2007 Rules SERIES BULLETIN 1. An official Great American Solo Series (GASS) Bulletin will be published periodically (at least eight

times per year) in hardcopy and on the GASS website during the season, and sent to all currently active GASS event competitors, sponsors, and any Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) member (upon request). The GASS Bulletin will contain the following:

• Advertising for Series Sponsors, • Flyers of Upcoming Events and Year-end Banquet, • Schedules of all CenDiv and GLDiv Solo Events, • Points of Contact for the following:

- National SCCA Solo Administrators, - GASS Sanctioning Body (Committee), - CenDiv and GLDiv Solo Administrators, - SCCA Regional/Club Solo Administrators.

• GASS Event Articles and Event Results, • Year-end Points Standings for all competitors eligible for GASS Championship Awards, • General and Special interest articles and announcements (Editorial license applies), • Advertising of the following:

- Flyers and Entry Forms with the following fee structure: • Free for GASS-Sanctioned Events, • $25/Page for Other Events.

- Classified Ads: - $5/Two (2) Issues. - Commercial Ads:

• Business Card - $10/Issue, $75/Year, • ½ Page - $35/Issue, $250/Year, • Full Page - $50/Issue, $400/Year, • Two Page Spread - $75/Issue, $600/Year.

- All fees for advertising are due upon ad placement. - Make checks payable to “Great American Solo Series”.

SERIES POINTS & AWARDS 2. The Great American Solo Series will be comprised of several (typically 6 to 8) Solo events. This

number will be set before the beginning of the competition season, but may be subject to change due to circumstances beyond the GASS Committee’s control (eg. loss of an event site).

3. GASS Year-end Points and Championship Awards will be awarded as follows:

DNF ..................................................... = 20 Points, DNS (one day of a two-day event) ...... = 10 Points, DNS (one-day event) or DSQ ............. = 0 Points.

• Competitors who complete at least one timed run on each day of an event will receive a mini-mum of 20 points.

• Class Year-end ties will be resolved by awarding duplicate awards. • Competitors must compete in at least three (3) GASS events in the same Car Class to qualify for

Year-end Awards. Only one award will be given to competitors who qualify in more than one Car Class.

• Competitors' best GASS event finishes will be used to compute Year-end Points in each Car Class based on the table below. The score for each event used for Year-end Points will be rounded to the nearest whole point. Maximum score for non-winners is 99 points.

• Year-end Awards will be distributed in accordance with the current SCCA Solo Rule Book, based on the average number of competitors in each Car Class or the total number of Year-end eligible entrants in each Car Class, whichever provides more awards. Non-eligible competitors finishing in a Year-end Award position will not be awarded a Year-end Award and the award positions for the associated Class will be increased by one if more eligible competitors exist in the Class.

• Rookie of the Year Awards will be awarded in accordance with GASS Rules. To be eligible, com-petitors must have never competed in more than two (2) GASS (or predecessor CENDIV Series) events during any competition year. Rookie Points will be awarded beginning with the event at which the competitor declares eligibility. The index shown below will be used to adjust competi-tors’ times for award of points for each event.

4. Year-end Championship Awards will be presented at an Awards & Dinner Banquet to be held after completion of the GASS competition season. The Banquet time and place will be announced in the GASS Bulletin.

EVENTS 5. Event organizers must submit a completed GASS Event Bid form before being considered for a GASS

event. Bid forms may be obtained from the Regional Liaison or from the GASS Website and should be returned to the Regional Liaison.

6. All events must be endorsed by the GASS Organization. 7. All events must adhere to the current SCCA Solo Rules and GASS Committee directives (including the

GASS Rules herein). It is STRONGLY recommended that events be structured per SCCA Divisional or National Championship procedures (except for formal SCCA sanctioning).

8. Event organizers must forward official results containing the following information for each entrant to the GASS Pointskeeper within seven (7) days of the event:

- Entrant’s Full Name, - Car Number, - SCCA Region/Club Affiliation, - Results of any Protests, - Membership Number with Expiration Date, - Raw Times with Penalties for Each Run. - Car Class, Make, Model, Color,

It is preferred that the information described above be provided the day of the event if possible. If a computer is used for registration and/or event results, then a floppy disk or CD and a hard copy printout is preferred. Results will be published in the GASS Bulletin, which will be delivered to all entrants; so the event organizers do not need to publish or distribute results.

9. Event organizers must send the following information to the GASS Bulletin Editor within seven (7) days after their event:

• An Event Summary Article (preferably via e-mail), • Entrant’s Full Name, Address and Phone Number, • Entrant’s Membership Number with Expiration Date and SCCA Region/Club of Record.

COMPETITORS 10. Competitors may enter each event only once and may not enter an event in more than one Car Class. 11. Competitors must be CenDiv or GLDiv SCCA members prior to the last event they run to earn Year-

end Awards. 12. The Official GASS Logo Sticker must be displayed in an upright position on both sides of each com-

petitor's vehicle during GASS event competition.

From the Chair…… Where has the 2007 solo season gone?! It seems that is was just last week that we were making our way to Lexington, Kentucky for the first event in the Great American Solo Series! We’ve been back from Oscoda where the Saginaw Valley Region hosted the last event in the Series a week now! The Series competition is complete for the year and all that is left is the year end meet-ing, awards banquet and trophy presentation! Yes – the results are in and are posted on the Series website – soloseries.org. There were a number of class winners that had been determined fairly early in the season but a few that needed that last event to determine the champion. An interesting fact that Jim Zeisler brought to our attention is that Ray Thomas in CM ran every single series event this year! I want to thank everyone that supported the Series this year. Our total numbers were a little lower than we had hoped for but that sure doesn’t take away from the competition and the quality of events that were avail-able. As you will see elsewhere in the bulletin, the year end town hall meeting and awards banquet is scheduled for October 27th in Bowling Green, Ohio. The banquet takes place at Snook’s Dream Car Garage. An accurate head count for the dinner will be needed at least 10 days before the banquet so please take the time now to sign up. As I have mentioned since the begin-ning of the year – there is a home football game at Bowling Green. Currently, there are NO motel rooms in Bowling Green but rooms are still available in Perrysburg, a Toledo suburb, that is just 12 miles north on I-75. Also, if your region is interested in hosting a series event in 2008, bring the bid to the town hall meeting. The bid information is also available on the Series website. As with all volunteer organizations, there is the need to occa-sionally find “new blood”. A number of us on the committee

have been around since the earth was still warm. Some on the committee have suggested that they need a break so we are still looking for people to volunteer. Some positions require a lot of time – such as the points keeper and we do have a person that has offered to take over that position. Rich Hughes from Ken-tucky Region will be the new Pointskeeper for 2008. Rich runs in DSP, won that class and also is the Rookie of the Year! Thanks to Rich for volunteering for this job. Thanks to Jim Zeisler for filling this position for the last three years. It is a lot of work – more than most people realize. Personally, I will be stepping down as the chair person for the committee. Don’t be surprised if some day, when you least expect it, I come up, tap you on the shoulder and say “Can we talk?” We have a lot of great people in this sport with much to give back. Please con-sider volunteering for the Committee in some manner. Thanks again to our Series sponsors – SoloPerformance.com, WMC Ultralite, Mid-Atlantic Motorsport and MyAuto-Events.com. Without these four sponsors, it would be impossi-ble to put out the Bulletin and have trophies at the end of the year. Please support them whenever possible as they are so much a part of our sport. As this Bulletin will be getting to most people after they have returned from the Solo National Championships, I want to ex-tend congratulations to all trophy winners and National Champi-ons. I hope that everyone that attended had a good time in Topeka!

Note from the Editor…. Whew! Last month’s Bulletin was 52 pages, and this month’s will be much shorter, but still very informative with the results of the final two events in the Series and the Year End Points. I want to sincerely thank all the people who have submitted articles, points, results, schedules, and information this year. Without their help, the Bulletin would not exist. That reminds me of a subject I will be addressing at the town hall meeting on October 27th -- is there still a need for the bulletin. Should we continue to send everyone a bulletin or should it just be put out on the website each month for everyone to look at and print out when necessary. I would like your opin-ion on this subject, and if you cannot make it to the town hall meeting/banquet, please, please email me at [email protected] and let me know your thoughts. The banquet is at a new place -- Snook’s Dream Cars in Bowling Green, Ohio, and I hear it is a really neat place. FULL ALERT AT OSCODA – SAGINAW VALLEY REGION – 8 SEPTEMBER 2007

TEN-HUT! I want the attention of all new recruits and all other seasoned troops! If you missed the FULL ALERT AT OSCODA, you missed one great solo maneuver! The event took place at Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda on 8 September 2007 at 0930 hours. Although there was no official “mess hall”, grub was served during registration in the morning and again at 1200 hours. We won’t talk about the latrines………….. Gusty winds on Friday required the latrines to be relocated but all was A-OK on Saturday. OK, that’s about as much military as I can do! Saginaw Valley Region hosted the final event in the 2007 Great American Solo Series at Wurtsmith in Os-coda. The event format was three runs in the morning; a 2 hour break for lunch, which was burgers and hot dogs on the grill cooked by Chuck Tate and his corps, (thanks Chuck – good eats!) course reconfiguration for afternoon runs and time for competitors to walk the course; then afternoon competition with four runs. Friday’s weather for the test and tune was very windy but Sat-urday was an absolutely perfect day! There were a total of 79 recruits- I mean, entrants – and several classes for the Great American Solo Series were finalized at this event. In SS, Al Chan wrapped up the series with his win. The GM Performance team came again with eleven drivers in various classes. Bill Rietow in AS and Laurence Lemaire in CSL both won their classes and championship for the series with this event. In FS, Marcus and Jennifer Merideth competed in their new Ford Mustang Shelby GT, with Marcus winning the event and also the GASS championship. Stephen Dormann, in his Nissan Sentra, won HS and again, this win gave him the series championship. There was a good battle in CSP, one of the bigger classes at the event. Long time friends and competi-tors, Stacey DeSpelder and Raleigh Boreen, battled it out and in the end, Ra-leigh won the event but not with some tough competition from Stacey. ESP was the couples class, with the Feighners and the Myers competing against each other. Dave Feighner won the event and this gave him the GASS cham-pionship, also. Lisa Krueger and Mike Burgess, FSPL and FSP, won their classes and the series championship. In fact, if you look at the results else-where in the bulletin, you will see that Lisa’s total time would have given her 1st place in FSP…………(sorry, Mike!) (Continued on page 15)

CM was fun to watch with this event being the ne that would finally determine which driver would take home the championship in the series. In the end, Don Elzinga took the 1st place trophy home and also won the series championship. Ray Thomas took 3rd at the event but he will be 2nd in the GASS series. Ray Thomas is the ONLY person that ran every single event in the Great American Solo Series! FM had a good battle with four competitors and Dave Phaneuf ended up with the win. In STX, Jason Marsh in his Chevy Monte Carlo took the win and also the championship for the series. The Redwine family – David, John and Katherine – brought home wins in their respective classes – BS, STU and STUL. Congrats to them and to John on clinching the GASS championship. F125, as always, was entertaining! Larry MacLeod, Keith Roberts and Mike Burns put on a great show, with Larry taking home the gold and also the series championship. There were four competitors between FJA and FJB – the Myers-MacLeod classes! Jacob Myers won in FJA and Jackson MacLeod in FJB. SM and SML was won by the same car – Andy Lieber and Valerie Furrer in their respective classes and this finalized the series for them also. Fastest raw time for the weekend went to Larry MacLeod and PAX time went to Andy Lieber. You can check out the series website at soloseries.org to see the entire PAX list. All in all, it was a great weekend! Thanks to everyone in Saginaw Valley Re-gion for all of their hard work. I’m not going to even attempt to list everyone because I will leave some out. This event wouldn’t have taken place without the help of those in the region who care. With this series event hosted by Saginaw Valley Region, this puts them in an elite situation. SVR has hosted a series event every single year except 1986 – there are just two regions that have been involved in the series that long and they are Detroit Region and Saginaw Valley Region. Hoosier decals must be visible on both sides and on the front of the vehicle. Mid-Atlantic Motorsport decals must be visible on both sides of the vehicle. The par-ticipant must supply his/her name, social security number, current address, tele-phone number, car model, competition class and tire size(s) when claiming an award. Redemption forms are available from Mid-Atlantic Motorsport. All SOLO classes are eligible except for F125 and Street tire classes. Freight, mounting or balancing is not included with tire awards. Participant must comply with all applica-ble GASS Series rules and regulations. All tire awards must be claimed by 12/01/2007.

Awards The awards are based on the official 2007 GASS Championship Series yearend trophy positions in each class. In the event of a tie, awards will be distributed the same as the GASS trophy positions. 1-3 yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 1 tire 4-6 yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 1 tire, 2nd place - 1 set (4) tire services 7+ yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 2 tires, 2nd place - 1 tire, 3rd place - 1 set
