wrapping paper ofritual and the ribbons of charities? Today we mustunwrap that package and get back to the real trea-sure we all seek — the fraternal side of the Masonicfraternity.

As Scottish Rite Masons, on this special anniver-sary, we reaffirm our motto, “Spes Mea in Deo Est.”We know that with a Masonic vision for our future, there will be many memorable anniversaries aheadfor both The Northern Light and our members.

Brethren, Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote,“Greatness is not in where we stand, but in whatdirection we are moving. We must sail sometimeswith the wind and sometimes against it — but sail wemust, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”

Scottish Rite – Humility - the greatest of virtuesby Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, [email protected]

York Rite – Vision of Masonryby B. John Ross, KYCH, [email protected]

Let us consider again the “Vision of Masonry” andreview what a Mason, dedicated and true, believes in;what he stands for and should exemplify in his dailylife before his fellow man. As we mention time-hon-ored landmarks and teachings, let us examine ourown attitudes, activities and lives to see if we havemeasured up, sincerely and fully, to the duties im-posed upon us by our oaths at the altar.

A truly informed and dedicated Mason believes inthese fundamental truths:

First, in God, a Supreme Being, who governs thislife and assures us of a continued life after the grave.Second, in freedom - freedom of the individual toworship, to work, to govern him, and to fear no man, freedom coupled with the responsibility of safeguard-ing the freedoms of other persons. Third, in morality- being the great and moral teaching of the Holy Bibleand of our fraternity.

Masons believe in a Supreme Being, in God. Wegive lip service to this statement, but how do we standspiritually in this materialistic world? Do our acts, our conduct and our words show that we are genu-inely and totally committed to this faith?

Most of our coins and our currency still bear thestatement “In God We Trust.”

Our lodges must be opened and closed with aninvocation to the Supreme Being. Do we as individu-als; and a nation, really and truly have this faith in aDeity and do we evidence it in our daily life?

Today we see more and more beautiful and com-modious churches, modern and spacious publicschools, large and grand government buildings, andmore spacious and modern Masonic Temples; but atthe same time, we see many aspects of the Americanethical, moral, business and political life today thatare sickening. Conditions are worsening at manypoints, while it is hard to find improvements that aremore than microscopic. Masons have a right and aduty to be concerned about the way standards ofprobity and righteousness have dropped, generationby generation. The “Image of Masonry’ is uncertainand unfavorable when Masons stray or deviate fromthis belief in the Supreme Being and turn the lodgeinto a mere club or civic organization. Unfortunately,at times, members are admitted to our fraternity whohave no sincere belief in and devotion to these spiri-tual ideals. Our prestige and our standing inevitablydeteriorate in any such competition for popularity atthe expense of weakening the foundations of theOrder (Author unknown). (to be continued.)

Humility as defined by Webster is the state orquality of being humble; i.e., not proud or

haughty, not arrogant or aggressive. Exercising hu-mility is most certainly the first step toward theacquisition of truth as it shows us our own faults andmakes us aware of our need for knowledge as well aspreparing us to receive it.

In the Gospel of Luke (Chapter 14) the DivineMaster tells his disciples to take the lowest place atthe banquet table so they may be elevated by theirhost, but warns them that, should they come in andtake the most prestigious seat, they may be embar-rassed when asked to move. We are being told that weshould not assume that we are the most worthy, butrather that we should sit in the lowest place, toapproach our God with humility and he will raise usto our rightful place at the table.

When we are told the first shall be last and the lastshall be first, and those that are exalted will behumbled, he is really saying that God’s love is thegreat leveling force, that we are all equal in the loveof our creator.

Throughout our Scottish Rite Degrees, this threadof humility is constantly interwoven. In the introduc-tion, we read that “the virtues of man are the quali-ties of God imperfectly demonstrated. We travel thepath to perfection with humility, because he hasshown us that path and guided us by the surestroute.” In the 14th, 18th, 21st, 25th, 27th and 29thdegrees, we are reminded in many ways to exercisehumility. To ever be conscious of our own faults, toserve God by humility, meekness, gentleness andkindness, trusting in God in the treatment of ourfellow men and slow to entertain evil thoughts, beingthankful to God, patient, forgiving, generous andmerciful. With these virtues, we cannot lose unlesswe are false to ourselves. These are the lessons pre-sented throughout our Scottish Rite Degrees, rein-forcing the lessons taught by our Divine Master of theBanquet Table.

Remember our Scottish Rite Degrees will be con-ferred on November 6 and 13. The degrees will rein-force the teachings of Masonry to the new candidatesand refresh the lessons for those who are alreadymembers. Let’s get those petitions in so we can havea banner class.

Whenasked what DeMolay is we often hear, “it is an orderfor young men founded by Frank Land in 1919 whichencourages fellowship, leadership and patriotism inour young men.” But this leaves something out. Whoreally is a DeMolay?

An article in the Spring/Summer 2003 IllinoisMason, written by John Zink says it best. BrotherJohn is a DeMolay.

Who is the DeMolay boy? He’s the fellow between the ages of 12 and 21 who

has dedicated himself to God, his country and to hisparents.

He’s the fellow who is privileged to give expressionto these virtues in DeMolay service.

He’s the fellow who believes in spiritual values, and has the courage to live them everyday.

He’s the fellow we ask to fight for our countrywhen it is in danger, and the measure of his service isthe measure of our security.

Suncoast Communities Blood Bank(SCBB) witnessed a new record in its

61 year history—the largest response toa one day blood drive. More than 450people signed up to donate blood at thesecond annual Pints for Play II on May27th in Sarasota and Nokomis. Peoplegave blood to dominate the airwaves ofWSRZ 107.9FM with song requests oftheir choice or business mentions.

“Pints for Play was a monumentalday! In one single day, the WSRZ eventenabled us to meet nearly a week’s sup-ply for area medical facilities,” Dr. MarkJ. Magenheim, CEO and Medical Direc-tor of SCBB said. “This tremendous com-munity support is humbling. Our donorsand the team at WSRZ are exceptional.”

WSRZ partnered to turn over the sta-tion to blood donors for twelve continu-ous hours in a commercial free format. While radio history was made last yearwith this unique broadcast format, itwas the increased response from the com-munity that set a new record this year.SCBB saw a 54% increase over the 2009results (295). The amount of blood dona-

“When we decided to hold a sequel wehad no idea how much we would shatterlast year’s collection record. I am amazedby the response from our listeners. Butthen again, our listeners are amazingpeople,” remarked Christina Crane, co-host of the WSRZ morning show.

“It is inspiring to live and work in acommunity that just keeps giving andgiving,” commented David Jones, co-hostof the WSRZ morning show. “It goes toshow that extraordinary things happenwhen a generous group comes together.”

was airlifted from a local hospital to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Cincinnati. The burns on his body were so extensive he was not expected to survive.

During the next seven months, which he spent in the hospital, he underwent multiple surgeries and grueling physical therapy. His medical team was pleased to see tremendous progress as time went by, and was thrilled when he became well enough to become an outpatient.

Danny and his mother relocated to Ohio so he could continue his treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Cincinnati. When he was ready to return to school, the hospital’s school re-entry program eased the transition, providing his classmates with lessons on empathy and acceptance. Danny, who is extremely outgoing, has made friends easily and is enjoying life as a student. With the help of his teachers and fellow classmates, he started a program to collect aluminum can tabs to benefit the health care system.

More SurprisesTaylor’s mother joined him onstage after the premiere of the video to personally thank the Shriners for the expert medical care provided to her son. Then, 2009-2010 Imperial Public Relations Committee Chairman Mike Severe presented Taylor with a handheld camcorder to thank him for sharing his story. He also sent one to Danny prior to the event.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children®, we are proud to have heroes like Taylor and Danny among us every day.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® patient Taylor Long, 19, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, made a surprise appearance at the 136th Imperial Council Session – the Shriners’ annual international convention – in Toronto on July 7. Danny Happy, 13, of Cincinnati, Ohio, provided a video message to the crowd of several thousand Shriners.

Danny and Taylor are featured in the Shriners Hospitals for Children® patient success video “Heroes Among Us,” which premiered at the event. Immediately following the video, Taylor sang for the audience.

The program was an opportunity for the kids to thank the Shriners for the pediatric specialty care they receive at Shriners Hospitals for Children®. The expertise and support provided by the health care system has given them the strength and skills needed to make their dreams a reality.

Taylor LongTaylor was born with bilateral fibular hemimelia, which means he is missing the calf bones in his legs. Doctors initially told Taylor’s mother, Karen, that he would probably never walk. Luckily, a friend of Taylor’s grandfather, a Shriner named Bryce Gibson, recommended Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Canada.

Taylor became a patient when he was just one month old; his family and doctors decided the best

treatment was to amputate his feet and have him use prosthetics to walk. He was provided extensive physical therapy as a young child to help him learn to walk and balance.

Despite multiple surgeries to correct the growth of his legs, Taylor enjoyed an active childhood. The rehabilitation services department at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Canada played a central role in supporting his interests, designing special prosthetics for each activity he pursued. He learned to swim with the help of special swimming legs that drain water and help him walk on sand. When he began riding horses at age 9, they made him prosthetic legs especially for horseback riding. In 2007, Taylor competed with riders from around the world at the Lendon Gray International Dressage Festival.

The confidence Taylor gained from these experiences has helped him pursue his greatest passions, drama and singing. He is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in voice and drama at Dalhousie University in Halifax and is studying opera.

Danny HappyWhen a plane crashed into Danny’s Sanford, Fla., home in 2007, his life was changed forever. He sustained second- and third degree burns over 95 percent of his body and tragically, his four-year-old sister Gabriela was killed in the horrific accident. Only hours after the crash, Danny

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofDecember 10, 2009, they have collected 65,743 lbs., for a total of$31,275.13 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donatesmall amounts of cash at any time.

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind ofcollection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?
