CHAPTER 4The Pushaway

The pushaway is important because it determines the speed and direction of your shot. This skill puts you in charge of the ball. developing and using a good, solid pushaway gives you a distinct advantage over any bowler who chooses to ignore this skill!

TechniqueKeeping your hand positioned under the ball, push it directly toward its target with both hands until your arm is completely straight.Tip: Like the stance, this skill can be practiced at home. A mirror isn’t even necessary, just a target. The act of pushing the ball away until your arm is straight must become a habit!

DiscussionYes, that’s really all there is to performing the pushaway! It is by far the simplest and easiest skill to master, yet it is the most underutilized. There are a few things you need to know about this skill in order to understand both its importance and how to use it effectively. - For the sake of your timing, if you use a three-step delivery, the pushaway should begin before you take the first step. If you use a four-step delivery, it should begin simultaneously with the first step. If you use a five-step delivery, it should begin with the second step. - The pushaway should be smooth and deliberate but not aggressive. An aggressive pushaway can pull you forward, loosen your grip on the ball, and throw you off-balance. This will affect how you walk and may ruin the consistency of the remainder of your approach. - The direction of the pushaway can be straight out toward your target, or it can be straight out and down toward your target line. It should not go upward or straight down! It must never go sideways! - The pushaway sets up the armswing. For this reason, you must focus on maintaining a wrist posi-tion that keeps your hand under the ball. This is critical! It allows the ball to drop straight down at the beginning of the armswing, keeping it on the target line! - The height of the ball at the end of your pushaway determines the speed of your shot. The higher the ball is at the end of this skill, the faster it will swing and the harder it will be to hang on to. Keep this in mind as you develop this skill. remember, the ball should never be in charge of its own delivery! This skill puts you in charge of the shot, so pay attention to it!

Tip: The pushaway is one of the adjustments you can make to your delivery. since you will be using gravity to produce the speed of the shot (a concept to be covered in the following chapter), you can produce more or less speed by altering the height to which you push the ball.

WesT CoVInA — Welcome everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We returned to West Covina for our 3rd of the 3 hdcp special events, where we saw 220 entries come out for fun and sup-port the ABTA. We had decent shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +46 for the men and +19 for the women. The super seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Mike Bous-quet +33, robert ricketts +31 and Mary Andruczyk +18. super seniors are men 63 and over. For the women, you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 51 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week.

Top qualifier for the Men was John Pham with a +122. For the women it was deborah sanders with a +89. each of them will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. each week our top seed overall draws the Match se-ries, and this time it was worth $778. The top seed drew a 525. We had two bowlers that bowled this score during the qualifying squads. They were Louis evans, and Paul Bunya. each will get $389. At our next event we will estimate the Match series at $300 at Linbrook. For the 3-6-9 quali-fying, the final person was Alvin Francisco who missed on his first shot. He will get a $50 consola-tion. The 3/6/9 will be $3,000 at Linbrook.

In our optional doubles, fin-ishing in first were Deborah Sand-ers and david emrich with a 1386 for $130. Finishing second was Mark Andrews and Frank ortega with 1385 for $110. There was a total of $1,290 paid out in doubles and 24 paid spots with low to cash of 1324.

Sponsor Global 900 Ball Demo at Linbrook from 11AM til 5PM Join UsIn the semis we saw Marvin

Crowder lead the field with a +115 to sit out and bowl for the title at West Covina. Coming in second was Javier Avilia with a +95 to sit out the first round. It took a +46 for the men and +0 for the women.

Crowder had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. The pot is maxed out and we have a back-up pot that is growing which is now at $3,405.so, big bucks the next 3 weeks at least for you. Marvin drew a 278. We had no bowlers who shot that score so it will be carried over. We will have $3,500 next week at Linbrook, and continue to build on the second and third back-up pots. This week we had four new bowlers join us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, ronald Mayo, ramon Alliman, Brian Chesbro, and Christopher Corrette.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were sonia Coronado, Tom Mazzula, Mar-gie Coronado, Alvin Francisco, sarah Magno, Lonzell Burnett, and Art Windsor. They received checks of $100 each. In the sec-ond round, the losers were Wilson Cheung, d.A. Wright, Manny Loria, and Javier Avilia. They received checks of $107.50 each. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying any-where from a low of $47 (Jiradej “BK” Harnpatanakitpanich) to a high of $94 (roland suase and randy Folden) depending on who would win. In this round we saw suase (9th seed) bowling steven Au (15th seed). In this match, we would see roland and steve both

continue their good bowling as it would come down to the 10th frame. roland was able to squeak out a close one with a 205 to 203 and advance. In the other match we saw BK (13th seed) bowling randy Folden (12th seed). In this match it would be BK continue his hot bowling to finish with a 217 to 201 and advance to the semi-final match. Folden and Au finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $117.50 each.

Our semi-final match was all set now. It would be bowled on Lanes 49 and 50. In the “horses” we would see BK paying $46 and roland paying $94 if they would win their match. This would be a match where BK said ”there is no stopping me now”, as he would stay clean throughout the match, and throw in 2 doubles also. He would finish with a 210/253 to 149/196 and advance to the title match. suase, a former cham-pion would finish in 3rd place this week for $200 and for those lucky “investors” that had BK as a horse, he paid $47.

The title game was set on Lanes 47 and 48. This would be a match of two fine bowlers in Marvin Crowder, one our fine di-rectors, and BK. At the start of the match, it was Marvin who strug-gled as he would have 3 opens in the first 5 frames. His opponent would start off with a turkey but then throw a couple of splits. At this point BK had jumped out to a 56 pin lead, and that would prove too much for Marvin to overcome. He tried with 2 doubles in the final 5 frames, but it was BK that would hold on and finish with a 181/224 to 178/199 and take home his 1st ABTA Championship. He would take home $1,000 for 1st place

and $1,700 for max. (Cash and-Carry, plus an additional $500 for bowling all 3 events. For a total $3,200 for his win. Marvin re-ceived $500 for 2nd place.

Champion Jiradej Harnpa-tanakitpanich is from Buena Park and used a Columbia ransom de-mand drilled by Mike Wahl. He is single, and his #1fan is Jenny, an ABTA Member! He would like to thank Mike Wahl, Mark Baker, Barry Asher, Jenny, the ABTA, and the ABTA staff. He and Jenny operate the sweetie Thai restau-rant in Cerritos. He would like to thank his family, the ABTA, and the rest of the direc-tors. This is Marv’s 3rd runnerup finish and a title is next!

Moran 814 - Varela 300But Harry... that’s so Wong!!

by Aimee GomezdoWneY—The first place match saw Art Jones 247-235-250/732, Arnold Cheesman 258-206-267/731

and david Cogswell 237-244-249/730 show’d up their high average Herbert Jones, who only managed 269/638. Their Team 12 took four from former first place Team 6’s Larry Gray 215-248-290/753, Bruce Colbert 226-234-212/672, Leonard ruiz 242-249/670 and ramon Torres 234-216-209/659 who fell to fourth after only winning game two.

Team 3 swept Team 14, moving them up to second. Vernon Adams bowled all right, shooting 286-279-236/804. Harry Wong was next on Team 3 with his 205-215- front eleven, foul, carry, 290/710, followed by Bruce Williams 262-214/649 and reggie Brown 204-221-218/643. Team 14’s ramiro Garcia 213-212-266/691, nick Wilson 208-222/627 and Clyde Lumpford 228-204/625 stayed above par but never really got close to a win.

Team 7 moved back up to third with their four wins over Team 10. Mike Villareal 286-237/705, Matt Garcia 215-244-205/664, Juan Ellison 226-204-233/663 and Ron Peter 206-254/647 dropped the first game, but came back to take the next two and totals over steve Gurrieri 280-223-227/730, Gabriel Martinez 204-233-203/640, Brian Main 245-211/638 and the slacking raul rosales 211-231/623.

Team 16 got a sweep over Team 11 thanks to super sub Andy Moran, who shot 256-279-279/814 and got help from Andrea snyder 256-257-257/770, and a six plus set from Mike Cammarata 208-239/644. Tony Bur-rell 268-229-234/731, Larry stephens 230-238/656 and Travis Moore 216-246/649 needed something along the lines of a miracle to stop Team 16 this week.

In a high scoring battle, Team 9 won four from Team 13, who was rejoined by one teammate this week. rick easley 243-264-233/740, Kurt Arakaki 243-265-221/729, Katrina Fujikami 216-247-248/711 and Kevin Ya-mauchi 268-225/684 bowled well, including easley’s 3-4-6 conversion for the second game win. Paul Barraco 257-267-226/750, deeronn Booker 256-258-222/736, Juan Camarena 237-247-249/733 and Armando Zavala 256/611 stepped it up the last game to win, 953-927.

Team 1 swept Team 2 thanks to Johany Polony who consistently threw the ball 20.5 mph to lead the pair, 249-255-230/734; Charles Weeks who shot his third ever seven, 212-225-279/716; Adam McKenzie 278-248/710; and Kevin Peterson who added 255-210/654 for good measure. danny ontiveros 238-266-207/711, Mike Faraci 243/653 and sam Hitchcock 213-215/616 tried to overcome the dead weight of their head case fourth bowler, but realized it was futile against confounding carry.

Tri-Star Vending finally got some wins, four, over Team 4. Jared Lawrence 214-233-234/681, Larry Camp-bell 225-224-213/662, david Yamauchi 266-204/661, and Mark Myers 223-266/651 won all but the second game where Lawrence stoned a 4-9 in the tenth as the other team tripped theirs for the win. Jeremy Glover of Team 4 led the pair with his 254-227-215/696, and got some help from Joe Torre 207-255/653 and Brandon Grant 209-206-205/620.

Team 5 moved out of the cellar with four wins over Team 15. eric snow was inspired to bowl better 279-255-247/781, probably by the return of teammate Paul Varela, who shot 258-300-201/759. Jeff seesholtz tossed in a 230-244-225/699, and Team 5 overtook the efforts of Andy Clark 219-258-239/716, ricky Kilgore 214-235-220/669, George reister 234-202-224/660 and sean Lemon 262/613.

Thankfully, this round is almost over. Hang in there, have a great week, and see you all next week.

VIsAILA—The California UsBC Youth state scratch Tourna-ment was held oct 15-16 at AMF Visaila Lanes. Vincent Bravo from Lancaster was crowned champion after defeating the CA state Youth Masters Champion, Parker Brooks from AMF Arrowhead Lanes. Vincent was on fire on Sunday in the Double Elimination bracket remaining undefeated shooting 215-245-279-233-258. In the 4th round, Vincent clutched the win against Oscar Chan punching out with 279 against oscar’s 278. What a great match. We unfortunately had a very small turnout again this year with a collegiate tournament conflict being held in Reno. The girls opted to bowl against the boys and gave them a run for their money! Ashley Dunn from Palmdale finished 3rd and Valerie Riggin from Vista finished in 5/6th place. Great job ladies! We will be awarding bonus scholarship awards to the overall high qualifier, Oscar Chan (2671-12 games), overall qualifier high game, Ronnie Fujita (289) and the high game from the finals, Vincent Bravo (279). There was one 2013 North Point Jr. Gold qualifier held on saturday, which Brian Hernandez, the 2011 Pepsi scratch Champion grabbed.

This tournament will be moving to August 11-12 next year. We are hoping to get more entries since it will still be summer and school has not started yet so no collegiate conflicts. We will also be slightly modifying the format so that there will be less qualifying

games thus decreasing the entry fee. Please help us to spread the word so that we can get more scratch youth bowlers to enter. It’s a great experience and some fun competition. It was really great to see some first time bowlers this year.

Thanks to AMF Visalia for always being such gracious hosts each year. And special thanks to the parents and participants for coming out and supporting this event. You can download the qualifying results and finals bracket online at www.CalUSBC.com. remember, the Best Bowlers Come From California… and they start out as awesome youth bowlers!

GArden GroVe — Valley View Lanes welcomed the Las Ve-gas Travel league with fresh coffee as we entered our second round of bowling centers this season. Man-agement and staff were very help-ful with entering team rosters and quickly resolving any problems encountered. Their friendly and efficient support was very appre-ciated.

several bowlers scored over 500 series sets today with doris Lewis setting the pace by rolling a nice 557. only one pin lower was Myrt owens with a 211 game rounding out a 556.

others conquering the lanes were Linda Kinney with a 211-547, Kim Cato with a 204-537, nancy soto with a 203-531, dar-lene Waken with 530, ella Wilson with a 202-529, Marie Collier with

Cal Bowl 1 retained the top team position for the second week with 19 wins. Cal Bowl 2 captured second position at 18 wins. In the third spot is Westminister 2 at 17 wins. Westminister 1 is next at 16 wins being closely pushed by both Valley View 1 and Fountain Bowl 1, at 15 wins each. Keystone 2 rounds out the upper half of the standings with 14.5 wins. The bal-ance of the teams are tightly clus-tered from 12.5 wins to 7 wins.

Although the league has com-pleted it’s first 9 weeks of the season; no team has distinguished itself firmly in the top positions. With our first position round at Cerritos next week, we can expect to see some shuffling in standings.

It was nice to have nancy Hamilton return to bowling after her recent surgery and we all wish her well with treatments over the next year.

BOWL

lAkE FOrEst — BusinEss nEtwOrk It was Tuesday night, October 11, 2011 around 8 pm, when only one bowler seemed to be visible. He was standing on the approach all alone. His face was tense with the need to control his fear and excitement. The bowlers standing behind him were still and silent and some had their fingers crossed, as they waited with anticipation for Gary Armstrong (aka weak) to throw his 12th strike to score a 300 game. Armstrong walked the 15 foot approach to the foul line, rolled his famous blueberry ball 60 feet, toward the 35 pounds of bowling pins that stood like British Guards in front of a palace. POW! The ball was right in the pocket. The crowd yelled loudly then sounds of anguish emerged throughout. #%#%@ The ten pin stood in defiance. Bottom line he shot a great 299 and 754 series! Four other gents shot great also. Dave Bertiotti 219-242-223 / 684, Tim Phillips 232 / 629, Fred Fouts 245 / 590 and Glen Belenger (aka Coyote Kid) 573. LONG-TIME ORANGE COUNTY BOWLER DICK HINTZ PASSES

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—Joseph Richard (Dick) Hintz was born July

12, 1928 and lived in Anaheim. He was an ABC-USBC member for over 60 years. He was manager at Freeway Bowl from 1959-61 and bowled with past OC president, Bob Ramirez, in the Long Beach Traveling league and also was league president and bowled, for many, many years, in the Wally’s Vegas league at Highland Bowl. He was an accomplished and prolific bowler and never met anyone he didn’t like. He was considered a gentleman on and off the lanes and respected and loved by all.

Long time friend and also past president of Orange County ABC, Joe Moore, says they were both in the dry cleaning business and were definite rivals but, on the lanes, they were the best of compadres. Dick’s long-time friend and bowling teammate, Butch Maxwell considered him his second father and honorary family member. Butch recalls Dick retired from bowling in 2004 due to arthritis but still always remembered the “good old days” and his love of the game.

Dick is survived by his wife Ellie and son, Bill. Services will be Friday, Oct. 28th at Riverside National Cemetary at 1 PM. Sympathy cards may be sent to Butch Maxwell, Westminster Bowling Supply, 6429 Westminster Blvd., Westminster, CA. 92683. Condolences to the Hintz fam-ily.

Dewaine West Bowls 824by Frank Weiler

MUrrIeTA—deWAIne WesT did it again: 299. It was his first near perfecto of the season, after five 299s last season. The national record for 299s is forty-one, by WArren WAs-son of Garland, Texas. Watch out cowboy, dewaine has you in his sights.

The 824 (279 - 299 - 246) was West’s first 800 of the season, after three eights last year. dewaine’s big series raised his av-erage to 232, just four below his 236 book average of last sea-son. West wants to thank his wife MArI for her support and the BoWLInG neWs for recognizing his bowling accomplish-ments. By the way, Mari booked 196 last season.

While dewaine was striking away, several other bowlers were also doing well in CAL oAK’s 640 scratch League: Ken CLAY (773), Joe deoCAMPo Jr. (772), MIKe VInYArd (770), rYne CUnnInGHAM (748), JIM MUrTIsHAW (739), and JonATHAn HeIM (723). All of these bowlers are grateful to the BoWLInG neWs for recognizing their accomplishments.

Alan Mojado Gets His First Cal Oaks 300 by Frank Weiler

MUrrIeTA—silver coach ALAn MoJAdo has a PBA 300 and several certified perfectos. However, until a couple of weeks ago, he never had a perfect game at Cal oaks. That all changed when Alan used his new Victory road to strike twelve consecutive times, in the Country Express League. Alan finished his big night with a 726 (198-300-228). His career high series is a 804.

Alan is a YoUTH CoACH at Cal oaks. He told me that he loves helping young bowlers, especially when a kid does well. Alan wishes to thank his ball driller, AndY neeMAn, for a great job and the BoWL-InG neWs for recognizing his accomplishment.
