Following the serv- ice, there will be picture taking with the new Keiro members and a group p i c t u re of all the Keiro members. Bento Lunch will be provided to all Keiro members. Senior appreciation is an annual serv- ice honoring all are seniors, which is admirable and good, however, we need to honor them all year around. Why? It is the seniors who during their youth sacrificed their time and energy to provide each of us our temple where we can learn and experience the teach- ings of Buddha and Shinran. Even in their senior years, they contribute to any cause the best they can, to help the cause of our temple and organizations. They continue to give from their heart s and often with limited income. They give back each and every day to assure the growth and vitality of the temple, so that each and every one of us can come and learn about the teachings, everyone, and ourselves. They are the prime examples of one who participates, shares, and gives. They deserve to be honored everyday. So, on Senior Appreciation Day, let us all come and give thanks to all the visible and unseen things that seniors contribute to our temple and us. Reflection: How often do we thank our seniors? How often do we thank our fam- ily members? How often do we take for granted what they give to us? It is time to act, now. BCO Campaign T he BCO BCA 21st Century Campaign Every Member Participation fund raising has begun. Every member who has yet to donate/pledge will be personally asked to participate by Board Members. We hope to have 100% participation in this very important project. We hope to conclude the campaign by the end of this year. We ask for you help and participation. As of July 31, 2007 a 141 members have already donated/pledged to the campaign. We have on the BCA roll a total of 376 registered members. On July, 9, 2007 the BCO Board Meeting was held at the Jodo Shinshu Center. At that time the BCA Youth Retreat was being held. We attended the Evening Service conducted by the youths. There were 12 part i c i p a n t s , who attended the weeklong re t reat. Participants in attendance came from Orange County (1), Seattle (1), Oregon (1), Idaho-Oregon (1), Palo Alto (2), Florin (1), San Fernando Valley (1), Salinas (2), and Enmanji (1). The Board members were impressed as to the quality of the program. These and many more programs are being conducted at the new JSC. Our p a rticipation in the campaign will continue to support these ongoing programs. Members who wish to participate in the campaign through the use of credit cards are encouraged to do so. A form is printed out for your convenience. Let’s all participate in the Campaign for the future of Shin Buddhism in America.

Buddhist Church of Oakland’sannual Senior Appreciation Day

(Keirokai) will be observed on Sunday,October 21, 2007 from 10 a.m. NewKeiro members who have turned orwill turn 75 years of age will be hon-ored at the service. Following the serv-ice, there will be picture taking withthe new Keiro members and a groupp i c t u re of all the Keiro members.Bento Lunch will be provided to allKeiro members.

Senior appreciation is an annual serv-ice honoring all are seniors, which isadmirable and good, however, we needto honor them all year around. Why?

It is the seniors who during theiryouth sacrificed their time and energ yto provide each of us our temple wherewe can learn and experience the teach-ings of Buddha and Shinran. Even intheir senior years, they contribute toany cause the best they can, to help thecause of our temple and org a n i z a t i o n s .They continue to give from their heart sand often with limited income.

The price is$31.99 per person, which includesadmission and lunch in their specialpicnic area. The Dharma School willpay for the Dharma School students.Parking cost is separate and is $15.00per car. The First Dharma School Service wasconducted on September 9, followedby a Welcome Back Luncheon. Thankyou to Mollie Yoneyama and D a i s yT s u j i m o t o for chairing the luncheon.As always, you both do a terrific job.This year, the Dharma School will try alittle variation on classes this year. On afew Sundays a month, the classes willbe taught as a group rather than indi-vidual grades and concentrate on cer-tain themes i.e. “Get to Know Yo u rTemple” (studying of the altar), theFootsteps of Shakyamuni Buddha” and“Shinran Shonin, Founder of JodoShinshu”. We hope that it will be infor-mational for students and parents aswell as giving some of the teachers ab reak from time to time. If there areany parents who would like to assistwith the group activities, please contactMaya Lawrence.

Oakland’s Nippongo Gakuen, forstudents age 6 to high school,

We anticipate the following series ofclasses to meet the increasing numberof students and their varying ages andproficiency levels:

Beginning 1: beginning Japanese forchildren 1st – 4th grades; listeningcomprehension and simple conversa-tional ability through games, songs,elementary school-based activities.

Beginning 2: students fro mBeginning 1, or those with little or nof o rmal training in Japanese (4/5thgrade through middle school age) –focus on hiragana & katakana; simplesentence construction; listening com-p rehension; simple conversationalability. Textbook: to be determined

Beginning 1A: little or no form a ltraining in Japanese (6th grade thro u g hhigh school age) – focus on hiragana &katakana; simple sentence constru c-tion; listening comprehension; simpleconversational ability. Te x t b o o k :Genki 1. – beginning chapters

Intermediate: proficiency with hira-gana and katakana; simple kanji; basicJapanese grammar; and listening profi-ciency (middle school age.) Textbook:Genki 1 – later chapters

Advanced: reading and writing pro-ficiency at a minimum high schoolJapanese 2/3 level; simple conversa-tional ability. (high school age).

Textbook: Genki 2The Gakuen strives to incorporate

Japanese cultural activities with lan-guage learning through special ses-sions with outside volunteers. Tuitionis $200 for the Fall trimester; $150each for Winter and Spring trimesters.There is one-time annual fee for sup-plies of $30. The Gakuen meets everySaturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The Youth Club held it’s firstb o a rd meeting of the 2007-

2008 basketball season on Tuesdaynight, August 28th at the church. Wewill be fielding nine teams this year.

A B boys team (merged with BerkeleyOhtani), a C gold boys team, a D boysteam, an E Gold boys team, an E bro n z ecoed team, a C gold girls team, two Dgirls teams and an E silver girls team.

We have approximately 90 playersmany who are church members.Practices are scheduled to begin inmid September and applications arenow due. Please submit them to LindaNakamura, Phil Li or David Hirota.Once again, no church member willbe denied a roster spot as long as anapplication has been submitted beforethe league deadline.

If you are interested in having yourchild play this season, please contacteither Linda, Phil or myself. We havea great program that stresses sports-manship, physical fitness and friend-ship. Youth Club basketball is just oneof the many services our church pro-vides for its members.
